I dey pity NNPC minister |
Hard time may be awaiting the outgoing government of President Goodluck Jonathan over the alleged missing $20 billion from the coffers of the Nigerian National Petroleum Cooperation, NNPC. The president-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari Sunday said he will revisit the issue. Buhari who spoke while addressing a delegation of Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC who paid him a congratulatory visit at his campaign headquarters in Abuja on his victory at the polls showed open resentment that the present government turned a deaf over the missing money when it was raised by the former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Sanisu Lamido Sanusi, who is now the Emir of Kano. He regretted that the government hurried sacked the former CBN instead of investigating the missing funds. Buhari who spoke in Hausa langauage made it clear that his administration would not condone stealing of public funds meant to provide jobs for the teeming jobless Nigerian youth. “I heard that some people have started returning money; I will not believe it until I go and see for myself. “Imagine a situation where the former CBN governor who by God ‘s grace would later become the Emir of Kano raised an issue of missing billions of money, not in Naira but in Dollars, $20 billion. “What happened, instead of investigating to know whether it was true that the money was missing or not, they simply found a reason to remove him. So these are the issues we are talking about.. |

"To Honorable President Joko Widodo: "I sincerely appeal to you, Honorable Sir, to grant me a pardon from the death penalty. I believe and am certain that you have a compassionate heart and are very wise to make a humane decision. "As a mother, I have two children who are still small and need the love of a mother very much whom they love in return. "Honorable Sir, I believe that as the father of your child, you can feel what it would be like if your child were in the position of my own children, it is surely very painful because it would take away the right of my children to be with their mother, if my plea for pardon is not granted. "Honorable Sir, I believe that as the Father of the Indonesian Nation you should protect your children, above all those who are genuinely innocent. "I sincerely pray to be saved from the death penalty and to be given the opportunity to bring up my children. "May God always bless Honorable President Joko Widodo and his whole family." Atty. Olalia further indicated that "Mary Jane maintains absolute innocence. She may die but she firmly maintains she was a victim. "She tells Philippine private lawyers more details of her ordeal. "NUPL notices wide gaps in chain of custody of subject luggage from Malaysia to Indonesia that were all opportunities for placing or planting of heroin without her knowledge. "She is happy that a second judicial review was filed and that all efforts are being made to save her. She thanks all supporters. "Prison guards and officials very nice to Mary Jane and vouch for her amiable, thoughtfulness and bubbly personality. "Visits being prepared tomorrow and Monday for longer time, till 4 pm. Today's visit short because she is still in semi-isolation." For his part, Vice-President Jejomar Binay, who met his counterpart, Indonesia Vice President Jusuf Kalla in a private meeting at Bandung, handed over a letter of request from President Aquino asking President Joko Widodo for clemency on behalf of Veloso. Vice-President Binay told journalists upon arrival from Indonesia on Saturday morning that he hopes the appeal will be heard "as Veloso is the only one among the death convicts who is not a courier," and as this is the first time she traveled abroad, she is apparently only a victim of drug syndicates. At least three people are feared dead in an outburst of violence in Ilorin, as suspected hoodlums attacked residents of Agbarere and Ita-Ore. In the ensuing melee, many residential buildings were torched and several vehicles destroyed. The thugs were said to be avenging the raid of their hideout by the operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in search of suspected india hemp smokers. The anti-narcotics agents reportedly raided the den of the suspects around Idi-Ape area on Friday where some arrests were made. The fracas spread to other adjoining areas like Oke-Kura, Oja-Oba and Popo-Igbonna, and disrupted economic activities for several hours. It was also observed that bonfires were made along Popo-Igbonna street with the gun-wielding thugs shooting sporadically into the air. Our correspondent observed two police patrol vehicles conveying three people believed to have died in the melee. But the police spokesman, Mr. Okasanmi Ajayi confirmed two casualties in the unrest, saying men of the command are on top of the situation. He added that perpetrators of the fracas would be brought to justice no matter how highly placed. Speaking with newsmen, he said, "There was confrontation between miscreants and security operatives. It was as a result of problem between the NDLEA and drug users in that area. That was what caused the crisis and the police came and rescued the NDLEA officer and we are trying to control the miscreants there. Some houses have been attacked. We have arrested some people. I can confirm that two people died. They were attacking anything they see. They did not identify any special place to attack. They were just attacking." |

Former Super Eagles utility player, Garba Lawal, has advised coach Stephen Keshi to ensure that he gets it right this time. Keshi was reappointed as the Super Eagles coach on Tuesday after he signed a new two-year contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Lawal, one of Keshi’s biggest critics, believes [that] not everyone gets a second chance and, since Keshi was lucky enough to get one, he must endeavor to use it wisely. “He has a second chance now and he must use it wisely. “Not everybody gets a second chance and now that he’s lucky enough to get it, he must get it right this time. “In terms of player selection, he must avoid sentiments and pick players on form and merit. “We missed the last Africa Cup of Nations and we cannot afford to miss another one. This is a big opportunity for him and he must take it and make it count,” he said. Also, Lwal corrected what he termed “a growing impression”. He said: “I have nothing against him. Now that he has signed we have to support him. “But he must listen to advice and know that people will criticise him. You cannot be the coach of the Super Eagles and expect people not to criticise you. “Nigerians criticise everybody when they’re not doing well but that doesn’t mean they hate you. He needs to learn that. “I just hope this will turn out good in the end and I believe we have to support him,” he concluded. leadership.ng/sports/428031/lawal-keshi-must-get-it-right-this-time |

THE world watched in horror at the violence in South Africa, targeted at foreigners in several cities. Gangs of weapons-wielding youth descended on hapless foreigners, killing, maiming and destroying their property. Shops and restaurants were looted, and in most cases, these went on with law enforcement agents seeming to derive some pleasure from watching. Many trace the violence to a statement credited to the Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini, who called on foreigners, who he blamed for the high crime rates and unemployment among South Africans, to leave. Nigerians were a sizeable proportion of the attacked foreigners. No death was reported, but they suffered great losses – their businesses were targets. Many were injured. These attacks have been regular since 2008, the only difference each time is the increasing intensity. They are unofficial, but the official South African attitude to Nigerians is not much different. The repatriation of 124 Nigerians in March 2012 over alleged forged immunisation cards is one. There were sufficient grounds to believe that the Nigerians suffered that fate because they travelled on a Nigerian carrier. Only months ago, South Africa botched an arms deal with Nigeria and made headlines out of it. Nigerians are angry about the vehemence and barbarity with which South Africans attack fellow Africans even when it is obvious that there is live television coverage of the attacks. If anything, the unwillingness of the police to act, assures the attackers that they would be immune from punishment. We recall Nigerian contributions, officially, and individually to the liberation of South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Angola. The contributions were diplomatic, financial and extended to scholarships and training for their students. Since the collapse of apartheid, South Africa businesses have flourished in Nigeria, exploiting Nigerians, paying minimal wages, and repatriating hefty profits annually. Nigerians know these, including humiliation they face when they apply for South African visas while nationals of countries that supported apartheid require no visa to enter South Africa. Why are South Africans so hostile to Nigerians? We think it is in the interest of both countries to find out. The excuses about unemployment and crimes are speculations, especially when the menial jobs other Africans do would not appeal to South Africans and crime statistics do not support the crime claim. No reason justifies the attacks. We commend the patience of Nigerians who protested, instead of attacking South African interests in Nigeria. The Nigerian protesters warned both governments that time is running out for them to address the causes of the attacks. Our government should ensure South Africa pays adequate compensations for the losses. We would no longer sacrifice Nigerians for diplomacy. Let these attacks be the last source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/south-africans-attack-nigerians/ |
