PoliticsChinese Consortium To Build 1,000MW Coal Power Plant In Enugu Nigeria by Eldavido1(op): 6:38pm On Sep 30, 2014
VENTURES AFRICA – Chinese consortium HTG-Pacific Energy has
signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian
Government for the exploitation and mining of the Ezinmo Coal
Bricks in the country’s coal-rich eastern state of Enugu. Nigerian
authorities say the MoU will be followed by a Power Purchase
Agreement (PPA) that would authorise the investors to build a 1000
megawatts coal power generating plant.
Nigeria, richly endowed with vast natural resources, is exploring
diverse means of power generation to solve country’s gross power
supply deficits. The country last year privatised its state-owned
hydropower and gas-fired power plants, to leverage on the business
expertise of private investors to boost the productiveness of the
plants. Nigeria has also opened its arms to investors interested in
exploring other forms of energy generation, with recent deals for a
50 megawatt solar station struck.
The coal deal with HTG-Pacific is seen as a means of utilizing the
abundant coal reserves which the Nigerian government says is
capable of generating up to 30 percent of the country’s energy
needs environmental-friendly clean technology.
Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo, who represented the
President at the signing of the MoU with the Chinese consortium
said the plant would complement other public and private driven
electricity projects as well as improve the power supply of the host
state and the eastern region as a whole.

A Nigerian medical personel suggested something like that during the early days of ebola in nigeria but was largely ignore by our health officials while we were busy begging for zmap. Since both Ebola and HIV are RNA viruses chances are one of the numerous HIV drugs could have some impact on the virus.
HealthDoctor Treats Ebola With HIV Drug In Liberia -- Seemingly Successfully: CNN by Eldavido1(op): 5:53am On Sep 29, 2014
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. Gobee Logan tried using lamivudine against Ebola out of sheer
desperation
Only two out of 15 patients taking it died -- far lower than the
average death rate
Logan read about the medication and similarities between Ebola
and HIV in a medical journal
(CNN) -- A doctor in rural Liberia inundated with Ebola patients says
he's had good results with a treatment he tried out of sheer
desperation: an HIV drug.
Dr. Gobee Logan has given the drug, lamivudine, to 15 Ebola
patients, and all but two survived. That's a 7% mortality rate.
Across West Africa, the virus has killed 70% of its victims.
Outside Logan's Ebola center in Tubmanburg, four of his recovering
patients walk the grounds, always staying inside the fence that
separates the Ebola patients from everyone else.
"My stomach was hurting; I was feeling weak; I was vomiting,"
Elizabeth Kundu, 23, says of her bout with the virus. "They gave me
medicine, and I'm feeling fine. We take it, and we can eat -- we're
feeling fine in our bodies."
Kundu and the other 12 patients who took the lamivudine and
survived, received the drug in the first five days or so of their illness.
The two patients who died received it between days five and eight.
"I'm sure that when [patients] present early, this medicine can help,"
Logan said. "I've proven it right in my center."
Two doctors for 85,000 people
Logan is mindful that lamivudine can cause liver and other problems,
but he says it's worth the risk since Ebola is so deadly.
He also knows American researchers will say only a real study can
prove effectiveness. That would involve taking a much larger patient
population and giving half of them lamivudine and the other half a
placebo.
"Our people are dying and you're taking about studies?" he said.
"It's a matter of doing all that I can do as a doctor to save some
people's lives."
Logan said he got the idea to try lamivudine when he read in
scientific journals that HIV and Ebola replicate inside the body in
much the same way.
"Ebola is a brainchild of HIV," he said. "It's a destructive strain of
HIV."
At first he tried an HIV drug called acyclovir, but it didn't seem to be
effective. Then he tried lamivudine on a healthcare worker who'd
become ill, and within a day or two he showed signs of improvement
and survived.
One woman walked in, and the Ebola nightmare began
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases says that theoretically, Logan's approach has
some merit. Lamivudine is a nucleocide analog, and other drugs in
this class are being studied to treat Ebola.
Fauci asked CNN to give Logan his email address, saying perhaps
his lab could do some follow up work.
Logan says he plans to email Fauci this weekend.

PoliticsBoko Haram Occupy Northern Oil Fields by Eldavido1(op): 2:45pm On Sep 28, 2014
Social and economic development has long been touted as the way to revive the fortunes of Nigeria’s impoverished north and
prevent legions of disaffected young men turning to radical Islam.
But Boko Haram violence has scuppered progress, particularly from one potentially lucrative source of revenue — the oil found
under the Lake Chad Basin in the country’s far northeast.
Nigeria struck black gold in the Kukawa area of Borno state in 2012, with estimates that 100 billion cubic metres of deposits lie
beneath the lake and its arid hinterland.
The discovery raised hopes not just because of its potential to transform the region economically but to also help boost Nigeria’s
oil reserves by three billion barrels to 40 billion barrels.
But the former head of the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu, said in March that plans
to start production had been put on hold because of the conflict.
Geologists, engineers and other technical staff quit while the country’s main oil unions warned workers to stay away, putting paid
to extraction and further exploration.
“We have advised our members to avoid the northeast because we don’t want them to be killed by the lawless group,” said
Babatunde Oke of the white-collar oil workers union PENGASSAN.
A senior NNPC official said efforts were ongoing to make the region safe for oil workers, against a backdrop of militant gains of
towns and villages across the states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa.
“For now, the plan is on hold because of the Boko Haram unrest,” he told AFP.
“But the GMD (group managing director) Joseph Dawha is in talks with (the) Nigeria airforce to ensure safe exploration in the
Chad Basin.”
- No blood and oil -
Five years of relentless violence in northeast Nigeria has claimed thousands of lives and made hundreds of thousands of others
homeless.
The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, now the Muslim emir of Kano, said this month that
investment in the north was key to preventing radicalisation.
For Mustapha Ibrahim, a political scientist at Yobe State University, oil in particular could help reduce poverty, unemployment and
lack of education which fuel radical recruitment.
“We need to address this social malaise to effectively tackle Boko Haram and this can be achieved with the judicious use of money
from oil in the Chad Basin when oil production finally starts,” he said.
“The oil money will facilitate job and employment generation, mass education opportunities and other social and economic
programmes which will in the long run do away with the factors responsible for the Boko Haram violence raging now.”
Boko Haram wants to carve out a hardline Islamic state in Nigeria but there have been no serious suggestions that its insurgency
is driven by oil.
“There is no evidence that Boko Haram or their associates are motivated by a desire for control of oil,” said Andrew Noakes,
coordinator of the Nigeria Security Network of analysts.
“The insurgency is driven primarily by ideological, religious, and socio-economic grievances rather than pursuit of financial gain.”
- Avoid the resource curse -
Nevertheless, in the maelstrom of rumours that is Nigerian politics, there have been claims that some northern leaders have
been fuelling the rebellion for personal economic gain.
One theory is that no oil extraction can be carried out as long as there is instability in Nigeria’s northeast, giving neighbouring
Chad free rein to pump out crude from the shared basins in the region from its side of the border.
If and when the conflict ends, analysts say it will be vital to learn from the mistakes made in the Niger Delta region, where most
of the country’s oil is currently produced.
The Delta has been wracked by violence while decades of corruption and mismanagement have done little to improve the lives of
ordinary people, despite the billions the industry produces.
“Everything must be done to avoid the resource curse,” said Debo Adeniran, from the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, a
pressure group. “Oil should be a blessing rather than a curse.”
Only good governance and accountability will bring the insurgency to an end, according to Ibrahim, warning that the stakes are
high for Africa’s biggest oil producer.
“If that is not done Boko Haram may never end,” he said.
“The present crop may be defeated now but in a few years another disgruntled group may rise under different cover because the
factors that breed such criminal groups are still with us”.

PoliticsFCTA, China Sign $792 Million Deal For Abuja Rail Project by Eldavido1(op): 6:05am On Sep 27, 2014
VENTURES AFRICA – Following a 60 percent completion of the first
stage of the Abuja Light Rail Project, the Federal Capital Territory
Administration of Nigeria – the administrative organisation of the
country’s capital city – has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with the China Civil Engineering Construction
Company (CCECC) to kick start the second stage of the project.
Mr Ivoke Ochiagha, Secretary of FCT Transport Secreteriat,
disclosed that the second phase of the project, whose total value is
estimated at $792 million, was initiated because of the significant
level of progress already made on the first stage.
The rail length is expected to span across Garki Area 3, Wuse,
Berger, Utako and Kubwa thus linking up major sections of the FCT
and transporting up to half a million people everyday. Additionally,
some 20,000 jobs are expected to be created by this initiative alone.
Minister of the FCT, Malam Bala Mohammed, also asserted that the
first phase should be ready for launch before the end of 2015. “We
are pushing the light rail to a logical conclusion so that we can have
a vibrant transportation. This is an addendum to the existing project
going on,” he said.
Effective transportation networks comprising road and rail networks
are essential to the wholesome development of any metropolis and,
indeed, any region. Africa continues to face crippling transportation
challenges that infringe on overall productivity; hence the need to
deploy effective transportation systems across the length and
breadth of the continent.
Three of such effective systems include the electric tramway
system, the light rail transit (LRT) which is currently being deployed
in Abuja and the subway system. A study on public transportation
systems by the Swiss National Science Foundation shows that the
electric tramway system can transport up to 20,000 people per hour,
the LRT can do same for 30,000 people while the subway can move
50,000 people in the same amount of time.

In a battle, the Death of the Leader is tantamous to defeat of the group. They can never remain the same again mentally and psychologically...

I don't know where your argument is but it is not logical
When Mohammed Yusuf was killed we thought we've seen the end of BH, behold a new leader Shekau 1 was appointed and he became more vicious and deadlier than Yusuf and BH became stronger. When Shekau 1 was killed sometimes back we thought it's gonna be over soon, but rather a deadly viper Shekau 11(Bashir Mohammed) was appointed and he took the BH thing to a whole different level. So what makes you think celebrating their death is worth it? defeating and disarming them makes more sense than target elimination.

And they were busy telling us all the girls are well taking care of and in good condition. May God give them the strength to survive whatsoever traumatic experience life throws at them both in captivity and even out of it.
PoliticsAbducted Chibok Girl Found In Mubi by Eldavido1(op): 4:08am On Sep 25, 2014
By Daji Sani in Yola who travelled more than four hours to Mubi to cover the story

One of the female students, named Susan, who was abducted by the Boko Haram sect from Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State last April, was found by the police in the early hours of yesterday in Mubi, Adamawa State, two days after she was thrown off a truck by her captors, THISDAY has learnt.

This is just as the Defence Headquaters (DHQ) yesterday confirmed the death of an insurgent, who it claimed had been impersonating the leader of the terror sect, Abubakar Shekau, for over a year.

A senior police officer in Mubi confirmed that the girl was dropped off near the Divisional Police Headquarters in Mubi by locals who discovered her after she was thrown off a truck that was being used by insurgents to escape from Nigerian troops.

He said when the girl was found, she was incoherent, and had scars and injuries all over her body because she had been battered by her assailants, and left by the road by locals near the police station.

The police officer said Susan is one of the 219 Chibok girls, whose abduction had attracted the attention of the international community and a global coalition to find and rescue them.

He said the girl had old and fresh wounds and scars all over her body, with swollen legs because she had walked a long distance for two days after being thrown off the truck by her abductors.

“She had old and fresh wounds and her legs were swollen, may be because she trekked a long distance, and you could see marks on her body where she was mercilessly beaten by her abductors, I believe,” the senior police officer volunteered.

Another person, who identified himself as Mallam Musa, also informed THISDAY that the police yesterday morning found a young girl stranded on the road, near the police station.

He said the girl had fresh and old wounds on her body, adding that she had obviously been beaten and maltreated.

Musa said the young girl might have walked from Sambisa Forest, the enclave of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents, which transverses Adamawa and Borno States.

A security source in Mubi, also said he was certain that Susan is one of the kidnapped Chibok girls.

He informed THISDAY that the she had been handed moved by Mubi Police Command to the Yola Police Command in the Adamawa State capital.

Efforts to reach the Nigerian Army Public Relations Officer, Captain Nuhu Jefaru of the 23 Amoured Brigade in Yola, were not successful, while the Public Relation Officer of the Police Command in Yola, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Michael Haa, said he was yet to receive any information on Susan.

However, the leader of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group and former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, in elated late night tweets, confirmed the discovery of Susan
Tweeting from her twitter handle @obyezeks at 11.17 pm, Ezekwesili announced the news of Susan’s rescue.

This came barely three hours after Ezekwesili had granted an interview to Aljazeera about the missing girls and the struggles of the BBOG group.

She wrote: “After the emotional upheaval of yesterday's (Tuesday) dashed hopes, today came with the factual return of one of our 219 #ChibokGirls. She’s in trauma.

“One #ChibokGirl, miraculously found in a bush by locals and returned today, is confirmed by Chibok parents with her in Yola. Incredible!

“It is hard to comprehend the return of Susan who is yet incoherent. The locals that found her took her to Mubi Police and now moved to Yola.

“The eternal optimist that I am makes me see the return of Susan as a good sign for the rest of our 219 Chibok daughters. They shall return!!

“One hopes that our security/military would approach Susan’s return in a way that helps us learn more in the next couple of days.”

Giving more insight into Susan’s discovery, another member of the BBOG group, Ms. Hadiza Usman, informed THISDAY that the young girl was traumatised and incoherent when she was found by the police in Mubi.

She revealed that one of the Chibok parents travelled to Mubi and identified her, adding, “She has been moved from the Mubi police station to the Yola Police Command, following which she would be taken to the hospital this morning.”

She said the authorities tried to stabilise her so she could be debriefed, expressing hope that Susan’s release would give the security agencies some insight as to where other Chibok students who were kidnapped with her are held captive.

PoliticsUS Blocks Nigeria’s Purchase Of Chinook Helicopters From Israel by Eldavido1(op): 7:54am On Sep 23, 2014
Concerns mount over double standards, US’ intent over Boko Haram

Efforts by the Nigerian military to procure US-made Chinook helicopters from Israel, to facilitate the movement of troops and the injured, have been blocked by the United States Government, THISDAY has learnt.

This, among other issues, including the US’ refusal to provide Nigeria’s security agencies with timely intelligence needed to defeat Boko Haram insurgents who have been riding rough shod in the North-east, would form part of the discussions when President Goodluck Jonathan meets with US President Barack Obama in New York this week.

Jonathan departed for New York on Sunday for the 69th General Assembly of the United Nations.

The Chinook is a versatile and reliable American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter produced by Boeing. Its primary roles are troops movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply.

In a war where Boko Haram insurgents move in convoys through arid towns and villages, the helicopters are required to checkmate them, reinforce troops and supplies and recover dead and wounded soldiers.

Although it has a number of variants and is used primarily for the transportation of troops, supplies and search and rescue operations, limited weaponry can be mounted on its door and window for the purpose of enemy attacks.

However, according to defence and intelligence sources, attempts to buy the helicopters and other munitions from, first the US and other Western European countries, have proved to be an impossible task, thus compelling the military to resort to Israel and several retired members of the Israeli defense forces.

Opening up on the challenges the Nigerian military has faced dealing with the procurement of arms for the war effort in the North-east, a knowledgeable official, who did not want to be named as he was not authorised to speak with the press, said: “The US government has frustrated Nigeria all the way in our war against terrorism despite its public statements in support of Nigeria, as it fights the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-east… They want us to fight Boko Haram with our arms tied to our backs.

“They have refused to sell us arms and equipment and even our recent attempt to buy Chinook helicopters, which are manufactured in the US, from the Israelis was blocked, based on unfounded allegations of human rights violations by our troops. This is after the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu had initially approved the purchase.

“But because they were supplied by the Americans, the Israelis required a ‘No Objection’ letter from Washington which was refused.

“We had even tried to procure arms from Russia but this was stalled because of the Ukrainian crisis, thus compelling us to turn to other nations like Israel. But even this has been frustrated by the US,” he said.

He said it was not just in the area of arms procurement that US has been most unhelpful, adding that contrary to its public stance that it was assisting in the rescue operations of the abducted Chibok secondary school girls it has done nothing significant to help Nigeria in this regard.

Other intelligence sources also cited the fact that the US has refused to share intelligence with Nigerian security forces in a timely manner.

They said: “When we complained they started sharing some intelligence, but days after the fact when such intelligence is of little value.

“They have blocked us from procuring the helicopters and would not provide us with intelligence despite the fact that they have several drones and sophisticated aircraft overflying the North-east of Nigeria from bases in Niger and Chad where the Boko Haram fighters and movements are clearly in their sights.

“This belies their stance they want to help us to defeat the terrorists and help to rescue the Chibok girls.”

Indeed, a security analyst who spoke to THISDAY on the issue said the US’ role smacks of double standards and questioned its intent over the Boko Haram insurgency.

He warned that ignoring the threat of Boko Haram could be a strategy that could come to haunt the US in the future.

He also wondered why the same US would refuse to assist Nigeria based on unsubstantiated claims of human rights violations, which the military has repeatedly denied and insisted are carried out by Boko Haram insurgents wearing Nigerian military uniforms, yet the same US turns a blind eye to the same human rights violations committed by countries like Israel.

“Look at what happened in the recent war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza strip. Israel repeatedly bombed school compounds and UN buildings and in the process killed scores of women and children.

“Even the UN cried out against the targeting of its facilities by Israeli forces, yet the US did nothing and will continue to supply arms and ammunition to Israel to defend itself against Palestinians and other hostile neighbours in the Middle East,” the security analyst said.

Efforts by THISDAY to get the White House to respond to the allegations were not successful.

Two questions to the White House and the US National Security Adviser’s office which were unanswered as at press time are: The Nigerian military, through its agents, tried to buy Chinook helicopters for the prosecution of the war against terrorism, from Israel. But this was blocked by the U.S. National Security Council and the White House. If so, why was the procurement blocked?; and the decision to block the procurement of the helicopters may have stemmed from U.S.’ concerns over human rights abuses by Nigerian troops who have been fighting the insurgents in the North-eastern part of the country. Does this not appear contradictory given the fact that the U.S. continues to supply equipment and ammunition to Israel, which is also accused of human rights violations in Palestinian territories?

ezeagu: The Scottish independence movement has (or had) absolutely no resemblance to Nigeria's geopolitical landscape, to start with, Scotland is already its own country, that is in a union with the United Kingdom, they have their own parliament, capital, governance, and so on. Scotland is in a good deal with England and the UK already, whereas (most of) the component parts of Nigeria are actually not gaining anything from the Nigerian union. You see, you've based the benefits of staying in Nigeria on things that could/should/would happen unlike how Scotland has based it's unity with the UK with things that were already on ground. Do you think Scotland would have stayed in the UK if all it did was take its resources, tke away its independence (again Scotland is already an independent country), and bog it down with troubles that are not their own such as serious distant ethno-religious clashes/wars (like Boko Haram), polar-opposite political arrangements (a la Sharia law), bad governance, and tense ethno-religious shaped politics? No, they wouldn't.
In one breath you said Scotland is independent in another you said it its not. Is Scotland an independent country?

There has been several constitutional conferences held prior to independence and after it. And all have agreed to remain within the entity nigeria. Even the most divisive of them the aburi accord did not call for the dissolution of the country.

By Emmanuel Ugwu
Ethnic youth organizations from the Southeast and Southwest
geopolitical zones have agreed to go into an alliance in order to
present a united front in the fight against the Islamic insurgent
group, Boko Haram, which has intensified its murderous activities in
parts of the north.
The decision to form a broad based youth alliance against Boko
Haram was made known Thursday at a press conference by the
Leaders of Yoruba Youth Council Worldwide (YYCW), Comrade Eric
Oluwole and National President of Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC)
the youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro
following a five-hour meeting at Enugu that lasted through
Wednesday night.
Explaining the rationale for the youth alliance, Oluwole said that it
would enable the youths to determine how they could contribute in
moving the nation forward, adding that youths were unhappy with
the blood shed engendered by the insurgents and could no longer
fold their hands and allow this country to be destroyed by evil
forces in whatever name.
“The main point of our meeting today is to come together and think
of how we can deliver this country from every evil because the
power of this country lies on us as youths who are the leaders of
tomorrow” Oluwole stated.
He said that the OYC and YYCW have come together to form the
alliance and would reach out to youth orginations in other ethnic
nationalities across the country with the expectation that they
would join them in this alliance to rescue Nigeria.

berem: You're not serious. We are talking about almost 70 south africans who died in a foreign land and you're talking about making money from religious tourism? Abegi!
So in your myopic mind, you've made a reasonable comment. You know what, I think the SA government should not only ban their citizens from coming to scoan but to the whole of Lagos state cause there are countless buildings collapsing in lagos and we don't know which one is gonna be next. Heck they can ban them coming to the goddam country nigeria cause bombs are flying all over the place and terrorist are butchering their citizens or maybe ebola should be a more plausible reason. I didn't hear you say FG should ban Nigerians from going to scoan or maybe in your myopic mind Nigerians didn't die in that building too.

berem: So that was the building before it collapsed? Chai!
I hope the SA government bans its people from coming to TB Joshua's church to seek for fake miracles.
you shouldn't pray for that, even if you don't believe in pastor TB, consider the economic benefit accrue to the country in terms of tourism and foreign exchange earnings. There where about 300 south Africans alone in scoan when the building collapsed. This is minus other nationals. We could channel this as a source of religious tourism.
