Politics › Economy Will Pick Up In 2017, Says FG by emamos(op): 6:18pm On Jul 21, 2016
The Federal Government on Thursday assessed the nation’s economy and returned a verdict that 2016 has so far been a difficult year for Nigeria.

It said things are expected to start picking up for the nation by next year.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma, said these while answering questions from State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the National Economic Council presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

Udoma was joined at the briefing by the Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku; and his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Bello.

The minister said Nigeria could only be said to be in recession if it records two quarters of negative growth.

He said since the country had experienced negative growth in the first quarter, the country will be said to be in technical recession if the second quarter which is still being expected is also negative.

He said, “Recession is basically when you have two quarters of negative growth. We had a first quarter of negative growth and we are still waiting to get all the figures for the second quarter which has just ended in June.

“The National Bureau of Statistics will be giving us all the figures but if as we suspect, the second quarter is also negative, then of course technically you could say that we are in recession if those figures turned out to be so.

“But even if we are not, the situation in the economy right now is one that of course we are addressing.”

Udoma said while the Federal Government expected some of the factors that have been impacting negatively on the economy, some others were unexpected.

Politics › Nigeria: Oil - Indian Buyers Turn To Asia Over Unsteady Nigeria Supply by emamos(op): 2:10pm On Jul 21, 2016
There are rising expectations that more Indian crude refiners could switch their focus to Southeast Asia for supplies because of growing uncertainty over the exports of Nigerian crude grades.
According to US-based energy publication, Platts, India's state-owned company, Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd, is the latest to have issued a spot tender to purchase several Malaysian light sweet crude grades.
BPCL is seeking up to one million barrels of various Malaysian light sweet crudes as well as Brunei's crudes for loading over September 11-20, according to an official tender notice seen by S&P Global Platts which closes July 22.
The latest spot tender raised a few eyebrows in the Asia-Pacific sweet crude market because BPCL does not regularly seek Malaysian and Bruneian crude grades in the spot market.
A company source told Platts on Tuesday that BPCL's latest move was seen as necessary, as the procurement of any Nigerian crude grades would be a big risk amid ongoing production hiccups caused by militant attacks in the Niger Delta.
"BPCL, like many other Indian state-run companies, prefer to take Nigerian light sweet crudes like Qua Iboe and Bonny Light. Those are the number one choices," the source said, adding that "when production (of light sweet Nigerian grades is) in doubt, the next best option would be the Malaysian (grades)."
ExxonMobil had last week placed Nigerian crude Qua Iboe under force majeure and exports were halted, while Italian company Eni confirmed earlier this month that 4,000 b/d of oil equivalent of equity production had been shut-in following an attack claimed by militants in the Niger Delta.

Politics › IMF Says Nigeria Heading Into Recession by emamos(op): 4:21pm On Jul 19, 2016
The IMF slashed its growth forecast for the Nigerian economy this year on Tuesday, saying a combination of plunging oil revenues and weakened investor confidence will push it into recession.
The International Monetary Fund said it expects Africa’s largest economy to contract by 1.8 percent this year, after having forecast in April a 2.3 percent expansion.
Nigeria’s stall, and sluggish activity in the number two economy, South Africa, is expected to pull down economic growth across sub-Saharan Africa, the IMF said, forecasting a “dramatic implication.”
“In 2016, regional output growth will fall short of population growth, implying declining per capita incomes,” it said.
Nigeria’s economy has been battered hard by the plunge in oil prices, the main source of the country’s income, as well as prices of other key commodities.
In addition, rebels in the southern oil region have forced crude production cutbacks, and internal unrest, especially attacks by the Boko Haram group in the north, has also hurt the economy.
Inflation hit an 11-year high of 16.5 percent in June as prices of food and energy jumped after the government freed up the naira currency in April, allowing it to plummet against the US dollar.
Also weighing on output have been electricity shortages due to rebels’ sabotage of the gas pipelines that fire power plants.

Crime › Our Lives Inside Prison – Convicted Soldiers by emamos(op): 1:43pm On Jul 17, 2016
.‘We’re Being Incarcerated With Armed Robbers, Drug Addicts, Hardened Criminals’
.‘Rashes, Lice, Bedbugs Rampant In Our Detention Cells’
.Beg Buhari: Pardon Us as Arms Probe Has Exposed Real Culprits

Some soldiers currently serving various jail terms for refusing to fight Boko Haram in the North-East, yesterday described as pathetic, the condition in which they are being held in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos.
The soldiers are among the 54 Nigerian Army personnel sentenced to death by a military court-martial in 2014 after they were convicted of mutiny charges by disobeying orders to join the fight against Boko Haram.
The soldiers, who were from 111 Special Forces Battalion, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
After their conviction, they were transferred to Lagos, pending the confirmation of the judgement by the Army Council.
But a partial reprieve came their way when, in 2015, the Nigerian Army commuted the death sentence to 10 years imprisonment.
Announcing the decision, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Sani Usman, said, “The sentences are to run concurrently.”
While in Lagos, the convicts were divided into three groups and detained in the Kirikiri Maximum Prison and Ikoyi Prison, respectively.
Speaking to our correspondent at the Ikoyi Prison on Saturday, some of the soldiers called on President Muhammadu Buhari to grant them presidential pardon to end their long incarceration which began in 2014.
They said their plea to th e president was hinged on the shocking discoveries made by the panel set up to probe the procurement of arms and ammunition for the war against Boko Haram. They said the revelations that billions of naira meant for the purchase of arms was embezzled by senior military officers and their civilian collaborators had cleared them of the allegation of refusing to fight, and showed that the required equipment were not made available to them.
The soldiers said their families had been made to undergo hardship as a result of their prolonged incarceration.
“The girl I was planning to marry has abandoned me and married someone else. The wives of five of my fellow inmates have since returned to their families, practically ending their marriages. Some of us have lost their parents and siblings because of our imprisonment,” one of them said.
According to them, they had been told that President Buhari was going to grant them amnesty on May 29 when he was expected to name the people that had returned stolen money to the government.
The soldiers said they had been trying to cope with life in their new environment, adding that the condition was very difficult.
“We are being detained in cells that have not less 180 inmates, among them armed robbers, drug addicts and other hardened criminals. Also, rashes, lice and bedbugs have infested our bodies,” another soldier said.
Recalling how their predicament started, one of the soldiers, who told Daily Trust on Sunday that they had been trained in Pakistan and Yugoslavia to qualify as members of a special force, said: “We were sent to Maiduguri in 2013 at the height of the Boko Haram crisis. We were among the soldiers who fought and recovered some territories which had fallen to the terrorists.
“We were lucky to have escaped an ambush set by the insurgents in 2014. During the ambush, some of our colleges died in a shootout.
“Our offence simply is that we demanded that we be properly equipped so that we could confront the terrorists headlong. We personally made the request to our unit commander during one of our interactions. The following day, about 2am, we were woken up by the authorities. We later discovered that the simple request we made to the authorities was later interpreted to mean mutiny. All efforts made at trying to put things in the proper perspectives fell on deft ears.
“The leadership of the Nigerian Army then ordered that we be court-martialled. However, recent investigations into the procurement of arms by the authorities have shown that, contrary to the claims that we refused to be deployed, and that we abandoned the fight against Boko Haram, it is now an open secret that our demand to be equipped was not out of place.
“It is also in the public domain how money meant for the purchase of arms was criminally diverted and shared by some very few persons.
“It is in this light that we are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to grant us pardon and direct that we go back to our duty posts as we are very willing to continue to serve the nation.”
On Thursday, the federal government announced that President Buhari had accepted the recommendation of the committee investigating the defence equipment procurement from 2007 to 2015 to further investigate two former chiefs of army staff, retired Lt.-Generals O.A. Ihejirika and K.T.J. Minimah, as well as a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Dr Nurudeen Mohammed, in connection with the multi-billion naira defence contract scandal.
Others to be so investigated are three former permanent secretaries, Ministry of Defence, namely, Mr. Bukar Goni Aji, Mr. Haruna Sanusi and Me. E. O, Oyemomi.
The recommendation was part of the third interim report of the Committee on the Audit of Defence Equipment.
Meanwhile, a human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called for the immediate release of the soldiers.
According to him, this has become necessary as a result of the earth-shaking revelations from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), that few individuals cornered and shared the huge fund earmarked for the procurement of military hardware to prosecute the war on terror.
He said that all the convicted military officers should be released immediately.
“As I have repeatedly maintained, the soldiers were committed and sentenced to death for asking for weapons to fight the terrorists. They were ordered to fight with unserviceable equipment on the ground that there was no money to purchase new weapons.
“In the process, the well-equipped insurgents routed and massacred thousands of the country’s ill-equipped soldiers due to the diversion of the fund set aside to purchase equipment,” Falana said.
Case Timeline:
• Alleged offence committed on August 4, 2014.
• Trial began on October 15, 2014.
• The Court martial death sentence handed on December 17, 2014.
Charges

• That they disobeyed orders to join operations against Boko Haram.
• All the accused soldiers pleaded not guilty to the charges.
• The offence is punishable under Section 52(1) (a) of the Armed Forces Act Cap A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
• The soldiers are of the 111 Special Forces Battalion.
• The soldiers were convicted in Abuja and sentenced to die by firing squad. Four were acquitted.
Death sentence reviewed
• The Army on Sunday August 2, 2015 announced the review of death sentence.
Sentence commuted to 10 years imprisonment
• On December 19, 2015, the army commuted the death sentence to 10 years imprisonment
• On December 20, 2015, Falana demanded the 10-year’s jail term be quashed.

Family › Would You Keep A Joint Account With Your Spouse? by emamos(op): 5:26pm On Jul 16, 2016
Having a joint bank account with your spouse could be one of the smartest or dumbest things you ever do. That’s because in the right
circumstances, having a joint bank account brings you and your spouse together and helps you both stay on the same page with respect to saving, budgeting, spending and even investing. But in the wrong circumstances, having a joint account leads to financial failure, resentment, accusations, anger and sometimes, divorce. Clearly there is a lot at stake. Which way would you go?Some of our entertainers shared their opinions as follows;
I will because I trust him – Ruth Eze, Actress
Yes, I will keep a joint account with my husband because in the first place, I trusted him and that’s why I got married to him. His money is mine and vice-versa. We belong to each other. If I can trust my future with him, why can’t I trust my money with him too.
-
No chance in hell am I doing that! – Seyi Hunter, Actress
No chance in hell am I keeping a joint account with my spouse. Men are the most unreliable specimen on the planet. Once he starts keeping other girls, he’ll use my money to cater for them. Some men even have children outside without the knowledge of their wives. When he dies, you’ll now see some mysterious names in his will, coming to split what’s 50% yours with your children.
-
It will make our relationship stronger- Yetunde Bakare, Actress
Yes, I’ll keep a joint account with him because it will enable us manage our income and expenses effectively. We will be able to carry each other along and it will make our relationship stronger.
-
It may create problems for us – Seaman Adah, Music Producer
I can’t because women easily get carried away with what they see. Besides, women like to be a little independent with their spending and men tend to be controlling. So, problems will develop when she has to take permission before spending money and the man doesn’t do the same.
-
It will help us monitor spending – Ijeoma Imoh, Actress
Of course, I can. It will help us monitor each other’s spending especially in this tough economic situation. We both must be signatories to the account, so he can’t withdraw money from it without my approval and vice versa. If the withdrawal is for a good cause, like for the family especially the kids, why not?

Politics › Dino Melaye: The Thug With A Presidential Dream By Emmanuel Ugwu by emamos(op): 5:10pm On Jul 16, 2016
No one who is conversant with the biography and career of ‘Senator’ Dino Melaye would be shocked by corroborated reports that he threatened to beat up and ‘’impregnate’’ a female colleague during a closed door session of the Nigerian senate on Tuesday. The act, outrageous as it sounds, is in character. Dino has always been the quintessence of a street thug. His personal and public lives show a symmetrical penchant for hysterics, bullying and violence.
Dino truncated his two attempts at marriage with his own hands. He battered his wives beyond the ‘normal threshold’ of a black eye. He inflicted life-threatening injuries on them with such meanness and frequency that the victims cottoned up to the fact that this husband meant to perpetrate murder in installments.
Only a couple of months, Dino threatened to assault Senator James Manager(PDP, Delta South) in an executive session of the senate. Manager’s heinous crime was that he advised that the Senate risks tarnishing its image as an institution if it does not extricate itself from ‘Senate President’ Bukola Saraki’s trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Dino charged at the older Manager and moved to attack him.
In his earlier incarnation as a member of the National Assembly, Dino fought on the floor of the House of Representatives. The majority of the legislators were angling for the resignation of the scandal-tainted Speaker Patricia Etteh. Dino tried to save her by starting a fight. He was beaten and stripped half-naked. He walked out in rags.
When Dino hectored Senator Oluremi Tinubu and hurtled towards her so that his alarmed colleagues rushed to save him from himself –by arresting, pacifying and taming him –it was the force of habit at work. He had been beating up women by rote. But since his two wives walked out, he had been suffering the deprivation of existing without a woman to abuse.
Dino’s fifteen minutes of madness boils down to forced withdrawal symptoms. He had not had the fix of woman-beating for a long time. He desperately wanted to be a ‘wife beater’ again. Even if he had to do it to another man’s wife. Even if he had to do it in the chambers of the senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
His threat to beat up and ‘’impregnate’’ Mrs Tinubu in one breath is not a thoughtless indulgence in non sequitur or mixed metaphors. It was an externalization of a perverse sexual orientation that seeks pleasure in the harm and pains of a woman. It was the coming out of a closet revelation of a sadomasochist!
A normal man cannot conceive of the intimate act of ‘’impregnating’’ a woman as an improvement on the horror of beating her. It takes a sick, demented man to scream at the top of his voice that he would beat up a woman and escalate her woes by mounting her. It takes a Dino Melaye to lech after a married woman and to expressly ventilate it in a language that pretends to be anything but a promise to rape!
Dino is a misogynist. He doesn’t believe in the personhood of the female human. He was the senator who derailed a reasonable debate on the necessity of promoting the patronage of made in Nigeria goods by educating the senate that there is such a thing as ‘’made in Nigeria women.’’
Dino was the senator who stood up during a debate on a bill prohibiting sexual harassment of students by lecturers in tertiary institutions and suggested that sexual predation happens when ladies wearing ‘’seductive and provocative dresses’’ ‘’enter the offices of lecturers who have ‘’no anointing to resist sexual temptation.’’
Dino threatened to beat up and ‘’impregnate’’ Mrs. Tinubu in order to shame her for her gender. To remind her that whoever she was, he was the superior sex. She was a mere woman, easy to be conquered, prostrated and violated right into her most private space.
The threat to ‘’impregnate’’ by force escaped from a phalocentric mindset that regards sex as a weapon of war. In Dino's world, sex is the ultimate victory lap. Sex is what you do to a woman to trivialize her femininity. It’s what you do to impose on her an acute sense of her inferiority.

Crime › We Will Attack Your Workers If You Attempt To Fix Qua Iboe Pipeline – NDA Threat by emamos(op): 4:57pm On Jul 16, 2016
Niger Delta Avengers has warned that, any repair work on ExxonMobil blown up pipeline will lead to an attack on the oil company workers.
Recall that the group had on Monday claimed responsibility for the attack on Exxon Mobil Que Iboe 48-inch Crude Oil Export Pipeline in Akwa Ibom.
But the company’s spokesperson, Todd Spitler denied claim of the attack, saying the damage that occurred was due to “system anomaly.”
Reacting to Spitler’s comment on the attack, the separatist group in a statement by its spokesman, Mudock Agbinibo warned the oil company to consider the consequences of fixing the blown up pipeline.
According to the group, should Exxon Mobil fail to heed its warning by going, “ahead to carry out repairs on the pipeline something big will happen.”
The group said, “We are warning ExxonMobil not to carry out any repair work on the blown pipeline, if they refuse and go ahead with any repair work, something big and worse will happen.
“To the traders/international refineries doing business with them, do not let ExxonMobil deceive you that the repair work will take three to four weeks, with the level of damage. it will take them (ExxonMobil) months to fix it.

Crime › Fayose’s Associate, Agbele Sues EFCC, Claims N500m Compensation As Damages by emamos(op): 1:55pm On Jul 15, 2016
A closed associate to the Governor of Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, Abiodun Agbele, has instituted a N500 million suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over his detention without trial.
EFCC had on June 27 arrested Agbele over an alleged N1.3bn traced to the personal account of the Ekiti State Governor.
The commission claimed Agbele was a conduit through which the said sum from the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, was paid to the governor during the build up to the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State.
Agbele, in the suit filed by his lawyers, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, and Olalekan Ojo before a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court in Abuja described his detention by the anti-graft agency as illegal.
He prayed the court to award him the sum of N500m as damages for the alleged unlawful arrest and detention.
Citing relevant sections of the 1999 constitution as amended, Agbele sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights to liberty, human dignity and acquisition of properties.
Agbele also urged Justice Olukayode Adeniyi to order the agency to effect his immediate release

Politics › Court Rules Against FG, Discos, Declares New Electricity Tariff Illegal by emamos(op): 8:21pm On Jul 13, 2016
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ruled against the National Electricity Regulation Commission and electricity distribution companies in a suit opposing the Federal Government’s bid to increase electricity tariff brought last year.
The suit was filed by a Lagos-based lawyer, Toluwani Adebiyi, following announcement of proposed electricity tariff hike by the then Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi.
Adebiyi had urged the court to stop any hike in electricity tariff until there had been a meaningful and significant improvement in power supply to at least 18 hours in a day in most Nigerian communities.
In his ruling, Justice Mohammed Idris declared as null and void any hike in electricity tariff that did not comply with the provisions of the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act 2004.
The judge lambasted the commission for embarking on the proposed tariff hike despite a court order to maintain status quo.
“The upward increment in tariff was hasty and procedurally ultra vires. The review was done in a breach of existing order. This again was hasty, reckless and irresponsible. The court has the inherent jurisdiction to undo what has been done by a party in self-help.
“The increment in tariff by the 1st defendant, while parties were before the court and there was a subsisting order for status quo, is hereby declared illegal.
“The 1st defendant is hereby directed to reverse to status quo. The 1st defendant is further restrained from increasing the electricity tariff except in strict compliance of the provisions EPSRA and the procedures stipulated in section 76 of the EPSRA.
“N50,000 cost is awarded against the defendants in favour of the plaintiff. That is the judgment of the court”.
He declared the electricity tariff hike and procedural and rebuked NERC for he declared as executive recklessness, which he said could only breed lawlessness.

Politics › Dino Melaye Needs Psychiatric Examination – APC by emamos(op): 8:00pm On Jul 13, 2016
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, says Senator Dino Melaye needs psychiatric examination over his threat to beat up Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central.
Melaye had threatened to beat up Tinubu and ‘impregnate’ her on the floor of the Senate, a statement that had elicited wide condemnation but which Melaye denied.
Reacting to this verbal assault against Senator Tinubu in a statement, Joe Igbokwe, Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, described Melaye’s outbursts as unguarded and reckless.
“We take it that this is a slip of tongue but if it is indeed true that this statement came from the heart of Dino Melaye, we need a psychiatric doctor to examine the state of his mind.”
“His actions and deeds in recent times have contributed in no uncertain terms to various setbacks we have witnessed in the 8th Senate since its inception on June 9, 2015. The hallowed chamber of the Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria is a prestigious place for the serious-minded, cerebral men and women, men and women of honour and integrity, those who can hold their heads when others are losing theirs, experienced but humble men and women.
“It is not for lunatics, rascals, street urchins, ethically challenged bigots or integrity challenged charlatans. It seems to us in Lagos APC that Senator Dino Melaye has reached a point of diminishing returns,’ the statement said.
The statement added that: “The unstable and funny man from Kogi State has reached a point where there is no other place to go but to go down irretrievably. He can only go down with his likes and not with our own Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the highly revered, honoured and distinguished wife of our National leader, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Lagos APC wants Dino Melaye to move quickly to apologize to Senator Oluremi Tinubu and her beloved husband, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and have the statement credited to him withdrawn without any further delay.”

Politics › US Backs Buhari’s Economic Recovery Efforts by emamos(op): 6:51pm On Jul 08, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari exchanging greetings with the outgoing US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James F. Entwistle. The outgoing US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Entwistle, says President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic recovery efforts deserve the understanding and support of Nigerians.
Entwistle stated this in an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja on Friday.
“I see a parallel between President Buhari and President Obama.
“President Obama had not been in office for very long, but the people had same kind of impatience.
“And I think in my country a lot of people forgot how difficult the situation was that President Obama inherited.
“I think the same thing is happening with President Buhari – to a certain degree.
“It is completely understandable to me that people have a high expectation, they are impatient, they want to see change.
“But Mr President inherited a very difficult set of circumstances and some of the things that he has identified that need to be done – end corruption; reform the petroleum sector and end the conflict in the North-East.
“These are things that even if he works as hard as he can, it will take some time.
“I understand people are impatient; the expectations from Mr President are very high.
“I think we have to remember what he inherited. And in my own opinion we have to be neutral and balanced.
“I think Mr President and his team have done a good job this first year.’’
He noted that the slide in the economy was a culmination of some of the problems inherited by the Buhari administration including poor infrastructure in the petroleum sector.
While commending the President for the efforts being made to revive the nation’s economy, he expressed the hope that the economy would improve as quickly as possible.
“I think he has put in place some things, though I am not an economist, but what he has done with the exchange rate and fuel subsidy and so on.
“I think in a very deliberate fashion the economy hopefully is going to improve.
“But remember that in this age, no country is an economic island.
“What affects a country affects the economy of every other country.
“I gave the President very good marks and let’s see how he marches forward in the next few months.”

Crime › IPOB Elders Disown Avengers, MASSOB by emamos(op): 6:26am On Jun 30, 2016
The Supreme Council of Elders of Indigenous People Of Biafra on Wednesday disowned the Niger Delta Avengers and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.
“Preachers of violence might be infants or non-existent during the 30-month Nigerian Civil War,” the group said,
The Deputy Chairman of IPOB’s Supreme Council, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, stated this at a press conference in Nnewi, Anambra State on Wednesday.
Ikedife was reacting based on the claims by some IPOB and MASSOB members that the groups were aligning with the Niger Delta militants as well as other militants in the country.
The IPOB chief said there was no such a thing, adding that he witnessed the Civil War and saw how millions of people, especially from the South-East, were slaughtered and properties destroyed.
He insisted that he would certainly not support any war because any life lost would not be replaced, but properties could be replaced.
The ex-Ohanaeze President said, “The IPOB group I belong to is governed by the Supreme Council of Elders. There is a faction led by Nnamdi Kanu that abuses the elders, preaches violence and ethnic hatred.
“We do not believe in that. The MASSOB led by Ralph Uwazuruike from its inception preaches non-violence based on the philosophy of the late Indian leader, Mahatma Ghandi.
“If the militants have been blowing up pipelines, I don’t see how my group that has been following legal and diplomatic process will align with them. We have quite a different philosophy and modus operandi towards the issue of self-determination.
“The two factions of the IPOB and the two factions of MASSOB are all talking about self-determination of the indigenous people of Biafra. But their approach is not the same.
“The aim may be one but the method differs. We have not and cannot depart from dialogue, legal and diplomatic process and of course you know we are in court with the Federal Government over this issue of self-determination.”
On the prevailing economic hardship in Nigeria, Ikedife said, “It is a worthy sacrifice for the citizen to endure the hard living conditions now and enjoin a better future later.
He added, “I see the current hardship as darkness before the break of the daylight.
“We have now discovered that the economy was so badly managed before now that it requires some efforts, sacrifice and patience to get it right again.”

Business › Nobody In Nigeria Can Seize My Property — JIMOH IBRAHIM by emamos(op): 5:41am On Jun 22, 2016
TheGroup Chairman of NICON Investment Limited, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, said yesterday that nobody in Nigeria can seize his properties.
Ibrahim, who in a statement yesterday, was reacting to a report which said a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, had given Assets Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, an interim judgement to take over his firms over N50 billion debt, said: ‘’My attention has been directed to lies being spread around by an institution called AMCON over an interim order of injunction she had lied to collect before an innocent Federal High Court in Lagos.
Jimoh Ibrahim
‘’AMCON is aware that we keep a deposit of Eighty-Six billion Naira or 172 million pounds with Union Bank and AMCON is aware that application to collect the money from Union Bank is pending before an Ikeja High Court. All of these facts, it has not disclosed to an innocent Federal High Court.
‘’AMCON deceived Nigerians to believe that they got judgement against me when there was nothing like that. An interim order of any court last for 14 days. AMCON is executing the interim order even when the Judge has not signed the execution writ.
‘’We have since filed an application to discharge the interim order. I’m not in the category of people that AMCON or anybody can intimidate. It is laughable and a wide ambition to say anyone in Nigeria can seize my property! What a day dream!!
‘’We shall abide with the law and any interim order of court even when they are made in error as we are not far away from justice.’’

Nairaland General › Marry Yourselves – DG Advises NYSC Members by emamos(op): 7:54pm On Jun 20, 2016
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure has urged corps members from different tribes to inter-marry.
He said it was as an avenue of boosting national integration.
General Kazaure made this remark when he visited the 2016 Batch A (Stream II) corps members undergoing their orientation programme.
He noted that the essence of the scheme was to ensure national integration, which would bring the desired unity in the country.
“I wish to see you intermarry within the orientation period to enhance national integration, as this would be achieved through adequate bonding in the camp.
“The Ramadan did not stop us from coming to the camp as I received lots of text messages inquiring about the possibility of organizing the camp within the period.”
He noted that he insisted that the orientation programme would be organized and that by God’s grace it went on and the Corps members would soon leave the camp.
“Corps members would not be posted to Ishiellu Local Government Area where the Ezza–Ezillo communal war took place until we get assurances of adequate security in the area.
“You should also pay special attention to skill acquisition while in the camp and the entire service year, to enable you be self reliant and not rely on white collar jobs”, he added.
The Ebonyi State Coordinator of the Scheme, Mrs Gladys Mbachi, told the DG that 1, 932 Corps members were undergoing the programme, with 1, 346 males and 586 females.
“The corps members have been behaving well since they arrived in the camp, though we presently have some health challenges”, she noted, stressing that one of the corps members had mental problem while three others had asthmatic cases, but that all of them had been referred to the hospital for adequate medical attention

Crime › Chinese Man Pays N1.4m For ‘juju’ To Avoid Being Killed By Nigerian Business Par by emamos(op): 8:25am On Jun 19, 2016
A Chinese national, Sunk Kun, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command over an alleged attempt to assassinate his Nigerian business partner.
Kun, who has been resident in the state for 5 years, was reportedly arrested after one of the assassins who he paid N1.4 million to
kill his business partner, was arrested.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP, Fatai Owoseni, made this known on Saturday while parading the suspects, Channels Television reports.
According to him, the majority of the money paid to the hired assassin has been recovered.
Owoseni said, “The Chinese national fellow who is in business with some Nigerians, happened to have a business misunderstanding with one of the Nigerians and he thought the best way to resolve the business misunderstanding is to eliminate his Nigerian business partner.
“He had recruited a fellow who is his co-accused to go and help him recruit more people in order for them to kill the Nigerian business partner that he had a misunderstanding with and he had paid the sum of N1.4 million for the assignment,” the CP confirmed.
But on interrogation, Kun denied ever wanting to assassinate his Nigerian business partner.
He said, “This Nigerian man, many years ago, he did business with my company. He owed me money and is a fraudster.
“I don’t want to kill him but he wanted to kill me. This guy says he can do voodoo for me.
“The money is not for assassination, it is for juju, and no one will be able to kill me,” the Chinese man confessed.

Politics › A Litre Of Petrol Now Sells Below N145 In Some Stations — Survey by emamos(op): 5:10pm On Jun 17, 2016
Lagos – A litre of petrol now sells below the official benchmark of N145 in some stations in the Lagos, a survey has shown.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who carried out a survey of some filling stations in the Lagos metropolis reports that some stations were selling at reduced rates of between N137 and N143 per liter, depending on the area were mainly the independent marketers.
It was discovered that even though they were selling at reduced rates, they were still recording low patronage from members of the public.
It was gathered that some of the motorists now prefer patonising stations of major marketers since the new prices of the product was announced on May 11 by the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPRA)
Some of them claimed that they have taken to stations of major marketers because the dispensing metres in stations of the independent marketers might have been compromised.
NAN, however, observed that some stations such as NIPCO at Fadeyi, on Ikorodu Road and at Ilepo-Oba, Ikorodu town were selling the product at N143 per liter.
Some NNPC retail stations at Egbeda-Igando area and Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun were selling at N135 per litre as at Friday.
However, a few stations owned by some major marketers were still dispensing at N145 per litre, while a few made slight downward adjustment of N2.
An Independent petroleum marketer, Alhaji Aliu Folorunso noted that there had been low patronage of the product by the public as motorists, motorcyclists and those purchasing in jerry cans for their electricity generating sets.
He believed that low patronage had been responsible for selling the product below N145 per litre in some filling stations.
Folorunso, also the chairman, World Global Petroleum Ltd., told NAN that the differential in sales in petrol pump prices in stations were the outcome of the recent deregulation, where competition could force down prices.
According to him, some members, who used to sell between 120,000 litres and 150,000 litres (equivalent of 4 trucks) daily are now finding it difficult to sell off 33,000 litres daily.
This, he noted, was because some motorists had been shunning some stations run by the independent marketers, who they believe could have tampered with metres of their dispensing machines.
According to him, the products from private depot owners are now cheaper and available more than products from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
“We purchase products from other private depots in Lagos and some of our members are selling below N145 per liter in Lagos.
“From private depot owners, we purchase at between N130-135 per liter as ex-depot price. If you add other costs, we arrive at between N138 and N143.
“The business is not encouraging anymore because we do not have enough margins because competition has driven the prices down. Maybe because NNPC has stake or interest in private depot, they are giving them at cheaper rates,” he said.

Crime › Ex-gov Goje Approved N1bn For Dictionaries – EFCC by emamos(op): 1:27pm On Jun 16, 2016
A former governor of Gombe State, Danjuma Goje, illegally awarded a N1bn contract for the supply of dictionaries to secondary schools while he was governor of the state, according to the EFCC.
A prosecution witness, Salisu Abaji, said this before a Federal High Court in Jos where Goje is being tried for alleged fraud, the spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement.
According to the witness, the ex-governor awarded a contract for the supply of dictionaries for over N1bn to Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board without following procurement process.
Furthermore, he was alleged to have paid 85 per cent of the contract sum upfront to the supplier, Real and Integrated Hospitality Company, as against the prescribed 15 per cent as contained in the UBEB guideline when he was the governor.
The prosecution witness, who is a former Secretary to UBEB, gave this testimony against his former boss.
He further submitted that one Aliyu el-Naffty, a former UBEB chairman, also an accused person standing trial along with Goje, awarded the contract the same day and ordered the advance payment based on the directive of the ex-governor.
Another prosecution witness and a former storekeeper at the Gombe State Government House, Mr. Mohammed Aliyu, concluded his testimony by tendering receipts of all payments made to the food contractor to the government during the eight-year administration of Goje from 2003 and 2011.
Abaji, however, admitted that he played a role in the award and payment of the said amount as upfront to the contractor. This, he did, under cross-examination by the defence counsel, Mr. Adeniyi Akintola.
The trial has been adjourned till October 4 and 5, 2016 by Justice Quadri.

He said the state government appreciated the services of corps members and the government would continue to make their welfare a top priority.

“In the same vein, graduates of social science and humanities will now be paid N5,000 monthly, a one thousand addition from the previous N4,000 they received from as state allawee,” he said.
While urging the youth corps members to reciprocate government gesture by being diligent in their areas of primary assignments, Mr. Tambuwal urged them to shun vices that will lead to the breakdown of law and order and communal harmony.

Politics › Retired Army Officers: We Served In States Where APC Lost To PDP, Vow To Fight S by emamos(op): 4:56pm On Jun 14, 2016
Army officers affected by the President Buhari’s ethnic cleansing in the
military have declared that the recent retirement exercise embarked upon
by the military was an act of vendetta and smacked of ethnic cleansing.
The officers said some of them served in states where the ruling All
Progressives Congress (APC) lost to the opposition Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections.
They have vowed to challenge their retirement in court stating that
contrary to the position of the military authorities, they were not given
fair hearing as they were never invited to any board of inquiry.
The affected soldiers said they carried out their constitutional duties
and neither had any business with the 2015 general elections nor the
defence contracts noting that non of them had been invited to the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for any reason.
The group contended that some of the affected officers served as GOCs and
brigade commanders mostly from the South East and South South
geo-political zones, an area President Buhari famously said contributed 5
percent of votes during the last elections and should not expect the same
treatment as those that gave him 95 percent.
“Look at the list of those retired. These are brigade commanders, GOCs
and commanding officers, who served in all the states lost by the APC to
PDP. What is our offence? Would we have forced the people to vote for
candidates other than their choice?
“Thank God, this is democracy and we have a right to be heard. They have
done their bit but many of us have decided, we are going to fight this
injustice in court.
“Some people cannot just arrogate power to themselves and ruin the careers
of other persons who have given their all to the nation,” some of the
victims said.
Speaking in Abuja, Defence Minister, Mansur Mohammed Dan Ali, said “there
is political will under the Buhari administration to transform the armed
forces.
“Of recent, most of the functions of the police had been taken over by the
military. But we cannot just go and take away the armed forces from the
streets. It has to be a gradual process. “2015 election duties were not
our responsibility. Our duties were only to support the police. The
military was involved in too much professional corruption by way of
partisanship. We were not to be seen near polling stations”, he said.
