Crime › How I Started The Halliburton Investigation – Ribadu by emamos(op): 12:28pm On Dec 06, 2015 |
A former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has given insights into the intractable investigation of the infamous Halliburton bribery scandal in which Nigerian government officials were bribed with over $184 million over a period of ten years. Giving a TEDx talk in Berlin, Germany, Mr. Ribadu said he started the investigation into the scandal which has now become a reference point in the global war on corruption. The case cost Halliburton $1.5 billion in fines in the United States. Watch "When you fight corruption, it fights back | Nuhu Ribadu | TEDxBerlinSalon" on YouTube - https://youtu.be /l2XxuOY6zp0 Narrating his experience of the fight against corruption, Ribadu said the Halliburton scandal presented a unique corruption case study in which "a gang of foreigners stole from Nigeria" through the $6 billion natural gas contract won by a consortium of four international companies. A statement from Ribadu's office in Abuja, quoted him as stating his frustrations over investigating the case and the inability to prosecute anyone in Nigeria over the case, or for the country to make monetary gain out of it. “I first got hint of the case in France. I got back home and tried to investigate the case but it was very difficult or probably impossible because the companies were not there in Nigeria, they didn't have account there, the people were not there. They had left. “I rushed back to Paris. I was in Paris many times. I put in a request letter but after a year of trying to get French authorities to help us, the investigation magistrate told me that they could not get anyone to translate my letter from English to French. I knew it was a hopeless case.” According to Ribadu, after failing to get Italy and Japan to help, he opted to go to the United States even though Dick Cheney, the then US vice president, was on the board of Halliburton. “The Department of Justice in the United States took up the case. They investigated and prosecuted the case. They placed a fine of over $1.5 billion on the company, the biggest in the world for corporate corruption.” Ribadu explained that in the cases EFCC under his watch referred to US Department of Justice, including those of Siemens and Julius Berger, the US made over $3 billion in fines. “But the sad aspect is this, in my own country, where the criminal activity took place, not a single person was made to face justice, especially after I was asked to leave my position. Sadly Nigeria did not make a dollar out of it," he said. Ribadu also recounted his experience in investigating the renowned 419 kingpin, Emmanuel Nwude, chief executives of banks and the former Delta State governor, James Ibori, who is now serving jail term in the UK. He said in spite of the challenges of fighting corruption in Nigeria, he was glad that Nigeria recovered more stolen money than any other country in the world and got many corrupt people convicted during his tenure. Ribadu noted that the EFCC was successful because, “we built strong networks globally, especially with the UK and the US.” He said the EFCC’s approach of working with other law enforcement jurisdictions to tackle trans-border crimes led the UK in creating the Overseas Anti-corruption Unit. He urged other countries to follow that example. According to Ribadu, despite the challenges and the dangers inherent in the job of fighting corruption, “it's a war worth fighting.” “The world has to unite so that there will be no safe haven for stolen money and no hiding place for corrupt people,” he added . http://saharareporters.com/2015/12/06/how-i-started-halliburton-investigation-%E2%80%93-ribadu lalasticlala |
Politics › Buhari: Why I Sent Obasanjo To Guinea-Bissau by emamos(op): 4:26pm On Dec 05, 2015 |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday paid a glowing tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying he has a strong commitment to Nigeria and Africa.
He said that was why he decided to enlist the former President’s assistance to mediate in the political crisis in Guinea Bissau. A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, quoted the President as speaking during an audience he granted to the President of Guinea Bissau, Mr. Jose Mario Bavz, at the sidelines of the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“I sent President Olusegun Obasanjo because he is the only person living or dead that has ruled Nigeria for 11 years. I served under him as a military Head of State. He has a strong commitment to Nigeria and Africa. That was why I looked for him and asked him to collaborate with President Macky Sall of Senegal to stabilise the situation of Guinea Bissau,” the President was quoted as saying.
While appreciating Bavz’s appreciation for Nigeria’s support during the crisis in his country, Buhari told his guest that the “least Nigeria could do is what we did to stabilise your country. You can count on our support at all times.”
Bavz had said he came to thank the President for everything Nigeria has been doing for his country, adding that he has been looking forward to such an opportunity.
“I am not in a position to assist you but I pray for you every day. I want to take you as my big brother and share from your experience,” he said.
While thanking the Nigerian leader for sending former President Obasanjo as a Special Envoy to restore peace to his country recently, the Guinea Bissau leader also noted that “Nigeria is part of the solution and stability” of his country . http://www.punchng.com/?p=13189 |

[s] archstyle: Former President and APC navigator, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday took to twitter to register his displeasure with the way and manner Nigeria is being run by President Buhari.
Obasanjo who was one of those that brought Buhari to power tweeted and lambasted President Buhari, and the Director of DSS, Daura for harrassing former DSS director, Kayode Are. The outspoken former Nigeria leader also condemned Nigerian senate for wanting to deny Nigerians their rights to freedom of expression. He tweeted, “with the way and manner Buhari is running this country, one is getting disappointed”.
The BIG question is; does this Twitter handle really belong to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo?

The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, said there has to be a regular supply of at least 6,000 megawatts of electricity before power outages can be significantly reduced, ThisDayreports . He said this at the public hearing into the activities of the NERC and Distribution Companies (DISCOS) as relates to infrastructure and billing by the House of Representatives Committee on Power on Wednesday. Amadi also disclosed that 55 per cent of consumers remain un-metered, attributing it to legacy issues which has resulted in consumers charged through estimated billing. While responding to reports that the regulatory body is soft on discos for infractions and inefficiencies particularly in metering, Amadi agreed, he however noted that the agency is not quick to “wield the big stick” so as to build investors confidence in the sector, and also due to the fact that the discos are still experiencing several challenges. He also pointed to examples of NERC “wielding the big stick”, saying that recently, Abuja disco was asked to pay N18 million to the family of a child who was electrocuted and that Abuja disco was also mandated to compensate 32,000 consumers with about N50 million due to over-billing . http://energymixreport.com/6000mw-must-achieved-outages-can-reduce-nerc/lalasticlala |

Politics › We Must Cut N18,000 Minimum Wage Or Sack Workers — Governors by emamos(op): 9:20pm On Dec 03, 2015 |
Nigerian governors will eventually reduce the federal minimum wage of N18,000 or downsize because of the current economic crunch, the chairman of the body of governors has said. The chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Zamfara state governor, Abdulaziz Yari, said on Thursday that irrespective of public condemnations of the plan, it would not be economically feasible to retain the same workforce and pay same amount of money. Governors: We can’t pay N18, 000 minimum wage According to him, funds allocated from the Federation Account could no longer sustain the expenses of the state as the internally generated revenue was still below par in some states. Governors had two weeks ago declared that they could no longer cope with the N18, 000 minimum wage. The pronouncement caused a stir as Nigerians kicked against it. The governors of Rivers and Edo rejected the plan. Emerging from a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House Abuja, on Thursday, Mr. Yari said the governors were considering the nation’s economic situation. “Let me make it very clear to Nigerians, governor’s forum is not the enemy of labour in any way. Rather, we have been working together. But what we are saying, (because not only Gov. Wike but also my friend in the comradeship, Adams Oshiomhole, kicked against the decision)… “What we said is that when the National Assembly enacted the law of paying N18, 000 minimum wage, then the oil was about $118 per barrel and today where we are oil is $41 per barrel. “So, if it continues like that definitely we will find it difficult to continue. We have to sit down with the labour and see how we can review; either continue or downsizing, or see what we are going to do. “We want to find a solution because we have to be realistic that we have so many things to touch. There is infrastructure deficit, there is need for security, there are other things like social lives of our people and nation as a state,” he said. The governor said from the federation account, some states received N400 million, N500 million while others received N55 million. “And there are other issues, not even the salary, their pension is over a billion. So, how can we continue borrowing and servicing the service aspect of our expenditure, or overhead. How can we do that? “We are telling the public that we are planning to sit down with the president and his team and the state governors as a team and the experts to come out with the way forward and how we are going to handle the poor state of the economy in the country. “But what we have on ground now will not be realistic if it continues the way it is without having other sources from the economy and still relying on oil that is being sold for $118 dollar per barrel and now down to $41 and think that we can continue behaving or misbehaving the way we are doing, if there is anything like that,” he added . http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/why-we-must-cut-n18-000-minimum-wage-or-sack-workers-govs/ |
Crime › How Dasuki Aided Importation Of Illegal Arms Into Nigeria – NATFORCE by emamos(op): 8:34am On Dec 02, 2015 |
The National Task Force on Illegal Importation of Firearms, NATFORCE, on Tuesday threw more light into its claims that the ex-National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), among others, allegedly aided the importation of several trailers of illegal arms and ammunitions into the country. The NATFORCE alleged that the arms were delivered to the Islamic terrorists, Boko Haram, a group that has gruesomely murdered tens of thousands of innocent Nigerians. One of the documents made available by the NATFORCE revealed that over 22 trucks of arms, ammunitions and light weapons were imported illegally into the country within the period. The truck numbers that allegedly brought the arms and ammunitions into the country, which were allegedly cleared by the Customs are: “LSR468KD; KTU22XM; XW136RBC; LSD21ZL; 2578A0; BDG182XF; AGI463XX; XK442AB; LSD871XL; GT2131F; GT4813R; EKY361XC; GC9570R; LND692XL; TG7974AL; XL101BDG; TG2322AN; AG1390RB; TG3492AL; XV866APP; X875EPE and AU2080RB.” In a letter dated 27th of July, 2015 addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, titled: “abduction of Chief Dr. Osita Emmanuel Okereke, (OON) by the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) & Sir. Mike Okiro, Chairman Police Service Commission”, the petitioner, Dr. Okereke, who is the Director General of the NATFORCE alleged that because he refused to back down on the activities of his agency in combating illegal importation of arms, ammunition and light weapons, the duo had vowed to kill him. He alleged that on the 20th of November, 2014 at Seme Border, one Col. T Isah of 242 Battalion of the Nigerian Army came to Seme Border with his men loaded in five Hilux pick-up Vans and over powered the men and officers of the National Taskforce (NATFORCE) and escorted ten trucks of Arms and Ammunition into the country. “When we alerted the presidency, ex-NSA Dasuki summoned Col. Isah, who was his boy, to Abuja for purported interrogation but little did we know that Col. Dasuki and ex-CG Custom Diko were hands in glove as Col. T Isah was never interrogated as he is their agent vide Sam Express Company acting as their agent”, he further alleged. According to him, “Col. Isah of 242 Battalions of the Nigerian Army Lagos has always acted the script of the former NSA; the ex-CG of Custom had at about the same period personally gave ex-NSA about 30 vehicles which contained arms were subsequently sent to Kaduna and packed at Ndediko Park along Nnamdi Azikiwe Way near Mando, Kaduna State. “It would not be out of place if your Excellency finds time and confronts Col. Dasuki with the ownership of the said arms and ammunition as the whole incident was engineered by him and the ex-CG of Custom by name Mr. Diko. “Sir, it will be noteworthy to mention that Col. Dasuki and the former CG of Customs swore that they would eliminate me (Dr. Okereke) from the surface of this earth; they have followed up with actions. There have been assassination attempts on my life hatched by the CG of customs and retired Col. Dasuki.” Meanwhile, it was gathered that earlier, the NATFORCE had in a letter dated 3rd December, 2014 with Ref: NTF/R.012/PWM/056 addressed to former President Goodluck Jonathan titled, ‘Very Urgent and Confidential’; disclosed that Col. Isah and a business mogul called Sam Express were allegedly in the habit of aiding and abetting importation and release of arms, ammunitions, light weapons and contraband goods from Seme Border. The letter called on the Federal Government to request the scanning report from the Nigerian Customs and institute a high powered investigation into the matter with a view to bringing culprits to book for a better Nigeria. However, the NATFORCE alleged that the former NSA sat on all the letters . http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/02/how-dasuki-aided-importation-of-illegal-arms-into-nigeria-natforce/ |

Crime › Airport Taxi Operators Raise The Alarm Over Infiltration By Suspected Terrorist by emamos(op): 2:18pm On Nov 30, 2015 |
Taxi operators under the aegis of Airport Car Hire Association of Nigeria (ACHAN) have warned that terrorists may infiltrate the nation's airports as touts are allowed to mill everywhere around terminal facilities, especially at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja. The operators observed that the infiltration of these touts as well as the illegal car hire operators had been unchecked over the years but was becoming very dangerous now that the country is under terror threat and airports are their popular targets. They also stressed that they were alarmed about the ease with which they access different parts of the airport facilities despite the fact that the Nigeria Air Force in conjunction with other security operatives have mounted checks at the major and other airports in the country. The operators also said concerned authorities must urgently curtail the activities of illegal cab drivers around the country's airports as they pose grave danger to the security of passengers and facilities around the terminals. They disclosed that 98 per cent of the cases of missing passengers had been established to have boarded unregistered cabs at the airports, whose drivers took such passenger (s) to unknown locations. ACHAN also said terrorist elements could infiltrate such cabs to bomb airport facilities since they often drive clºose to the arrival halls of the airport terminals. President of ACHAN, Chief Stanley Worlu Dike, who spoke on behalf of the association, said FAAN should put urgent measures in place to curtail their operations as they have increasingly flooded major airports in Nigeria. Dike, who spoke at ACHAN 2015 AGM in Lagos at the weekend, also urged FAAN to provide office space for ACHAN members as the association complements the efforts of government in providing job opportunities for young Nigerians. Also Chairman, Board of Trustees of ACHAN, Alhaji Muili Yinusa, said the military location at the General Aviation Terminal 1 (GAT) that the Lagos airport has become a safe haven for such unregistered operators. "A lot of illegal vehicles operate from the military location at the GAT and when they steal passengers' luggage or property, they run down to look for the Chairman of ACHAN." Yinusa therefore urged FAAN to cancel the proposed 'Pay As You Go' policy the airports management authority is set to impose on ACHAN members. "We pay millions of naira to FAAN annually, so we are supposed to enjoy certain privileges as other concessionaires. This is too much on my people," he said. http://allafrica.com/stories/201511302627.html |
Crime › Northern Muslim Elite Laid Foundation For B’ Haram – Kukah by emamos(op): 11:13am On Nov 30, 2015 |
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, says terrorism in Nigeria indirectly created by northern leaders, who used religion to deceive poor Muslims. Kukah said this in his keynote address at a conference organised by the Islamic Welfare Foundation at the Fountain University, Osogbo. At the event titled, ‘The Muslim agenda for Nigeria: Challenges of development and good governance’, the cleric said the fresh agitation for an Islamic state by Boko Haram could be traced to the promise made by northern leaders to ensure the total implementation of Sharia law. He said, “A hypocritical elite continues to believe that it can claim the benefits of democracy but use it only to consolidate its hold on power. This is what has laid the foundation for what is now Boko Haram. “We must locate the current crisis of Boko Haram within the context of the inability of the northern Muslim elite to live by their own dubious creed of being Muslims. They preached Sharia Law but only for the poor. They preach a religion that encourages education, yet their own people are held in the bondage of ignorance. “They came to power on the basis of a democratic society but they turned around and declared Sharia to generate a false consciousness among the poor that they want a theocracy. “They did not wish to live by the same standards, so they decided to live their own Islam in the capitals of the world away from the prying eyes of their own people. Boko Haram began as a revolt against this mendacity, subterfuge and hypocrisy.” Kukah said northern leaders failed to explain to the poor masses that Sharia law and democracy could not co-exist. The cleric stated that the normal argument that Boko Haram was not a Muslim group was nonsensical because Boko Haram’s aim was the total implementation of Sharia law, which Muslim leaders had promised them in the past. Kukah added, “Now, I hear Muslims in northern Nigeria hiding under the cover of the facts by saying: ‘These Boko Haram people are not Muslims. They do not represent us’. Well, first, they are your own children. You must take responsibility for what has made them what they are today and to the rest of society. “They claim they have been inspired by the Quran and no other holy book. They say they want to build an Islamic state. So, they are Muslims. After all, from the debates of the Constituent Assemblies of 1979, 1988, and 1995 and beyond, did their fathers and grandfathers not stage walkouts, demanding Sharia Law? Was it not to tame them that President Ibrahim Babangida declared what he called ‘no-go areas’ in the debates about our constitution?” The cleric noted that the kidnapping of the Chibok girls and the use of girls as sex slaves in the North were in line with the ideology that a girl, who is still an adolescent, could be married off to an older man. He said, “The promise to institute Sharia has become the most potent tool for political mobilisation and organisation. Till date, the tactics may have changed, but the essence has not. Rather than face the tough questions of how and why over 15 million children in the northern states are on the streets; how and why the northern states are falling behind on almost every index of development, the northern Muslim elite continues to live for just the moment, with no plans for tomorrow. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/11/30/northern-muslim-elite-laid-foundation-b-haram-kukah/ |

They successfully destroyed all previous government in partnership with the heads of those governments. Today, they want to destroy this present administration of Buhari because they brought him to power. As it is now, the President needs help and we must help him to fight these political jobbers. These people are not just in PDP alone, they are also in APC and civil societies. They are trying so hard to fight the TSA of recent.
