VENTURES AFRICA – Chinese consortium HTG-Pacific Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Government for the exploitation and mining of the Ezinmo Coal Bricks in the country’s coal-rich eastern state of Enugu. Nigerian authorities say the MoU will be followed by a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that would authorise the investors to build a 1000 megawatts coal power generating plant. Nigeria, richly endowed with vast natural resources, is exploring diverse means of power generation to solve country’s gross power supply deficits. The country last year privatised its state-owned hydropower and gas-fired power plants, to leverage on the business expertise of private investors to boost the productiveness of the plants. Nigeria has also opened its arms to investors interested in exploring other forms of energy generation, with recent deals for a 50 megawatt solar station struck. The coal deal with HTG-Pacific is seen as a means of utilizing the abundant coal reserves which the Nigerian government says is capable of generating up to 30 percent of the country’s energy needs environmental-friendly clean technology. Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo, who represented the President at the signing of the MoU with the Chinese consortium said the plant would complement other public and private driven electricity projects as well as improve the power supply of the host state and the eastern region as a whole. www.ventures-africa.com/2014/09/chinese-consortium-to-build-1000mw-coal-power-plant-in-nigeria/ |

A Nigerian medical personel suggested something like that during the early days of ebola in nigeria but was largely ignore by our health officials while we were busy begging for zmap. Since both Ebola and HIV are RNA viruses chances are one of the numerous HIV drugs could have some impact on the virus. |
STORY HIGHLIGHTS Dr. Gobee Logan tried using lamivudine against Ebola out of sheer desperation Only two out of 15 patients taking it died -- far lower than the average death rate Logan read about the medication and similarities between Ebola and HIV in a medical journal (CNN) -- A doctor in rural Liberia inundated with Ebola patients says he's had good results with a treatment he tried out of sheer desperation: an HIV drug. Dr. Gobee Logan has given the drug, lamivudine, to 15 Ebola patients, and all but two survived. That's a 7% mortality rate. Across West Africa, the virus has killed 70% of its victims. Outside Logan's Ebola center in Tubmanburg, four of his recovering patients walk the grounds, always staying inside the fence that separates the Ebola patients from everyone else. "My stomach was hurting; I was feeling weak; I was vomiting," Elizabeth Kundu, 23, says of her bout with the virus. "They gave me medicine, and I'm feeling fine. We take it, and we can eat -- we're feeling fine in our bodies." Kundu and the other 12 patients who took the lamivudine and survived, received the drug in the first five days or so of their illness. The two patients who died received it between days five and eight. "I'm sure that when [patients] present early, this medicine can help," Logan said. "I've proven it right in my center." Two doctors for 85,000 people Logan is mindful that lamivudine can cause liver and other problems, but he says it's worth the risk since Ebola is so deadly. He also knows American researchers will say only a real study can prove effectiveness. That would involve taking a much larger patient population and giving half of them lamivudine and the other half a placebo. "Our people are dying and you're taking about studies?" he said. "It's a matter of doing all that I can do as a doctor to save some people's lives." Logan said he got the idea to try lamivudine when he read in scientific journals that HIV and Ebola replicate inside the body in much the same way. "Ebola is a brainchild of HIV," he said. "It's a destructive strain of HIV." At first he tried an HIV drug called acyclovir, but it didn't seem to be effective. Then he tried lamivudine on a healthcare worker who'd become ill, and within a day or two he showed signs of improvement and survived. One woman walked in, and the Ebola nightmare began Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says that theoretically, Logan's approach has some merit. Lamivudine is a nucleocide analog, and other drugs in this class are being studied to treat Ebola. Fauci asked CNN to give Logan his email address, saying perhaps his lab could do some follow up work. Logan says he plans to email Fauci this weekend. edition.cnn.com/2014/09/27/health/ebola-hiv-drug/index.html |
Social and economic development has long been touted as the way to revive the fortunes of Nigeria’s impoverished north and prevent legions of disaffected young men turning to radical Islam. But Boko Haram violence has scuppered progress, particularly from one potentially lucrative source of revenue — the oil found under the Lake Chad Basin in the country’s far northeast. Nigeria struck black gold in the Kukawa area of Borno state in 2012, with estimates that 100 billion cubic metres of deposits lie beneath the lake and its arid hinterland. The discovery raised hopes not just because of its potential to transform the region economically but to also help boost Nigeria’s oil reserves by three billion barrels to 40 billion barrels. But the former head of the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu, said in March that plans to start production had been put on hold because of the conflict. Geologists, engineers and other technical staff quit while the country’s main oil unions warned workers to stay away, putting paid to extraction and further exploration. “We have advised our members to avoid the northeast because we don’t want them to be killed by the lawless group,” said Babatunde Oke of the white-collar oil workers union PENGASSAN. A senior NNPC official said efforts were ongoing to make the region safe for oil workers, against a backdrop of militant gains of towns and villages across the states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa. “For now, the plan is on hold because of the Boko Haram unrest,” he told AFP. “But the GMD (group managing director) Joseph Dawha is in talks with (the) Nigeria airforce to ensure safe exploration in the Chad Basin.” - No blood and oil - Five years of relentless violence in northeast Nigeria has claimed thousands of lives and made hundreds of thousands of others homeless. The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, now the Muslim emir of Kano, said this month that investment in the north was key to preventing radicalisation. For Mustapha Ibrahim, a political scientist at Yobe State University, oil in particular could help reduce poverty, unemployment and lack of education which fuel radical recruitment. “We need to address this social malaise to effectively tackle Boko Haram and this can be achieved with the judicious use of money from oil in the Chad Basin when oil production finally starts,” he said. “The oil money will facilitate job and employment generation, mass education opportunities and other social and economic programmes which will in the long run do away with the factors responsible for the Boko Haram violence raging now.” Boko Haram wants to carve out a hardline Islamic state in Nigeria but there have been no serious suggestions that its insurgency is driven by oil. “There is no evidence that Boko Haram or their associates are motivated by a desire for control of oil,” said Andrew Noakes, coordinator of the Nigeria Security Network of analysts. “The insurgency is driven primarily by ideological, religious, and socio-economic grievances rather than pursuit of financial gain.” - Avoid the resource curse - Nevertheless, in the maelstrom of rumours that is Nigerian politics, there have been claims that some northern leaders have been fuelling the rebellion for personal economic gain. One theory is that no oil extraction can be carried out as long as there is instability in Nigeria’s northeast, giving neighbouring Chad free rein to pump out crude from the shared basins in the region from its side of the border. If and when the conflict ends, analysts say it will be vital to learn from the mistakes made in the Niger Delta region, where most of the country’s oil is currently produced. The Delta has been wracked by violence while decades of corruption and mismanagement have done little to improve the lives of ordinary people, despite the billions the industry produces. “Everything must be done to avoid the resource curse,” said Debo Adeniran, from the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, a pressure group. “Oil should be a blessing rather than a curse.” Only good governance and accountability will bring the insurgency to an end, according to Ibrahim, warning that the stakes are high for Africa’s biggest oil producer. “If that is not done Boko Haram may never end,” he said. “The present crop may be defeated now but in a few years another disgruntled group may rise under different cover because the factors that breed such criminal groups are still with us”. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/boko-haram-dims-hopes-oil-fuelled-revival-north/ |
VENTURES AFRICA – Following a 60 percent completion of the first stage of the Abuja Light Rail Project, the Federal Capital Territory Administration of Nigeria – the administrative organisation of the country’s capital city – has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) to kick start the second stage of the project. Mr Ivoke Ochiagha, Secretary of FCT Transport Secreteriat, disclosed that the second phase of the project, whose total value is estimated at $792 million, was initiated because of the significant level of progress already made on the first stage. The rail length is expected to span across Garki Area 3, Wuse, Berger, Utako and Kubwa thus linking up major sections of the FCT and transporting up to half a million people everyday. Additionally, some 20,000 jobs are expected to be created by this initiative alone. Minister of the FCT, Malam Bala Mohammed, also asserted that the first phase should be ready for launch before the end of 2015. “We are pushing the light rail to a logical conclusion so that we can have a vibrant transportation. This is an addendum to the existing project going on,” he said. Effective transportation networks comprising road and rail networks are essential to the wholesome development of any metropolis and, indeed, any region. Africa continues to face crippling transportation challenges that infringe on overall productivity; hence the need to deploy effective transportation systems across the length and breadth of the continent. Three of such effective systems include the electric tramway system, the light rail transit (LRT) which is currently being deployed in Abuja and the subway system. A study on public transportation systems by the Swiss National Science Foundation shows that the electric tramway system can transport up to 20,000 people per hour, the LRT can do same for 30,000 people while the subway can move 50,000 people in the same amount of time. cramjones: You must be a wimp whose brain is pus-filled to have the enfontry to write this rubbish! Foward roll yourself away from here you slimy skunk!Your inability to engage your commentators in simple intellectual discuss without reverting to insult when their views seems not to tally with yours is what makes reading your write ups boring and simply unexciting and immature. Yes some may have views that are down right ridiculous and totally unacceptable. But can you learn to respond to them with simple civility? Much as you want to win support to your party, you have to learn to engage Nigerians and not look down on anybody. This is because the so called stupi.d ones are actually the voters. The intellectuals won't vote, the are so busy that the don't even have a voters card and even when they do, would rather not risk their lives going out on election day. When George Bush was reelected in the US, the headline in the dailymirror UK was " How could 60 million people be so stupi.d? " Well the stupi.d ones determine the individuals to rule on the so called intelligent ones. Thank you! |

Wow this is serious! Last time I checked oil producing communities of Niger Delta are still one hell of tarzan jungle with no even good source of clean drinking water. So plsss, someone should remind me, what the hell are these mofos fighting for again? |
barcanista: Let me tell you, al qaeda are WEAK today compared to what they were 10years ago. The death of Osama and their bigwigs caused a lot of damage both psychologically. Alshaabab's can swear in a New President-General but the fact remains that their potency has been whittled down with the death of their leader. In a battle, the Death of the Leader is tantamous to defeat of the group. They can never remain the same again mentally and psychologically...When Mohammed Yusuf was killed we thought we've seen the end of BH, behold a new leader Shekau 1 was appointed and he became more vicious and deadlier than Yusuf and BH became stronger. When Shekau 1 was killed sometimes back we thought it's gonna be over soon, but rather a deadly viper Shekau 11(Bashir Mohammed) was appointed and he took the BH thing to a whole different level. So what makes you think celebrating their death is worth it? defeating and disarming them makes more sense than target elimination. |

(CNN) -- A Frenchman who was kidnapped over the weekend in Algeria appears to have been beheaded in a video that was posted online Wednesday. The video shows armed men beheading a man who appears to be Herve Gourdel -- a man who the French foreign ministry said was kidnapped Sunday in Algeria's Tizi-Ouzou region east of Algiers. In the video, the armed men claim to belong to Islamist militant group Jund al-Khilafa -- or Soldiers of the Caliphate -- in Algeria, and pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. ISIS execution videos strikingly similar The video -- titled "A message of blood for the French government" -- surfaced as French Prime Minister Manuel Valls addressed the French National Assembly, the country's lower house of parliament, about the fight against ISIS. By Wole Mosadomi MINNA —Three people including the paternal grandmother have been arrested by the Niger State police command for slaughtering a 9-year-old boy and using the body to prepare peper soup delicacy. The incidence happened in Koso village in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State. Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, Mr. Olusola Amore, told newsmen that the family of the late boy had reported Liman Doo Mohammed’s mysterious disappearance to the police on the 9th of last month. However, another report hinted the police that they should beam their search light on the paternal grandmother of the deceased, because he was last seen in her company. He said based on this vital information, detectives were put on red alert to closely monitor the grandmother called Fatima Sarki’s movement. Also arrested with her were other relations suspected to be her collaborators. Amore said on interrogation, the grandmother confessed to have been involved in the dastardly act and mentioned one Zhitsu Aliyu whom she said actually slaughtered the boy. Another accomplice mentioned was one Amina Musa, who was accused of helping to cook the boy’s remains. All the suspects have been charged to court on a three count charge of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and cannibalism. According to the Commissioner, ”The pots and plates the suspects used in cooking and serving themselves with the said cooked human flesh were recovered and are now exhibits.” The Commissioner revealed that between the months of August and September this year, a total of 65 raids were carried out within the state and a total of 182 suspects were arrested. Awoofawo: Which constitution conference are you talking about; you mean those one written in president kitchenMaybe you should read more of your history than nairaland probably you will be educated on how your nation evolved. |
ezeagu: The Scottish independence movement has (or had) absolutely no resemblance to Nigeria's geopolitical landscape, to start with, Scotland is already its own country, that is in a union with the United Kingdom, they have their own parliament, capital, governance, and so on. Scotland is in a good deal with England and the UK already, whereas (most of) the component parts of Nigeria are actually not gaining anything from the Nigerian union. You see, you've based the benefits of staying in Nigeria on things that could/should/would happen unlike how Scotland has based it's unity with the UK with things that were already on ground. Do you think Scotland would have stayed in the UK if all it did was take its resources, tke away its independence (again Scotland is already an independent country), and bog it down with troubles that are not their own such as serious distant ethno-religious clashes/wars (like Boko Haram), polar-opposite political arrangements (a la Sharia law), bad governance, and tense ethno-religious shaped politics? No, they wouldn't.In one breath you said Scotland is independent in another you said it its not. Is Scotland an independent country? |
GodMode: Nigeria was never meant to be. It was created by foreigners. The minor and major tribes in Nigeria didn't hold a meeting of unity. Nigeria was imposed on the tribes. There has been several constitutional conferences held prior to independence and after it. And all have agreed to remain within the entity nigeria. Even the most divisive of them the aburi accord did not call for the dissolution of the country. |
I think this guyz are really interested in further destabilisation of this country. What do they stand to gain? |
okk o...Another round of blackout. Soon we will hear that APC is responsible! |
Okk EU, we don hear... what's in it for you? |

By Emmanuel Ugwu Ethnic youth organizations from the Southeast and Southwest geopolitical zones have agreed to go into an alliance in order to present a united front in the fight against the Islamic insurgent group, Boko Haram, which has intensified its murderous activities in parts of the north. The decision to form a broad based youth alliance against Boko Haram was made known Thursday at a press conference by the Leaders of Yoruba Youth Council Worldwide (YYCW), Comrade Eric Oluwole and National President of Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) the youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro following a five-hour meeting at Enugu that lasted through Wednesday night. Explaining the rationale for the youth alliance, Oluwole said that it would enable the youths to determine how they could contribute in moving the nation forward, adding that youths were unhappy with the blood shed engendered by the insurgents and could no longer fold their hands and allow this country to be destroyed by evil forces in whatever name. “The main point of our meeting today is to come together and think of how we can deliver this country from every evil because the power of this country lies on us as youths who are the leaders of tomorrow” Oluwole stated. He said that the OYC and YYCW have come together to form the alliance and would reach out to youth orginations in other ethnic nationalities across the country with the expectation that they would join them in this alliance to rescue Nigeria. berem: You're not serious. We are talking about almost 70 south africans who died in a foreign land and you're talking about making money from religious tourism? Abegi! So in your myopic mind, you've made a reasonable comment. You know what, I think the SA government should not only ban their citizens from coming to scoan but to the whole of Lagos state cause there are countless buildings collapsing in lagos and we don't know which one is gonna be next. Heck they can ban them coming to the goddam country nigeria cause bombs are flying all over the place and terrorist are butchering their citizens or maybe ebola should be a more plausible reason. I didn't hear you say FG should ban Nigerians from going to scoan or maybe in your myopic mind Nigerians didn't die in that building too. |
berem: So that was the building before it collapsed? Chai!you shouldn't pray for that, even if you don't believe in pastor TB, consider the economic benefit accrue to the country in terms of tourism and foreign exchange earnings. There where about 300 south Africans alone in scoan when the building collapsed. This is minus other nationals. We could channel this as a source of religious tourism. |
