Business › Re: Moniepoint Case Study Sheds Light On The Trends In Community Night Life by eepeepook: 5:53pm On Feb 25 |
Let me book space here in case this hits front page. Naijaisours: New Moniepoint case study sheds light on the digital payment infrastructure powering community nightlife across the country
Moniepoint Inc., Africa’s leading all-in-one financial ecosystem, has released a new case study titled “The Business of Community Nightlife in Nigeria,” providing a rare, data-driven look into the country's informal night economy. While high-end "Detty December" venues grab headlines with daily revenues of ₦360million and table prices reaching ₦1.2million, Moniepoint’s research shifts the spotlight to the "community nightlife" where roadside bars, suya spots, and neighborhood joints form the bedrock of social life for millions of Nigerians.
The robust study was drawn from transaction data across more than 27,000 clubs, bars, and lounges sitting on Moniepoint's payment rails alongside fieldwork with nightlife operators and workers across the country. Combining anonymised transaction data processed by Moniepoint with field interviews and observational research across multiple Nigerian cities, the study provides a rare, ground-level view of how money, labour, and social life intersect after dark.It is the latest in a series of sector-specific studies by the company aimed at bringing data visibility to Nigeria's informal economy.
According to the report, in a stark contrast from wider informal economy trends, cash plays a diminishing role in nightlife payments. The report shows that bank transfers dominate, followed closely by card payments, with cash actively discouraged due to security concerns. Moniepoint's data shows that transfers outpace card payments by nearly 2 million transactions during peak nighttime hours across its network.
One of the study’s most operationally significant findings concerns the timing of spending. Nightlife in Nigeria runs long but economically, the night is decided early. Transaction volumes begin climbing sharply from 8pm, peak before midnight, and then decline steadily even as venues remain full. By the time the night is at its longest, purchasing activity has already wound down. However, for bar operators, this has clear practical implications - the most critical hours for staffing, stocking, vendor payment and cash flow management are the earliest hours of the day between midnight and 6am.
The report further underscores the sector's role in employment, noting that local bars typically expand their workforce by 30-50% on peak nights. Conservative estimates suggest at least 54,000 people are engaged in nightlife labor every night across Nigeria.
“Nigeria’s local bars and night-time operators are not peripheral to the economy, they are a critical part of its architecture. We see a substantial and sustained economic sector that employs hundreds of thousands of Nigerians every night and deserves the same attention we give to agriculture, healthcare, and retail. Our goal is to make sure every one of those businesses has the tools to grow. From giving credit to finance renovations and sound systems to providing same-day settlement that allows vendors to restock and with tools like Moniebook that power inventory management and reconciliation, Moniepoint is ensuring that this vital artery of the nation's economy remains viable and empowering,” said Tosin Eniolorunda, Co-Founder and Group CEO, Moniepoint Inc.
Other key interesting findings include:
The most common transaction narrations from the data sourced - “food”, “pay”, “sent”, “pos”, “cash” - reflect the full breadth of nightlife spending: street food, club entry, lounge tabs, transport, and afterparties. Digital payments have gained huge traction in Nigeria’s social space.
While alcohol remains a key revenue driver, the data shows that food is the quiet stabiliser of Nigeria’s night economy, particularly in local and informal settings. In several neighbourhood venues, bottled water and meals outsell beer and spirits, especially early in the evening.
Lagos leads in sheer concentration of nightlife establishments, with 4,856 bars, clubs, and lounges on the Moniepoint network. FCT follows with 2,515, then Rivers (2,362), Delta (1,930), and Edo (1,574).
Katsina leads the country in nighttime food truck payment value, with vendors pulling in over ₦130 million in the last 12 months. Kwara State leads in transaction count. Nigeria’s nightlife economy is distributed, not overly elitist.
On the lending side, the report notes that a significant share of loan requests from bar and lounge operators is directed toward renovations, furniture, lighting, and sound systems showing that investments intended to attract and retain customers in a competitive sector where ambience plays a decisive role.
Moniepoint continues to fuel this sector through innovative features like "POS Transfers" and by assigning a dedicated bank account to each terminal, the system provides an instant "audio-visual" confirmation, a signature "ping”, that allows service to continue without the friction of waiting for SMS alerts or verifying screenshots. Furthermore, in addressing the unique safety needs of consumers, Moniepoint cards are designed without visible card numbers, expiry dates, or CVVs, ensuring that a customer’s financial information remains secure.
As Nigeria’s largest distributor of financial services, Moniepoint's ongoing commitment to financial inclusion and economic development has positioned it as a catalyst for growth across Nigeria and beyond. The company processes billions in transactions monthly and continues to expand its reach, supporting millions of businesses with payments, banking, credit, and business management solutions.

Travel › Re: My DIY Self Help Passport Experience At 19: Grateful I Didn't Die. by eepeepook: 5:50pm On Feb 25 |
All these AI write-ups literally are the death of this forum. It’s already reached the point where users argue using bots to highlight points. LadyAnuelle: Nigeria is tiring, honestly. So alright, let me get to the main gist. I applied for an international hackathon that covers the cost of visas, accommodation, travel, etc. Up till now, I’m still waiting for the nominations to be released.
For some backstory: I’m not wealthy, just from a slightly less-than-middle-class family. I’m the middle child, often overlooked and I want to make a name for myself so my dreams won’t be shattered, by God’s grace.
I applied for the hackathon on January 19th. I was clueless about the passport process, so I researched. My dad said he’d help me, but I didn't hear from him till I took matters into my own hands on February 12, 2026. I researched the DIY method because that is what I know how to do best. I filled the application online and it was seamless.
When it came to the payment part, that was when my inexperience caught up with me. I told my dad the exact amount I saw (100,000), and I am grateful he sent 105,000 because the stupid hidden fees made it ₦104,001.
Fast forward to a Wednesday. I woke up at 4 AM to pay. I’m using OPay because I don’t have a regular bank account for now, and I opted for Payfixy bank deposit (the most stupid thing to ever do). I paid 104,100 because I was afraid of other fees. My heart was in my chest. The transaction failed AND THEY DEBITED THE MONEY! All that was in my mind was... "how will I tell my dad?" "I was so stupid," etc. I contacted customer support at 9 AM; they replied it had been refunded. I checked, it was there, and I almost cried.
So that Wednesday, I wanted to pay again using a card because I heard it was safer. And do you know what OPay did? They told me I’d exceeded my sending limit because of the previous failed transaction! That day was hectic. I had classes from 10–12, 2–4, and 4–6 (I’m offering 15 courses). I walked like a ghost. My laptop even broke because I was so absent-minded, though thank God it was fixed later that day. The next day at 2 AM, I tried again. It worked.
Later that Thursday, the application was rejected because my Certificate of Origin wasn’t readable. I got a call in the middle of class telling me to bring the physical cert for biometrics. I edited the scan to be clearer and re-uploaded it. It was vetted and approved that same day. I made my appointment for the 19th of February.
19th February came o.
Hmm.
I woke up in the morning by 6, I was having classes 8-10, 10-12. I then texted the class representative that I couldn’t make it that day and he should at least tell the lecturers. He agreed and I boarded a bike to the National immigration service. The bikeman took me to God knows where.
Omor the anger. The frustration. The confusion.
A helpful person came and told us the location for the office… which wasn’t even far. He dropped me off there and demanded I pay him more money. Mind you before I got on that bike, I asked him if he was sure he knew the place and the goat said yes. I asked more than three times. Long story short I paid him extra (total fee was twice the amount to go from the office to my home.)
I went to the passport office and immediately, an officer came up to me.
Let me tell you about the officer. He was a plateau man, asked uncomfortable questions claiming he'd help only to waste my time and cause me more mess, so let's call him DD.
Honestly, the officers were uncomfortable. As another officer was verifying my documents, he started asking uncomfortable questions. He saw my dad as my next of kin but ignored that, noticed that I put my own phone number as contact and started reprimanding me that it was supposed to be my father or husband. He asked why I didn't have a husband and said I was "empty" (in the sense we both know). They all started laughing.
He criticized me for not speaking Hausa fluently even though I grew up there, said I am "too tall," etc. Mind you, I am 19. They saw my birth date as 2006 and were still saying rubbish. I was quiet because you never know when you’ll enter their bad side. It was annoying to say the least. THe other officer verified my documents and I was given a long ass lecture about nothing in particular. As I was done with the biometrics. I went to the office and they told me it would take 6 weeks.
DD said he would "help" me and collected my number. Yesterday, he gave me a missed call at night. I called him back this morning and he asked when I needed the passport. I said March. He said I should have applied for "Express" and that he "knows somebody." I’m putting this in plain terms because it gets worse. He said the Express fee is a "large sum" and he’d ask his person. Sometimes I feel like people take me for a fool. I told him thank you. I’m not paying for any Express until March 10th if I see no sign of it being produced. I’ll just play along with him for now. The Application portal already showed: Production Queue (Passport production is in progress).
I’m just grateful to God that the process was smooth otherwise.
Lessons Learnt:
1. Avoid Bank Deposits: When paying on the portal, use the "Card" option. "Bank Deposit" via Payfixy is risky and can lead to trapped funds. 2. DIY is Possible: You don't need a "connection" to start the process. The online portal works. 3. Stay Calm: Even when officers try to intimidate or mock you, keep your eye on the goal. Don't let them rattle you into paying unnecessary bribes.
My Steps:
1. Research the DIY process thoroughly before starting. 2. Fill the form online accurately. 3. Have a bit extra in your account for the ₦4,000+ "hidden" processing fees. 4. Capture your biometrics and ignore the "side talk." 5. Monitor the Tracker: My status changed to "Production Queue" within days of capture without paying any "Express" bribe.
Any tips on how to combat DD, or maybe what I'm thinking maybe different from reality?? |

Mayweather must’ve gambled more than he could chew. He’s already set a bout against Mike Tyson. Now this? He should go for therapy to quit his gambling addiction. Everybody knows money is why he performs exhibition matches. Pacquiao will want to dominate Mayweather, but there is nothing he can do since knockouts are out of the question. Boxing legends Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are set to rematch on September 19, 2026 in Las Vegas at The Sphere, streamed live on Netflix — reigniting one of boxing’s biggest rivalries. |

Valentines is a day of love. Nobody made the rule if it was for a partner or one’s self. If I check now, you’ve never been to a gym. The last time you played soccer was likely in primary school and you’d be shocked to realize that spas offer full body massages.
Show yourself love on the day by:
1. Kicking off with exercise or prayers. 2. Go for a pedicure, manicure and full body massage. 3. Cut your hair. 4. Go and buy ice cream. 5. Visit the cinema or a recreational park. Play your favourite sport if the first two aren’t available. 6. Prepare your favourite meal. If you can’t cook, go and buy it. 7. Call your family members and discuss with them. Don’t waste the day on any idiotic female. |

Crime › Re: Man Released After Three Years In Detention Over False Rape Allegation by eepeepook: 1:18pm On Feb 21 |
This will be the new trending topic on Nairaland. From today till Thursday don set. Savageman247: Man Released After Three Years in Detention Over False Rape Allegation Against Daughter
In a heartbreaking case that highlights the devastating impact of false accusations, a Nigerian man has been freed after spending three years in detention on baseless charges of defiling his own daughter. The allegations, which turned out to be fabricated, led to the loss of his job, home, personal belongings, and the trust of his family and community.
The ordeal began in 2022 when the man was accused of sexually assaulting his young daughter. According to details shared widely on social media, the true perpetrator was a woman identified as a lesbian who had penetrated the child using her finger. He was arrested and held in custody until December 2025, when a pro bono lawyer intervened, securing his release and reuniting him with his family.
Social media posts detailing the case have gone viral, with users expressing outrage over the irreversible harm caused by such unfounded claims. One post described how the false allegation shattered the man's life in moments, stripping him of his employment, residence, and the confidence of his nearest kin. "Such unfounded accusations inflict damage upon lives in manners that defy complete comprehension," the post noted.
The lawyer's investigation reportedly uncovered evidence, which played a key role in exonerating the man and identifying the actual offender. While the identity of the man and the perpetrator have not been publicly disclosed to protect the child's privacy, the case has sparked discussions about the need for thorough investigations before arrests in sensitive matters like sexual assault allegations.
Advocates for justice reform in Nigeria point to this incident as a stark reminder of systemic issues within the legal system, including rushed judgments and the long-term consequences for the wrongly accused. False allegations, particularly in cases involving children, can lead to irreversible social stigma and economic ruin, even after innocence is proven.
The man's release marks a small victory, but the road to rebuilding his life remains long. Community leaders and human rights groups are calling for better safeguards to prevent similar injustices in the future. |
