*I Have Made Provision For Minimum Wage*...Gov Umahi. Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Engr Dr David Nweze Umahi, FNSE, FNATE, announced that he has made adequate provisions for the implementation of new Minimum wage salaries for civil servants in the state. He urged organized labour in the state to hasten their negotiations with the government to enable it implement the new wage for the workers. Umahi spoke at the state Assembly chambers in Nkaliki, Abakaliki local government area of the state while presenting 2020 budget estimate tagged budget of growth, consolidation and transformation to the state Assembly. He announced that total of 178,136,634,975.38bn would be spent in the year 2020 by his administration. He noted that whatever was agreed at the local government level in the state on the minimum wage would be implemented at the state level by the administration. We have 2020 budget estimate; personnel is N18.158bn. We made provisions for our Minimum wage payment and I use the opportunity to ask labour to hasten up their commitment in the negotiation so that we can conclude and then we will implement the minimum wage. “I have also say that the minimum wage starts with the local government because the chain is as strong as the weakest link. So,whatever that they agreed at the local government level we must implement. But I also support that no state, no local government should spend more than 60% of their earnings paying salaries and the world bank instructed that citizens must be part of budgeting which means that the interest of the citizens must be accommodated in budgeting. “And so, in arriving at whatever we can pay in the minimum wage, we will like to be the first in pay but it must have a face. We have brought before you Mr. Speaker, we have brought before you a total recurrent expenditure of N46.08bn for the recurrent and N132bn for the capital expenditure. What has jacked up the capital is a situation nobody can help. When you are borrowing money, the people you borrow money will tell you what you do with the money”, the Governor said. He explained that Health, Education, Works, Security, Infrastructure, Agriculture and Human Capital Development and Commerce and Industry would be accorded priority in the 2020 budget while Works and Infrastructure for Concession would receive a total of Fifty Four Billion, One Hundred and Twenty Five Million and Eighty Three Thousand, Four Hundred and Sixty Eight Naira, Forty Eight Kobo. “ Education will receive a total of Twenty Seven Billion, and Ninety Seven Million, Two Hundred and Sixty Two Thousand, Three Hundred and Eighty Eight Naira Sixty Nine Kobo N27,097,262,388.69) or 15.21% of the total budget sum. Similarly, Health will receive a total of Fifteen Billion, Four Hundred and Sixty-Six Million, Five Hundred and Forty One Thousand Six Hundred and Three Naira Eighty Five Kobo (N15,466,541,603.85) or 8.68% of the total budget. Human Capital Development and Commerce and Industry will jointly receive the sum of Eight Billion and Sixteen Million, Eighty Eight Thousand Three Hundred and Twenty Four Naira Seventy (N 8,016,088,324.70) or 4.50% of the total sum. Agriculture will receive Three Billion, Seven Hundred and Sixty Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Forty Two Thousand, Seven Hundred and Ten Naira Sixty Five (N3,769,742,710.65) or 2.13% of the budget. “Security will receive Two Billion, Six Hundred and Seventy five Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N 2,675,500,000) or 1.5% of the budget sum, making a total of One Hundred and Eleven Billion, One Hundred and Fifty Million, Two Hundred and Eighteen Thousand Four Hundred and Ninety Six Naira Thirty Seven Kobo (N 111,150,218,496.37) or 62.40% of the budget sum allocated to the 6 critical sub-sectors”, he submitted. lalasticala Mynd44 and seun.

South African president cuts trip short over electricity crisis at home South African President Cyril Ramaphosa AFP South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday cut short an official visit to Egypt because of an electricity crisis brewing at home, his spokesperson confirmed. The president has come under increasing criticism after the country’s embattled power utility Eskom enforced scheduled power cuts that have thrown the country into disarray and pose a threat to the economy. John Steenhuisen, leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance, led a picket outside Eskom headquarters in Johannesburg on Tuesday, saying the “rolling blackouts” threaten to “throw the country’s economy over a precipice.” For the past six days – and intermittently over the past decade – Eskom has enforced “load-shedding,” whereby power is cut for anything from two to four hours at a time in a bid to relieve pressure on the national grid. Roads become gridlocked because traffic lights don’t function, businesses have to close, shopping centres are left in the dark and mines have to halt operations. Steenhuisen called on Ramaphosa to leave the “ruins of a bygone era” in Cairo and attend to his own relic of the past – the power utility. Indeed, Eskom’s problems were already apparent in 2008 when then-president Thabo Mbeki admitted that the government had failed to make provisions for increased generating capacity. Since then, ageing power stations have not been maintained, and two new power stations, which have severely overrun their budgets, are still not operational. Presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko said Ramaphosa would meet with Eskom on Wednesday to be briefed on plans to resolve the crisis. (dpa/NAN)
