40th:
I wanted to start a fresh thread but I stumbled across this one, so lets just continue. Off the record, Firstbank is actually looking for around 200b Naira, and we will reach that goal. This is going to be the biggest share offer ever in Nigeria, not too sure about Africa though,but probably even in West Africa by far. The price hasn't been fixed yet and that will determine the success or otherwise of the offer.

I'm going to upload an application form as soon as I can get my hands on it, so that interested investors can just download and walk into any of our branches or issuing houses and submit after completion. Nairalanders, please buy these shares and watch your stock grow and your investment appreciate in record time. Firstbank's record is second to none in the banking industry, so you can't go wrong with this one.

More info later!!!
well 40th i have few questions, what should those of us who have first bank shares for now do ,cos am sure as they would offer it at discount ,the price of the shares on the exchange floor might go down .
another questions also is this ,what of those that would want their certificates to be credited to their cscs account ,how long would it be for them to be credited wit their shares ,i guess thats what is called E-PO (i might be wrong )
answers to these question would decide if i go for first bank shares or not ,cos i hate to be tied down cos of the delays in receiving the certificates .

Oga admin , if the warning is the type that condemns every nigerian as untrustworthy then thats not contructive type,rather its the type that do more harm than good ,let me quote what you said ;

Absolutely not! In Nigeria, you cannot trust your brother or sister or even the ones that bore you.
If you want to start a business in Nigeria, you must be here to monitor every detail of the business personally.
Otherwise, you will just lose your money. People will 'borrow', take, and steal until you have nothing left.
Well oga admin the people that manage my business in Nigeria are my family members ,now they have not disappointed me yet ,but that does make them angels either ,so they could fail someday ,but what i would like you to know here is that i trust them just as Americans trusted ken bates and put their money in Enron which he ran down to bankruptcy and many of them lost their life savings .

You say the guy must be here to monitor his business for it to succeed ,well does that mean then that those Nigerian citizens who are based at home are all making it in there businesses ? of because the answer is no ,so u see coming to base in Nigeria does not guaranty that he would make or not make it in his business .

My point here is your response and some other people here make it look like nutting work in Nigeria ,and when that comes from a Nigerian himself then one would wonder what an outside would think about us ,if you don't see something good about your country i wonder who else would do that .
BusinessRe: Investing In Nigeria: How Risky? by egoldman(m): 9:49pm On Mar 21, 2007
all this people that say don't invest in Nigeria ,wetin be una own? is this the way to take us to that promise land ?by making sure u discourage anyone that wants to invest back home ,who told you guys that its not risky to invest even in america?go and ask the shareholders of enron and other failed companies and they will tell u how risky it is to invest in the western world too ,instead of constructive advice people would come here and hip shit on their own country ,and tomorrow they say Nigeria go better , am sure Iraq and Somalia is more investor friendly to them angry angry angry

@Josho
I think Transcorp was placed on suspension to prevent its shares from going further southwards. It seems yatchloads of the shares are getting into the market without buyers. The idea of waiting for two or more years before getting any returns on your investment don't seem to go well with most nigerian investors. Besides there are other stocks that can give much more within that time frame. transcorp is suppose to be a long term investment with bias towards capital appreciation. Getting on the train in hope of netting a quick profit in the short term will be a major investment mistake.

@Cleric

You can't get Dangote Sugar and Nascon now. Investors have not received their certificates. even if they do, they are not going to sell until the price notch up to N36-N40. you should look forward to further price appreciation in the weeks ahead.
well when i look at the volume of trades that have been done on the shares of dangote sugars it keeps changing from day to day,does that not mean that they are already trading the shares ? i had asked this question on another thread because i would like to know if dangote investors have already gotten their certificates already as the IPO was just recently concluded ,if there are ways to get round the delays of getting the certificates after buying IPOs ,then i would start singing ipo songs right now .someone should plz throw some light on this .

I think if you are buying with a stockbroker, they can sell your shares without a certificate, they jsut do an exchange probably with your cscs account

not too sure but the whole system is way too slow!
i don't know if thats is very correct as i understand you cant sell shares that u don't possess the certificate yet ,i may be wrong though ,wish someone with better info would help here .

Hello Guys , Some questions , I understand that it takes several months b4 certificates actualy gets to someone that bought shares during the IPOs,i heard it could take even up to a year sometimes .
now here is my question, the IPO of Dangote Sugar closed on dec 22 2006, so here is my question, if the certificates takes several months or even over a year as to be sent to those that buy shares during the IPOs ,how come that dangote sugar shares is being traded on the exchange today which is less than 3 months from the closing date of the their IPOs ? As we know that its not possible to trade your shares until you receive the certificates for them and also submit it for verification, these also take sometime to happen .
Does this mean that those who are trading their shares have already received their certificates already ?could it be that these are those that asked that their certificates be credited to their cscs account, as i understand it might make things faster ? if any of the above questions is true,so it would mean that they got their certificates in less than 3 months .
i ask this cos i am being discouraged from buying shares during the IPOs cos of the delay that comes with the posting of the certificates . would like some stock gurus to give some info about this matter .

CultureRe: Are You Proud To Be A Nigerian? by egoldman(m): 9:03am On Mar 16, 2007
Nigeria has its bad side just like every other country ,so its not that everything is on the roll coaster in Nigeria .
Now having said that ,you want me to tell u what i am proud of as a Nigerian ;

1, am proud because of the recent banking consolidation and what it has achieved .
2, am proud that one of the biggest banks in southafrica standard bank have bought about 51% of IBTC ,they must have seen something that your ever negative mind would never see in your country .
3, am proud that our position on the transparency international rating for bthe most corrupt countries in the world have improved ,yeah we have not become angels yet ,but we have done better than before
4, am proud that for the first time in the country a IG of police was convicted and went to prison,the sentence might be too lenient ,but the fact that he was even touched in the first place is a sign that something no matter small is being done about corruption .
3,am happy that foreigner investors are investing in Nigerian stock market despite the political situation in the country ,its a sign that they still have some confidence in Nigeria after all , confidence which you a Nigerian don't have .
4 several Nigerian banks have won quite some number of international awards ,Microsoft is partnering with a local computer company in Nigeria ,Google have come to Nigeria .
5, Tata group is in Nigeria ,Reliance group lead by one of the top 20 richest man in the world is Nigeria ,Lakshmi mittal is interested in porthacourt refinery .
Nigerian banks are venturing into territory they didn't not dare to go before,UBA just opened is branch in newyork,other banks are also venturing into west African countries and even in southafrica .
with the recent conclusion of the consolidation in the insurance sector ,foreign insurance companies are partnering with nigerian insurance companies .

the above reasons do not in anyway mean that Nigerian problems have all been solved ,but it means that something is being done even if its with slow pace,the fact remains that something is being done .
i could go on and on ,though as i said these does not mean that we still don't have big problems,but if u cannot be proud of all these then i don't know what u would ever be proud of .

Enjoy if u can! a study was recently conducted to determine the average crime rate at international airports around the world. the study made use of an ordinary looking man, standing in the airport terminal reading a newspaper. he had an empty briefcase beside him, which he ignored. observers then recorded how long it took for the briefcase to be snatched. in Brussels, the case was stolen within 4minutes and 20seconds. in Washington DC, the case was stolen within 3minutes and 16seconds. at Heathrow, the case was snatched in less than 2minutes. in Newyork, the case was stolen within 1minute 5seconds. in Los Angeles, it took only 33seconds before it was snatched. At Lagos, the people conducting the study were robbed on their way to the airport.

absolutely.i'm proud to be a native of a country
that ranks 3rd in corruption,
has no major product outside of oil,
where we embrace the darkness(PHCN), provide our own water,
where we die in hospitals bc there are no drugs/equipment.,
where citizens are robbed by policemen,
where dishonesty is celebrated(who r the people we see in ovation?)
where it is almost impossible to get ahead.

if 419 would become our way of getting back to the white man for the colonial injustices then we are all doomed for ever ,i still ask u shine your eyes and see where other countries are going ,419 would never be the best option for us ,it has taken us backwards by thousands of steps while other countries that we were better off few years ago are now becoming darlings of the rest of the world because of their economic progress .
take india ,malaysia,southkorea for example and see why we should be against 419 no matter who is the victim .
