Abdulsamad Rabiu Richer Than Aliko Dangote – Africa’s Richest Billionaire Emerges Highly celebrated Nigerian businessman, Alhaji Aliko Dangoteis about to lose his position to another wealthy Nigerian business tycoon. The man in question is Abdulsamad Rabiu, a 53-year-old Nigerian businessman who followed his dad’s footsteps by venturing into importing business. Rabiu started importing commodities like rice, Sugar and cement, etc in the early 80s and today he is the founder of BUA Group, a company that makes $1.9 billion yearly in revenues. BUA also specializes in Sugar refinery, flour mills production and vegetable oil processing. Rabiu’s company also operates the BUA Cement I, a 200-meter long vessel designed for heavy loads. It is Nigeria’s first floating terminal. He is already touted to unseat Aliko Dangote, the current Africa’s richest man. According to a recent report by Forbes Africa, Rabiu has assets and business interests that is about to make him Africa’s richest man. In addition to his assets in the BUA Group, Rabiu owns property in Britain, worth $62 million, and in South Africa, worth $19 million. Among his properties is a house in Gloucester Square in London worth nearly $16 million and a penthouse at The One & Only Hotel, in Cape Town, worth $12.6 million. Rabiu’s taste for good living is plain to see; he has bought homes from Eaton Square to Avenue Road, also known as Millionaires’ Row. Rabiu jets around the world on an eight-seater Gulfstream G550 worth $44.9 million, powered by a Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan engine, as well as an $18-million Legacy 600 aircraft.“ Hmmm it’s time for Aliko Dangoteto sit tight because Abdulsamad Rabiuis about to overtake him. Believe it or not many silent billionaires still exist in Nigeria today. It’s a land flowing with milk and honey for people who have the strength to start small.

Open Letter To All Nigerians: “Hausa, Igbo & Yoruba, Let’s Unite As One” Dear fellow Nigerians, How are you all doing? I know all is not well but i believe things will change for good in the nearest future. I would like to use this medium to point out a certain fact to all of us. Did you know that When a Nigerian National team scores a goal……Nigerians of all ethnicity and religion will jump up in jubilation and be screaming one word, one language in one voice”GOOAALLL!!!”. That moment, we forget our ethnic & tribalistic sentiments wether it was scored byan Hausa, an Igbo or a Yoruba man. We love the feelings, we cherish the moments, we adore the players and we sing with one voice…..”Up Super Eagles, Up Flying Eagles, Up Golden Eaglets and Up Green Eagles”. When we talk about those games….we talk about “Nigeria” with one voice. We always wish Nigeria the best and support Nigeria with our great man power to go all out for the”Glory”, for the interest of “One Nigeria”. Nigeria can work, Nigeria can be a better place, Nigeria can move forward if the Hausa man can support the Yoruba man in government, if the Yoruba man let go of every ethnic sentiments and support the administration of the Igbo government. Look at the Golden Eaglets…the Hausa man [YAHAYA] passes the ball to the Igbo man [IHEANACHO] & the Igbo man tries and dribbles his way out of the huddles just to set up the Yoruba man [AWONIYI] to score the goal. That one goal that was fought for by the collective responsibility, hard work and contributions of all the ethnic Nationality for one common goal [interest] that will benefit, elevate and sky rocket this One Nation to a greater height and achievement (s). We should learn from this… we are one Nigeria, and that one greater Nigeria will only be possible if we eschew this our habit of ethnic sentiments and religious bias. UP GOLDEN EAGLETS, UP UP UPPER#NIGERIA |

A brutal gang rape of a 16-year-old girl was first reported in Kenya three weeks ago. But the online petition calling for justice has gained over a million signatures from around the world only in recent days. How did it suddenly get international attention? The story could hardly be more horrific. A teenage girl, walking home from a funeral in western Kenya, was attacked and repeatedly raped by six men. They threw her unconscious body into a latrine. Her spine was broken, and the girl - referred to simply as Liz to protect her identity - is now in a wheelchair. Earlier this year, a similarly horrific gang rape in India sparked a worldwide frenzy in social media and brought international condemnation. Liz's case was first reported by Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper on 7 October. "This is one of many such cases that happen in rural areas and the slums," says Njeri Rugene, the journalist who broke the story. "People keep quiet about it - but it's rampant." The men who allegedly attacked Liz - three of whom she says she knows - were told to cut grass, then set free. The lack of punishment spurred a handful of journalists and activists to use social media to raise awareness of the case. The hashtags created did not get widespread traction, with #Justice4Liz getting just a couple of hundred tweets. But in recent days, an online petition set up by activist Nebila Abdulmelik started to gain international attention. Two weeks ago it had just 1,600 signatures. But by Monday, it had more than one million names from all around the world. Why the sudden spike? One reason was that Avaaz, the site hosting the petition, promoted it to all members. "I saw Nebila's tweet about it, it grabbed me and we developed it," says Avaaz campaign director Sam Barratt. The site worked with Nebila to choose the wording for the petition page, and then emailed its members, helping it stand out from about 5,000 petitions which are created each week. "With this campaign, who could not care?" says Barratt. "Not only was the attack horrendous, but the lack of justice was clear. I think people look to see parallels of change elsewhere [such as the Indian case]. There is a real power in echoes." |

The President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has been named the most powerful man in Africa and 64th in the world by the Forbes magazine. Dangote, who Forbes says is by far Africa’s richest man with a net worth of $16.1bn as of March 2013, was ranked ahead of the likes of Fifa President, Sepp Blatter (69); Speaker, United States House of Representatives, John Boehner (66); and Founder, Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Mohammed Ibrahim (71). The 56-year-old, Dangote, whose company is considered one of the most diversified on the list, is currently ranked 43 on the Forbes list of the world’s billionaires with his net worth over time said to be on the rise. In August, the industrialist had announced plans by the Dangote Group to build a $9bn refinery and petrochemical complex in Nigeria, a move which is expected to help the group further diversify its current business model and increase his net worth. Away from his business interests, mention was also made of his philanthropic efforts in his profile on the Forbes website. It reads in part, “Inspired by fellow billionaires, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, Dangote is making a name for himself on the philanthropic circuit and has given away millions to education, health and social causes in Africa.” Apart from Dangote, Ibrahim is the only other African on the list, which contains 72 people. Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, topped the list, displacing United States President, Barrack Obama, who dropped to the second spot for the first time in three years. Chinese President, Xi Jinping, occupies the third spot, while the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, debuts on the list at number four. Pope Francis, who was elected in March this year, leads 12 other new entrants. Other notable new names on the list are Samsung Chairman, Lee Kun-Hee (41); Volkswagen’s Martin Winterkorn (49); South Korean President, Park Geun-hye (52); and Janet Yellen (72), who has been nominated by President Obama as the next leader of the US Federal Reserves. The Executive Editor of the New York Times, Jill Abramson (68), makes a return appearance after dropping off the list in years past. Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, aged 29, and North Korean leader, Kim Jung-un, aged 30, are the youngest people on the list. Zuckerberg occupies the 24th place, while Kim is ranked 46th. Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, who occupies the eight spot, is the oldest person on the list. He is 89 years old. The world’s richest man, Carlos Slim, is, however, not the most powerful man. The América Móvil honorary chairman occupies the 12th position. According to Forbes, the Most Powerful People in the World list is an annual snapshot of the heads of state, financiers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs, who truly rule the world. “It represents the collective wisdom of top Forbes editors, who consider hundreds of nominees before ranking the planet’s top 72 power-brokers – one for every 100 million people on earth – based on their scope of influence and their financial resources relative to their peers,” the magazine explained. This year’s list features 17 heads of state, who run nations with a combined Gross Domestic Product of some $48tn. |

The embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, has been linked to another car purchase scandal. This time, Oduah is said to have also approved the procurement of two Lexus Limousine cars and two Toyota Prado jeeps. The minister is expected to appear before the House Committee on Aviation which is investigating the purchase of two BMW bulletproof cars for her by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority at N255m. But during the sitting by the Senate Committee on Aviation which is probing the crisis in the Aviation industry, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria , Mr. George Uriesi, said the Lexus Limousine cars and Toyota Prado jeeps were in the custody of a bank. Uriesi, who said the limousines were bought for N60m each , added that he did not have details of the cost of the Prado jeeps. He explained that the bank whose name he did not give, funded the purchase of the four vehicles. The FAAN chief told the six-member committee that while Oduah gave the approval, somebody whose name he failed to mention, signed on his (Uriesi) behalf. An obviously enraged Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Mr. Hope Uzodinma, lambasted him for receiving approval from the minister instead of the Federal Executive Council. He was therefore ordered to appear again before the committee on Monday with details of the transactions. Uriesi, who was said to have sweated in the air-conditioned room while the session lasted, was also asked to bring along with him, details of other vehicles bought for the agency’s directors. The Senate panel also resolved to inspect the N255m bulletproof cars parked at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Meanwhile, members of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation are set to quiz Oduah on Wednesday(today) over the controversial bulletproof cars. The minister, who was summoned by the committee to appear before it on Tuesday, had written , explaining that she had travelled to Israel to sign the Bilateral Air Service Agreement between Nigeria and Israel. On Monday, the committee headed by Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, said Oduah would now appear on Wednesday and not Tuesday as ealier scheduled. It claimed that the decision was to give all stakeholders the opportunity to prepare their documents. But the committee warned that it would not hesitate to take necessary actions against Oduah if she failed to turn up today (Wednesday). As of 10pm on Tuesday, it was unclear if Oduah, who was on Monday accused by the House Committee on Public Procurement of shunning similar invitations 12 times, had returned from Israel. As part of its preparations for the hearing, a five-member sub-committee of the Onyejeocha-led Aviation panel on Tuesday discreetly inspected the controversial bulletproof cars at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. A source privy to the visit, informed us that the aim was to “truly establish that the cars were bought.” The source added, “This is an investigation and you do not leave anything to chance. “The idea of the inspection team was to go to the location and physically see the cars. “All these will form part of the final report to the House.” When contacted, Onyejeocha confirmed that a team visited the airport to inspect the cars. She, however, parried questions on the details of what the team saw. The committee chairman said, “Yes, it is true that we set up a committee to go and inspect the cars. “The committee went to the airport but they have not reported back to us. “If you are interested, come to the hearing tomorrow, please, A senior official of the NCAA, who accompanied the sub-committee to the airport said the lawmakers “saw the two bulletproof cars .” The source added, “They were satisfied. Some of them even stated that people were beginning to insinuate that there were no cars. So, I think people can now ask the House members whether there are cars or not.” Asked if the committee members were also shown the limousines parked at the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria site at the airport, the official said, “I don’t like joining issues, because people are beginning to write what they like. “The cars we are talking about here are the bulletproof cars and not limousines.” The House spokesman, Zakari Mohammed, said sanctions that could be imposed on Oduah if she failed to appear before the Aviation committee included issuing a bench warrant to facilitate her arrest. He said, “What the committee will do is to apply to the Speaker (Mr. Aminu Tambuwal) for a bench warrant to be issued for her arrest. “Once that is done and the speaker approves it, the Inspector-General of Police will be directed to arrest her and bring her before the committee.” PUNCH NEWS |
Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday met with the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Abuja. It could not be ascertained if the meeting which lasted barely one hour produced desirable results. The ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge and the minister refused to speak with journalists after the meeting. Fagge did not respond to questions on the outcome of the meeting and the next line of action of the union. He simply told one of our correspondents that, “I am not in a position to talk.” At the meeting were the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole and a few national officers of the union. Also, Vice-President Namadi Sambo on Tuesday met briefly with stakeholders in the nation’s education sector. The stakeholders were led to the meeting which was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja by Wike. Other members of the delegation included Okojie and Adewole. At the end of the brief session, none of the participants agreed to speak with journalists when approached. Other members of the team who came out of the venue of the meeting a few minutes before Wike came out had claimed that the minister would address journalists. But Wike refused to answer questions when he emerged from the Vice President’s office. He joined other members of the team in a brief consultation at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa before he hurriedly jumped into his waiting car. No official statement was also issued by the Vice President’s office on the meeting. Meanwhile, the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Cultural group, the Afenifere has appealed to both the Federal Government and the striking members of ASUU to shift grounds in the interest of the future of the students and education sector in general. This was contained in a communique issued by the group and read to journalists by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, after the meeting of the group, on Tuesday in Akure. It expressed worries that both parties had failed to shift grounds on the industrial action which had been on since July 1. The meeting, which was held at the residence of the Afenifere Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, also noted that the development was not healthy for the nation’s educational sector. In a related development, the National Association of Kwara State Students has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to take a pivotal role by personally being involved in the negotiation to resolve the strike. In a statement signed by its President, Ajadi Muhideen and Public Relations Officer, Sulyman Alimi, on Tuesday in Ilorin, NAKSS said such act by Jonathan would further show his commitment to education growth and advancement. It hoped that the direct involvement of Jonathan in the negotiation would enhance the quicker resolution of the crisis. According to the association, Nigerian students are tired of suffering inadequate provision of infrastructure as well as lack of motivation for their lecturers and insufficient funding. It stated that there was inadequate lecture rooms in many tertiary institutions, adding that under-furnished lecture halls, poorly equipped or lack of laboratories were some of the challenges facing the nation’s institutions. NAKSS urged other labour unions in the country to embark on solidarity strike. It said, “The Nigerian students are intellectuals and can see where the wrong is coming from. We do not need anybody to sponsor us, the ills are there for all to see. “It does not go with reason why any Nigerian student will say a demand for 26 per cent budgetary allocation or the duly earned allowances of university lecturers being requested for is unrealistic.” |
Hours after the rumour of his death circulated the web, the former Vice President of Nigeria has passed on. Retired Admiral Mike Akhigbe is dead. As his family members were busy sending out press releases yesterday to debunk his death rumour, we learnt that the former Chief of staff passed away at exactly 1:07pm on Monday in the United States of America. Mike Okhai Akhigbe died at a private hospital in Manhattan, New York yesterday. Before breathing his last breath, we learnt he was surrounded by his wife and children. The family had an intimate discussion with him after which he passed on. According to a top secret source, Mike Akhigbe’s death was caused by throat cancer. He was first diagnosed in 2010 while campaigning for President Jonathan. He took an emergency leave after the grim diagnosis. He then travelled to Germany where he underwent aggressive cancer treatment for complete 2 years. He was later transferred to the United Kingdom last year where he stayed until this year. His last treatment stop was at the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Hospital in Manhattan, New York where he lost the battle to the disease yesterday. Sloane Kettering is one of the best cancer treatment centers in the world. Mike Akhigbe’s death has been confirmed by the Nigerian consulate in New York. Plans to convey his body back to Nigeria for a befitting burial is currently ongoing. Late Mike Akhigbe retired from the Military in 1999 when Obasanjo became Nigeria’s President. The Edo-born naval officer died at age 67. May his soul rest in perfect peace and may God grant his family members the fortitude to bear his loss.
