A media report claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) vowed to form a parallel government against the then-ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), if the 2015 general elections were rigged.

The report, published on November 21, 2014, quoted the APC as saying that if the 2015 elections are rigged, the party will not recognise the outcome and will go ahead and form a parallel government.

Findings revealed that the APC ahead of the 2015 general elections said that it would form a parallel government if the elections were rigged in favour of the PDP.

The leadership of the APC released a statement in November 2014, saying it would not recognise the outcome of the 2015 elections if they were rigged, and would go ahead to form a parallel government.

John Odigie-Oyegun, who was APC national chairman at the time, had earlier said the same in August 2014.

VP Yemi Osinbajo also corroborated the claim during a town hall meeting in Washington DC in 2014.

“It’s important to bear in mind that it is really up to the ruling government (PDP) to ensure that elections are free and fair. And we made our points repeatedly that is up to the ruling party to ensure the election is fair.

“You will never find crisis anywhere there is free and fair election. For instance, the June 12 election we talking about, there was no violence because there was free and fair…

“In the event that there is electoral robbery, that is, being robbed of our rightful votes, that will establish a parallel government,” he was quoted as saying.

A parallel government is a form of an alternative — often rebellious — government that runs alongside the main government in power. It is a treasonable offense, according to section 37 of Nigeria’s criminal code.

The closest any part of Nigeria has experienced to a parallel government is Boko Haram terrorists attempting to run a state within a state by hoisting flags and taking over villages and towns in the northeast.

Nigeria has had no record of a full-fledged parallel government.

He made the statement while responding to a question asked by one of the attendees.

Nigerian Police's Failure To Arrest MC Oluomo In Lagos After Threat To Igbo Will Breed Impunity – Pyrates Confraternity

The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) has accused the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Idowu Owohunwa, of dereliction of duty over his failure to order the arrest of Mr Musilu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo after he was seen in a viral video threatening Igbo voters.

The NAS Capoon, Mr Abiola Owoaje in a statement entitled, “2023 Elections: Democracy of Trial” said the explanation by MC Oluomo in another viral video that he was joking was defective because it would only encourage others to issue threats to non-indigenes in future.

Owoaje therefore reiterated the call for the establishment of the Electoral Offences Commission to try all those involved in electoral violence.

According to him, the ethnic profiling, verbal assaults and voters suppression that marred the governorship election in Lagos and other states in Nigeria were not healthy for democracy.

“The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) is greatly saddened by the recent developments in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria culminating in the upsurge in ethnic profiling on and off social media, group blame, verbal assaults and intimidation, physical attacks, hate speech and reckless propaganda, indicative of a growing and dangerous trend of intolerance as part of Nigeria’s political culture.

“We condemn the odious resort to intimidation and physical attacks by some undesirable elements as witnessed in some parts of Lagos on March 18 with the sole objective to stymie voting in political opponents’ strongholds mostly based on tribal bias. These actions are unconstitutional, uncivilised and antithetical to the tenets of democracy. Freedom of association, unfettered membership of political parties, and the choice of voting for preferred candidates are guaranteed rights in the Nigerian constitution. Infringing upon these liberties as witnessed in Lagos and other parts of the country imperils democracy” he said.

Owoaje who insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disappointed Nigerians for its lack of transparency in the conduct of the Presidential election especially the inability to upload the results to the IReV portal, called on Nigerians not to despair in their “enthusiasm for and commitment to democracy”.

He commended Nigerians for refusing to be drawn in post-election violence which could endanger democracy pointing out that this underscores the importance they attach to the survival of democracy.

“We reiterate our plea to the political class to guard against inflammatory utterances capable of fanning the embers of hate, ethnic strife and ethnic supremacy thereby delegitimizing the election results and ultimately undermining democracy. We welcome the intervention of those political leaders that have denounced ethnic profiling and we encourage more political leaders to courageously speak out against bigotry.
“The security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have the onerous responsibility to ensure the speedy prosecution of all electoral offenders. Even this in the light of the sad reminder that in Nigeria promoters and enablers of brigandage, vote theft and killings in previous electoral cycles have not been adequately prosecuted to serve as deterrence and discourage the impunity witnessed in some parts of Lagos and other parts of Nigeria on March 18. These perpetrators of violence, if not already arrested, should be fished out to face the full wrath of the law.”

Nairaland is a great place to really know the content of people's heart. Many yorubas like myself were neutral prior to the election. I use to hear about the tribalism from some quarter from both end of the Yoruba's side and the Igbo's side. But, I realised that, the Yoruba's are more open to engagement than the Igbo's. I noticed, when you have upper superior augment than theirs, they switch to insult and blackmail with your religion and culture.

This election was not suppose to go this way, but Obi took it to the next level by saying taking back Nigeria to the Christian community. That alone created what we now have as regards to tribalism.

World leaders including the United States President, Joe Biden, have not yet put a call across to President-elect, Bola Tinubu, who was declared of Nigeria’s February 25 presidential election.

In contrast to Buhari’s election victory in April 2015, Tinubu is yet to receive an official congratulation from world leaders including the US President weeks after being declared a winner.

On April 1, 2015, the then French President, François Hollande, the then United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and the then US President, Barack Obama were among the dignitaries who extended their congrats to Buhari.

Hollande had also showed appreciation for the commitment of the Nigerian people and the professionalism exhibited by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the conduct of the polls.


In his statement issued then on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, Ban Ki-Moon congratulated Buhari on his hard won victory and praised INEC for organising the elections in a professional and credible “manner under challenging circumstances.”

“The INEC, the domestic and foreign observers, civil society, the political parties and above all the Nigerian people themselves. They have shown how a democracy can work; I warmly congratulate Gen. Buhari as the successful Presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC),”then European Union (EU) High Representative/Vice-President, Federica Mogherini had also said.

But for Tinubu, notable world leaders have kept quiet for days running into weeks amid several domestic calls to re-examine the process and court cases.

SaharaReporters had on March 8 Chatham House, an independent policy institute based in London, in an analysis by one of its fellows said the February 25 presidential election showed that the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC failed to learn new lessons.

The London-based institute had stressed that the electoral umpire failed to adhere to its own guidelines, which it enunciated before the poll, especially the one bordering on the uploading of results in real-time.

“The INEC’s performance and controversies over these results mean that the electoral reforms and lessons declared to have been learned were not fully applied and, as an electoral body, it was significantly less prepared than it claimed.

“The logistical failures of INEC and widespread delayed opening of polling units meant that voters who showed up at the polls early were frustrated and many voters and INEC staff were not able to locate their polling units for several hours,” Chatham House had stated.

The commission’s patchy deployment of technology in the use of a Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), Chatham House added, still being intensely scrutinised and criticised.
