Politics / Tinubu To Dump APC For SDP If… – Associate by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 6:13pm On May 17, 2022
Former Lagos state governor and Presidential hopeful on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Bola Tinubu has concluded plans to dump the ruling party, if the May 30 primaries are schemed against him, an associate of the former Lagos state government has said.

The associate who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Vanguard that the development was the reason former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal stated recently that Tinubu had plan B if APC primaries are manipulated against him.

Although, he noted that APC remains the primary platform Tinubu intends to actualize his dream of presiding over the affairs of the nation; other options including the SDP would be explored if the primaries come short of transparency and credibility.

“It is too early to ask if Asiwaju would leave the APC for another party. He is a big factor in APC, a party he helped formed, financed and nurtured into what it is today. We are not unaware of recent developments and attempts to insult a man who has paid his dues in the political evolution of this country. But that is not important for now. What I can tell you is that our leader, like other contestants, is looking forward to a credible process that would lead to the emergence of our flag bearer. But if that process is compromised, I can tell you for free that we will encourage him to explore other options.

“Yes, a lot has been said about SDP and Asiwaju. When we get to that bridge, we will cross it. SDP offered him a platform to become a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria years ago but for now, he is in APC and will remain there until circumstance dictates otherwise,” he said.

Tinubu is gunning for the sole ticket of the party alongside other formidable contestants such as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonayya Onu, Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello among others. In an interview with the media a few months ago, President Muhammadu Buhari had said that he would not reveal the identity of his preferred successor, lest he be eliminated.

Only recently APC chieftain and until recently a Presidential aspirant, Moses Ayom called on Babachir Lawal to withdraw his comment on Tinubu’s possible defection, labelling same as a threat to the Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee, saying “right now, the NWC is the leadership of the APC and it should be given all kinds of support to succeed. The idea of indirectly threatening the NWC that Tinubu has another option if he is not given ticket should not arise at all. As a committed APC leader from the Middle-Belt, I call on Babachir to withdraw the comments and apologize to the party immediately.”

Politics / 2023: The Coast Is Clear For Osinbajo To Emerge APC Candidate by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 11:12am On May 17, 2022
By Danladi Usman

The good news is here! Our preferred leader for 2023, the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, is emerging as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the coming presidential election.

Don't let anyone confuse you that 12 governors signed for Asiwaju Tinubu, his closest rival? Mind you, 14 is bigger than 12. But, there is even no exclusivity in signing, some of the governors who signed for Asiwaju signed for our PYO too, the star Boy! But they know where they are heading to.

See, for him alone, 14 governors signed his recently submitted Expression of Interest and Nomination forms of the party. He even got more than the statutory number of persons needed to sign and propose him to the party. Imagine, what the rule says is that, so far you are a party member, you are qualified to sign, but the governors for the seriousness attached to Osinbajo's candidature decided to monitor the process on their own. This is fantastic!

It is like the governors corroborated President Muhammadu Buhari, who has already given us the shadow of what is to come when he said he won't hand over to a corrupt politician or anyone who has been found to be corrupt. It now suffices to say that of all the top gladiators interested in becoming Nigeria's president in 2023, Osinbajo is the only incorruptible one. Kudos.

Everything has pointed to this. The coast is clear, he is the choice of everyone in this struggle for national reinventing, a foundation for progress that President Buhari has laid.

Nigeria is getting it right now, and we must just get it right this time round completely. After Osinbajo's emergence, let's rally support for him with our votes at the general elections to win overwhelmingly. Osinbajo represents the unity of Nigeria, the hope of a new Nigeria, and the general development of the country. He knows where they started, where it is now, and where to continue the work from -- and that is the stability we need, that is the definition of what he meant, saying, he would hit the ground running.

Osinbajo knows the security architecture of Nigeria too, being a former acting President, the only one who has ever attained this position among his rivals. This is a veritable credential distinguishing him. Osinbajo is the most qualified, we await his emergence on or before May 30 and 31, 2022, the dates set for the primary election, that is if the party is not going for the consensus arrangement.

Politics / Delegates In Jigawa, Says Nigeria Deserves The Best by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 3:44pm On May 15, 2022
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has met with stakeholders and delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State.

In the absence of Governor Badaru Abubakar, who was out of town during the visit, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abdulkadir Fanini Adamu, received Osinbajo.

Osinbajo told APC stakeholders and delegates that his main message was that for the 2023 elections, decisions should be based on what is in Nigeria’s best interest.

According to him, “We should make a decision based on the future of our children… We can make progress; we can move on. All I ask you to do is what is in the best interest of Nigeria; vote in the interest of our children.”

He also restated how his training and experience in governance serving as VP under President Muhammadu Buhari, would help him to lead the country effectively as president in 2023, if given the ticket and elected under the APC platform.

“As Vice President, the President has given me an opportunity that I do not think any other vice president has been given.”

Later while speaking during a brief chat with the media after the meeting, Osinbajo noted that that he was happy with the interactions with the Jigawa delegates.

“Obviously, all the issues that we discussed are issues that concern the country very significantly. We talked about agriculture, we talked about youth empowerment, education, technology and a wide variety of issues.

“I think it was extremely fruitful, and at least we all understand where we are coming from and where we ought to be in the few years ahead. All of us are very happy that we were able to have this engagement.”

Delegates who spoke during the interactive session, included members of the State House of Assembly, Local Government officials, grassroot leaders and women leaders.

Politics / 2023: I’m Most Experienced To Tackle Nation’s Myriad Problems — Osinbajo by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 7:37pm On May 12, 2022
Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday declared that his aspiration was necessitated by his commitment to offer himself for service to the people and the nation.

Osinbajo said that among the presidential aspirants in the All Progressive Congress (APC), jostling to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, he is the most experienced and prepared to be the next leader to address the myriad of challenges bedeviling the nation.

Osinbajo said this at the palace of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital on Thursday, in continuation of his consultation with stakeholders and APC delegates across the country ahead of the primaries.

According to him, his experience as the vice president and acting president has exposed him to the peculiarities and opportunities in the country, adding this has put him in a good stead to build on this and place the country on the pedestal of development.

Osinbajo added that working under President Buhari whom he described as transparent and honest leader is one of the things that has prepared him for the bigger task in leading the nation in 2023

He said, ” I want to say that my aspiration to be president of the country is one that is informed by first , the fact that God has given me the opportunity to offer myself for this country for the past seven years. For these years, I have served as vice president and acting president.

” I have also worked under a very open and transparent President who has given me every opportunities to understand some of the issues and challenges that affect a country of a size and diversity like Nigeria.

” So I have all these opportunities and I most say that having had those opportunities and when the time for people to put themselves forward to run as president, I believe it will be irresponsible of me after seven years, not join the race.

” So, among the aspirants I am the most with the experience and knowledge at the federal level to do this job and we will hit the ground running from day one, God willing.

” The time has come for me to put myself for the task ahead and I must add that my sole objective is to serve this country and the people, that is the reason why I am here in Ekiti to consult with the stakeholders and of course the party delegates.”

He commended the traditional ruler for his fatherly advice and efforts at ensuring peace and stability in the community , noting that his visit to the palace was heartwarming and treasurable.

Responding, Oba Adejugbe who eulogised the vice president for his contributions to the development of the country in the last seven years, disclosing that he has the needed qualities to be president.

Ewi who prayed for him on his aspiration, said, ” the next president should remember the traditional institutions for critical roles in nation building rather than advisory or visitations during elections every four years.”

Politics / Despite Form Denial, Jonathan Meets Adamu, Prepares To Run On APC Ticket by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 1:41am On May 10, 2022
Amidst attempt by loyalists of former president Goodluck Jonathan to stop him from running on the All Progressives Congress ticket, the former president, has formally met with the National Chairman of the ruling party in Abuja, apparently to clarify some grey areas regarding his candidacy.

Former President Jonathan, who was reported to have rejected a N100 million nomination form procured for him by some Fulani pastoralists, later met behind closed doors in Adamu’s house.

A source close to the former president said that the meeting, whose details were not made public, lasted between 9pm and 10 pm in a bid to sort out some grey issues regarding Jonathan’s bid to fly the party’s presidential flag in next year’s poll.

It was learnt that the confusion that trailed the purchase of the form for Jonathan arose because of the spirited efforts by his core loyalists in the People Democratic Party, PDP, to dissuade him from joining the APC and running on its platform, saying that such would be detrimental to opposition party and belittling of his image.

According to a reliable source, the former president had concluded plans to accept the nomination form and meet with the APC leadership since Sunday morning but was strongly prevailed upon by those seen as his ‘inner caucus friends’ to shelve the move and remain in the PDP even without being active in the party.

“These people have been pressurizing Jonathan until the very last minute not to accept to run on the APC ticket no matter how tempting the conditions may be. That was why the former president did not present himself to the APC National chairman on Sunday when the form was to be formally presented to him by the Almajiri who want to show him appreciation for what he did for them during his tenure by building schools and rehabilitating them,” the source said.

“The main argument of those opposed to Jonathan running on the APC ticket is that it would be belittling to his image and standing in the world for him to do so given where he had been and what he represents as a former president of Nigeria. But the point is that the deadline for picking the form is this week and if he does not accept the form, the window would be closed and the opportunity lost,” one source explained.

“That was why the former president had to meet Adamu last night and their meeting was very productive as both men came out happily at the end of the one-hour meeting in Adamu’s house in Abuja,” the source explained.

It will be recalled that following the purchase of the form for Jonathan, his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, had described the action as insulting and unacceptable to Jonathan, saying that he was not consulted.

But a close source confirmed last night that Jonathan was moving ahead with the plan to run on the APC ticket.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has called for prayers and support of Nigerians to enable him succeed on the task ahead of him

Adamu, represented by the Speaker of Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, at the APC Stakeholders valedictory session in Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone harped on unity of party members noting that that APC would provide a level playing ground for all its aspirants at the forth coming primary elections.

The APC chairman urged aspirants to accept the outcome of the forth coming primaries in good faith, unite and work for the success of the party beyond 2023, assured that the party will provide a level playing ground for all.

“I want to appeal to all aspirants to accept the results of the primary election in good faith and not to leave the party but stay to build it to succeed and rule beyond 2023. There is surely a reward for every loyal party member.”

Politics / ‘An Insult’: Jonathan Rejects APC Presidential Form by Ebunoluwa2020(f): 1:21am On May 10, 2022
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has rejected the presidential form of the All Progressives Congress purchased for him on Monday by a group of his supporters from the north.

Dr Jonathan’s Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, said in a statement hours after the news that the group had bought the form for him broke that the former did not authorise the purchase and consider the move by the group ‘an insult’.

“We wish to categorically state that Dr Jonathan was not aware of this bid and did not authorise it,” the statement read in part.

“We want to state that if the former President wanted to contest an election, he would make his intentions clear to the public and will not enter through the back door.”

In recent months, there have been increased speculations about whether the former President will run for his old post in in the 2023 general elections and there have been calls for him to do so.

Although he is not a member of the APC, speculations have intensified in recent weeks that he is set to switch from the Peoples Democratic Party to contest for President in 2023.

But the former President has yet to state whether he would contest or not, neither has he spoken about the possibility of switching parties.

“While we appreciate the overwhelming request by a cross-section of Nigerians, for Dr Jonathan to make himself available for the 2023 Presidential election, we wish to state, that he has not in anyway, committed himself to this request,” Eze said.

“Buying a presidential aspiration form in the name Dr Jonathan without his consent, knowing the position he had held in this country, is considered an insult to his person. The general public is therefore advised to disregard it.”

A coalition of northern groups purchased the APC presidential nomination form and the expression of interest form at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, informing journalists that it was for Dr Jonathan.

Sporting fez caps with the inscription ‘run Jonathan run’, members of the coalition said the former president is the most qualified person to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

In rejecting the forms, Dr Jonathan kept his plans close to his chest.

The purchase of the forms was the latest move in efforts by people who identify as his supporters to get him to contest.

In April, a crowd of supporters had held a rally, calling on him to join the race.

Addressing them he said, “Yes, you are calling me to come and declare for the 2023 presidency, yes I can’t tell I am declaring; the political process is ongoing, just watch out,” he said at the time.

If elected as President again, Jonathan can only serve for one term of four years, according to the constitution.

He was first elected in 2011 after completing the tenure of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

President Buhari defeated Jonathan in the 2015 presidential elections.
