Politics › Ekweremadu To Get 10 New Exotic Vehicles - Premium Times by emamos(op): 7:33pm On Dec 16, 2015
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, will be receiving 10 new exotic vehicles for his convoy at over N300 million, as part of a multibillion naira illegal automobile acquisitions by the National Assembly management, for senators, PREMIUM TIMES can report today.
The purchases are coming despite the difficult economic situation Nigeria continues to face, with workers unpaid for months in some states, and governors considering reducing the national minimum wage or sacking civil servants.

The acquisitions are also coming at a time National Assembly support staff have yet to receive their November salaries.
PREMIUM TIMES had exclusively reported how despite cash crunch facing the nation, the Nigerian Senate concluded plans to buy top-of-the-range vehicles for its president, Bukola Saraki, and 108 other senators.

The contract was estimated at nearly N5 billion. But new details computed after the publication, show the actual amount would be in excess of that amount.

We have also obtained tender documents indicating that the deputy senate president, Mr. Ekweremadu, will be receiving 10 new vehicles for his convoy, the number Mr. Saraki is getting.

The cars include a Mercedes Benz S550, 4 Toyota Prado Jeeps, 4 Toyota Hilux vans and a Toyota Hiace Bus.
The market survey conducted by this paper show that the Senate will be spending about N329.5 million on Mr. Ekweremadu’s convoy alone.
A Mercedes Benz S550 2016 goes for $95,650, which translates to N23, 912,500 and addition of 105 percent (duty, levy and profit margin) takes the total cost of the car to about N49, 020,625.00.

For the Toyota Prado SUVs, each unit costs $73,000, which equals N18,250,000, while a 105 per cent addition of levy, duty and profit would put the cost of each at N37,412,500.
The total cost of the four Prado Jeeps being acquired for Mr. Ekweremadu is N149, 650,000.00.

Also proposed for the deputy senate president’s convoy are four Toyota Hilux SS, Auto vehicles, each costing $50,150.
At N250 to the dollar, each Hilux Van would cost N12, 537,500 and an additional 105 percent would raise the price of each unit to N25, 601, 875.
The sum of the proposed four Hilux brands is N102.4 million.

The last vehicle under consideration is a Toyota Hiace Bus 2016 model, which by our findings, could go for as high as N28.4 million.
The acquisition of cars for senators is a violation of the monetisation policy of the federal government, which debars government bodies from purchasing vehicles for its officials.

The policy instead allows public officers and political office holders to receive 250 per cent of their annual basic salary as motor vehicle loan, which translates to N5.07 million for each senator.

Our sources at the National Assembly said the Senators got these loans before also proceeding to acquire these new Toyota Land Cruisers.
Also, like Mr. Saraki, the 10 vehicles proposed for Mr. Ekweremadu far exceeds the six allowed the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission for the two offices respectively.

Individually, they are entitled to two official cars, one pilot car, one protocol/press car, one ambulance and one security car.
In its response to our earlier story, the senate struggled to justify the purchases, claiming the vehicles would serve committee needs, a deceitful argument the Senate and the House of Representatives have used in the past to defend similar procurements.
The spokesperson for the Senate, Aliyu Abdullahi, said in a statement on Sunday that it became necessary to replace Mr. Saraki’s vehicles because he was using his personal vehicles and older brands inherited from his predecessor.

“With respect to the official vehicles of the Senate President, it should be noted that majority of the vehicles in his convoy are his personal vehicles while some of the vehicles that he inherited, including his official vehicles and the backup car, are so old that they are already developing faults and not fit for long journey

Ghana's Parliament is considering turning to two last nigerian presidents to speak to the nation ahead of the country's 2016 general elections. The polls has been marked out by political analysts as the most crucial contest yet. Speaker of Parliament of the west african country, Edward Doe Adjaho, announced he wants current president of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari and former president Goodluck Jonathan to share experiences on how Nigeria managed to sail through a very sensitive election that saw the transfer of political power to an opposition party for the first time since independence. Already Nigeria's Electoral Commissioner Attahiru Jega was in the country to share such experiences. Jega delivered a lecture organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs during which he charged Ghana and Nigeria to transfer the passion to outdo each other on the football pitch, to a competition of who has the best democratic credentials.
Jega on Tuesday turned to parliament where he paid a courtesy call on the parliamentary leadership in Accra.
He also spoke on a controversial debate on the need for a new voters' register in Ghana. He advised that the discussions must not take a political dimension and met with opposition leader of the country, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Jega made history after overseeing polls in march 2015 in which 72-year-old Buhari's All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated arch-rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which governed Africa's most populous nation for the past 16 years.

Politics › Sanction Directors For Indiscipline – Buhari Orders HOS by emamos(op): 3:36pm On Dec 16, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation to sanction any act of indiscipline from Assistant Directors to Directors.
The Head of Service, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita communicated the Presidents warning to civil servants during a meeting with Directorate Level Officers in her office in Abuja on Wednesday.
Oyo-Ita said, “Federal government will not tolerate any act of indiscipline from any civil servant particularly a situation when workers form the habit of reporting to work late and closing before the official time of 4.00 pm, Mondays to Fridays.”
“A directive has already been issued to apply appropriate sanctions to the erring officers according to the Public Service Rules.”
She urged all civil servants to work as a team in order to restore the service to the part of honour and integrity, adding that the lost glory can only be restored if civil servants adhere strictly to the Public Service Culture enshrined in the discipline, due process and code of ethics.
Oyo-Ita noted that as machinery for the delivery of good governance, “The civil service deserves the greatest attention and that is why concerted efforts is being made by government not only to identify areas of weakness of the service.”
The Head of Service stated that it was high time all civil servants in the country had a new orientation of being efficient, productive, incorruptible and citizen-centered.http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/16/sanction-directors-for-indiscipline-buhari-orders-hos/

Politics › Ekitigate: You Can’t Escape Justice, APC Tells Fayose by emamos(op): 2:51pm On Dec 16, 2015
The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has responded to Governor Ayodele Fayose’s allegations in his press conference in Lagos purporting that APC was planning to illegally use the Supreme Court to upturn his mandate in favour of the party.
The party accused the governor of blackmail, saying his fraudulent and pre-emptive tactics will not stop justice from taking its course in the resolution of the biggest electoral fraud in the history of Nigeria.
Publicity Secretary of APC, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said in a statement that Fayose’s alleged fraudulent attempt to draw the support of the international community to poll fraud was an impish attempt to legitimise fraud, stressing that the same international community had since realized that world leaders were also victims of Fayose and PDP’s fraud by misleading them in Fayose’s electoral victory in Ekiti State.
“Even though the international community declared that Ekiti poll that produced Fayose was fair, the same world leaders have since changed their position after listening to Ekiti poll fraud tape as secretly recorded by Captain Sagir Koli detailing how Fayose and PDP leaders rigged the election, including Fayose himself talking in the tape how he collected INEC soft copies and got them printed to win the election,” Olatunbosun explained.
He added that the governor was running away from his shadow after failed bids to beg President Muhammadu Buhari who he abuses daily.
“Why did Fayose try to pressurize members of the Military Panel to rescue him? After his emissaries returned empty-handed in their failed bids to achieve their aims, Fayose has now resorted to blackmail, accusing the President of trying to destroy democracy and we wonder who among him and the President is the enemy of democracy.
“This is the man that sacked the court and beat up a judge. This is a man that used seven members to impeach a Speaker and closed the House of Assembly against 19 members of the Assembly for six months. This is a man that ran all opposition politicians out of town during elections and launched relentless attacks on opposition candidates during election,” Olatunbosun said.
He said Fayose should explain to Nigerians and the international community what he meant in the Ekiti poll fraud tape where he said he collected INEC soft copies that he printed to win his election.
He said: “Besides declaring in the tape that he collected INEC soft copies that he printed, Fayose also said in the tape that a collation was done days before the election in Efon-Alaye and we want to ask whether Efon-Alaye was the collation centre for Ekiti governorship election and whether it is not a fraud to collate the result of an election that had not been held.
“If a criminal case that is taken to court and the court assumes jurisdiction to try that criminal case is what Fayose would call illegality and destruction of democracy, is it printing INEC soft copies and collation of results days to the election that is legal and a boost to the practice of democracy in Nigeria?”
The party said no amount of crocodile tears shed from one television house to the other and blackmail of the ruling party would make him escape justice in the resolution of Ekiti State election fraud.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/ekitigate-you-cant-escape-justice-apc-tells-fayose/

Crime › Court Sentences Man, 18, To 4 Years Imprisonment For Stealing N28,000 by emamos(op): 2:16pm On Dec 16, 2015
An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced Ugbodu Joshua, 18, to four years imprisonment for stealing N28,000 from Nwosu Amaka.
The Magistrate, Mrs sule Amzat convicted Joshua after he had pleaded guilty to the charge levelled against him to serve as a deterrent to others.
The convict; residing at Ikotun, a suburb of Lagos, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.
He, however, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that he would never commit the offence again.
The Magistrate, after the conviction, advised the convict to learn a trade in one of the training centres in the prisons to be self-reliant and contribute to the development of the society.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt Ihiehie Lucky, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on Dec. 14, at No. 406, Ikorodu Road, Ojota in Lagos State.
He alleged that Joshua, a pick-pocket, was always loitering around Ojota area before he was apprehended.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.(NAN)
