Politics › BIAFRA: Stop Using MASSOB To Dupe Politicians, Uwazuruike Tells Expelled Members by emamos(op): 8:50am On Dec 22, 2015 |
—Founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike has warned expelled members of the organization to stop using MASSOB to collect money from politicians. Uwazurike, who stated this through MASSOB’s National Director of Information, Sunny Okereafor, vowed never to compromise his leadership of the organization and the Biafra Independent Movement, BIM, adding that the two organizations have been repositioned to actualize the independent state of Biafra. According to him: “They should stop using MASSOB to collect money from politicians and the Federal Government. They should stop giving a bad name to MASSOB by working for politicians. This is not the time to collect money and continue deceivingNdigbo. “We are freedom fighters; expelled members like Uchenna Madu and other pretenders should stop commercializing the Biafra struggle. I will never compromise my leadership or work with politicians. We have restructured and strengthened MASSOB to actualize Biafra. “This is why we have now made it compulsory that before you belong to BIM, you must have served in MASSOB for at least five years so that you will be able to understand our non-violent struggle. We have our structures in all the states of the former Eastern region; Biafran elders-in-council, Biafran zonal leaders, Biafran regional administrators and directors. “We don’t want negotiation; it is either Biafra or nothing. Anybody who collects money from politicians or the Federal Government is on his own. They should stop deceivingNdigbo. Biafra is the answer.” The Biafran leader further urged the Federal Government to respect the order of the court and unconditionally release the detained Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, adding that MASSOB will continue to agitate for an independent state of Biafra through its non-violent protest. “Federal Government should respect the court order and release Nnamdi Kanu. As for MASSOB, we will continue the protest for an independent state of Biafra through non-violent struggle. Youths slam presidency Mindful of the danger Kanu’s continued incarceration poses for the unity of Nigeria, an Igbo youth organisation under the aegis of Ohaneze Youth Council, OYC, Worldwide has blasted the Federal Government over the arrest and detention of pro-Biafra agitators, describing their detention as inhuman and anti-peace. The group observed that appealing to the deadly Boko Haram sect to embrace dialogue, while at the same time killing and maiming the non-violent and peaceful pro-Biafra agitators depict the ethnic agenda of the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that it is a clear case of condoning crime against humanityhttp://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/biafra-stop-using-massob-to-dupe-politicians-uwazuruike-tells-expelled-members/ . |

The Federal Government has directed all agencies capturing the biometrics of Nigerians to urgently aggregate their records so as to provide a unique identity for each citizen. Director General of the National Identity Management Commission, Alhaji Aliyu Aziz, disclosed this to State House Correspondents after a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday. He said that the vice president gave the presidential marching order at the meeting. According to Aziz, all the agencies that are in charge of capturing biometrics are expected to aggregate all the data bases and subsequently give every Nigerian and legally resident persons a unique identification. The director general said such unique identification number would allow every person to have a single identity and can be easily traced. “The number will also make it easy for government to reach the citizen with certain benefits that would soon be provided. “Through the identification number, everyone will get his/her own share’’, Aziz added. Politics › Arms Procurement By Jonathan Riddled With Corruption – PMB by emamos(op): 7:54am On Dec 22, 2015 |
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday lamented that the procurement of arms and other equipment for Nigeria’s Armed Forces that once followed due process in the past became open to corruption and shady deals under the immediate past administration headed by former President Goodluck Jonathan. He was apparently expressing his displeasure with revelations from the ongoing probe of arms procurement in the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) which has uncovered a can of worms that is implicating some top officials of the immediate past administration who are currently facing prosecution. “They (members of the last administration) just put foreign exchange in a briefcase and travelled to procure equipment for the military. That is why we have found ourselves in the crisis we are now facing,” Buhari lamented. The president who made this observation at a meeting with the British Secretary of State for Defence, Mr. Michael Fallon, assured, however, that his administration was taking urgent and appropriate steps to restore order, due process and probity to the procurement processes of the nation’s armed forces. Welcoming the offer of the British government to assist Nigeria in defence procurements, intelligence gathering and training, Buhari reiterated his firm belief that the global community must collaborate more and work with greater unity of purpose to ensure that global terrorism is defeated. He said, “Terrorism has become very sophisticated now. If developed nations can be attacked, and hundreds of lives lost, how much more developing countries? “In the West African sub-region, Nigeria is the main battleground of the Boko Haram insurgency. We have made a lot of progress against the terrorists, but we will welcome more assistance from our friends and the international community.” Earlier, Mr Fallon had told President Buhari that he was in the country to see what more Britain could do to support Nigeria in battling terrorism and violent extremism. “Groups like Boko Haram don’t believe in democracy and freedom of choice, so it’s a common fight for us all,” he noted. DHQ Warns Nigerians On Boko Haram Suicide Bombers’ Luring Tactics The Nigerian Defence Headquarters yesterday warned citizens to beware of Boko Haram’s evolving tactics of luring innocent victims to scenes of suicide bombings in order to kill them. Boko Haram suicide bombers have in the recent times continued to contrive fresh tactics like sharing money, crying for help or even dancing in order to hoodwink gullible Nigerians. The spokesman of the Defence Headquarters, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, who disclosed this in a statement sent to LEADERSHIP, said Nigerians must be extra vigilant especially during the yuletide when there would be more public activities and gatherings. “It has come to the knowledge of the Defence Headquarters that Boko Haram terrorists have now devised other means of inflicting harm on innocent citizens to further their terrorist cause”, said General Rabeh, an acting Director of Defence Information. Politics › Nigeria’s Gold To Triple Ghana’s - Fayemi by emamos(op): 10:11pm On Dec 21, 2015*. Modified: 7:39am On Dec 22, 2015 |
*.Wants FG’s monopoly over mineral resources broken *. Says no int’l conspiracy can stop Ajaokuta Steel *. 13% derivation should go to solid mineral-producing states Ghana, once known as Gold Coast, and a leading producer of gold, will not only be bested by Nigeria in the production of the commodity, but Africa’s most populous country will do so three times over once Nigeria fully begins the exploitation and control of the precious metal along with other solid minerals, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, said monday. He also said at his maiden press briefing that though he had heard that there was an international conspiracy to thwart the effective operationalisation of Ajaokuta Steel Company, no amount of conspiracy could stop a determined nation and as such, this administration would work towards putting it back into operation. “We are the architects of our own fortunes,” Fayemi remarked. “No international conspiracy can stop a determined nation. We need to fix Ajaokuta Steel Plant, and we will fix it.” He stated that after a tour of the plant’s complex which is a city of its own, he could not understand why the government had not fixed it, although he acknowledged that the amount required to do it was so humongous that the government would need to partner private investors to achieve the target. Fixing Ajaokuta is not a matter of the plant alone; it is also a matter of the infrastructure to aid Ajaokuta perform better. Coking coal cannot be got except through a deep seaport; and even when you produce the steel, the central rail line that we have is only stopping in Abuja,” he said, adding that there was need to take the rail line to Ajaokuta and complete the one from Itakpe where the iron ore company is, to Warri. According to him, the decision on what to do with the Ajaokuta and Aladja steel companies would be taken by the end of the first quarter. The choices, he added, are whether to take them over or go into partnership with investors. “One thing we can guarantee is that this administration will make choices that will ensure that Nigeria and her partners, domestic and foreign, create a profitable safe and sustainable solid minerals growth story. Hold us to account and challenge us.” Fayemi also stated that technically, 13 per cent derivation that goes to oil-bearing communities should also apply to the solid minerals sector. To this end, he said he would soon discuss with the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMFAC) on how to include it in the revenue sharing formula of the federation. “If the oil and gas sector can have it, there is no reason why the solid mineral sector should not have it,”he declared lalasticlala http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nigeria-s-gold-to-triple-ghana-s-fayemi/228583/ |

Crime › Court Jails Woman 10 Years For Defrauding Lt.-gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi by emamos(op): 6:45pm On Dec 21, 2015 |
An Ikeja High Court on Monday sentenced a court registrar, Mrs Oluronke Rosolu, to 10 years imprisonment for defrauding a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (retd), of $330,000. Mrs Oluronke Rosolu was convicted on all the two counts of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences brought against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The fraud was perpetrated when Mr. Fred Ajudua and Gen. Ishaya Bamaiy were remanded in Kirikiri Prisons for different offences. Justice Lawal-Akapo while sentencing Oluronke Rosolu said, “The representation that she never collected $330,000 from the complainant is deceptive, the accused could not provide a strong alibi for her whereabouts when the fraud occurred. “I find the accused guilty as charged”. “As a registrar of the court, the accused should have been an image maker of the judiciary, but she acted in the contrary”. “She has to swallow her bitter pill”. “On count one, I sentence the accused to 10 years imprisonment and on count two, I sentence the accused to 10 years imprisonment”. “Both sentences are to run concurrently.” Oluronke Rosolu collapsed in the dock immediately the judge gave the verdict, while wailing, “I do not know anything about the money, what is going to happen to my children.” Mrs Oluronke Rosolu’s lawyer, Mr Bamidele Ogundele, in his allocutus pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy,“My Lord, my client is a first-time offender without any criminal record and she has four children as dependants. “My Lord, the society will not gain if her four children are abandoned without motherly care. “She has been on suspension from the judiciary for over a year and she is retiring next year after 34 years of active service in the judiciary.” Mr E.E. Iheanacho who is the counsel for the EFCC, however, requested that Mrs. Rosolu should receive the maximum sentence. He said,“The crime for which the accused is being charged carries a mandatory sentence of 10 years imprisonment. “In the circumstance, we will be urging the court to sentence her accordingly.” The convict, who was a former registrar to Justice Joseph Oyewole, was tried for aiding Mr Fred Ajudua, a one-time Lagos socialite to defraud Bamaiyi at Kirikiri Maximum Prisons between November 2004 and June 2005http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/court-jails-woman-10-years-for-defrauding-lt-gen-ishaya-bamaiyi/ lalasticlala |
Politics › I’ve No Plan To Join APC – Kashamu by emamos(op): 6:47am On Dec 21, 2015 |
TheSenator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Buruji Kashamu, has said he does not have any plans to decamp to the All Progressives Congress, APC, saying, his support for the Federal government’s anti-corruption stance is not borne out of my personal interest but the interest of the masses who are in the majority and the love for the country. ‘’Our people have suffered for too long because of a greedy few who amass our commonwealth for themselves and their families,” he said. He also said corruption must die for Nigeria to live, adding that all Nigerians must support President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-graft war. In a statement, the senator, who said he was not supporting the war because he planned to switch from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, added that; “Corruption by whatever colouration is bad and inimical to our growth as a nation”. He said successive governments had made feeble and largely showmanship attempts to contain corruption with little or no results and without a sustainable plan of action. He said: “Let me make it abundantly clear that I am not in any way romancing the APC. If truly politics is about the people and a contest of ideas, I cannot understand why any politician that is worth the name would see an idea that will benefit the people and not support it, irrespective of political leanings. I will support good initiatives, just as I will criticise bad ones.” ‘’We must realize that the elections and campaigns are over. Whether we were elected on the platform of the PDP or APC, our people trusted us with their mandate because they know that we would represent them well and fight their course. It is a sacred responsibility that we must not betray. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/ive-no-plan-to-join-apc-kashamu/ |

Crime › Nigerian Military Commutes Death Penalty Of 66 Soldiers To Jail Terms by emamos(op): 11:08am On Dec 19, 2015 |
The death sentences by firing squad passed on 66 soldiers in January and March 2015 by separate General Court Martials have been commuted to 10 years imprisonment each, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Sani Usman, has said. The Army had in late 2014 arraigned 71 soldiers on several count charges that included criminal conspiracy, conspiracy to commit mutiny, mutiny, attempt to commit an offence (murder), disobedience to particular orders, insubordinate behaviour and false accusation, among others. They were tried, discharged on some charges but found guilty and convicted on other charges, which included mutiny. Of the 71, 66 were found guilty on some of the charges and sentenced to death, while five were discharged and acquitted and one was given 28-day imprisonment with hard labour. Mr. Usman, a colonel said following a series of petitions, the Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai, a Lieutenant General, ordered a legal review of the cases. “The directive was carried out to examine the merit of each case,” the Army spokesperson said in a statement Saturday. “It was on the basis of the review and recommendations that the Chief of Army Staff commuted the death sentences of the 66 soldiers to 10-year jail term. “The sentences are to run concurrently.” Mr. Usman said the cases of other soldiers tried and convicted by other court martials were being reviewed and would be made public once appropriate reviews were completed. Background The Nigerian military had on October 2, 2014, at the Defence Headquarters Garrison inaugurated a nine-man General Court-Martial to try about a hundred personnel. The personnel were charged for different offences ranging from mutiny, assault and misconduct to tampering with military property. Of the lot, 66 were accused of committing mutiny, a crime punishable under the military law by death sentence. The charge sheet said the soldiers, attached to the 7 Division in Maiduguri, conspired to commit mutiny against the authorities of the 7 Division on August 4, at the Mulai Primary School camp, opposite AIT Maiduguri, Borno State. It also said the soldiers refused to join 111 Special Forces battalion troops led by E. A. Aladeniyi, a colonel, to the Maimalari Barracks for an operation. “In that you at the Mulai Primary School Camp opposite AIT Maiduguri on or about 4 August 14, refused to join 111 SF Bn troops led by Col EA Aladeniyi (N/9695) to Maimalari Barracks in connection with an operation,” the charge sheet read. Those charges came two weeks after another military court sentenced 12 soldiers to death for shooting at a vehicle conveying their commander in Maiduguri. Five other soldiers were discharged and acquitted while one was sentenced to 28 years jail term with hard labour. The soldiers were also accused of insurrection and firing at the utility vehicle of their general officer commanding, GOC of the same 7 Division, Ahmadu Mohammed.Below is a list of some of the soldiers who faced mutiny and other charges. 1.
