It doesn't really matter what GEJ says. Stronger forces than him or even Nigeria are at play here.

Nigerian borders are porous. So he and whoever else can ban whatever they like, smugglers will find a way to bring it in.

The only way to attack this issue is to increase the quality of Nigerian goods and/or decrease the cost. In a nutshell, raise competitiveness of naija-made products.

dk: I might end up doing my youth service spending a year as a lecturer. Believe you me, if CU has better accommodations, faster internet access (as fast as is available in the west), and 24/7 light and Ibadan/Ife/Unilag do not, I'd much rather spend my year at CU.

And I am sure that I am not the only lecturer-type of person who thinks in this way.

So there may be a time when CU attracts better faculty/lecturers than some of the federal universities. And once that happens, then it is likely that the quality students will follow.

Using import bans/high duties to fix the problem of lack of competitiveness is like someone using a band-aid for a machete wound.

The more important thing is to get electricity working so that your products are attractive price-wise and industries can compete.

Not even clear how useful any of this import bans, high import duties will be with the very porous Nigerian borders.

I doubt it is cheaper. Otherwise nobody would be begging Lagos gov't to patronize.

OK, good that you posted that. Agric grew by 5.82%. Given that it was roughly 44% of the economy and the economy grew by 7.4%, a bit of math will tell you that agric contributed to ~34.6% of GDP growth, not the roughly 44% you erroneously suggested.

(As an aside, looks like the NBS estimates oil to be about 15% of the economy, but with flat or negative growth. Actually -.34%.)

Telecoms grew by roughly 35%. Wholesale and retail trade by 11.8%.

It is possible for GDP to rise without commensurate increment in employment. However, all responsible governments specifically engineer growth to occur in sectors that are labour intensive in order to boast employment.

Heh. You are right. However, there is absolutely nothing the Nigerian government can do to fix unemployment unless it fixes electricity first.

The only labor intensive sectors fo the economy I know of are manufacturing and subsistence farming. For somewhat obvious reasons, you don't want to encourage subsistence farming

So unless Nigeria decides to tackle electricity (or alternatively, implement population control) we should expect unemployment rates to continue to rise.

I don't even know if this 4.9% unemployment is from the same source (NBS). I suspect that she is mixing up data sources.

It is just a mistake by the writer of the article. 43.64% I guess is what represent's agric's fraction of GDP. Not what % of the growth it was.

Notice later that the man later states himself that this is GDP, not GDP growth rate:

This is why I asked her where she got her #s from. So much time would have been saved if she'd provided a reference rather than KoboDodging.

Notice also that the guy pretty much offers the same reasoning I do for which high GDP growth != decreasing unemployment.

If you don't support capital punishment, then you should also be beefing with the US and Singapore, imo.

I understand that being poor gives you a disadvantage when it comes to the legal system. The rich everywhere in the world are able to get off more easily than the poor.

But that doesn't mean that say in a hypothetical say Yoruba Republic, I'd be keen on my government spending tons of money on lawyers for poor immigrants. Public defendants cost the public a good chunk of money. Money that could be better spent on other purposes, imo.

Heck, if the poor immigrant's country of origin wants to spend money providing him lawyers, fine. but otherwise, out of his own pocket.

(For poor citizens, I guess things become a bit less clear cut, though.)

If they committed the crime and it can be demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt, whether Saudi, Yankee, Nigeria, China, Singapore, etc, they will die.

Now in a nice country like the US, they'll provide you with a public defendant to represent you, no matter how poor you are. But you'll eventually still die.

That Saudi isn't as kindly and nice as the US to waste enormous amounts of money on this doesn't make them evil in this case, right? Or is everyone entitled to legal representation after committing crimes? Is it immoral or unjust not to provide someone a lawyer? This is not a rhetorical question, I don't know. I haven't thought about it long enough to have an opinion yet. But it doesn't seem obviously wrong to me.

I ask again, if it turns out that these guys had lawyers, would you be fine with the outcome?

So this specific case was a travesty of justice not because they are innocent of the crime they were accused of, but because in some other trials the defendants didn't have lawyers?

OK, let's assume for the sake of argument that these guys didn't have lawyers. Saudi should provide lawyers for them, I suppose? And if the end result had been the same (beheading), you'd have been fine with the outcome?

Before moving to Yale and becoming a bestselling historian, Paul Kennedy grew up on Tyneside in the 50s and 60s. "A world of great noise and much dirt," is how he remembers it, where the chief industry was building ships and his father and uncles were boilermakers in Wallsend. Last year the academic gave a lecture that reminisced a little about those days.

"There was a deep satisfaction about making things," he said. "A deep satisfaction among all of those that had supplied the services, whether it was the local bankers with credit; whether it was the local design firms. When a ship was launched at [Newcastle firm] Swan Hunter all the kids at the local school went to see the thing our fathers had put together and when we looked down from the cross-wired fence, tried to find Uncle Mick, Uncle Jim or your dad, this notion of an integrated, productive community was quite astonishing."

Wandering around Wallsend a couple of weeks ago, I didn't spot any ships being launched, or even built. The giant yard Kennedy mentioned, Swan Hunter, shut a few years back, leaving acres of muddy wasteland that still haven't lured a buyer.

You still find industrial estates, of course, and they look the part: overalled men milling about, passing lorries. Only up close does it become clear that there's not much actual industry going on.

The biggest unit on one estate is a dry cleaner; on another, a warehouse for loft insulation dwarfs all else. At a rare actual manufacturing firm, the director, Tom Clark, takes me out to the edge of the Tyne, centre of the industrial excitement remembered by Kennedy. "Get past us and there's nothing actually being made for miles," he says, and points down the still waterfront.

At his firm, Pearson Engineering, Clark introduces me to a plater called Billy Day. Now 51, he began at the firm at 16. His 23-year-old son William is still out of work, despite applying to dozens of small factories. As the local industry's gone, so too have the apprenticeships and jobs. "No wonder you get young kids hanging out doing whatever," says Day. "We've lost a whole generation."

You can see similar estates and hear similar tales across the country, from the north-west down to the Midlands and the old industrial parts of suburban London. But it's in the north-east, the former home of coal, steel, ships and not a lot else, that you see this unyielding decline at its most concentrated. It's a process I've come to think of as the de-industrial revolution, in which previously productive regions and classes are cast adrift.

It gets little airtime nowadays, but this story cuts across most of the key debates in British economics: from why the wealth gap has widened so dramatically to why the country remains stuck in a slump. The dismal unemployment figures that you saw on Nov 16 – they're part of it, too. And as David Cameron and Vince Cable this month tout their get-behind-British-manufacturing campaign, what they fail to mention is the bag of bones that the sector has become.

Assuming of course that it was demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that they are guilty, then there is nothing really wrong with them being beheaded. Unless you are just against the death penalty in general of course. Or you think that beheading is a bad way to die (in which case, sure, let them have the option of beheading, lethal injection, electrocution, etc.)

(btw, I'm not pro or anti-death penalty, I can see arguments in favor of both and am not sure what the answer is.)

I know the right answer is supposed to be wife. But I've never dated a woman before in my life who I love as much as my mother. Maybe when I get married the answer will be more clear. But right now, very hard to say.
