Phones / Five Reasons Why Your Itunes Payment In Naira Do Not Pull Through by edewojames(m): 11:20pm On Sep 20, 2017
Probably, you're trying to pay up your subscription on iTunes store or Apple music with Nigeria ATM card but it didn't pull through, below are five reasons why this may have occurs and the solutions to it.

You well know that since 2016 Apple has started allowing payment of subscription on iTunes and Apple music using Nigeria currency, Naira. Before then, Nigerians who subscribe to these services make use of dollar credit cards. Since they have to pay in dollars. However, from December, 2016 onward, Apple has allowed payments to be made via Naira.

When it begins many persons have complained of the impossibility of this as Nigerian ATM cards weren't working for these procedures. A source claimed that when, Apple introduces these payment method, only UBA bank's ATM was able to processed the payment.

However, from Apple community, I gathered that the issue of the inability to pay lies with the Nigerian banks and not with Apple. This issues may have been resolved by banks. However, if you still experience it, any of the methods below may be a way out of the challenges.

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) This is also called cardholder preferred currency (CPC). DCC is the process whereby the amount of a Visa or MasterCard transaction is converted by a merchant or ATM to the currency of the payment card's country of issue at the point of sale, as explained by wikipedia.

What this means is, when you write out your card information when paying for iTunes or Apple music, your bank (merchant) will convert and process the payment using the Naira, instead of dollars. So, if you try paying for these services and you receive an SMS telling you DCC issues, then it means that your bank (merchant) do not yet have this service available. What you need to do is try another bank. To my knowledge, GTB has this service.

One Time Password (OTP) Some merchant sent a one time password to your phone number. The password sent is what you will use to complete your payment. You cannot use the pin anymore once it is used. A reason for using OTP is for security purposes. If you have lost your ATM card phone number, then you will not be able to complete the payment process for your iTunes or Apple music subscription. What you will do is go to your bank to change your phone number to the current one you're using. By the way, do not forget to tell your banker about the problem.

No Cash in Your Account If you do not have money on your bank account while you tried to make payment on iTunes store or Apple music, you may not be able to use the card any other time especially when you now have money on your bank account. So, ensure that you only use your ATM when there is money in your bank account.

Your ATM card blocked Your ATM may be block for the third reason mentioned above or for non-corresponding phone number. If this happen then, you cannot subscribed for iTunes or Apple music services. You will need to settle the issue with your bank before you can continue the online payment.

Change your Billing Address The fifth way I think you can use to settle this issue is by changing your billing address. If you use you address in Nigeria, then you must pay in Naira and it is also possible that your bank (merchant) has not solved the DCC issues. Then, the last advice I have for you is to change your billing address to USA. With this you can use your Nigerian ATM card to pay for your Apple iTunes and music subscription.

Well, this is all I have for now. If you have any other idea on how to handle this, I appreciate you tell me and other readers of this blog by commenting on the comment box below.

Phones / The Leaks Of The Iphone 8 Was 90 Percent True by edewojames(m): 8:16am On Sep 16, 2017
It is my custom to provide latest leaks about upcoming Smartphones. So, I decided to go through all the leaks to discover with ones were false. All the leaks where true except for mismarching. Some leaks were for the iPhone X but where reported to be for iPhone 8.

The first mismatch is the price. It was leaked that the price for iPhone 8 will be $999 but it ended up to be lower than that. However the $999 price was actually for iPhone X. While iPhone 8 costs $699 and iPhone 8Plus costs $799.

Next is the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus which was never released. It was noticed that the iPhone 7s turns out to be iPhone 8. And the iPhone 7s Plus becomes iPhone 8Plus. Well, that all that was mismatched. However, the remaining leaks was true.

One of such is that the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will not have a Touch ID but instead a facial ID come up strong and Apple said is the best ever security. Also the face detection recognition will also be used via Apple pay.

The next is the OLED display. Apple changes from LCD display to OLED display from the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus. The phone dual rear camera was reported true.

The system on chip was well known to be Apple A11 but know one knew they will attach additional name to it that A11 Bionic and Apple believes it is the most powerful chip ever for smartphone with Artificial Intelligence. But Apple is not the first Tech company to make chip with Artificial Intelligence, AI, Huawei was. At the IFC event Huawei unveiled the first ever chip set with AI ability.

Also, the iPhone 8 and its sister iPhone 8Plus will be using the iOS 11 operating system which is already available for download. That's all for now, what do you think about the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Let me know in the comment box.

Business / ICT Sector Contributes 1.08 Percent To NSE Market Capitalization For August 2017 by edewojames(m): 3:50am On Sep 04, 2017
The ICT sector of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, contributed just 1.08 percent to Market Capitalization. This is very infinitesimal especially as we know that ICT is a very important part of the growth of a Nation. United States, China, South Korea and other developed countries are what they are today as a result of the development of its ICT sector.

The Financial service sector is leading on the Market Capitalization with 84 percent this week. While the consumer service and the conglomerate sectors have 5 percent and 3 percent respectively. The remaining 8 percentage is for other sectors. On which the ICT sector only contributed 1.08 percent.

Though, the Federal Government is providing enabling environment for the growth of the ICT sector, there are need for more ICT companies in Nigeria to be listed in the Exchange. Doing so, will add more value to the market capitalization as well as the All Share Index, ASI. In 2016, the Vice President of Nigeria said the sector will be contributing between 25 and 30 percent to the Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

Top well know ICT companies especially in the telecommunications subsector have big companies that contributing huge amount to the GDP and to government revenue. MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9Mobile, the former Etisalat, has invested huge amount of money running into trillions of Naira. But this figure is not yet reflected in the Market Capitalization, simply because they are not yet in the capital market.

To be listed in the flour of NSE, a company must be a Public Liability Company and must have traded in Nigeria for more than ten years. Very few or probably one of the telecom companies have reached 10 years in Nigeria. Probably an exemption should be made for this sector so that they can be listed in the Exchange.

This is how I arrived at the 1.07 percent Market Capitalization for the ICT sector. Using, August 30, 2017 market price available at the Exchange website for the ICT sector, I computed the following market value for each of the companies in the ICT sector.

CHARMS PLC, N1.17 billions; COURTVILLE, N1.78 billions; CWG, N16.2 billions, ETRANZACT, N105 billions; NCR, N0.58 billions, OMATEK, N7.35 billion and TRIPPLEG, N0.59 billions. The Market Capitalization for the ICT sector sum up to become N131.84 billion. The total Market Capitalization is N12,237.48 trillion. From this, I arrived at 1.08 percent share of the ICT sector to the Market Capitalization.

Phones / The Telecom Industry Provides $68 Billion FDI, NCC by edewojames(m): 7:31pm On Sep 01, 2017
The Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC, revealed that the Nigeria Telecommunications sector have since in the year 2000 attracts a total of $68 billion Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, in Nigeria.

The Telcos ecosystem begins when Econet Wireless begins operations in Nigeria. Later on MTN, Glo and of Course Etisalat, Visaphone and Multilinks also comes in. Fast forward, Econet wireless later becomes Airtel which is Nigeria second largest telecom provider. Also Etisalat, in the middle of this year becomes 9Mobile.

The population of Nigeria which is more than 180 million according to World Bank "doing business" report. However, more than 91 million are using the internet regularly. This represent almost 50 percent of the population. While more efforts are needed to ensure that more Nigerians are connected to the internet, the number is higher when compared to other countries in Europe aside Russia.

Nigeria Telecommunications industry will continue to grow in the coming years especially as the Federal Government has finally show commitment to the sector and has also introduced an ICT university. Further, the number of web and mobile apps developers have increased in Nigeria. As a result, many of them has decided to commence technology businesses in areas of finance, agric, education, health and more to help solve various social and financial challenges in Nigeria.

More funds have also entered the ICT ecosystem as many Nigerians tech startups have succeeded to attract funds from abroad and within to grow their startup businesses. This will certainly increase the FDI in Nigeria.

As posited by Check Point, the attacker used a social media account with the motto: "get rich or die trying." From which he gets e-mail he uses to launched it's attack. He used NetWare malware, a remote access Trojan which allows full control over infected machines, and Hawkeye, a key-logging program. Using a fraudulent email which appears to originate from oil and gas giant, Saudi Aramco, the world second largest daily oil producer, the cyber criminal target financial staff within companies, trick them into revealing company bank details, or open the e-mail's malware infected attachment.

So far, there has been 14 successful infections and such has earn the criminal thousands of dollars said Check Point.

"It's particularly striking that his techniques display a low level of cyber skills. His fraudulent e-mails are crude and unsophisticated; there is almost no research or social engineering involved in creating them," says Doros Hadjizenonos, Check Point SA's country manager...

When it comes to internet connection speed, the worldwide country ranker has ranked Nigeria 95 out 189 countries under surveillance. The ranker based it parameters on speed of downloading an HD movie of 7.5GB and the mean speed of download.

The mean speed of download for Nigeria is placed as 3.15. It will take 5 hours, 25 minutes and 27 seconds to download an HD movie of 7.5GB. Other Africa countries on the list are Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Liberia, Uganda, Rwanda, Tazania, Mozambique, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Togo, Cote D'Ivoire, Egypt, Senegal, among others.

Kenya, Morocco, South Africa ranked top before Nigeria while the others ranked below Nigeria. It is surprising that United States of America which I expect to rank number one ranked 21 and Singapore ranked first on the list with a mean downloading speed of 55.13 and 18 minutes 34 seconds to download an HD movie of 7.5GB.

Nigeria Telecoms companies should therefore endeavor to improve their ranking. You can read the details HERE.

Business / Quickcheck, Nigeria Fintech, Uses AI To Credit Score Borrowers by edewojames(m): 5:52pm On Aug 15, 2017
One of Nigeria microfinance fintech, QuickCheck now use machine learning to credit score borrowers. The fintech uses mobile app on Android phones to help people borrow small amount of money. The startup algorithm makes sure that the approved borrowers get cash in a few seconds. The mobile platform was launched in July 2016 that is more than a year now.

In an interview with Disrupt-Africa, Bola Martins-Kuye a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer , CEO said:

“Our ultimate goal is to be a digital bank in the customer’s pocket where they can get very cheap loans, save, take advantage of the power of group buying, and perform basic banking needs,”

“Our idea is to reach the previously financially underserved through a micro-lending system, and build financial profiles for them, hence ensuring financial inclusion. There are over 54 million financially underserved in Nigeria. This is a large market which traditional banks can’t solve due to bureaucracy, lengthy process and huge demands for collateral and low returns for the work required.”

“We have over 10,000 good customers who always pay on-time, with over 60 per cent of them being returning customers,”

“Being a data-driven company, we constantly perform analysis both on the loan data and user experiments to figure out what’s our best move. We found the market to be highly receptive to the idea of a mobile bank, in addition to easy credit access, and that’s where we are headed,”

“We see small loans as a “trojan horse” strategy to get into people’s smartphones, and then get them to use us as their digital bank. We want to be Nigeria’s largest retail bank, without any physical branches,”

“These are essential to the functioning of the economy – the vast majority of all loans are given by those 600 institutions. That’s why they exist in Nigeria and in the broader emerging markets. Without them, 90 per cent of the banked population would not get loans, neither would 100 per cent of the unbanked. But there is still a lot of bureaucracy involved,” he said.

“We believe in equal access to finance, where it should be cheap and serve a purpose.” he concluded.

The firm wishes to be the most popular micro finance fintech brand in Nigeria and also in other parts of Africa. Backed by See stars World, a totally sum of $411,000 in debts and in equity was used to finance the startup. As a result there are over 40,000 users and 93,000 applications. The startup has also made $100,000 in revenue.

The micro finance fintech borrows a maximum of N30,000 per month. Though individuals and business can borrow more than that if they meet the criteria.

Phones / Domain Names In Nigeria Stood At 93,317 In July by edewojames(m): 10:10am On Aug 14, 2017
Domain names in Nigeria, now totalled 93,317 in July according to the statistics provided by Nigeria Internet Registration in Nigeria, NiRA confirmed this recently. The total number of domain names registered in Nigeria domain registration (that is .ng) domains were 90,969 during June and 89,184 in May.

There was an increase in domain count month-on-month. From May to June there was an increase of 1,785 while from June to July there was an addition of 2,348 domains. On average there were 2,066.5 domains that uses .ng domain count month-on-month from May to July. If this trend continues, it is likely that the number of domains count in Nigeria registry may reach 95,000 approximately and may over 100,000 domains at the end of 2017.

The President of the Executive board of NiRA stated something similar in a news letter that accompany the above report. He stated:

It is heart-warming that the number of domains in the registry continues to grow in excess of 2,000 domains monthly. This is due to the hard work of the Registrars and the Resellers, in making sure that .ng continues to be the domain of choice for all Nigerians. Thank you for your hard work in this regard.
At the current rate, the number of active .ng domains will cross the 100,000 mark between October and November 2017. It is a milestone that we will celebrate, and is worthy of being celebrated.
We need to get many more people on board, but some Nigerians still live in denial. They claim that the Nigerian string is too long, and sometimes expensive. I went past the delivery truck of a courier company, which for this message, I will call “Distro”, with the domain name distro-ng.com. If the same company had registered distro.com.ng, it is the same length as distro-ng.com and costs much lower.

But that is not all. As you can see from the table below.

Source: NiRA

Registration for domain names where 4,122 in May, 3,947 in June and 4,363 in July. The renewals were 2,032 in May, 1,884 in June and 2,143 in July. Domain transfers stood at 64 for May, 58 for June and 50 for July.

While domain names transfer dropped month-on-month, domain registration and renewal fluctuates on the same periods under considerations. If domain transfers continues to drop, it will have very little effects on achieving the 100,000 domains names at October and November as stated by the president. As long as domain name registrations and renewal continue to increase.

Moreover, domain name registries and resellers are encourage to seek out for companies and other business to transfer their websites to Nigeria domain registry. Probably, promotional coupon codes can be made available from time-to-time so that this NiRA can achieve this goal on a platter.
