As an ethnic description, the word "Yoruba" was first recorded in reference to the Oyo Empire in a treatise written by the 16th century Songhai scholar Ahmed Baba.

It was popularized by Hausa usage and ethnography written in Arabic and Ajami during the 19th century, in origin referring to the Oyo exclusively.

The extension of the term to all speakers of dialects related to the usage of the Oyo (in modern terminology North-West Yoruba) dates to the second half of the 19th century.

It is due to the influence of Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first Anglican bishop in Nigeria. Crowther was himself a Yoruba and compiled the first Yoruba dictionary as well as introducing a standard for Yoruba orthography.

The alternative name Akú, apparently an exonym derived from the first words of Yoruba greetings (such as Ẹ kú àárọ? "good morning", Ẹ kú alẹ? "good evening"wink has survived in certain parts of our diaspora as a self-descriptive, especially in Sierra Leone.

The first name the Yorubas were called was Yoruba.

What does that mean? I carried on, Samuel Ajayi Crowther in his Yoruba dictionary defines ‘Yoruba’ as a bastard and deceitful person in Hausa.

Another description comes from the Dr Taiwo Ayanbolu who insisted Yoruba is a name derived from Hausa language which means deceit. He claimed he found the definition at York Museum in England dating to the 19th century.

It has been recorded that the Hausa-Fulani who had been in contact with the Yoruba even before the rise of Oyo Empire had for some reasons chosen to call us Yoruba, or Yaribansa. Perhaps this might have been a result of Yoruba people’s bargaining skills which often made the Fulani traders fall victim of trade by barter.

Some say that the word Yoruba started protruding during the clash between Yoruba and Fulani that steered the lost of Ilorin to them in the 18th century.

Professor Ade Ajayi in “Yoruba Warfare in the Nineteenth century” insisted that during the indirect rule era, it was necessary for the imperialists to give a unique name to the entire towns and people who spoke Yoruba language.

Somehow, they settled for Yoruba. Yoruba is a deviation of Yoruba which the Yoruba people of that century rejected. The Ijebu, Ijesa and Egba rejected this name vehemently but because during the Kiriji war (the Yoruba civil war) where the collapse of Oyo Empire commenced and the signalling factor the imperialists used to prompt the rule over Oyo from covers.

The name Yoruba was foisted on Oyo and Ibadan mainly on documents and slowly the name Yoruba was enshrined in our culture and hence, our appellation. Research shows that the Egba were the last to accept Yoruba as their appellation, reason coming from facts emanating from the first newspaper published in Yorubaland in 1859, goes: Iwe Iroyin Fun Ara Egba Ati Yoruba. This indicates that the Egba refused the name Yoruba as at 1859.

Furthermore, in the Ifa Corpus there's no Odu where we were referred to as Yoruba, rather, it is as Omo Kaaro Ojiire, Omo Oduduwa or Omoluabi.

Thus said, the word Yoruba is new in our vocabulary and it is a way of showing we accepted a negative appellation dropped on us by hostile foreigners.

Debo Kayode Ogunranti
You're still crying with your baseless gibberish without facts. It's no more Hausa? 😂 After you realized it had no meaning in Hausa and Fulani. Lol.

Point is the word Yoruba has no meaning in any language except in Yoruba language. That's a fact!

The word Yoruba simply translate into Oyo Ori Oba which is "Oyo is the Kinghead". It's in Yoruba proverb as a matter of fact. In fact, 9ice also mentioned it in his music.

Of course, Yoruba groups had several names they were bearing before Yoruba (Yooba) was eventually used for everyone. The word Yarba was because some foreigners couldn't pronounce the name Yo'oba which was what the Oyo were bearing. It has no meaning in any language except in Yoruba language. That's a fact! Richard Burton even reported on Yoruba account in 1861, noting that the name "Yoruba" derives from "Ori Oba" which means -The Head King📍

On a side note, Ilorin is a Yorubaland which bears Yoruba name with Yoruba language. That's a fact! Also, the British met no emir ruling Ilorin when they arrived. That was the record documented in the archives by the British who emphatically stated that the Emir had been chased out of Ilorin.

Of course we already knew Af0onja fell into his own mistake which he later realized, although it was too late for him. In fact, Alimi was only an alfa in Ilorin, not an Emir to begin with, while Af0onja ruled Ilorin as the ruler of Ilorin which was part of Oyo empire. First, it was some Manden people who took up Islam before bringing Islam to Yorubaland while trading hence some Oyo folks practised it, including some Ilorin which was a subset of the Oyo empire. Secondly, Fulani and Alimi brought no Islam to Yorubaland like I already stated (it was some Manden people hence why Yoruba call it "esin mali" which means it's from Mali). After Af0onja became greedy in his attempt to rule Oyo, he invited the useless Alimi as mercenary who eventually betrayed him and murdered him.

In the end though, the Emir and Fulani were later chased out of Ilorin because of the constant murder of the Yoruba in Yorubaland perpetrated by the greedy useless Fulani hence these useless folks were fought against and chased out of Ilorin. That was before the British came to Ilorin. The British didn't meet any ruling Emir who was a nonentity as a matter of fact. Since Ilorin chief wouldn't submit, he was exiled while the Emir was brought back. All these are documented already in the old archives ✨

That being said, Ilorin needs to have an Oba as a matter of fact. The cultural Kings are the custodians of African cultures which is needed in Ilorin as a matter of fact. That was what Afoonja, the ruler of Ilorin represent. That's not the position of an Emir. I don't even see the purpose of an Emir there because there are Mosques and Churches where these supposed foreign religion should take place. But when it comes to an African ruler, it should be upholding the African cultures. Simple as ABC!

That's just btw. Back to Yoruba name which only has its meaning in Yoruba language. it was Oranmiyan of Ile Ife that coined the Yoruba name which means "Oyo is the Kinghead". IFA refers to Yoruba as Omo Kaaro Ojiire (children of blessings), Omo Oduduwa (children of Oduduwa/children of the vessel of virtues), Omoluabi (children of God/righteousness) etc.

Yoruba was the name which Oyo were bearing and it only has its meaning in Yoruba language.

The point is Yoruba groups had several names they were bearing before Yoruba was eventually used for everyone. The word Yarba was because some foreigners couldn't pronounce the word (Yo'oba) which was for the Oyo. It has no meaning in any language except in Yoruba language. Yoruba has no meaning in Hausa.

Yoruba was a name given by Oranmiyan of Ile Ife.

It's coined from "Oyo ori oba" which means Oyo is king. 9ice mentioned it in his gongo Aso music when he said "ajise bi Oyo lari, Oyo ko sebi Baba enikan"

Oranmiyan of Ile Ife gave that name. It was Oyo who were first called that name and then later, the whole Yoruba was called the name.

Heaven and earth were joined and they were cloved asunder? That's funny. Lol. There was also nothing in the universe to begin with.

Ifa is even accurate by mentioning the creation of light first before going further to mention matter. Well, the earth is actually made up of light and matter.

But Heaven and earth joined to clove asunder? Aside the funny statement, Mohammed didn't even know if he should say earth was created first or heaven was created first. He was confused. He said earth was created first, then later said it was heaven which was created first and then said they were already joined together and then clove asunder🤔 Lol. That was how he said the Sun sets in a murky water/pool and rises from murky pool on people ☹️ He probably saw the reflection of the sun in the muddy pool thus concluded such.

Well, I felt Mohammad could have witnessed some meteorites (small stones falling from space) which shouldn't be farfetched, considering he and those with him were always roaming the desert thus could have happened to witness some meteorites. So either he or those with him witnessed the falling meteorites which they couldn't understand (meteorites had fallen in several places as a matter of fact), thus he or those with him could have witnessed it but couldn't understand it hence that could have been the reason why he came up with the dumb line of heaven and earth cloved asunder. In fact, I also felt that Mohammed knew that the stone idol deity in kabba is a meteorite. It could have also been the basis for his narrative of heaven and earth cloved asunder from. Lol. The quraysh tribe who were fond of worshipping stone idol deity could have told him that it was a fallen stone (meteorite). In fact, the quraysh tribe liked collecting several gem stones including meteorites and pumice they saw to keep as idols which they worshipped. That was the basis of the Kaaba to begin with.

While I think there's something in IFA which is the Yoruba religion because of its accuracy of the world description which is all about light and matter 💤 , and also the innovative creative enlightenment/Idea present in it however, it needs to be interpreted right (especially the ebo sacrifice/animal sacrifices) while the innovative creative ideas should also be focused on to bring such innovation into technical realities.
Yoruba religion (IFA) is quite accurate on the description of the earth formation, even as it described it as light and matter which we know is what the earth is made of.

First, IFA states that Eledumare (Olorun/Oluwa) is the only one supreme almighty creator. What's Eledumare? El is got from the word "Ela" which means "light" in the sense of enlightenment, clarity and wisdom. Odu means "vessel" while Mare means "infinite manifestations or infinite creations". So Eledumare means "the light (wisdom)/knowledge of the vessel of infinite manifestations/possibilities/creations". In Olodumare, the Ol from Olodumare means the Owner or Lord (Oluwa) thus, Olodumare means the Lord of the mysterious knowledge of the vessel of infinite creations/manifestations.

Then there are the Orishas. The first Orisha to create the earth was Obatala but he ended up sleeping off thus Oduduwa came to complete the earth creation assignment. Obatala and Oduduwa are regarded as one entity which created the earth like a covered calabash (sphere) with Obatala holding the upper part of it while Oduduwa hold the lower part of it, according to IFA.

So let start with what does Obatala means? It means the "king of light". IFA also calls Obatala "aterekaraye" which means expansion through the universe. Hence, these hot light particles which is Obatala started the creation of the earth by expanding until it slept off at a stage (which was the sleeping stage which IFA states about Obatala thus making Oduduwa to take over the completion of the earth creation). Obatala light simply expanded into Oduduwa thus making Oduduwa to take over.

What does Oduduwa means? It simply means "mysterious black vessel of creation/black vessel matter". It also depict the earth formation.

Hence, Obatala (light ) slept off (cooled) after its series of expansion (aterekaraye) into dark Oduduwa vessel to form atoms/matter which then took over. The law of conservation state states that matter aren't destroyed but converted from one form to another.

The atoms formed collided with one another to form the Sun, the star, the asteroids, the comets and the planets which include the planet Earth. That was how the earth was formed!

As for the water bodies on earth, it's formed as a result of the comets formed which then collided with the earth to form the water bodies on the earth.

IFA described these waterbody (comets) as Yemoja + Olokun) but as one entity representing the water body which then collapsed on the Earth as stated by IFA. Yemoja with her large breasted surface represent the surface area of the water body and the rivers while Olokun represent the deepest part of the ocean. So, the combination of the Earth formed by Obatala/Oduduwa as one entity and the formed water body comet (Yemaja/Olokun) collided to give birth to all the other Orishas (which all have their meanings btw).

Basically, the world was formed with the creation of the Obatala light which expanded (aterekaraye) into a dark Oduduwa vessel to form matters which combined to form the Earth, the Sun, the Stars, asteroids and the Comets (water body). IFA is actually accurate! Too accurate as a matter of fact!

On Orunmila, Orunmila which is Orun Mo Ela means heaven's light. Orunmila is also regarded as "Ogbon Ile aye" (The wisdom of the whole world). He's also called "Olupitan Ile Ife" and "Eleri ipin" which means the historian of Ile Ife and the witness of all creations respectively. According to IFA, Orunmila was there from the beginning of the universe and witnessed everything. Ela is referred to as Orunmila btw. Ela means light & clarity like I previously stated and is also regarded as the only begotten child and the word of Eledumare hence, we can say Ela (light and clarity) is the manifestation of Obatala (king of cross light) which is the fundamental of Eledumare. Since Ela is regarded as the only begotten child and the word of Eledumare, then we can say Ela manifested the fundamental of Eledumare who's a spirit!

Hence, the supreme Force is Eledumare/Olorun and its Ela (word/only begotten child).

Btw, two names mentioned as the only begotten child of Eledumare are Ela and Jewesun/Ye ki ewe sun (the lamb). Since IFA states that Eledumare has only one begotten child (Okanbi), then it means Ela is the same as Jewesun/Ye ki ewe sun (the lamb). That is, Ela is also known as Jewesun (Ye ki ewe sun)

That being said, let me state that just as Yoruba have the cosmos Orishas, Yoruba also have the human Orishas who were quite talented to depict their powerful nature while living on earth. For example, Obatala was the first King of IFE. He and his descendants ruled IFE before Oduduwa of Oke Ora of Ile Ife was also chosen by IFA to rule IFE. So both were chosen by IFA to rule IFE to depict the creation of IFE📌 There's also Ogun, Sango, Osun etc who were all talented humans displaying their talented nature, as also depicted in the cosmos. There's also the human Orunmila who's the first IFA priest to start IFA practice. It was also stated that Ela birthed of a virgin woman (Oyigi) would come thereafter to take over the Orunmila role which had always been Ela's role before the beginning of the universe. So Ela is also referred to as Orunmila like I previously stated✨ Orunmila/Ela has no idol, just like Olodumare.

Another aspects are the innovative, scientific and creative aspects of all these Orishas which should be focused on and bring forth into technical realities. For example, Ogun represent metallurgy and mechanical engineering etc. Oko Orisha represent Agriculture (mechanized farming and agro industrialization). Sango represent electrical energy, industrialization and civilization etc. That's not to mention the mathematics in IFA which includes algebra, geomantic etc.. So IFA is quite deep!

On another note, I have once stated that the three things I noticed that IFA mostly talks about are IWA (Goodness/Responsibility/righteousness), ELA/ORUNMILA (wisdom). IFA says the Orisha is within us and emphasize that human does become an Orisha💤 As a matter of fact, IFA always mention both the Cosmos Orisha and the Yoruba human Orishas (Yoruba ancestors) while laying emphasis on the fact that Human does become an Orisha✨ Hence, anyone who's good (IWA) and intelligent (Ela) to enlighten or innovate things end up becoming an Orisha. So, human should always desire to be good (IWA) and acquire wisdom (Ela/Orunmila) to enlighten others or innovate/create things to make it easier for their fellow humans. Such human is an Orisha.

Thus the basis/essence of a religion should be humanity (goodness), enlightenment and innovation/creativity. Any religion which lacks such is trash! Simple as ABC.

That being said, it's actually human who makes religion difficult. As a matter of fact, man was made before religion. In fact, any religion which doesn't have humanity as its basis and watchword is trash to begin with. That's what a sane person should know. Human was made before any religion as a matter of fact! Hence a sane person should know this! Humanity is always the basis. Whatever religion created thereafter is meant to enlighten and help in creativity and innovation to make it easier for Humans 💤

Speaking of the Bible, it's says human was created to live on the earth created. Take for example, the supposed God of the Bible always get to the peak of his anger whenever anyone starts to use human being for religion sacrifice or unwarranted killing because of a religion. That's always been the peak of his anger in all cases. Except in cases when it's about defending one's territory against invaders 📌
