As an advocate of quality and well formated book content, I am not happy when people suggests paid ad for authors who say they are not making sales on Kindle books.

This is how AMS advert work: when a potential buyer of your book clicks on your ad, you pay Amazon a certain amount somewhere between. $0.02 to $0.35 per click, depending on what you choosed

You can decide that your ad should show either in the search results, or on the product listing of a similar book.
Using the search results, you're banking on the right keyword you have choosing and your quality content to convince buyers.
But using the product listing of similar book you're hoping to convince buyers of that book that yours has better content.
In either case your book content plays an important role otherwise buyers will click on your ad, Amazon takes their money from your credit card, after scanning your book, most of them will not buy. Now you're at a loss rather than gain
As many people that clicks but don't buy your book because it was not well prepared, you are losing money.
So don't think that if you're not making sales, paid advert will solve the problem.
Just as I questioned proponents of "keyword against content " I usually tell my clients who doubted the visibility of their book to offer free book instead, and see if people Will not read it.

All sales i made were purely organic. Reason been that ams is too tricky and requires indept knowledge, else u will just be dashing Jeff Bezos money. But i am experimenting on something, i want to lease email list from a book marketing company with crazy email list for both fiction and non fiction and it will cost me $25 a day for them to promote my book. Like i said, i am testing the waters. The promo is billed for 18th of this month. Now, here is what i intend to do, i will calculate how much the book sold from 1st of July till the 17th, jot it down. Then i will look at sales for the 18th July (D Day for the promo) and then subtract the amount from organic sales of the said book. If it brings in something substantial, say an additional $500 or more, then i will make you know if to promote your books using the said website.

For your second question, i don't do fiction, but i am everywhere in the non-fiction niches. Although i am trying to build a brand to get email list. i hope i answered your question?

Reading through this thread has also convinced me that self publishing is route I would like to test out.
But my only problem now is if my old PC will allow do me the job.
will my old 10 inch laptop with 1gb suffice for all the tools I need? or do I need to get another one( which i don't have the money for right now)?

The new rules are
1. Publish the best book you can even if you're from naija.

2. Do and redo a good cover.

3. Get your website ready so you grab emails that will give you reviews.

4. You need reviews from day one.
5. Keep some kudi (money) for ads
6. Don't publish only a book, do something like
How to bake bread, how to bake sourdough, how to bake pasta. Etc. They are called series.

7. I reserve this rule for paid students

9. Re engineer your keyword research.
10. Upload to other site apart from Amazon
So those are the rules.

My site is getting set so I can collect mails from those who will leave reviews for me.
