Programming / Re: Social Media Is Lying To Beginner Developers. by ekehopp2: 8:52am On Apr 16
Devdevdev:
I created this thread because I've finally arrived at an answer to the question I've been having for the past month. What languages should I focus on to get jobs as a beginner developer.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the answer I've gotten is making me lean a bit in that direction regarding this subject.

For the past 3 years, social media has been pervaded with lies about the technologies that gives a beginner an advantage in the current job market, especially for those who are self taught.

I've done my research and these are the in demand technologies locally and abroad.

For Frontend:

Reactjs (Redux -Nextjs - Gatsby)
Typescript.
For styling: Tailwind

For Backend:
Nodejs,
PHP with laravel framework
Java with Springboot frame work.

On few occasions I see some ASP.net and Ruby on rails, but the highlighted are the ones that always come up.

For Data Bases: Postgresql and MySQL

On freelance sites, the most in demand language is PHP and I see lots of jobs needing wordpress, magento, drupal and shopify knowledge.

But when you go on social media, everyone will tell you to learn basic HTML CSS and JavaScript as if any company would employ anyone that knows just that. Even learning basic react without any added frameworks is not enough for a front end developer.

The worst is those that tell you to learn Python. I almost never see any Jobs for Python, whether it's the Django framework or Flask. Most jobs in python are in Data science and Machine learning, and you have to be a data scientist or advanced mathematician to work in those fields.

The amount of gatekeeping and lies is astounding. Everyone says PHP is dead, yet, one in every three jobs I see requires PHP.
Four in every five freelancer jobs require PHP.

The only reason I'm even learning Python is just to use in it in solving data structures and algorithms and I won't use it beyond that. I don't have time to start learning Java as I'm preoccupied with JavaScript for frontend and backend, along with DSAs and some PHP laravel. In the future I'll pick it up.

Programming isn't saturated, it's just filled with clueless, incompetent people with half-baked skills who haven't done the right research.
Most of the languages/frameworks you listed are already on my ToDo/DOne list.
You spoke the truth!

I would think we're losing our best brains to japa and not them crying about layoffs?

Ok guys, i wish to build a thick skin for software engineering and wish to attend a bootcamp in Nigeria, particularly Abuja or anywhere. Please kindly recommend as its important

Regards

AltSchool (Remote)
ALX Africa (Remote)
Semicolon (In-person)
Decagon (In-person)

The 4 most established ones with pedigree IMHO.

New Horizon (Abuja in person).

So many small scale schools in Abuja. Google, check their website, and visit.

Understand that schooling will basically help you with guidance and networking, the 20%. The 80% still remains you studying yourself and understanding.

Programming / Re: As A frontend Developer, You Need To Learn A CSS Preprocessor. by ekehopp2: 5:30pm On Apr 14
Personally have never bothered. Tailwind CSS has got me. And I hear Vanilla CSS has launched a good number of the features CSS Preprocessors were noted for. Anyways it's easy to pick up when necessary sha.

please help if you know it:

"Let's write a small program that calculates how many years, weeks and days can be formed from the given integer variable days, printing the result on screen as in the following example:

700 days equals 1 years, 47 weeks and 6 days.
Hints!

The remainder operator % is a good way to get the "overflow" when calculating how many days remain after the complete years are removed."
You can easily use ChatGPT or Google Gemini for stuff like this.
Also start doing Leetcode regularly to build your own competency in tackling these sort of DSAs.

OP is right. Some of u are misunderstanding him.

As a juinor as per Naija guy. Push the DSA till later. Learn something then get a job, then continue with DSA latter.

DSA, DSA. The main thing na to sabi code. Most of the thight men no to sabi DSA from my observation. I am just guessing this part.

People will learn and understand DSA better after they get a foot hold in the industry.

Remote guys make una press me small bah na.

No, don't push the DSA till later. Like many senior Developers have mentioned it's key for a strong foundation.
I have been doing 1 DSA challenge per day on LeetCode since Nov 2023 (over 150 problems solved currently).
I recommend same approach for all fellow Junior Developers.
Practice makes perfect!

Randy Waldrum has a good problem, that is, picking 18 players to make the roster for the Olympics game and 4 Alternates.

If you were Randy, who will make your list? The list obviously could change as events unfold, but who will make your list right now?

Mine is below:

Goalkeepers:
1. Chiamaka Nnadozie
2. Tochukwu oluehi

Defenders:
3. Osinachi Ohale
4.Ashleigh Plumptre
5. Blessing Demehin
6 Michelle Alozie
7. Nicole Payne
8. Chidinma Okeke

Midfielders:
9. Deborah Abiodun
10. Halimatu Ayinde
11. Christy Ucheibe
12. Jennifer Echegini
13. Rasheedat Ajibade
14. Toni Payne

Forwards:
15. Omorinsola Babajide
16. Esther Okoronkwo
17. Asisat Oshoala
18. Uchenna Kanu

Alternates
19. Linda Jiwuaku
20. Chinwendu Ihezuo
21. Gift Monday
22. Ifeoma Onumonu

-Nicole Payne is not guaranteed. Dare say won't be there.
-Randy will look to the future and take Linda Jiwuaku ahead of Tochukwu oluehi if its 18 players
-Chinwendu Ihezuo definitely ahead of Omorinsola Babajide from the look of things. Except Christy Ucheibe is take as defender in place of Nicole Payne, and then Omorinsola Babajide as an extra striker.

Go and watch Nigeria vs Jamaica and Portugal games at the 2021 Summer Series in the US, you will see her play..! Both games are still on YouTube

Thanks I just searched both games out

Nigeria and our love for WOWO (We only want Oyibo), why did Salome Zogg and Roosa Ariyo not play for the Falcons again?
Surprised to even see Blessing Demehin was featuring for Randy even before the 2022 U20 WorldCup. Very Nice!

For emphasis I only started to follow Female football religiously starting with WAFCON 2022. But I've been following teh Super Eagles religiously since AFCON 2000

Also watching these highlights can Tochi Oluehi retire. Randy should find another keeper in addition to Jiwuaku as back up to Nnadozie.

Only trans Zambia player I know is Barbra Banda. Any one else?

By the way Barbra Banda like Caster Semenya were born that way, with mixed sexes. They are intersexed, choose to identify with their female side and shouldn't be discriminated against.

Trans people are those born male but want to be female. Yes, having those kinds in female sport is unfair.

I'm Still a newbie in the game, But here are some from my 4 earliest opportunities.
Role: Front End Web Development

-How would you implement Role-Based Access Control on a school website.
-What is the meaning of a 404 error code on a website?
-What is the response from a Fetch API call ?
-Do you know Object oriented programming?
-Are you familiar with design patterns?
-How do you typically debug your code?

@ OP Damidave1124
Tech has changed, the bar has been raised for beginners. So realistically It'll take you about 2 to 3 years of dedicated and consistent study to be skilled enough to start making something reasonable from it.
In the long run though it's well worth it, and you'll never be poor again in your life, as your programming value will continuously increase geometrically.

If you choose to go on the journey, try to have other sources of income so you can successfully see it through.

Remember that Tech is not a "get rich quick scheme", but a "get permanently upper middle class slow scheme".

Make a sacrifices today that will permanently secure your future or continue in mediocrity.
The choice is yours. It's a question of how desperately do you want it.

Programming / Re: How Long Does It Takes To Become A Full Stack Web Devoloper by ekehopp2: 6:38pm On Mar 28
tensazangetsu20:
I will comment as someone who just started learning to code in February.

A full stack developer is someone who builds the front end and back end of web applications.

Front end normal consists of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and one JavaScript Framework(react, angular or Vue).

Back end is enormous. You can use JavaScript on the backend with nodejs but there are other languages like java, PHP, c#, python. The list is endless. You also need to know at least one database for the backend side.

I have been studying at least 10 hours a day since February. I can practically count the number of times I have left home and I just finished the front end track. I try to build as I learn so maybe that's a reason for me being slow. I presently just started the backend track and it should take me another 6 months at least with the language I am learning plus I have a really really big project I want to build. A full stack application with front end and back end.

As for Jobs, omho the work plenty o. I started applying to front end developer jobs and I have already sent out 60+ applications. I have like 6 code tests In my emails. Will use the weekend to tackle them. There's so many jobs out there for developers. There's like a gazillion jobs out there men it's so scary.

I studied marine engineering and my course practically has no jobs. I remember when I graduated like they were no jobs online at all. I had to be sending my CVS to company's emails and praying someone read it.

Op if you wanna learn it, just start.
February 2020 to March 2024. I love how Nairaland provides data to study programmers career growth for the inspiration.
Truly 4 years in Tech is enough for any serious individual to turn his/her life around.

Hey all.
I finally got my first offer smiley

My base salary is 400k and I'd be resuming as a Frontend Developer for a new startup.

Don't give up.

Well done bro. first read this thread like a year ago. A year later I'd say I'm now finally about 80% job ready. Started an internship a month ago, and now actively also applying for jobs, doing interviews etc to further better myself for when I hit that proper first job.
I can now totally relate. You do well!
I've been coding off and on over the years but started being consistent and serious December 2022.
I believe my own testimony is not far off soon again.
Thanks for the inspiration!

Nigeria 0 - 2 Mali
International friendly; 27th March 2024

1) Sad game. Awaziem gifted Mali a goal with a careless pass across the defense.
2) We made too many backward passes and not enough attacking plays.
3) Finidi showed poor man management and made very late changes. (You can be sure some players would be glad to see the last of him).
4) In his defense, though, he had no assistance aside from a goalkeeping coach.
5) And as soon as Lookman came on for Onyedika and we switched from 5 at the back to 4, we became porous and eventually conceded a second goal.
6) Naija, being WOWO (We Only Want Oyibo), Finidi has now given them an excuse to hire a journeyman white coach.
7) Who will enjoy a fat salary yet certainly won't qualify Nigeria for the World Cup (2 points out of 6 so far, & no preparations expected before qualifiers resume).
