Mindlog: Eyah!
Back then, I did 75hrs weekly (12.5hrs per day/ 6 days a week..20.00-08.30) during off term as a children residential support worker.
Had only one 15 year old in the residence, who had already eaten her dinner, in her bedroom, chatting with her friends over the phone and watching TV by the time I was to start my shift at 8p.m.
Spent the entire waking night, seated in the lounge having mugs of tea, watching Netflix on the big screen there and working on my dissertation....all I had to do, was be the adult awake in the house during the night and the company offered sponsorship for FREE, got it and still graduated from school then switched to another free sponsorship....LIFE WAS GOOD! what year did you enter? men na una enjoy UK oh, now if you see 15 hours you go day thank employer die. |

BettyO11: Now this is how to present things without being too encouraging or discouraging. People can now decide if they’re ready to face the consequences of relocating or staying in Nigeria. It’s different for everyone. We all should just do proper research, plan well, PRAY REALLY HARD and make the decision to go or to stay. I believe people just want those that are coming to know the reality here, however everybody won't have the same experience, that's just life. People say getting corporate jobs is impossible as a student but I can bet there would be students that still get that and work 20 hours in an office setting. Anyone coming also, please if you work in a tech friendly company you can also try and talk to your manager to retain your job and work remotely. I know guys who did this and still get paid in their workplace in Nigeria no matter how small. Also, an easy way to get a free DBS/some work experience is to join a volunteer organization in care. NHS usually has such volunteer positions. |

UK is tough no doubt so hoping to pay school fees with work is not possible. I have only worked about 20 days since I got in January and I’ve actually been searching very hard. However, in my case i am not pressured because my uncle paid most of my school fees and I had some money when coming over too.
People I know have been lucky to get good jobs though so everybody’s case is different, anyone coming just know the situation on ground and bring money to help the adaptation process. You may need to do an SIA license if you want to work in security which costs 500 pounds, that has helped some people I know get jobs.
Getting an accommodation may also be tough at first so there may also be a need to have some money for a motel for a while if you don’t know anybody. |

Igbamatigbi: You said “ after London there’s no better place than Manchester to get jobs” Manchester may be the second largest but you made it look like those are the better places to get jobs, that’s why i mentioned Liverpool as another place to get students jobs.
They are jobs in every city.
It’s experience that’s generates data, and from experience most students that I interacted with in my line of work didn’t find it hard to get student jobs with 20 hours in Liverpool.
Yes, I shared an experience, my sister school is York St. John London campus 80 percent of students in her class don’t get 20 hours weekly in London, most students had to move out to places like Leicester etc to get jobs .
Infact, after London, Birmingham is the second largest city in the U.K. Okay boss, maybe I am biased though because I have people that did well as students in London and I got jobs fast upon landing in Manchester. |

Igbamatigbi: Have you been in other cities to come to this conclusion?
I disagree with this.
My sister came to London as student and didn’t get student jobs for over 4 months, I had to relocate her to Liverpool where she got job the following week with a charity.
Liverpool region also called Merseyside is one of the largest region in England.
Liverpool is one the easier city to get student jobs. I also know other cities aside “London and Manchester “ that’s easier to get jobs
When we came as students some years ago, London was good and fast to get jobs but in the last 2 years it’s saturated and to get 20 hours is hard especially if you don’t drive, even the teaching assistant roles too it’s hard to get 20 hours this period. London is better for full time roles, but rent and transport will finish your money.
I stay in 3 bedroom with 2 toilets (family of 5) around Liverpool region and pay £650 per month, it’s a bit higher when you move into Liverpool but it’s still better and transport card per month is £72 that’s if you want to be going out almost every of the week It’s pure data, Greater Manchester is the second biggest economy in the UK. So statistically there would be more jobs, it’s that simple. Thar someone you knew got or didn’t get jobs doesn’t invalidate that as that could be skewed by personal experiences.

cashmyles: How is the Job availability there? What should one expect as a student? After London, I’ll say there’s no better place than Manchester. It may be tough for a month or two but you’ll get something maybe not up to 20 hours though because the demand is now less than the supply as many international students have flooded. Jobs you should be targeting as a start are steward, cleaner, retail and later on care. Teaching assistant is a soft job that can give 20 hours if you have teaching experience. One thing also, get police report when coming from Nigeria, some jobs might need it. |

BossFingy: Hello i got another offers in University of Bolton= Am just so confused about the one to follow up now.. how is life in bolton like, is the environment friendly or still expensive, are there higher chances of getting a job too..although the fees in bolton is a bit fair than that of Kingston, which should be more preferable,, ?? This may be late but I stay in Bolton, it’s a good area because it’s cheaper than Salford or Manchester but it’s easy to jump into Manchester, about an 1 hour plus by bus. Jobs you’ll be targeting will be in the whole greater Manchester which is connected by transport. I pay rent of about 715 pounds for a room Amd kitchen. I came with my bro so we split the rent. |

Also, look at Portugal, US, Australia and Canada if you don't mind the cold. Much better options at the moment

dapix: Wont be surprised if it is the company trying to buy cheap, while they pay those that don't want to sell the final amount. Very smart strategy. Exactly, announce 21 first and people refuse to sell them start buying above that price and people will be happy and think let they just sell since it’s higher then start selling, then announce 23 when a lot of people have sold. Companies in the process of buying out should have a lockup period. |
