Politics / Shuaibu To Osinbajo: Edo State, Youths Are With You For 2023 by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 8:21pm On Jan 29, 2022
Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has been described as the Presidential candidate young people will support come 2023.

Edo Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shuaibu, made this declaration today in Auchi.

"Your Excellency, just know that you have Edo, you have us, anything that you want to do, you have us and you have God. And by the Grace of God, we will have our own as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023,” the Comrade Deputy Governor declared

Comrade Shuaibu made the declaration while speaking at the installation of the Minister of State for Budget & National Planning, Prince Clem Agba as the Odumha of Auchi at the Otaru of Auchi Palace. The Vice President was the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion.

This will be the second statement of support from the opposition People Democratic Party (PDP) top member in weeks. About two weeks ago in Kano during the Sardauna of Sokoto Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture, the former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu had described Prof Osinbajo as the best candidate of the APC for 2023 Presidency, adding that many people are waiting for him to enter the race.

A visibly elated Comrade Shuaibu thanked the Osinbajo for taking time from his busy schedule to be in Auchi, adding that “by the grace of God, the young men and youths, we will mobilise ourselves so that we can take our destiny in our hands. The EndSARS was a clarion call to all of us.”

He then noted that “the era of God fathers are over, it is now the era of good leadership and progressive leadership. Men that have intellect, men that will turn our state into an industrial state so that those who are unemployed will be gainfully employed.”

It will be recalled that the clamour for the Vice President to enter the race for the 2023 Presidency is gathering momentum across Nigeria with more groups and notable individuals demanding that the Osinbajo contests for the number one position the in Nigeria.

Politics / 2023: Obasanjo’s Son Visited Me, Pledged Support For Osinbajo —ojudu by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 1:58pm On Jan 29, 2022
Olujonwo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has pledged to support Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) if he joins the 2023 presidential race.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu, made this known in a Facebook post on Saturday.

According to Ojudu, Olujonwo visited him on Friday to register his wish that the VP should run for President in 2023.

Ojudu, who works in the VP’s office, wrote, “Olujonwo Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, visited yesterday (Friday).

“He too, like many others, came to register his wish and aspiration that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo throws his hat in the rings for the 2023 contest.

“Smart and brimming with ideas, he promised that if Osinbajo heeds the call of Nigerians he will be willing and ready to volunteer to join the campaign train.

“Thank you Olu. I will pass your message across.”

The PUNCH had reported that Ojudu said he had been receiving threat messages from “irritants” for declaring that he won’t support the presidential ambition of All Progressives Congress National Leader, Bola Tinubu.

Ojudu had stressed that his decision not to support Tinubu was based on personal conviction, adding that any coercion to do otherwise would not be democratic.

In an earlier statement, Ojudu had said that his refusal to support the presidential aspiration of the former Lagos State governor should not portray him as a betrayer.

“The idea that everyone who has related with Tinubu and disagrees with him on this Presidential bid is a traitor and a betrayal is puerile. Many of us, his associates, were not made by him as you also want the world to believe.

“We were already made before meeting him and in the cause of relating we gave one another a helping hand… So, on this matter of 2023 I wish him (Tinubu) well but I cannot in good conscience give him my support or cast my vote for him in the coming primary. It is my right. I am above 60 years of age for God sake. I almost died seeking this inalienable democratic rights, held up in detention and severally tortured. Your god is not my god,” he had said.

Osinbajo was Lagos Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General from 1999 to 2007 when Tinubu was governor.

Tinubu had reportedly nominated Osinbajo to be the running mate of Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) in the buildup to the 2015 election.

Tinubu and Osinbajo were last seen together in public in late 2021 when the former returned from the United Kingdom where he underwent surgery and therapy for knee surgery.

Though Tinubu subsequently declared his intention to run for the exalted office on January 10, 2022, Osinbajo has not declared whether he would be running or not but his supporters have been urging him to do so and mounting campaign billboards in strategic places all over the country.

Politics / Corruption Is Cancer, We Must Call It Out —Osinbajo by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 1:46pm On Jan 29, 2022
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the pursuit of the common good requires a collective condemnation and exposure of corruption and corrupt practises, which he termed cancer to the country.
This is as he said only leaders inspired by a higher purpose other than their profit could bring about national transformation.

Osinbajo spoke on Friday in Abuja at the 1st Annual General Assembly of Catholics in Politics and Catholic Business Leaders themed ‘The Advancement of the Common Good towards Justice, Unity, Structure and Development of Nigeria.’
Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement he signed late Friday titled ‘Only leaders inspired by higher purpose, not personal profit, can bring about national transformation-Osinbajo.’

The Vice President who described corruption as a “cancer” noted that “the cancer in governments anywhere is corruption. When public officials, be they high or low in the executive, legislature or judiciary, are toll gates for the extortion of the populace while seeking government dispensations, the common good, happy and prosperous lives for the people is impossible.”
He added that the pursuit of the common good must “involve a relentless pursuit of integrity and transparency of public officers, we must think through the systems that will reduce human discretion in public-facing institutions. So we must, as a collective, condemn and call out corruption and corrupt practises.”

Osinbajo also encouraged Nigerians not to despair, despite some of the challenges, but to have hope and belief in the promise of a great nation while urging that Nigerians must be willing to pay the price to achieve national greatness by actively pursuing the common good of all, regardless of tribal and religious differences.

He also posited that transformational leadership, particularly in a multi-ethnic and multi-faceted country like Nigeria, is needed across all levels of government and spheres of society. Its primary focus is the pursuit of the common good to ensure fairness, justice, unity and development in a nation.
Highlighting why transformational leadership is critical to national life, the Vice President noted that it would spur positive changes across all sectors and spheres of society. He added that as a leadership model, transformational leadership operates by serving and uplifting others because it is servant leadership.

“The purpose of power is service, not domination; it is to uplift and empower others rather than to control or oppress. This is a model of leadership that is inseparable from our conception of the common good.

“Transformational leadership is, therefore, the pursuit of the common good. But the pursuit of the common good itself is not as easy as it sounds. This is especially so where the wounds and enmities of ethnic and religious conflicts are deep.

“The common type of leadership will seek the path of relevance and popularity within their own ethnic or religious camps by seeking only the good of their own. The servant-leader will serve his people by emphasising the letter and spirit of the gospel, that even our worst enemies were still made in the image of God. And the pursuit of the common good is the pursuit of the good of those who hate us and have hurt us even in the recent past,” he said.

Osinbajo affirmed that, contrary to opinion in some quarters, the country will not fall because it is being built and needs yet many more people to commit to building the sort of nation that Nigerians want.

“The throes and pangs of birth must not be interpreted as the pains of impending death. We are by the grace of God, more than able to overcome our present difficulties, and we will overcome them,” he added.

In attendance were the Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong; Deputy Governors of Osun State, Gboyega Alabi; Akwa Ibom State, Moses Ekpo; Edo State, Philip Shaibu; Prof. Nora Daduut; and Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, who was represented by Raymond Aina.

Politics / Supreme Court Justice: VP Did A Wonderful Job by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 7:23pm On Jan 25, 2022
As stakeholders in the justice sector in Nigeria converge on Abuja to fashion out ways of enhancing service delivery, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN has been commended for his contributions to the transformation of the Lagos State judiciary during his tenure as Attorney General.

Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, SAN and Justice Amina Augie, JSC, in separate remarks today at the opening of the 2022 Justice Sector Summit, in Abuja, recalled the efforts made by Prof. Osinbajo in driving judicial reforms in Lagos.

Moderating a panel discussion at the summit, Agbakoba described the VP as his hero especially in leading the charge for justice sector transformation in Nigeria.

According to him, “two heroes that I have, one is actually the Vice President, as Attorney General of Lagos State, you delivered quick and straight to the point, and things worked.”

The former NBA President noted that as Attorney General in Lagos State, the VP won the hearts of many through his pragmatic leadership of the justice sector in the State.

Corroborating the views of Agbakoba, Justice Augie noted that during his tenure as Attorney General of Lagos State, the VP “did a wonderful job and things worked well at the time”.

The Justice of the Supreme Court explained that “in those days, when our Vice President was Attorney General of Lagos State, I participated in at least 3 stakeholders’ forum in which papers were presented on what the government wanted to do in the justice sector in Lagos. Each time before he came up with a new law like the one on Civil Procedure and the rest of them, they held stakeholders’ forum and got contributions from everyone.

“They had a sort of synergy and it worked for everybody, and before you knew it, Lagos State would have come up with a new law that becomes a template that other states now followed.”

In his remarks at the event, Prof. Osinbajo urged stakeholders to work hard in reversing the negative perception about the speed of justice delivery in Nigeria, among other issues preventing the transformation of the judiciary in the country.

According to the VP, “there is also no question that the expeditious delivery of justice cannot wait any longer. The reputation of our system for repeatedly resulting in what the UK court of appeal described as “catastrophic delays” must be reversed.

“We can do better. We have to do better. Our problems are ours, not for spirits, to solve. We must be deliberate in our approach. We must rediscover those attributes that made Nigeria’s judiciary a supplier of high caliber judicial personnel to other countries on the continent.”

Other speakers at the opening session of the summit included the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Mallami; Justice John Inyang Okoro who represented the Chief Justice of Nigeria; representative of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Luke Onofiok , and the President of the NBA, Olumide Akpata.

Politics / Osinbajo Asks UN Security Council To Help Rid Nigeria, Others Of Terrorism by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 10:41am On Jan 22, 2022
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has asked the United Nations Security Council to collaborate with African countries to eradicate terrorism from the continent.

He said African countries faced severe threat of terrorism arising from the encroachment of global terror groups and their franchises into Africa. The council has 15 members.

Speaking virtually on Friday while delivering his special address at the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Osinbajo said, “It is imperative for the international community to make more robust interventions to clear terrorists from Africa just as it did in the Middle East and other parts of the world.

“The United Nations Security Council must find unanimity in working with and assisting African countries to eradicate the menace of terrorism on the continent once and for all.”

The vice-president was chosen to deliver one of the 12 Special Addresses at this year’s event. About 25 Heads of State and Government have featured at the virtual forum since Monday.

The 2022 virtual edition of the forum features a mix of visionary “state of the world” special addresses and ambitious high-level leadership panels focusing on critical collective challenges, among others.

The vice-president also called for a waiver on intellectual property rights to allow African countries to produce Covid-19 vaccines, to contain the spread of the virus and improve the protection of Africans.

This was as he said the defunding of oil and gas projects by multilateral finance institutions would have consequences on African economies and ultimately impede the process of phasing out more polluting fuels such as coal, diesel and others.

Osinbajo lamented that less than 10 per cent of African countries had vaccinated 40 per cent of their population, saying vaccination remained essential because of the emergence of variants that could be more dangerous than Omicron.

He added, “It has proven impossible for individual countries to contain the virus, as long as there are outbreaks in other parts of the world. There are also issues around African countries being able to produce vaccines. That is entirely possible with cooperation, especially around intellectual property issues.

“We have to look at issues around patent rights, intellectual property rights and exclusivity rights especially if we will improve the chances of African countries manufacturing vaccines. We have to look at relaxing those rights. Patent and intellectual property waivers will be important. No one seems to be making much progress on that.

“We can’t really talk about African countries producing their own vaccines if we don’t address those important structural problems.”

Speaking on climate change and Africa’s energy needs, Osinbajo called for continued investments in gas projects, saying gas remained a crucial transition fuel in Africa.

He added, “Again, I think President Buhari’s affirmation of our commitment to net zero emissions by 2030 is essential. Not only does it show the commitment of Africa’s largest economy, but also points out the need for global cooperation.

“For many African countries, especially the gas-rich countries, one of the biggest shocks is the notion that fossil fuels, including gas, should be defunded, especially by international financial institutions. We think gas as a transition fuel is absolutely crucial, not just for effective transition but also for our economies.

“We are faced with two challenges, the climate change challenge and economic development. And so for us, gas as a transition fuel is the only pathway. So this is why for us, we must be able to continue to attract gas investments and demand that we use gas for purposes of being able to have to transit from some of the more hazardous fuels, such as coal, and some of the heavy fuels, oil and all of that. Unless we are assisted in ensuring this, we may suffer not just from climate change but more importantly in economic development.”

Politics / We Appreciate Osinbajo’s Leadership ― World Economic Forum by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 7:01pm On Jan 21, 2022
Renowned global organisation for public-private cooperation, the World Economic Forum ((WEF), has praised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for his leadership as Nigeria’s number two.

This was stated by WEF President, Borge Bende, following the Special Address by Osinbajo at the virtual edition of the 2022 World Economic Forum tagged Davos Agenda.

The Davos Agenda 2022 featured “state of the world” Special Addresses and ambitious high-level leadership panels focusing on critical collective challenges. The Special Addresses were given only by a selected few world leaders and Osinbajo was the only one out of the 12 selected by WEF and represented Africa.

In his Special Address, Nigeria’s Vice President shared his insights on important and emerging issues in Nigeria, Africa, and the world, including the impact of Nigeria’s Economic Sustainability Plan in helping the country tackle effectively the socioeconomic fallouts of the COVID-19 pandemic, among other issues.

Speaking about Nigeria’s VP at the event, the World Economic Forum President Bende said about VP Osinbajo: “Your thoughtful answers and your leadership are highly appreciated. I am really thankful for your contributions, and that you could join us. Looking forward to seeing you very soon.”

Bende also said the Forum was delighted to have Osinbajo grace the 2022 Davos event “following the very successful country strategy dialogue we hosted in November with you.” He added that the feedback from Osinbajo’s contributions were great.

Recall that in November last year, the WEF organised a virtual interactive session on Country Strategy Dialogue on Nigeria, where Osinbajo made a strong case for the Nigerian economy, which he said is “set for effective growth and job creation with a renewed focus on digital economy, significant value addition in agriculture, other sectors including oil and gas, while boosting productivity generally.”

This year’s edition, which runs from January 17-21 featured presidents and global leaders. Vice President Osinbajo was the only African leader among the 12 global leaders that was chosen to deliver one of the 12 Special Addresses at the event.

Other leaders of government who delivered Special Addresses at the 2022 edition of the World Economic Forum Davos Agenda included China’s President, Xi Jinping; Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi; Israel Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett; Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio; Germany’s Chancellor, Olaf Scholz; Indonesian President, Joko Widodo; Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison; United Nations’ Secretary-General, António Guterres; and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Politics / BREAKING: Osinbajo Meets State Governors Over Fuel Subsidy, Launches COVID-1 by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 2:47pm On Jan 20, 2022
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is currently presiding over the National Economic Council NEC meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where a good number of state governors are in attendance.

Before the meeting kicked off, Osinbajo launched the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus NG-CARES Program.

The program is being funded under the World Bank N750million loan.

As at the time of filing this brief report, there are strong indications that the meeting would deliberate on the contentious issue of fuel subsidy.

DAILY POST reliably gathered that most of the state governors who are members of NEC are not favourably disposed to the situation where deductions are made from their federal allocations, which goes into subsidising fuel products for the populace.

Osinbajo serves as chairman of the National Economic Council while the 36 state governors are members, including the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed among other key agencies of government.

Meanwhile, at the federal level, the government appears to be at crossroads in taking concrete decisions on fuel subsidy removal owing to economic constraints.

Politics / 2023 Presidency: The Widening Gulf Between Tinubu And Osinbajo by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 9:24am On Jan 20, 2022
By
Iliyasu Gadu

In the run-up to the 2015 elections when the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC), having elected Muhammadu Buhari as their presidential candidate at the party’s first convention in Lagos, grandees of the party were trying to select who to run with him. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who had played a great part both in the merger of the political parties that formed the APC and in swinging the votes of the South West delegates to enable Buhari clinch the party presidential nomination wanted the position. He wanted it as a reward for his efforts and also to put him in pole position to eventually succeed Muhammadu Buhari at the end of his probable constitutionally allowed eight-year tenure should he win the 2015 elections. And Asiwaju Tinubu was not only adamant on his demands, but he was also as some party insiders say, willing to break the party if he was not allowed to have his way.

APC party stalwarts were equally insistent in their opposition to Tinubu. They pointed out that apart from the fact that within the context of Nigeria’s political circumstances, a Muslim-Muslim ticket consisting of Buhari and Tinubu would not sink well with the Nigerian voters and in the event of that, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would have no difficulty in roasting the APC at the polls.

With the numbers ranged against him and the superiority of the argument proffered by those opposed to him in the APC, Tinubu reluctantly agreed to stand down his position and with the honour accorded him to nominate a candidate as Buhari’s running mate, he chose Professor Yemi Osinbajo, former Attorney-General of Lagos and his protégé.

Tinubu’s choice of Osinbajo was strategic. Apart from being a Christian, as a relative political neophyte with no structures of his own, Tinubu reckoned that Osinbajo as Vice President would find it hard to raise the necessary political capital to pose any significant threat to his abiding presidential aspiration, which he hoped to re-launch towards the end of a probable Buhari Presidency from 2022 to 2023 by his calculations.

And for good measure, Tinubu decided to take two steps; to cold-shoulder Osinbajo so as not to encourage and make him feel comfortable enough to develop ideas of seeking to eventually succeed Buhari, and also to infiltrate Osinbajo’s camp with a network of informers who will report on every move he makes.

Sure enough, Tinubu and his camp have remained steadfast in the observance of these steps such that a gulf has been widening between the two ever since Osinbajo became the Vice-President. Throughout the reported travails of the Osinbajo in the Buhari Presidency, Tinubu has never been seen to lift a finger or say a word of encouragement or support for his protégé.

With the declaration to contest the 2023 presidency by Tinubu last week when he visited President Buhari at the Aso Presidential Villa, the genie is now out of the bottle.

With the declaration, I sought from a die-hard Tinubu loyalist who does not want his name in print, why his principal had not deemed it fit to hearken to the opinions of many Nigerians especially those from the South West to yield the ground for Osinbajo. His answer was decidedly aggressive and rhetorical; “Iliya, let me tell you that nobody in the APC had worked harder than Asiwaju Tinubu to install both the party and President Buhari to power. Common sense and morality dictate that Asiwaju should be given the right of first refusal if as agreed that the South West should take the shot after Buhari. And another factor many people have not considered is the Ogun State or specifically, the Egba-Ijebu political yoke in the South West. Awolowo, Majekodunmi, Shonekan, Obasanjo, Abiola, Diya and now Osinbajo are all from the Egba-Ijebu political mafia in Ogun State. Infact, they are all within a radius of no less than 100 kilometres apart. Must everything that comes to Yorubaland go to Ogun State alone? “he asked rhetorically.

He concluded “Tinubu is not just qualified constitutionally to contest; he is the best shot that the South West has to clinch the presidency after Buhari. Any other candidate from not just the South West but the entire south cannot make it’’.

If indications are anything to go by, the running political shadow boxing between Tinubu and VP Osinbajo will soon come fully to the fore. And Tinubu will likely get a good run from his protégé, VP Osinbajo for the 2023 presidential race. Although the VP has been tight-lipped about his rumoured presidential ambition, both his body language and moves in the public space, however, show that he is interested and will certainly in due course throw his hat into the ring. Kayode, an insider in the VP camp emphatically told me this much when I asked him whether, with the declared intention of Tinubu, the VP may likely yield to Tinubu his political benefactor; “Expect an announcement soon. As I talk to you, I am in Kano now helping to put finishing touches to the announcement of the VP’s 2023 presidential bid. The matter is beyond him because the overwhelming opinion in the South West and indeed the country is that the VP should contest. People see him as the best chance for the country to not just see off the gerontocrats that have maintained a suffocating stranglehold on the political fortunes of the country but also to enable the country to make a fresh start with competent hands, which the VP is and represents. The VP is not only eminently qualified, as Vice President to Buhari for seven years now but there is also no reason to expect him not to take interest in succeeding his Oga’’.

The die is cast as they say, between Tinubu and Osinbajo. In context, this promises to be one of the very important subplots in the race for the 2023 presidential elections. Indeed, for President Buhari, the APC and Nigeria by extension, this is the deciding political issue. If Tinubu does not get the APC ticket, expect an implosion in the party and further political crises in the polity. As APC presidential candidate providing the party does not disintegrate, VP Osinbajo will struggle against a formidable candidate that the opposition PDP will likely field in the run-up to the 2023 polls.

We are certainly living in interesting times.

Politics / 2023: Women’s Group Backs Osinbajo, Seeks Buhari’s Support by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 8:45am On Jan 20, 2022
Ahead of the 2023 elections, members of the National Coalition of Women for Osinbajo have said Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is one of the few Nigerian political aspirants who will not turn electoral victory into an opportunity for wealth accumulation and, therefore, Nigerian women will give him resolute backing.

The coalition’s chairperson, Rabi Dauda, also the leader of the pro-Osinbajo Progressive Women’s Group, said this on Wednesday while addressing reporters during a press conference in Abuja.

In its six-point declaration—which includes a call for the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the entire members of the Federal Executive Council to consider adopting Osinbajo as APC’s consensus presidential candidate—the coalition stressed that the 2023 general election would be a decisive turning point for APC and the entire nation.

The NCWO said, “We strongly affirm Nigerian women’s utmost confidence in the candidature of Professor Yemi Osinbajo as a people-focused leader with the suitable intellectual capacity and innate leadership qualities to move Nigeria forward, with emphatic attention to women progress and development.

“We demand the emergence of truly people-focused leadership at APC’s forthcoming convention and presidential primaries, either through consensus or voting processes, as we look forward to the unfettered emergence of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as APC presidential flag bearer in 2023 elections.

“We strongly appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari, members of the Federal Executive Council, state governors, party leaders at federal, state, local government levels and all genuine progressives among delegates to APC presidential convention to ensure the actualisation of an Osinbajo presidency in 2023.”

The coalition also urged the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee to strictly ensure that delegates to its national convention are not hijacked by those who have participated in looting state or federal resources in the past.

It said, “Our great party, APC, must seriously consider women’s collective calls for greater involvement of women and youth in critical positions within the party as well as local, state and federal administrations to be constituted by APC in 2023.

“While we commend the very gallant efforts of the Nigerian military and various security and law enforcement agencies involved in tackling the menace of insecurity across the nation, we also appeal for increased pace towards ending the insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes as women and children tend to be the worst affected victims of criminality and other anti-social acts.

“Lastly, we reaffirm our faith in one united Nigeria, with hopes for the genuine realisation of its bright prospects under a people-focused leadership that only the APC can guarantee.”

The women’s coalition further enumerated various leadership parameters that put Vice President Yemi Osinbajo ahead of other presidential aspirants.

It said, “Without any iota of doubt, we believe that the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as the 2023 presidential flag-bearer of the APC will allow Nigeria to realise these lofty collective progressive aspirations.

“Nigerian women believe in the candidature of Prof Yemi Osinbajo, a man whose credibility, objectivity and intellectual capacity have been proven over time. There is a need for effective steps to be taken to ensure that those who engaged in plundering state and federal coffers in the past are not allowed back into governance roles where trust and integrity matters.”

NCWO further appealed to party leaders and other stakeholders to deepen democracy, encourage productive dialogue, mobilise women and youth for optimal participation in the democratic processes and ensure free and fair elections.

Politics / Babafemi Ojudu: Not Surporting Tinubu Is Not Betrayal, I Won't Be Blackmailed by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 10:40am On Jan 18, 2022
By Babafemi Ojudu

I have seen a statement made by me, many years ago, to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu making the rounds. Yes I did make that statement. And more of such will come in my autobiography. We, together, have seen good days and bad days.

I and Bola Tinubu have come a long way and we have been there for each other. So let no one use my acknowledgment of his good deeds and my refusal not to support him in his bid for Nigeria presidency to portray me as a betrayer.

Tinubu remains my leader and I will forever cherish him and the contributions he made to my Organisation during our fight against the military.

He however knows I don’t follow the herd. I make my choices based on very rigid parameters . He will tell you I am very Independent in my actions and ways.

As a third year university student my dad chose to be in NPN. I never considered the fact that he fed me and paid my school fees to join him in a party I despised. I went to UPN and became a youth leader.

Tinubu will tell you that whatever and whoever Ojudu is committed to is in for 100 percent commitment. Reasons I did rather faced torture and possible death in General Sani Abacha’s detention than reveal certain things they wanted me to reveal about him.

The idea that everyone who has related with Tinubu and disagrees with him on this Presidential bid is a traitor and a betrayal is puerile. Many of us, his associates, were not made by him as you also want the world to believe.

We were already made before meeting him and in the cause of relating we gave one another a helping hand. As far back as 1992 when I came to know him I was already one of the editors of a popular news magazine with a good standing too in the civil society. I walked out of my job when our billionaire publisher (Chief MKO Abiola) requested I and my colleagues to apologize to General Ibrahim Babangida over a story critical of the regime. That was 1992.

When I left that job, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, a man whom I was indebted to greatly (gave me a scholarship in my school days alongside King Sunny Ade) invested in my publishing platform (The News, publisher of PM news). The same one that was consequential in the battle to bring democracy back to Nigeria.

At the conclusion of that struggle, Chief Fawehinmi insisted we seat out politics. Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu disagreed with this notion, and I did as well. Against an obvious choice to blind loyalty, I went along with Senator Tinubu even serving severally in critical roles as he assumed the Governorship position. My actions angered Chief Gani so much he asked that I repay his investments. Guess what? I gladly did.

So if my principled stance against NPN, against IBB and against “siddon look” was not betrayal of my father, Chief MKO Abiola and Chief Gani Fawehinmi respectively, why would my principled stance against our leader present ambition be.?
So, on this matter of 2023 I wish him well but I cannot in good conscience give him my support or cast my vote for him in the coming primary. It is my right. I am above 60 years of age for God sake. I almost died seeking this inalienable democratic rights, held up in detention and severally tortured. Your god is not my god.

Let no one think he can browbeat or blackmail me to do what does not go with my conscience or my ideals. Enough of your phone threats and embarrassment of my family members.

I know Tinubu. I respect and adore him. Many of his latter day supporters do not even know him. If they do, they won’t resort to emotional and physical blackmail. When Tinubu decided to go against Afenifere and the Yoruba elders in 2003 by not supporting President Olusegun Obasanjo, he wasn’t betraying the Yoruba nation or a traitor to Afenifere. He made a choice and history has been his judge. Let history be my own judge too. When he supported Chief Olu Falae against Chief Bola Ige , our respected leader, who fought for him to emerge candidate of Alliance for Democracy in Lagos, no one shouted betrayal.

For the irritants who have been sending threat messages to me and members of my family or calling to abuse me for not supporting Tinubu, do know that is not democracy. It is something else. I spent my youth years fighting autocracy and intolerance of the military and I am still willing and ready, even now, to stand up for what I believe , even if it will cost me my life. Enough said.
