freshdude99: Few days ago I read an article here on NL on how ibos are mere traders and chest beaters while the yolobas are the true entrepreneurs and innovation drivers in Nigeria. What can be more annoying than that bro u start screaming tufiakwa! It's a calculated attempt to undermine our efforts psychologically. So I know exactly what am saying wen I use the word 'zoo' Oh my! Welcome mister. Yours is 'a calculated attempt to undermine their efforts psycologically' too and probably promote tribal self esteem, right? Wrong. You don't quell a fool with foolish words-- because when you do, you've only increased folly! |

But, that UNN man amuses me... 'Engineer at Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry...'. A mention of four quite distinct fields; one man! |

darellrivers: Hello Everyone, I shared this story before the nairaland data saga (hmmm i like the sound of that-- ) and I decided to share it again.
One day, a teacher asked his student “What are you going to do with your life?” The student was stunned for he loved this teacher and admired him. He had never felt such pressure from his teacher before. Stammering, this man replied, “I don’t know. Finish my studies and get a good job, I suppose" “Get a good job,” his teacher repeated. “This is a phrase I have often heard. It is the single worst choice of your generation. Happiness is unlikely to come to the mind whose goal is to ‘get a good job.’” “Son,” this wise teacher asked, “Would you be interested in some specific advice from an old man who wished he had your youth and energy?” “Of course, Doctor.” “Look around you. Take a fresh, hard, and uncompromising look at life as you see it. Ask this question, ‘What needs to be done?’ When you have an answer, and it may take some time to get it, then go and do what needs to be done. Do it better than anyone else does it and the world will beat down your door for your help. Then you will not need ‘a good job’; and you will have more than a career. You will have a mission.”
Many times, we focus on "getting a good job" and then when we get that job, we get disillusioned and want something "better".. Take the advise of this wise teacher (who, by the way, was the famous inventor, Buckminster Fuller) and really, "jobs" will come looking for you! But take heed... we need to all find the balance between AMBITION and CONTENTMENT
Wish everyone the very best... |

charix: I think its a good idea. Don't let it die. Competition is the only way to bring out the best in humans. If a competition of the sort gets implemented you'd get surprised at how fast the government buys the original idea and maybe improve on it. Thanks á million. To be very candid, Mr. Charix, you're much on point! Competition really brings out the best...! Thanks once ágain. |

charix: I think we Nigerians should set up competitions where alternative means of power generation become the focus. We're long past the era of waiting on the government to provide us electricity. The nation is not growing depending on four thousand plus megawatts of electricity only. I've been thinking of this too. Later on, my pace slowed because some have alloted the problem of alternative energy in Nigeria to lack of MASS funding. Really, what else do you think 'bout it? |

dabriggs: We need a mindset revolution. Talkin' about the 'mindset revolution.' I once read on a foreign site that Africa has a lot of 'ORATORS' or, talkers. This reminds me of a time when a man came from the U. S. to give a seminar in my department recently. The theme of the seminar was that we the listeners--i.e. Nigerians-- take opportunities of the natural resources around us. Despite the difference in academic and scientific knowledge between the man and me, believe me, I could almost begin to yawn. ALL he said are not more than what a seasoned Nigerian O' level graduate can give. "I had heard much more than that." What we need are 'DO-ERS'!!! And commenting on Nairaland doesn't do that by the way: If we get this around even 5% of the populace, then do we begin to leave our current status. |

Hello everyone. I'm a second year undergrad student in the Sciences in one of Nigeria's "top" schools. I have an inkling of what 'doing' (by 'doing', I mean 'research in') science is like in some of Nigeria's best institutions: I don't want to do (even) my masters in the country. (I'm looking at anglophone European countries and North America.) I'm from a typical average Nigerian family and to think that my financiers 'd foot schooling overseas is itself a miracle. By the way, I see myself getting through a 1. upon graduation: degree class is not an 'issue.' What seems to be the only hope is getting a scholarship (shortly before/after school by plan/hope). No visa, passport and the likes at the moment.
How do I go about it?
P. S.: I'll need answers as explicit as possible please. (xfire, darellrivers, taiwolusol et al, I've long been waiting for this time.) Thanks in advance. |

morgang: Good day house.
Sometimes in life, there are some mistakes that could remain indelible and consequently, one need to accept faith due to our action(s) naively taken.
I'm a student of a prestigious federal university, who was admitted in 2013/'14 admission season. I was admitted to study political science; which was my long awaited course that I've always wished to study. Although, during my jamb registration saga; the operator made a grave mistake by myopically putting a wrong date of birth with an addition of two years margin (original dob 1995, mistaken dob 1993 ). I was almost half insane when I eventually noticed the mistake after the printout, but alas! "no need to cry over a split milk*, the only way to mop it up (as suggested by some friends), I was told to follow up the uncorrectable mistaken age('93); of which I did. I also registered same age in my pjamb as well. Furthermore, I eventually went ahead to make an affidavit of my waec certificate date of birth from '95-'93 .
Although, according to any university mode of admission registration, it's clearly stated that any incoherent inputs of data will lead to disqualification in the admission processes.
Going by my mistaken age, '93; hopefully, by 2017 I'll be 24yrs old - which is tantamount to my graduation. With a calculative area of observation, my NYSC programme will be ending within the range of 2018-2019, by then I would be 25-26 years of age; which is above some job age requirements . And a lot of opportunities might be denied of me due to this monstrous age margin
Dear NL'ders, I'm being haunted day and night with this indelible grave mistake. Although, I've never wished to work as an employee; but you never can tell what the future holds.
Please, I need your advice and suggestions towards this destructive mistake that has inflicted my age Oh, now I wish I could really help. Hold on, someone should get to you. BTW, opening a thread isn't bad for an issue such as this. All the best. |
