Politics › Adebanjo To Buhari : Stop Accommodating Obasanjo by emamos(op): 7:44am On Nov 16, 2015 |
Elder statesman and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo has faulted the incessant visits by former president Olusegun Obasanjo to President Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential villa.
Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Adebanjo urged Buhari to stop accommodating the former president because he has nothing to offer in terms of advice and leadership.
Adebanjo, who faulted Obasanjo’s desire to continue to rule despite being out of office said the former president ruled Nigeria for fifteen years out of the sixteen years the PDP was in power.
He added that Obasanjo lost out last year when former president Goodluck Jonathan refused to take orders from him.
“On the frequent visits, I don’t blame Obasanjo. What about Buhari himself who is accommodating him, sending him on emissary as if there are no other capable hands in the country?”.
“The PDP ruled Nigeria for sixteen years. Out of that sixteen years, this is a man who failed in his eight years as president yet you are asking him to show you the roadmap, that he is the navigator? What roadmap will he show you? The roadmap that he couldn’t tour while he was in the office?”
“What kind of man will leave the government and still wants to continue ruling the government? He was there as president for eight years. He was there during the time of late Umaru Yar’adua. He was there until former president Goodluck Jonathan refused to take orders from him. Put together, Obasanjo was in office for fifteen years out of the sixteen years that PDP ruled”.
“This is a man whose party wanted to impeach under Ghali Na’aba. They listed all his impeachable offences. He has never refuted them but they only swept it under the carpet”.
“When he was in office, he became so dictatorial that he changed the constitution of the PDP to suit him that whoever wants to be the Chairman of the Board of Trustees must be a former president”. “If Obasanjo says he is a leader, the media should ask him if he has the quality of leadership. A man whose son told him that he is very immoral. It is in the public eye and Obasanjo never denied it” he said. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/11/adebanjo-to-buhari-stop-accommodating-obasanjo/ |

The Centre for Social Justice has proposed areas that President Muhammadu Buhari needs to urgently review to enable the newly constituted Executive Council of the Federation function effectively. The Lead Director of the group, Eze Onyekpere, said the President needs to urgently amend key laws that would enable the newly created Budget and National Planning as well as Ministry of Power, Works, and Housing deliver on their mandates. Mr. Onyekpere said with the decision to bring the Budget Office of the Federation under National Planning to establish the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the President must amend some laws that gave specific tasks to the Minister of Finance for the new Minister of Budget and National Planning to function within the confines of the law. He identified these laws to include the Fiscal Responsibility Act and the Finance (Control and Management) Act. The FRA assigns some specific duties to the Minister of Finance, namely preparation of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and collection of estimates of revenue and expenditure of scheduled corporations. The law also empowers the Finance Minister to prepare Budget Disbursement Schedule: powers related to approval and restriction of budgetary commitments, and budget reporting obligations based on monitoring and evaluation and the attainment of fiscal targets. Mr. Onyekpere also said the Finance (Control and Management) Act, which vests on the Finance Minister the power of preparation of budget estimates, before presenting same to the President for approval before sending it to be laid by the President before the National Assembly, should be amended. “A number of roles being performed under that Act by the Finance Minister will now revert to the Minister of Budget and National Planning,” he said, pointing out that their amendments should have preceded the movement of the budget function to National Planning. Although the Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, 2016-2019 under the FRA is not ready, Mr. Onyekpere pointed out that it should have been ready on or before the end of the second quarter of 2015 for the endorsement of the Executive Council and later forwarded to the NASS for its approval. He said in view of the fact the MTEF was not ready and has not been sent to National Assembly, the budget, which should come from the MTEF, would be presented to the lawmakers late in the year; and the new Minister must move fast to ensure that the preparation of the MTEF and the budget were not delayed. Mr. Onyekpere criticised the creation of the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, saying the merger of the three powerful ministries, into a super ministry may make or mar the Buhari administration. “The absence of power and adequate energy facilities has been recognized as holding back Nigeria’s economic growth and development. The challenges in that sector are enormous and could take the full time of a Minister and Minister of State,” he noted.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/193173-nigerian-laws-must-be-amended-for-buharis-ministers-to-function-group.html |

The Islamist group Boko Haram attacked again. Residents of Doron Baga village, located on the Nigerian shore of Lake Chad, confirmed to local journalists that a group of militants from Boko Haram attacked their town on Sunday and kidnapped almost 100 people. The kidnappings came four months after Boko Haram abducted more than 200 schoolgirls from the village of Chibok. They are still missing. The abduction of hundreds of girls unleashed a wave of criticism by the international community and even the U.S. government, United Kingdom and France offered military advisers to Nigerian government. Villagers of Doron Baga said that the militants left no men or boys and that at least 26 people were killed by the group during the offensive. Analysts believe that the male victims will be forced to fight for Boko Haram. Several houses of the village were burnt, according to the survivors. "They were shouting 'Allah Akbar' (God is greatest), shooting sporadically. There was confusion everywhere. They started parking our men and boys into their vehicles, threatening to shoot whoever disobeyed them. Everybody was scared,” said Halima Adamu, who survived the attack. The government has not ruled on the latest abduction. Boko Haram, an Islamist group that operates in North East Nigeria, was founded in 2002 with the objective to eliminate Western education. In 2009, the group took up arms and started a rebellion to create and Islamic state in Nigeria, where half of the population is Muslim and the other one Catholic.http://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Boko-Haram-Abducts-Almost-100-More-People-20140815-0060.html lalasticlala |

Politics › Treasury Single Account Contract Signed Under President Goodluck Jonathan by emamos(op): 7:51am On Nov 14, 2015 |
The Treasury Single Account (TSA) contract that gave out 1% as remittance fee for all government accounts moved to the Central Bank of Nigeria was signed under the regime of Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, a CBN source has revealed to SaharaReporters. Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan Reuters The Peoples Democratic Party had claimed recently that the TSA policy was formulated under former President Jonathan. However, due to weak regulations and corruption in the system, several ministries, departments and agencies of the Nigerian government refused to conform with the TSA policy. A company, Systemspecs Ltd, founded by John Tanimola Osaro in 1992, got the contract to oversee the remittance of funds into the TSA. “Remita” is the flagship product of Mr. Obaro’s Systemspecs Ltd. According to our CBN source, the company built in a demand for a 1% fee to be paid to it for all remittances made into the TSA. System specs Ltd is chaired by a former Nigerian Ambassador to the UK and chair of SURE-P program under ex-President Jonathan’s regime. Since President Muhammad Buhari made it mandatory for MDAs to remit funds into the TSA, Systemspecs company had already been paid N8.6 billion when CBN officials claimed they detected the anomaly and forced Mr. Obaro’s company to refund the excessive remittance fee. So far, the TSA account has N1.5 trillion deposited in it, the CBN source said no commission was paid. The Central Bank source said the apex bank was in the process of developing internal competency to enable it to handle the TSA. "We at the Central Bank should be able to handle remittances into the TSA without having to pay any so-called consultants a bloated remittance fee," the source said. SaharaReporters also contacted the former Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi, who is now the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II. He asserted that the CBN did not sign any contract with REMITA under his watch. In a series of text messages, he stated that it was the Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General of the Federation who must have signed the contract with REMITA. The former CBN Governor added that only Nigeria's Finance Minister is entitled to pay commission on such payments. He said under his tenure as CBN Governor his team kept pushing for TSA. According to him, the CBN's call for the institution of TSA could be found in the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting communiques. He told SaharaReporters that some ministers in ex-President Jonathan's government resisted the TSA apparently because they were doing deals with banks. SaharaReporters contacted Mr. Obaro’s company, but he did not respond to our inquiries as at the time of going to press.http://saharareporters.com/2015/11/12/treasury-single-account-contract-signed-under-president-goodluck-jonathan lalasticlala |

Politics › Buhari Isn’t God, I’ll Continue To Say The Truth – Fayose by emamos(op): 7:15pm On Nov 13, 2015 |
Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has reiterated his position to continue to tell he truth to the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that ”The President is not God, but only leader of our country for a period of time.” Speaking with journalists on Friday, after the Ekiti State House of Assembly declared him the ‘leader’ of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fayose affirmed that as a member of the opposition, he was not expected to be celebrating the government in power.
“For what?” he exclaimed, adding, ”I will tell them the truth. Opposition helps government of the day, helps Nigerians, to keep them on track. Opposition helps to check dictatorship, opposition helps to check oppression. My being here as governor, my voice today will remain by the grace of God. Gov. Ayodele Fayose
“I’m not like somebody going underground for reasons of harassment; it is only shameful that the government of the day is after shadows. You want to be in power, you are in power; you have charged virtually all PDP governors to court, are we saying no APC governor is corrupt in this country? But for me, I’m not going into that; I’m not going to descend into that arena.”
”For everything I say, I say it in good conscience. When I was criticising the President before he became President of Nigeria, they thought I will be quiet after. Tomorrow, if I find him wanting, I will tell him. The President is not God, he’s only leader of our country for a period of time,” said Fayose. Asked if his declaration by the state House of Assembly as leader of the opposition was in preparation for a bigger position, Fayose said: “I am not interested in anything. Even this one that I am serving as governor, it is the will of God for me. There is nothing to vie for.
“By morals, it can’t be the turn of Yoruba, if truly we are into rotation and for me, I’m not vying for anything. I’m not equally going to the Senate. Senate is what most governors will rush to; I’m not going. I won’t contest for Senate. So anybody expressing anything for me is wasting his time because I’m not going to beg for any office.
“I have gotten to this position because God wants me there and I’m not going to be part of any promotion to position me. No, I still have three years ahead of me. Who knows what will happen in three years time; who knows what will happen in two years time; who knows where Nigeria itself would be. So, we should all strive for the survival of this country first and forget about positioning yourself. “Great leaders don’t talk about their political placement, they talk about the country’s placement, where the country would be at the appropriate time. But on the issue of what I stand for and what I say, I have no apologies and with all due respect, I have been like this from time immemorial and I have no apologies because this country belongs to all of us. “This weekend, I will be 55; a lot of people died when they were 10 years old. Some died when they were 20, some when they were 30 or 40 but I’m 55. If I die today, my children will still entertain guests at my burial, you understand. They will equally leverage on my achievements for consolation. Gowon was president of this country at 28 or 29, Obasanjo was president of Nigeria at 37. Today, I’m still battling with the office of a governor and those people we are talking about are still talking in the public after being 80 or 90 years of age.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/buhari-isnt-god-ill-continue-to-say-the-truth-fayose/ |

Politics › Boko Haram Planning To Bomb South-west – NOA Raises Alarm by emamos(op): 8:26am On Nov 13, 2015 |
The National Orientation Agency, NOA, on Thursday warned of planned terror attacks in the South-West region by Boko Haram.
Consequently, NOA, has advised schools, churches and mosques, among other usually crowded places, on the need to put measures in place to arrest any possible attack.
A statement released in Ado-Ekiti by the state Director of NOA, Mr. Dayo Famosaya, said the alarm had become necessary because of the need to be security conscious and watch out for strangers in their neighbourhood.
Famosaya, in the statement entitled Public information on security consciousness and awareness, said Boko Haram fighters may have infiltrated the South-western part of the country, going by the content of security agents reports. He said: “They have threatened to deploy cluster bombs in the zone. These cluster bombs are usually housed in discarded metallic materials such as cans of beverages and soft drinks.
“The bombs may be concealed in bags and for it to have more grievous effect, they have planned to deploy these bombs in crowded places such as schools, markets, stadia, churches and mosques.” It warned the public to watch out for people wearing flowing apparel, as it was the type of cloth they wear to hide their weapons http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/13/boko-haram-planning-to-bomb-south-west-noa-raises-alarm/ |
Politics › Oshiomhole: Why My Govt Did Not Build Industries In Edo by emamos(op): 6:09am On Nov 13, 2015*. Modified: 6:36am On Nov 13, 2015 |
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Thursday gave reasons why his administration did not build any industry in the state, saying it was not in his campaign promise, but that what he did promise was to create the enabling environment for investments to thrive in the state. Oshiomhole who stated this against the backdrop of insinuations by the opposition that he in his seven years of government, no single industry was built at a town-hall meeting marking his seventh year in office, said the industry purportedly built by the previous government was done to siphon government funds. He said of the four industries, namely, Fertilizer plant, Auchi; Cassavita Industry, Uromi; Chemical Plant; Ikpeshi; and Fruit Juice Factory, Ehor built by the previous administration, all was built with second hand equipments at inflated prices. For instance, he asked if anyone has ever drunk or bought any of these products, adding that his administration tried selling them (industries) but no buyer was willing to purchase because of their depreciating value. “The only value of these industries are the land spaces they occupy,” Oshiomhole stated, noting that the same previous government in their usual characteristic sold Okpella Cement with the intention to use it as a base for re-bagging of cement until he waded in, disclosing that very soon, Okpella Cement Industry would come back on stream through a private initiative. According to the governor, “Our responsibility is to get the private sector build industries by creating the enabling environment and not to build any.” Oshiomhole who promised to leave a robust revenue for his successor in office, further said that in the past seven years of his administration, a lot of private initiatives have been built, giving the establishment of furniture company using bamboo at Anegbete as example because government was able to build roads in that area which in turn attracted that private company to the area. On Bendel Brewery, Governor Oshiomhole, he disclosed that the court case between Churchgate, the core investors and the company contributed to the stalling of progress and non-rehabilitation of the company, but promised however that with negotiation with AMCON who has bought over the debt of about N1 billion with an agreement to inject the sum of N23.5 million monthly until the debt is liquidated, assured that very soon, Bendel Brewery would back. On the state of roads in the state especially Benin City, capital of the state, the governor promised mass rehabilitation of roads and the continuation of existing ones, saying that the reason for this was as a result of the rains which according to him not conducive for road construction and rehabilitation. “Now that the rains appear to have subsided and the dry season fast approaching, we have spoken with all the contractors working on our roads and they have been mobilised and would soon go back to site. This is in addition to the rapid response agency to patch up and resurface bad spots with the metropolis”, he promised, assuring that in the next 12 months, all projects initiated by his administration would be completed, leaving none behind.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/oshiomhole-why-my-govt-did-not-build-industries-in-edo/225530/ lalasticlala |
