Please, for those who booked their medicals via IOM, did you have to make payment at the bank counter at SCB, or an online payment sufficed?

I'm asking because the payment instruction requires me to use my passport number as reference number, which the online transfer does not allow me put in such detail.

Any help here?

Thank you.
You can do a transfer, it doesn't matter if your passport ID doesn't reflect. I had same issue when doing mine and I still passed my medicals

LANDING GIST!

I just landed in Canada few hours ago via Ethopian airlines from Lagos Airport.

I registered on arrive can, switch health, and printed all documents before arriving Lagos airport.
The guy who pushed my trolley attempted to scam me 7500 for yellow card, amongst other scams, but I remembered narrations on nairaland so I didn’t fall for any. I didn’t spend any money during the journey, but you can give tips as the Spirit leads.

After showing my passport, I passed my bags through the machine just near the Lagos airport door. I then went straight to Ethiopian airlines check-in counter admist the crazy queue. Those check-in staff are not smiling, be prepared with your documents make them nor delay you.
My bags didn’t exceed the limit & I suggest you go at least 4-5 hours before the flight just incase.

After about 4 more security checks, I boarded & arrived addis ababa some hours later where I was able to use the free airport wifi to update loved ones. Ethiopian airlines was ok, nothing bad to say. It was a long flight & having to seat for so long in such confined space does a number on the body.

Arrived Toronto Pearson quite early in the morning & I think that plays a role in how relaxed the airport & staff were as I wasn’t subjected to much questioning. Having all documents on hand in paper really helps. Make sure you’re organized & calm, your documents may speak for you & questions were minimal to none in my case. Don’t be afraid to ask polite questions when looking for directions or clarity.

Since I registered with switch health, I was directed to a shorter queue for arrival covid test which was the last stop before finally exiting the airport. I didn’t pay for the test & I wasn’t told anything about quarantine. I am fully vaccinated & wore my mask & sanitized at all times cos I don’t want a positive covid test result. It didn’t really snow much at the time I arrived, however it is cold here.
Congratulations. Your timeline Please

Unfortunately, going by the feedbacks on this thread, a lot of people don't give a damn about it. Most of the applications i sent out without getting a response from recruiters was when I had scanty github contributions.

Thank God for mentors, it changed dramatically. I didn't know there was something called job application package specific to software development roles.

1. Completed github profile with solid contributions (Open source projects inclusive). With links to your email, portfolio, linkedin e.t.c)

2. Professional linkedin profile. Also tailored and well crafted for software development.

3. Resume (Tailored for software development roles).
4. Cover letter (Needless to say it should be tailored to a particular role).
5. I even built a solid Angelist profile.
6. Stackoverflow profile.

"Miraculously", these changed the game for me and saved me from blindly applying to jobs without getting any response. Since then, I've worked at multiple projects and orgs (only US orgs).

Plus my experience, now I get an average of four unsolicited invitatitions from head hunters per month.

The reason for this shalaye is that technical knowledge is not enough. Sadly.
Your submission is true. All these things matter and make one stand out one way or the other.

How you even call git a trend baffles me.

This is not about me, it is just what it is whether you like it or not.

Please tell me again, how would you pick out 20 applicants out of 1000 (without work experience) for an interview? You'll interview all 1000? Or you'll send all 1000 a DSA to complete(as has been mentioned here) and review each?

And I'm not a recruiter.

I'm just wondering, what is the problem people have with committing their codes?

You have no experience, how else do you show someone who doesn't know you and probably thousands of miles away what you can do? Word of mouth?

Plus, almost every team uses git in their everyday activity. This is the tool that you'll most likely be using IF you get hired. Can you even use it? Git and Github is like the most basic tool....

I dont know how else I can emphasize this especially for someone without experience. You have no portfolio and then you have phobia of committing your work so that people can just go there and check you out and reach out to you.

I'm curious what these people send in their job applications. Just resume? We focus too much on the technical aspect of our industry. The professional part is extremely important as well.

Before I learned anything, I learned git first and best practises. Thanks to the advice from mentors ahead of me.

So what is the issue here? No one is saying you should know everything about git. Two commands: "git add" and "git commit" intermittently as you code.

I think people should begin to focus more on being professionally attractive as we are acquiring this so called knowledge.

For emphasis, save yourself the time. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU DON'T SHOW THEM. NOBODY WILL FIND YOU IF YOU DON'T MAKE YOURSELF "FINDABLE". From the day you start writing "Hello World", create a github account and commit everything.
I don't know why I read this screaming. Your points are valid though. It's part of the reason most recruiters ask for your Github link when applying.

TravelRe: Let Me Gist You About My New Job In Canada by Eggovic: 3:14am On Jan 09, 2022
Majesticniyi:
Well, to be honest there are a million and one ways to get to success and advices have to be customized to the particular situation of the seeker. I would just say be very selective of the company you keep when you land, it would determine if you would be successful or not (assuming part of your definition of success is being financially comfortable).

For example, I studied mechanical engineering in Nigeria and when I landed, I took a diploma course called Welding Engineering Technology. It prepared me for being a quality control personnel and I would say it's a very lucrative career for someone who is smart and pays great attention to tiny details. You could end up being in QC, NDT, engineering among other paths.

Someone in the medical line could look into a course like Sonography. Someone in management might look into business analytics. I mean, there are loads of courses out there that are lucrative but require sacrifice to get into. In my case, I basically sacrificed my first two years here (when people we landed together were buying houses and new cars) but I'm reaping the results now. One thing is, if the foundation is faulty here and you look for shortcuts, you would definitely lose out at the end. Take the pain to research a career that has growth paths, sacrifice everything to study it right, get the right certifications....and you'd be on the path to success.

How long person go take dey do low paying jobs? After some years, person go still dey the same level. This obodo oyinbo, you gats wise up. I know it's hard because your mates will be buying new flashy cars on loans and living big while you look like a sufferhead...but the difference will show in five years!

And for those still outside Canada, don't let any agent scam you with and yeye story. Canada is freaking hard to get into and 99.9% of those people don't have what it takes. Even we wey dey here no sabi way in again since Express Entry became another story. Don't have any agent money to drink tea with, jump online and research student routes yourself.

It might take me time to reply any comments on this so please bear with me.
Thanks a lot for this robust response. It's greatly appreciated

Op, if you hear bakery work in Canada...run grin.

I have a million things I really would have liked to type, maybe I'd modify this post later but this one thing I'd say now, don't get sucked into the survival job mentality here. Go back to school please! Research on courses that are viable and key in without wasting time. There are hidden treasure courses that would catapult you to living the good life if you discover them, please do due diligence and find a way to start as soon as possible. Just my two cents sha...and btw, there are other places in Canada asides Ontario (I won't want people to attack me, so I wouldn't go deep with this)
Please I need you to go deep with this so I can learn and others here too.. Please
