Interesting! I learnt from this. Tnx op |
Ok tnx. Source pls, so that we can share. Tnx |
Some believe that they can bully their way out of a simple fact stated by someone who should know and who is neither in support or against the Govt. If the energies expended to defend buhari's obvious failings on Nairaland is channelled to improve his govt., things will be more that okay in the country. |

Definitely, no interest in passing off anything as Igbo. Don't forget the subject of search was not beads. I am surprised your eyes went straight to beads. If you know how google search works, it tries to pick every item with the keyword tag. So you may even see a recent car in the picture list, whatever. Retrain your eyes to the fabric patterns and take all the beads, alright. They are all yours. If you search "akwete" in Wikipedia, that's what you will get Thanks laudate: |
Sir, all that came as is in Wikipedia. I didn't create it. Source = Wikipedia. laudate: |
No Sir, there are no Igbo begger in London and not any part of the world. Not in Igbo character. Thanks for educating me on all the crimes you know of. You may wish to add credit card fraud, sham marriage and welfare fraud which the Yorubas here have perfected since ages. Igbos here are heading to parliament. Sorry for angering you for being in London. It is not my fault. I actually live in Nigeria. I am on holiday here and with the change in weather, I will be back mid Nov. Ok. Thanks but no thanks. OnTheMoveWA: |
@OnTheMoveWA, I am afraid you have lost the moral justification to make any more request on this thread. Hope you are okay? As in, a normal human? After being so battered in a thread you opened, you keep coming back. Your illiteracy and ignorance have been so exponentially exposed that you should be hiding from entire Nairaland forum. But despite the attempts to uplift you and launder your witlessness, you keep missing the point, which is, THE JOKE IS ON YOU!!!!! You may not bother to reply to this. (that's if you are okay??) |
Gentlemen, Note that this thread has had over 1,400 views. My point is that even though it is clear that the Op came out to spew his ignorance, please, instead of coming down hard on him, educate him. Provide him with the knowledge that he lacks that is fuelling his prejudice. And by so doing, you will not only improve him but also improve the knowledge of many others like him who are watching from a vintage point but may not be joining in because the thread is becoming so monotonic. You can also see that not many Yorubas, his people seemingly, are coming to his rescue. Please do not assume anything. Do not ask him to Google anything. He might not know how to approach that basic step of information search. I will therefore answer some of his worries: He wanted to know if there was any traditional clothing for the Igbos. Yes, actually many but with everything about Igbo history, it was difficult for the white colonialists to understand our ways being so republican and vibrant. Self determination was in Igbo land long before the whiteman came. So for the cloths:-documented and undocumented: 1. Akwete. "Akwete cloth weaving is said to be as old as the Igbo nation." Vanguard. Read more: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/07/akwete-cloth-an-igbo-textile-art/ Akwete cloth is a unique hand woven textile produced in Igboland for which the town of Akwete in Abia state, Nigeria is famous. -Wikipedia Akwete is the most documented of Igbo traditional fabrics. It was so sophisticated that the patterns and motifs had copyright as far back as then. Traditionally the creator of a new motif is granted an unwritten copyright. Artiste Victor Uwaifo sang so colourfully about akwaete. 2. Ekete. A loin cloth made of local cotton, very often worn as a day-to-day common cloth. It is spurn from local cotton and is much more affordable than the ceremonial Akwete. It is also used in some sling chairs used by those who can afford it. It is also used a lot by the masquerade cult. 3. Ogodo. Thin strip of cloth meant as inner wear for men 4. Igba. A tougher form of ogodo mostly dorn by wrestlers

OPINION Deji of Akure: Eze Ndi Igbo is Protected by the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria By Emmanuel Ejinima The media in the past recent days have gone into frenzy due to a seeming misunderstanding between the Deji of Akure, apparently the paramount traditional ruler in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State, Nigeria and Eze Ndi Igbo in Akure, the leader and spokesperson for the Igbos therein. The Igbos are a widely travelled tribe in Nigeria that could be found in virtually all parts of the country. Aside the catchy headline in the media that the Deji of Akure flogged Eze Ndi Igbo and de-robed him after an altercation, Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba soci-cultural organisation, through one of its operative units, the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), in a well-publicised communiqué, asked South-West governors and Obas to de-recognise Eze Ndigbos in Yorubaland. In fact, the statement authored by Kunle Famoriyo, its Publicity Secretary has a ‘serious’ accusation levelled against the Igbos and their Eze Ndi Igbos -“The evolution of this structure has forced us to consider it as an expansionist agenda as the structure is only rampant in Yorubaland,”. Without going too far, let’s find out: what and who is Eze Ndi Igbo? Eze Ndi Igbo is simply a representative of Igbo people living in any enclave outside their Igbo homeland. Historically, Igbos were republican and operated through a network of autonomous settlements. The Igbo popular phrase, Igbo ewe eze, (Igbos have no king) captures the long standing historical origin of Igbo societies that were not built around monarchies and theocracies as found in the northern and western parts on Nigeria through the Emirs and Obas respectively. This was why the indirect rule of the colonial British that worked well in the two regions failed in the East, the domain of Igbos. That’s the history. Now, zoom to modern day Igboland. Yes, in the contemporary power settings, there are traditional rulers, the ‘Igwes’ and ‘Ezes’, ‘ruling’ over autonomous communities of Igboland, even though they are more of symbolic heads rather than rulers and local authorities. The strongest authorities in most Igbo communities are the town development unions while the traditional rulers are confined to serves as custodians of native tradition and customs, and play some roles in alternative dispute resolution in the communities. Outside Igboland, the many Igbos in Diaspora, be it overseas, or in various parts of Nigeria are known to cluster together through a web of community and town-hall meetings and associations. This fully conforms with the right to freedom of association guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended). Wherever it is present, an Eze Ndi Igbo or Eze Igbo is a selected, elected or appointed leader and spokesperson for the Igbo community in the particular location. He may not have any legally conferred authority but retains certain level of recognition and influence which is limited to Igbo dwellers in the area. There is no ambition for an Eze Ndi Igbo to ‘rule’ over more than his kith and kin, the Igbos or to extend his ‘territory’. There is really no territory over which an Eze Ndi Igbo supritends. This is universal. The Eze Ndi Igbo, Toronto does not have any particular geo-teritory. So are the many other Ezes Ndi Igbo all over the world. The position of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo, the pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation is that the function performed by the Ezes Ndi Igbo as they exist outside Igbo homeland are needed and actually work with and through them to reach the Igbos away from home. But Ohaneze had also pleaded with the diaspora Ezes to change their titles to ‘Onye Ndu Ndi Igbo’ which better translates the role as leader and spokesperson of Igbos in the particular setting. Ohaneze also requested them not to use ‘His Royal Highness’ or ‘His Royal Majesty’ titles in another man’s land, which could affect or hurt the sensibilities of their hosts. The absolute truth is that the Eze Ndi Igbos are on their own and independent of Ohaneze or any form of authority in Igboland. They are not bound to obey Ohaneze. That is the truth. Simply said, they are not linked to the home land Igbo in any form. It is a child of circumstance occasioned by the need for the Igbos to have a focal point while in foreign land. In Igboland and other parts of the nation, there are Sarkin Hausa and Sarakin Fulani as leaders and spokespersons of the tribesmen and women dwelling in the various parts of Igboland. There is also the Yoruba community which will usually have an association head that are welcome and recognised by the officialdom and authorities, just as such. It is a well know fact that Igbos thrive on trade and commerce. An essential factor for Igbo progress, wherever, they find themselves, is the goodwill of and peaceable coexistence with their hosts. They need that to ply their trade and carry on their businesses in a conducive atmosphere. No Igbo will deliberately stoke violence because it is their stalls that will be broken into by hoodlums; it is their businesses that will suffer from downtime. Many Igbos hardly find time to participate in political activities because of the demands of their businesses. These are actually the matters the Eze Ndi Igbo should be concerned about for that is the raison d'etre of the Eze Ndi Igbo arrangement. Against the foregoing, first, there is no way the Eze Ndi Igbo, who simply duties to look after the wellbeing and welfare of his fellow Igbo men and women, and their business interests, who individually are reminded too often that they are ‘settlers’, can ever compete for power and influence with the Lords and rulers of the land who have a much wider span of authority. The day the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria begins to be afraid of powers and influence of the President of Nigerian Bar Association or President of National Union of Teachers, it is either the president lacks understanding of his office and powers, or some sinister power game is at play. Whichever it is, the Deji of Akura need not feel threatened by a mere Eze Ndi Igbo in Akure to merit the conflagration, de-robing, de-throning, and all the brouhaha which the Afenifere, has instead chosen to magnify through a hasty public announcement. Secondly, if it is established that the Eze Ndi Igbo in Akure was manhandled, and his robes and ‘crown’ removed in humiliation at the palace of Deji of Akure, then it is clearly in breach of the fundamental human rights of the Eze Ndi Igbo which the Nigerian constitution upholds. Specifically, Section 34(1) (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended) states that “Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly - (a) no person shall be subject to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment. All should therefore know that Eze Ndi Igbo is protected by the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria which overrides all traditional norms, cultures or all other laws, in fact. While we are in support of a peaceable and speedy resolution of the matter in Akure, it should never remain in doubt that, should those whose fundamental human rights, as stipulated in the Constitution, have been trampled upon, choose to press forward with charges, the laws of the land shall listen to them and such an uncouth behaviour as experienced in the palace of the Deji of Akure truly amounts to self-help in law and an obvious breach of the constitution, and these could have serious repercussions. More disappointments pouring in from Buhari's supporters...... Buhari's Ministerial List A Huge Disappointment-Bamidele Olateju Excerpts.... "At this moment, in this nation’s history, given the landmark election that upstaged an incumbent; this time calls for the injection of new blood to surprise the public and win it back. President Buhari, went the exact opposite route by choosing to keep it all in the family. We have been presented with more of the same, there is nothing remotely exciting nor surprising about this motley of the common list. ....The inclusion of women in the ministerial list is on the paltry side. It makes a growing case of a man stuck in an era he was raised and grew up in....https://www.nairaland.com/2647369/buharis-ministerial-list-huge-olateju |
Appraising the change on October 06, 2015 / in News, Viewpoint 4:12 pm / Comments Facebook Twitter Google+ LinkedIn Reddit Print By Sunny Ikhioya THE country belongs to all of us; whether things turn bad or good we are all in it together and, of course everyone will want things to be better except Sheakau, the Boko Haram leaders and his agents of death. So when we direct our attention to the loop holes in government, it is directed at stimulating actions and appropriate remedy application rather than the pull down syndrome that partisan Nigerian will attribute to it. When election is over, governance begins in earnest and everyone’s attention must be focussed towards moving the nation forward, it is directed at the present and not the past. buhari-change-LOGOIf errors were committed in the past, it is the duty of the present government to address them without disrupting the polity. When you stay fixated for too long with the past, you easily miss the way forward. That is why the present regime must focus more on putting structures and institutions in place rather than individuals. We must not build our country around individuals because when they are gone and another leader who knows not Joseph is installed, things will revert back to their decadent state. That is what the APC government with Muhammadu Buhari as the president owe this nation. We will like to ask ourselves what the present government will be like without Buhari? The government is been tailored and run in line with Buhari’s whims rather than the established patterns. We will like to ask again, which person will dare to run a democratic elected government for four months without a ministerial cabinet in place except Buhari? Unfortunately, most state governors have taken a cue for their own selfish reasons. No individual can fight corruption on his own without the support of the constitutionally established institutions and these institutions cannot perform to their potentials or meet their goals, if their actions are dictated by the sentiments of the leader or the ruling party. Whatever is bad is bad and the bad and criminal conducts are expressly stated in our constitution, the relevant law enforcement agencies have other working documents still in tune with the constitution, all that is left is the required freedom for these organs to perform their task. With this, they will perform silently, sentiments and be goal focussed. The general populace will see the objectivity in their actions and give them support. Nuhu Ribadu got the support of the people but not the deserved independence and that accounts for the perceived ‘selectiveness’ in the prosecution of criminal politicians. The President’s body language is against corruption and the whole nation has been alerted to this fact and people are already getting used to the fact that it is not business as usual. On that score the nation is making progress but such progress could be scuttled if left to the whims of man and politicians, that is what we have witnessed so far. When such situation plays out, the people lose confidence, hence for the constitutionally approved agencies to perform creditably,we must give them the required freedom and independence, the type accorded to Professor Attahiru Jega in INEC. Apart from the anti corruption drive, Buhari must move very quickly in the direction of other key sectors. The study and evaluation period has taken too long. We are not only experiencing this at the federal but the state levels; a lot of the states are yet to get going. Files to be processed are held up as a result of the absence of key ministers and commissioners that are constitutionally empowered to sign such documents. Look at the confusion arising from the Saraki case because of the absence of an Attorney General, look at the embarrassment of Nigeria’s absence from a UN meeting that was to address key security issues relating to terrorism, all of these gaffes could have been avoided. Some have said that the delay is good for Nigeria and that Buhari is saving money for the nation but this is not a generally held view, like this piece below, now trending on the internet seem to suggest; “The State of The Economy Under Buhari In numbers: 1. Zenith bank sacked 1, 200 staff 2. Access bank sacked 800 staff 3. Skye Bank sacked 400 staff 4. Unity Bank sacked 320 staff 5. Construction industry sacked 60, 000 workers 6. La Casera weeded out 1, 300 workers 7. Nigeria Stock market has lost over N3 trillion in the last 3 months 8. Foreign investors have withdrawn over N400 billion from the stock market.9. Unemployment rises by over 60% in the last three months 10. JP Morgan delisted Nigeria with over N310 billion lost in 24 hours 11. GDP dropped from 6.1% projected in 2015 to 4.5% 12. Ethiopia and Kenya overtook Nigeria as Africa’s number one and two for FDI, within the last three months. 13. Naira is on a free fall. It exchanges N222, N350 and N256 against the Dollar, Pounds and Euro respectively.14. Companies are closing down, others are downsizing.15. Inflation rate has hit double-digits of 10.1% for the first time.16. Boko Haram has killed about 2000 Nigerians in the last 100 days under Buhari’s watch.17. About 60,000 construction workers have lost their jobs in the last four months, so says the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers. The union’s President, Comrade Amechi Asugwuni, blamed the development on the country’s economic downturn. “The economy is slowing and promised infrastructure reforms are taking too long to implement. Over 60,000 of our members have lost their jobs as a result of infrastructural deficit.” Unemployment is clearly on the rise. Just look around you. Jobless people are everywhere and in virtually every home. An army of jobless youth is a time bomb that may consume this country if the government fails to act appropriately. Governance is not just about making noise and about fighting corruption. A good government must create an enabling environment for industrial growth and maximum capacity utilisation. This will create jobs. A government must come out with policies and provide infrastructure to encourage commercial agriculture. This is another avenue for job creation.” So, you be the judge. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/appraising-the-change/ |
Here we go again. @kahal29, why are you so ardent in selling Fr Enwerem? What is your game? what is your gambit? -remaining ministerial list? as an ardent scholar eager to add to the political knowledgebase that will emancipate Nigeria? or merely, another politician in cassock? As if we haven't had enough of the likes of Oritsajafo, Kukah, Chukwuma and Mbaka. A catholic priest, yes. Struggling in O'dua land of Ibadan and made every effort to conceal his South Eastern early background in an elaborate resume, just to be politically correct (with APC). C-o-m-e o-n. I won't be part of casting of aspersion on an anointed shepherd of the Lord. But because we find this in political section, this character is facing an identity crisis, and the hypocrisy of it is too obvious to be concealed. Given the opportunity, he will do much worse that those he criticises. kahal29: |
My VP, I feel you. and I feel your frustration. The battle is not yours (as of today, clearly. For you are a spare). Coming out to say this is quite compassionate but little reassuring. What will make it different, my dear VP, is a definite statement, from the right quarters. Not endless "we will". Can the DSS live up to their consumption of public funds and identify and smash the terror network used by Boko Haram to operate even when their bases have been displaced? Where is our intelligence gathering? Now? In the past administration, somehow, by now, some leads would have been gotten. Rather, many days after, what we are told is that investigations WILL go beyond Boko Haram -another "will". The war against terrorism appears to have gone soft as of the moment. There is less coordination, less preparedness and less alertness. The independence day and period around it were all hot spots in time and a lot ought to have been anticipated. Sacking DSS and putting new DSS and so forth is not making us stronger. The threat is rather becoming stronger, my VP. Kuje is halfway from the airport Sir. How couldn't our security operatives detect and nab them enroute. A repeat of Nyanya rather rubbishes any claim to alertness of our security operatives. They made a statement, Sir. They did. Sir, APC's great campaign, of which you were part of paid off hugely. But the campaign mode must be replaced forthwith with governance mode. No more delay. Nigeria and Nigerians need no propaganda. They need to see and feel progress. Thank you, Sir. E. Ejinima Public Commentator |
While agreeing with you that a Buhari presidency will naturally prefer a much more regulated media space, I will agree with those who believe that it might not be anything like his military era when he could make decrees on the spot and even backdate it a million years to rope in any culprit. Yes, the leadership in China banned Facebook outright. The possibility is there but in practical sense, a new law will require the national assembly's upper and lower chambers. On existing statutes, it will be difficult to completely bring down a media platform like Nairaland. If the fed govt approacjes the court, they will need to specifically cite the offending content and seek for it (or them) to be pulled out, request a rebuttal and perhaps a monetary compensation as damages. But again< all that will take time and motion in a typical court process and Nairaland (and Nairalnders) will have opportunity to put up a good fight. So, summary, no much course for alarm. I believe current content policies on Nairaland are adequate. So worry not dear Nairalander ![]() |
Rtd Gen Akinirinade has long lost credibility. As a NADECO veteran he was so respected but in recent times, he has shown himself to be a tribalist, become a hatchet man for APC, doing dirty jobs not befitting of him. APC definitely has recruited him on the certificate issue, as a last ditch attempt to hoodwink Nigerians. See what he also said few days ago: Afenifere, A Disgrace To Yoruba Race —Akinrinade The endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan by the pan social-cultural Yoruba group, Afenifere, has been described as disgraceful, self-serving and an embarrassment to every Yoruba living or dead. Yoruba leader, General Alani Akinrinade (retd) who condemned the endorsement, said: “if this old men that are shouting marginalization a few months ago, can sit today to endorse the same man that is marginalizing them, then their brains need medical examination.” He observed that the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as APC vice presidential candidate, (an in-law to the Awolowo family) is enough to unite Yoruba to work for a common interest. He described the endorsement of Jonathan, against the Buhari/Osinbajo ticket as a serious disservice to the Yoruba race. “How can these people be speaking for Yoruba, when they abandon their own son to celebrate a man that sees them as nothing for complete four years? He continues to deceive them with implementation of National Conference, as if that is where our future lies.” Akinrinade charged Yoruba youths to take their destiny in their hands, as the old men are not good role models. He described them as a group of sadist working assiduously against Yoruba interest because of their hatred for a single man. He advised members of Afenifere to use their last days wisely since they will be answerable to God Almighty who created them one day. Ifeoma Nwobodo was like a monster created by Chime. He used her to subdue everybody and the woman made so many enemies. I often wondered how she was going to make it through the general elections because she was so hated in Enugu. Chime placed the office of the chief of staff above his deputy and the secretary of government, Amaechi Okolo shivers when talking to her and openly addresses her as "mummy". Chime encouraging or allowing her to go for the Nkanu senate seat was meant to spite his predecessor, Chima and (as he initially planned it), to also demonstrate his political strength over and above Chima. He meant it to be his final political signoff, but alas, it was not meant to be. Chime has ended up as a very inferior politician when compared to Chime, now that he has failed to ferret himself to the Senate. Now that things have fallen apart, Chime is looking for a scape goat -someone to blame for what he created in the first place. That's cowardly. In his second term, he supervised a government in which virtually all cabinet members where contesting one post or the other: He was vying for senate, his deputy was also eying senate only to clash with madam chief whom he had reserved the senate seat for. The party chairman was going for governorship only to later step down and head for house of reps. All the sins of Chime's commissioner for land, Emeka Ujam was overlooked because he had pencilled him down for House of reps in Nkanu. His man Friday and chief gossip, Jude Akubilo was gunning for house of reps Udi/Ezeagu which Commissioner Chijioke Agu and Commissioner Joe Mmamel were also eying. Meanwhile Gov Chime was quietly, behind, preparing some of his inlaws and relatives for some of the posts, like in Awgu where his son inlaw, marrying his first daughter was pencilled down for house of reps, another in law and local govt chairman, Ike nike was also going for rep seat in Iiuzo while his nephew who he made deputy speaker of the state house of assembly was to be uplifted to take Enugu north/south rep seat. Chime proved himself an opportunist and lead even a greater band of opportunists. Summary, government performance suffered, not much progress achieved beyond paving roads. And what is the result? With many of them working at cross purposes and undermining one another, they all failed! Next, they will start to expose themselves -all the inner dealings and shenanigans. Its just a shame |
@mej67, I believ you’ve made anough points here to deserve more credit that you are given currently. But, pardon me to say, as someone in the field of journalism, that you are a little naïve not to have know that some of these things are sponsored. My advice to you is this. There is more than meets the eye. You are trying but if you cannot stand the fire, you have only one choice, ship out. Don’t expect accolades, you are in their turf. I’m impressed you have read the book, the Courage to Dare by Chinedu Onu. Honestly, I was happy with some of the concepts. I understand he is no more contesting for guber. Quite sad -PDP magic. The estranged wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Clara Chibuzor Chime has been cleared by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Screening Committee to contest the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal House of Representatives seat in Abia State. Mrs. Chime’s name is among the nine aspirants cleared by the PDP Screening Committee for the federal constituency. The list of contestants released at the PDP secretariat in Umuahia Thursday, also indicated that Mrs. Chime would slug it out with three other women including Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, the member currently representing the constituency at at the House of Representatives. Mrs. Chime packed out of the Government House, Enugu in November last year after complaining that she was forcefully confined to the Government House by her husband and vowed never to return. But Governor Chime denied the allegation saying that the First Lady had some health challenges and was being attended to by a medical expert before she requested to quit the Governor’s Lodge and he obliged her. The former Enugu State First Lady reportedly tendered an apology to the governor and the women of Enugu State in September this year begging them to forgive her for all she did during that period,. She had been out of the state since November last year.

You went overboard in trying to prove that the akwaete is the traditional cloth worn by the Igbo.
