Since there is a place for constructive criticism, I'd be more than pleased to judiciously enlighten you on some of your schools of thought that you hold so loftily.

"...Infact ehn, Dentistry is the only medical field that is independent from other fields controlled by Doctors..."

To begin with, the equivalent of the MB;BS is the MD (Doctor of Medicine) and for BDS is the DDS(Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD(Doctor of Dental Medicine). This apparently means holders of either degrees; MBBS or BDS are Doctors. They are dependent on each other not independent of each other.

Say for example, a Dentist knows the treatment plan for an hypertensive patient, treating a patient for such is crossing his boundaries, that's why you have things called "referrals". The Dental Surgeon refers the Patient to a Physician (Cardiologist) as appropriate.

Same thing if a Patient presents for example with Lichen Planus infection, the Physician obviously knows it's out of his jurisdiction so he refers as appropriate to a Dental Surgeon (Oral Medicine/ Oral Pathology) for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Medicine doesn't look down on Dentistry and vice versa, most times you can't even distinguish between both classes in Medical School until 500L or thereabouts.

"...He never went to strike one day Lai,lai..."
This goes in three ways:
1. You're tripping on his Bullshit. A Dentist/Dental Surgeon is a Doctor, when ARD(Association of Resident Doctors) call for a strike, do they say only "Medical Doctors can go on strike", while exempting Dental Doctors?

How about the last MDCAN's(Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria) strike?

2. He is in private practice. If your Dentist friend practices privately, then, he has no business with any strike. Well, unless the association of Private Dental Practitioners decide they have some unmet needs (that would be an oddity anyways).

3. He is not a Dentist. There a lot of quacks and wannabes. He could be a Dental Nurse or Therapist who is just out to impress you.

"...He said he can as well go to study medicine again here in Nigeria for just 18months whereas MBBS will have to study Dentistry for 3 good years..."
I have not seen an official document stating the above as factual. However that a Physician has to spend 3 years in school to acquire the BDS does not mean Dentistry is tougher than Medicine.

During Preclinical years, while the Medicine guys do Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine or Epidemiology, Dentists do all of that + Oral Biology/ +Dental Anatomy.

At the Clinical Phase, it's much different with lots of courses that the Medicine guys have no need for. Why waste your time learning stuff you have no use for? There's a reason why you don't call a Dental Surgeon (regardless of the Surgeon title) to come deliver a breech baby. He has no business there.

The very same thing applies when a Dentist applies to Medical school, he has done lots of the course work already, he just has to go through things like Obstetrics and Gynaecology etc.

So the 3 years vs 18 months thing is justified, it does not mean Dentistry is superior or that Medicine is cheap.

"...Dentists can be cosmetologists..."
In the purview of Medicine or Dentistry, there's nothing called Cosmetology.

According to Wikipedia, Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatment. Branches of specialty include hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures/pedicures, non-permanent hair removal such as waxing and sugaring, and permanent hair removal processes such as electrology and intense pulsed light.

Plastic Surgery, a more appropriate term, is a broad range of specialties that are aimed at the positive restoration of the human body. The two branches: Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgery.

Reconstructive
1. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
2. Orthopedic Surgery
3. Burns Reconstruction
4. Microvascular Surgery

Cosmetic surgery
1. Cosmetic Dentistry
2. Restorative Dentistry
3. Orthognathic Surgery
4. Aesthetic Surgery (Butt Augmentation, anything that ends with plasty: Phalloplasty, Rhinoplasty etc)

"...People say respect is different that Doctors are more respected but ask yourselves this question, Why does govt owe you salary?..."
Again Dentists are Doctors, Physicians are Doctors, Urologists are Doctors, Psychiatrists are Doctors, Radiologists are Doctors, Dermatologists are Doctors etc. Stop confusing yourself.

For the learned mind, Physicians and Dental Surgeons should be given equal reverence.

"...I haven't even told you of the UK and USA health policy on how doctors are monitored all the time. Later then. Just think am oo..."

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) is the sole accreditation body “responsible for regulating doctors and ensuring good medical practice.”

Perhaps the link below would drive home my point:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/were-investigating-120-doctors-dentists-over-unethical-practice-sanusi-mdcn-registrar/%3famp=1

"...few become surgeons, Radiologists or even oncologists/radiotherapy. You can be a surgeon there but e no easy. So prestige no dey feed bele ooo shey you know..."

I wasn't advising him base on cut off mark, I was advising him base on the competition he would encounter (which is the main thing), he might end up wasting his time and effort..
It's okay shaa, maybe it's just my experience during my admission days that has taken a toll on me....I don't want to sound like a pessimist, I was only being realistic....

Shalom...
You are not a pessimist sir, and I appreciate your realistic opinion. However, I want him to have all the options and make a choice by himself, I don't want him to be encouraged or discouraged.
His score is quite low to be honest. Dentistry competition is still very low, as at last year while over 4000 aspirants for MBBS, less than 400 for Dentistry.
If he can ace post UTME and score nothing less than 320, I feel he should give it a try, but if he can't then he would be wasting his time. His chances are really slim due to his jamb score but if he is really passionate about dentistry he can give it a shot, if he fails he can prepare and be better for next year.
When your chances are slim and none, I will go with slim. Thanks

To be frank with u, the score is too low, and coupled with the fact that they only admit a very limited number of people, It would be too competitive for u...I know someone that had 272 and wasn't given admission (none catchment though)...
My advice: study harder for the post UTME, change ur first choice to any of the basic medical sciences, try to hit at least 4.0 CGPA, then request for change of course to dentistry and dental surgery....
Meanwhile, brace up for next year's jamb and try to hit at least 270...
This is so that u don't put all ur eggs in one basket, as u would be having 2 options at the end of the day......

Wish u the best of luck...
Was 272 his average or his Jamb score, I would appreciate you elucidate more on this.
While his score is very low, I feel if he reach the average cut off mark irrespective of his Jamb score, he would be admitted. Based on the cut off mark of 260 last year... If he can make an average of 260 by scoring up to 320+ in post UTME, he would be in... The challenge is in hitting that high in post UTME.
Unical don't use Jamb score alone but average of both Jamb and post UTME.

Yes I am from the catchment area , so if I can hit 300 in post ume I might get into with catchment area right
Please can you tell me how unical set their post ume questions for dentistry and how hard it is
Thanks
The post UTME is 40 questions, English has about 20 questions, then the remaining questions are shared between physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics... Each question carriers 10 marks...
The questions are like normal Jamb questions though a little bit trickier

Unical merit cut off mark for dentistry was around 260 last year and it is much lower if you are from catchment area or ELDS... If you can hit 320 and above in the post UTME consider yourself in.

SIR IS THERE ANY OTHER USEFUlL INFO i can get from you,

All the 19 Northern states are part of ABU catchment area, as well as ELDS... Her chances are really bright.
Dentistry is beginning to gain awareness in Nigeria, the aspirants are usually low. Everybody wants to study medicine, not knowing that studying dentistry is like studying medicine and specialising at the same time.
Encourage her to study harder for post UTME, I had friends who got last year with 240 average

Check Jamb brochure... Most schools accept 2.2 in any of the basic medical sciences... I don't know about UNN. If they do your chances are pretty high, since Anambra is in UNN catchment area. Just prepare and ace the post DE exam

ABU writes post UTME, which will be in the 4 subjects you wrote in JAMB. English 25 questions while the others 15 questions each making a total of 70 questions.
Quota is 37 - 45.
Taraba being in ABU catchment area, I will say her chances are high. Just prepare harder for post UTME, surpass your jamb score and consider yourself in. Hope this helps

Yes, you will start from 500L after which your dental certificate and licence will be withdrawn from you...
Dentistry is not inferior to medicine, it is a specialty of medicine that has carved its own niche for political reasons. Finish your dentistry, I am sure you will fall in love with it and not even think of switching later.

Career / Re: Can A Dentist Head A Hospital? by ejehijustice(m): 2:14pm On Mar 25, 2020
Mikolion87:

My bro, just like you rightly said, you're not in the medical line, so you shouldn't come here and spew out what you don't know. You think that because a dentist you met was unable to tell you the category of the drug fluconazole, then it's because he studied dentistry. That is exactly what I'm talking about when I said, people should not comment on areas they know nothing about... Unfortunately I cannot cure everybody's ignorance. It's your problem not mine.

First of all, dentists do not just set out into studying "dentistry"... They first of all undergo rigorous medical training. They do Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Pathology , which they write as 3rd MBBS exam, together with students of medicine in their 4th year.

Secondly, a dentist can also pursue a postgraduate degree (Masters) in Pharmacology if he so chooses, and perform ground breaking research in Pharmacology. One of my lecturers in Oral medicine (a field of dentistry), also has a postgraduate in Pharmacology. As a matter of fact, there's a new rule passed across all medical schools in Nigeria, that only MBBS and BDS doctors will now be employable to teach Pharmacology In medical schools (pre-clinicals).

Now, you should bear in mind that, any doctor can forget any area of medicine.. As a matter of fact, when a doctor specializes, he tends to forget the details of other areas not relevant to his field of specialty, but knows more about his own field. It is not an uncommon happening. Doctors have a need to specialize cos a jack of all thread is a master of none. Consider dentists as specialized medical doctors, who start to specialize early enough from undergraduate, studying both Medicine/surg alongside Dentistry/dental surgery.

Coming to performing Surgeries in the theaters, do you think dentists don't perform complex surgeries too in theaters?..Lol. Can you allow someone with little medical training to operate in your mouth to remove tumors and reconstruct the face, or repair broken facial bones, or repair congenital defects like Cleft palate or lip.. Obviously, you don't know much about dental surgeries,so don't even go there. Same way a medical doctor cannot perform dental surgeries, a dentist cannot also perform surgeries in other areas cos it's not his specialty, even though dentists are also trained in almost every specialty of Medicine and Surgery (with only exception of a few areas, like urology, obstetrics/gynaecology, and paediatrics).Even in the medical field, not every area in surgery can be practiced by every doctor, except you're a specialist in that field, e.g, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, opthalmology,ENT etc, because it requires absolute detail which only a specialist in that field knows.

So, as you can see.. There are a lot you don't know about dentistry and the field of medicine at large.. Just like I stated earlier, Dentists can be described as specialized medical doctors cos, they begin specializing early enough from undergraduate, while studying medicine alongside... So,it's in no way inferior to Medicine and surgery, because they are trained in both Medicine and Dentistry. If not, why would they also be called "Doctors" (even without a doctorate degree), and paid same salary with their other medical colleagues? That's cos they are not inferior to them. As a matter of fact, Dentists should be superior based on course load and training.

My advice is that, next time, get your facts straight before commenting about any field you know little or nothing about.
Good afternoon boss... Are you a dentist or a dental student. Please I need to talk to you personally to get some more detailed information about dentistry and to get answers to many questions in my head... Please send your whatsapp number to my mail justiceomodiagbe@gmail.com.

If you're planning of changing school, I suggest University of Uyo.

No post UTME and the highest cut of mark we've seen so far is 305 which was last two years. This was because of high rate of pass among students that year and it was also the same year the lowest number of students (48) were admitted against the usual 80+.

Secondly, that has been the only the merit cut off mark got up to 300; normally, it's always between 280 and 300.

So with your 315, I can say your being admitted is sure.

Moreover, I am currently a medical student there. So if you need more information, feel free to ask.

The case of Goodness is the of sheer religious discrimination perpetuated by intellectual falsehood and clever manipulation to hide the truth. She scored the highest in UTME among the three of them under consideration. In order to ensure that she was edged out the ABU authorities inflated the post-UTME scores of the two Muslim candidates so that they can have a higher average score.

The post-UTME has become a manipulative tool in the hands of our tertiary institutions. The way forward is to scrap it so that true merit can be established.
I agree with you sir... With the way the Jamb is sanitising the system and reducing malpractice to the barest minimum, there is no need for post utme.
Post utme has lost its relevance, it should be scrapped. Jamb is the statutory body backed by law to conduct entrance exams into higher institution.
