A Nigerian has been sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Vietnam, state media said on Wednesday. According to AFP, a court in Vietnam, whose drug laws are among the toughest in the world, on Monday handed a 31-year-old Nigerian man, Ejiogu Benjamin Ikechukwu, a death sentence for smuggling 3.4 kilograms of methamphetamines from Qatar to Vietnam. Vietnam takes a hardline on drugs and anyone found guilty of attempting to smuggle more than 100 grams of heroin or cocaine can face the death penalty. Convictions and sentences are revealed only by local media which is strictly under state control in the communist nation. Ejiogu who was arrested at the city’s Tan Son Nhat Airport on June 23, 2012, after arriving from Thailand, with the drugs allegedly found in 19 nylon bags hidden in a battery charger, claimed during interrogation that he had been asked by another man to carry some goods including 16 pistons and the battery charger to Viet Nam, and that he did not know there were drugs inside. Meanwhile, after a two-year hiatus in carrying out capital punishment due to problems of procuring chemicals for lethal injections, Vietnam executed its first prisoner by the method in August. The country currently has more than 586 prisoners on death row, at least 117 of whom meet all the criteria for immediate execution, media reports have said. Although the country does not release statistics on executions, rights group Amnesty International recorded five executions in 2011 and said 23 new death sentences were handed out that year, mainly to drug traffickers. Foreigners frequently fall foul of the nation’s stiff drug laws. In June last year, a Thai design student was handed a death penalty for trafficking three kilos of methamphetamine, while in October, a 61-year-old Filipina received the death penalty for smuggling five kilograms of methamphetamines. ![]()

I was listening to a radio station yesterday, when a guy called the OAP on air to plead with him to help him call his girlfriend and break up with her on his behalf. While this is hilarious, it brings up a real question; Is there ever a proper way to end a relationship? So, you have searched your soul hopefully and decided that this person and this relationship are not working out for you. You have decided to move on. To continue would be cruel to both of you, nobody wants to find out later that someone did not want to be with him or her, but was afraid to say goodbye. Your next step is to take a deep breath and follow a plan that allows both of you to exit with dignity and hopefully some closure. As you make your plan on when, how and where to say goodbye, be conscious of the fact that at one time there was something you thought was great about this person. If that does not work for you, ask yourself how you would want to be treated if your girlfriend were saying goodbye to you. This cannot be stressed enough ”BREAK UP IN PERSON‘.’ IM, BBM, email, a social network like twitter or any other modern technology is unacceptable. Have the courtesy to say goodbye face to face in a place where you will have each others undivided attention and do not turn it into a shouting match. Be honest as to why you are leaving, but don’t be cruel and recite everything this person ever did to get on your nerves, but do give the main reasons. Listing the faults of your soon-to-be ex will only add insult to injury and more than likely lead to a shouting match. Don’t say ”I just need a break,” “It’s not you – it’s me.” when you know very well you are not coming back. Phrases like these will only create false hope for the other person who will then be kept waiting for your return. If you do not want to be friends with your former mate, then do not lead him or her to believe you will be. On the flip side, if you are the one wanting to remain friends, remember that your ex may not be able to return the sentiment and you need to respect this person’s choice. Now that you have made it clear that the relationship is over, take into consideration that while you have known you are leaving, this is fresh information to the guy or girl sitting opposite you. Your now ex may be wondering if he or she heard you right. Give this person some time to digest the information and to ask questions within reason. Again, remember that you do not want this to turn into a shouting match. After some weeks have passed, your mind might drift to your ex because you’re feeling lonely and bored, or worse, you might have been drinking. You may then convince yourself that you should call. Pause! Count to one hundred, think about why you are really calling and remind yourself that the reasons or issues that caused you to leave still exist. Most of all, remember the heartache you caused by your earlier declaration. Unless you can say, “I was wrong … I want you back ” then you must leave that person alone to heal and move forward with his or her life. Saying goodbye is never easy, but hopefully the above will prove to be helpful if you are ever faced with the task. Also doesn’t matter who asked for a break up, you should give yourself time before jumping into another relationship. Hang out with friends, read some good books or get to that list of to-do that you have been putting off. Being alone does not mean being lonely and a little time spent just on yourself will give you a clearer view of the new person you want to have in your sights. |
N:B: The pamphlet being distributed in some mosques in the northern part of the country is above. Read below press release from federal ministry of finance on the truth about government position on ASUU strike. The problem is not with Federal ministry of finance neither is Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the issue Contrary to some recent media reports, the Federal government has not adopted a take-it-or-leave-it approach in its negotiations with ASUU. Rather, the approach is focused on positive engagement and achieving sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country. That is why President Goodluck Jonathan recently appealed to ASUU to respond to government’s positive steps by calling off its strike in the interest of suffering students and parents. Despite this, for several days now, some elements in ASUU have been distributing pamphlets and flyers with abusive and inflammatory messages against the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in mosques and other places. This is taking academic unionism to a new low and infusing it with unnecessary politics. I am sure majority of ASUU members are not in support of this. These messages are directed at using falsehood to demonize the Minister as callous and unsympathetic to the plight of students and parents. The major lie being peddled in the pamphlets and flyers is that Dr Okonjo-Iweala has insisted on a “take-it-or-leave-it approach” in the negotiations with ASUU. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is the daughter of two retired professors and her father is presently a member of ASUU’s Board of Trustees and has been one for a long time. She speaks with her father everyday on the issue so how can be insensitive to issues concerning the sad state of tertiary education in the country? She understands and sympathizes with the plight of both students and lecturers. She wants our children back in school as soon as possible. Remember she is a mother and two of her young relatives are sitting at home due to the strike. This is why government is working hard, under the leadership of the President, to seek practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in Nigeria. The President has made available N100 billion a year in the first instance to repair hostels, laboratories and classrooms and other facilities. An offer has also been made to ASUU of N30 billion towards their earned allowances. In fact, negotiations have even gone further than this. This is the first time, in years of negotiating with government, that significant sums of money have been put on the table for ASUU and universities on this particular set of issues. The Coordinating Minister is fully part of this. Against this background, ASUU elements who want the strike to continue should have a heart and rethink their current take-it-or-leave-it approach to negotiation. Government has demonstrated its commitment to improving the university system. And it is even ready to do much more going forward. ASUU should listen to the voice of reason and the yearnings of Nigerians on this issue. Paul C Nwabuikwu Special Adviser to the Coordinating Minister and Minister of Finance |

Obese Man, Fat Passenger Forced To Pay For Double Airline Tickets An overweight manidentified asLes Pricewho hails from the South Wales was recently forcedto pay for two plane ticketsin order to board a plane. To his surprise, the 43-year-old man was shocked when the airline gave him 2 seats in different rows. Les Price got a rude shock when an airline (name withheld) ordered him to by an extra ticket because he weighed more than two stones. ‘When I got to the airport I had to explain to all the staff why I had two tickets,’ he said. ‘They didn’t have a clue. When I finally got on the plane one was an aisle seat and the other was by the window – in a three-seat row. ‘On the way back from Ireland one seat was in row 17 and the other in row 19.’ The slightly over-weighed man claims he is currently working tirelessly to shed off the excess pound causing him discomfort. Les Price has registered with an NHS weight management clinic to help him get rid of the excess weight. He currently weights 37 stones an equivalent of 518 pounds.

A fierce gunfight launched against the fundamentalist Islamist group, Boko Haram, by Camerounian soldiers has led to the killing of no fewer than 180 insurgents and two gendarmes around a Nigerian border with Cameroun. It was gathered that during the battle which took place on Tuesday evening, many of the wounded insurgents were also arrested. About 200 rifles, 70 machine guns and heavy military hardware were said to have been recovered from the insurgents by the soldiers. A reliable military source confirmed the development to our correspondent shortly after the the Nigerian Army in Kano State disclosed that it had foiled a plot to bomb Kano during the forthcoming Sallah festival by uncovering a bomb factory in Gezawa Local Government Area. It was gathered that the Camerounian authorities directed the soldiers to launch the attack against the Nigerian gunmen, who had earlier on Tuesday, ambushed and killed two gendarmes on patrol in the border community. Our source said the soldiers, while pursuing the insurgents, sent a signal to their Nigerian counterparts, to be on the alert to avoid the escape of the fleeing insurgents. According to the source, the number of those killed, the arrests and the recovered arms indicated that many Boko Haram members, who were forced out of Nigeria through military operations, had already “settled comfortably” in Cameroun. He said, “The Camerounian troops have been involved in a serious confrontation with the insurgents. They have killed over 180 of them. “Almost 200 rifles and 70 machine guns were recovered from them by Camerounian soldiers. “What led to this operation was that the insurgents killed two gendarmes on patrol around the border with Nigeria on Tuesday. I think this angered them to order a comprehensive raid of the hideouts of the insurgents. “You can see from the casualty figure and the level of seizures that they were already comfortable in that part of Cameroun until this incident. “Ironically, the Camerounians who had been reluctant in spite of complaints by Nigeria at the diplomatic level are the ones now reaching out to us to ensure that the fleeing insurgents are not allowed to escape. So, I can tell you that the heat is on them.” It was also gathered that Nigerien soldiers in the Multinational Joint Task Force killed an unspecified number of Boko Haram members on some island communities near Lake Chad on Sunday. Investigations revealed that the Nigerien component of the MNJTF went after the insurgents on learning of the killing of one of them. Our source said the intensified military action against the insurgents had made the nation’s northern border rather too hot for them. When our correspondent contacted the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen Chris Olukolade, he said, “Our neighbouring countries, either through the instrumentality of the Multi National Joint Task Force or through their security instruments, are involved in operations to complement what we are doing against terrorism. “I am aware that the MNJTF and Nigerian security agencies are combing everywhere for any strange movement in our territory,” Olukolade said. Also in Abuja on Wednesday, the Commander ‘3’ Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen Illiyasu Abba, said that operatives raided a house in Gunduwawa, Gezawa LGA and discovered a bomb factory. He told journalists at a press briefing in Kano that bomb making items recovered from the factory were meant to carry out attacks in Kano during the Sallah and other festivals this year. A young man suspected to be a child of the owner of the house rented out to the suspected terrorists was shot dead. Abba said, “At about 2 am on October 8, a combined team of the JTF troops and Department of State Services raided two Boko Haram terrorists’ hideouts at Gunduwawa village in the Gezawa Local Government Area. “The raid, which was conducted following a lead on intelligence reports, made no arrests as the terrorists fled the village on the approach of the JTF troops and DSS personnel. “The weapons and other dangerous materials were meant to wreak havoc on Kano during the Eid-el-Kabir and other festivities before the end of the year.’’ He listed Improvised Explosive Devices, ‘two AK 58 with 193 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, one AK 47 magazine with 107 rounds of 5.56 millimeter ammunition, bows and arrows as some of the recovered items. Three primed cylinders of IEDs, one primed explosive suicide back pack, 18 empty IED cylinders, 24 detonators, a small bag of fertiliser, IED timers cortex wires, three remote control devices, five Motorola hand held radios, four communicators, six alarm clocks, two cartons of nine -volt batteries, a scale, one external hard drive and one heavy duty charger/battery were also recovered from the house.
