Politics › Redeem N5,000 Stipend Pledge, Aisha Buhari Tells APC by emamos(op): 7:49am On Nov 11, 2015 |
The wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, has appealed to the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, not to renege on its campaign promise of paying N5,000 to 25 million unemployed Nigerians. This is contained in a statement signed by her Special Assistant on Media, Adebisi Ajayi, on Tuesday. Mrs. Buhari also urged the party to fulfil its promise of giving school children one free meal a day. She stated this a week after the Senate voted against a motion calling on the government to commence payment of the N5, 000 allowance. The motion, which appeared an attempt by the opposition party to scoff at the APC government, was defeated by senators of the ruling party. The PDP accused the APC of reneging on its promise. In a statement on Wednesday, the party said the APC senators were only doing the bidding of their party, which it said had only used the monthly stipend pledge as a false campaign strategy to win elections. The APC denied the allegation, and assured the pledge remained intact. Mrs. Buhari said in a statement that the APC must keep its words. "The APC is a party of integrity and has assured Nigerians during the campaign that it will pay N5, 000 each month to 25 million most vulnerable citizens. "Nigerians should be patient with the APC government as the change they had been yearning for has come to stay," she said.http://allafrica.com/stories/201511110062.html |

Politics › Senators Will Continue To Follow Saraki To Cct-misau by emamos(op): 8:01pm On Nov 08, 2015 |
The All Progressives Congress member representing Bauchi Central in the Senate, Senator Isa Misau, said on Sunday that the Senate would continue to support its President, Senator Bukola Saraki, in his current trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Bukola Saraki Sahara Reporters Media Misau, in a statement in Abuja, explained that members of the Eighth Senate were convinced that the injustice being perpetrated against him at the CCT was because of his emergence against the wishes of some APC chiefs. Misau said it is obvious that the case against Saraki on the Declaration of Assets was being manipulated. He also alleged that the trial was a script, written based on mischief and ill-will, being acted in all the courts before whom the matter had been taken. The senator said, “The impression I am getting is that some people are playing God, believing that they can determine the fate of Saraki and they are using the judiciary as instrument of witch-hunt and persecution. “What is happening is not a war against corruption. It is a war against Saraki using corrupt means to hound him to submission. “This means, however, grievous implication for the proposed anti-corruption agenda of the Buhari administration because you cannot successfully prosecute anti-graft war by selectively targeting individuals.” The Senator added that his colleagues who witnessed the proceedings at the tribunal on the three occasions that Saraki appeared before it were convinced that the defendant was only being targeted because he is Senate President. He said his colleagues also noticed that “the body language from the tribunal chairman clearly shows that he cannot do justice to the defendant in the present case.” He said, “The Senators will continue to support Saraki and even attend the court sessions because of the belief that injustice to one is injustice to all.” He urged those behind the scheme to bring Saraki down to desist as their actions had several implications for the ruling party, the government and the nation.http://saharareporters.com/2015/11/08/senators-will-continue-follow-saraki-cct-misau |

Nairaland General › MEGA-CITY | 50 Communities In Lagos Without Electricity For 16 Years by emamos(op): 2:49pm On Nov 08, 2015 |
Life for no fewer than 200, 000 residents residing in over 50 communities within the Gbaji-Seme Border axis of Badagry West Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, has been 16 years of untold hardship and endless wait without electricity. Since 1999, when a devastating rainstorm wreaked havoc in the community, felling down electric polls which connected these communities to the national power grid, the Lagos State and Federal Government had apparently abandoned the residents to live in perpetual darkness. The Gbaji-Seme area, is a border community that links Nigeria to her neighbouring Benin Republic. Like Tincan/Apapa ports, like Gbaji-Seme Border Like the Tincan Island, Apapa Ports, which yearly generate billions of naira for the Nigerian government, but with residents passing through hell, over the years, to access, because the dilapidated ports access roads had been left to degenerate, residents here in Gbaji-Seme Border area, are in limbo over when they will be connected back to the grid, despite the fact that this is Nigeria’s highest revenue generating border, where the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), rakes billions of naira, annually. N23 billion in three years For instance, in 2012, out of its N9.6 billion target for the year, the NCS at Seme Border Command, raked about N5.1 billion at the end of August 2012. Of its N13 billion target set for 2013, Customs generated N8.48 billion between January and December, 2013. Similarly, between January and December, 2014, the Seme Border Command generated N9.6 billion between Barely one month to the end of 2015, it’s not yet known what amount the NCS will put out in public to have generated. Although, its target for this year is N13 billion. http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/mega-city-50-communities-in-lagos-without-electricity-for-16-years/ |

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has said that it has finalized plans to get external funds of $500 million to get Nigeria’s refineries working at optimal capacity. Group Managing Director, GMD, of the Corporation, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, disclosed this while speaking as a guest speaker at a luncheon organised by The Petroleum Club Lagos. Dr Ibe Kachikwu said this decision was in line with the transformation of the NNPC to become an autonomous business venture and that the borrowed funds are to be repaid over the next seven to nine years He reiterated his vision commitment to make NNPC a profitable company, and in order to accomplish this target, he has adopted some measures including the un-bundling of the corporation, cancellation of offshore processing agreement, OPA, crude swap and other unprofitable business models. He also said two of the refineries would be shut down for eight to nine months for quick repairs, while the remaining, which are better in shape would be used to supplement imports. They would be shut down after the other two are back on stream. “From 2016, we (NNPC) will have a budget and work within the budget. There will be no arbitrary deductions from the corporation’s revenues because it belongs to the government. Other important projects and activities not covered by the budget, the corporation will seek external funds like any other company, which it will repay. We have made our books open and transparent. Our accounts will be audited, and financial organizations that lend would be able to know the state of the company and basis for which they will lend,” Dr Ibe Kachikwu also stated that 85 per cent of NNPC losses come from PPMC because of vandalism, community issues and connivance of some of the staff with the perpetrators of the crime. To check the wanton development, Dr Ibe Kachikwu said he has moved the depot managers in PPMC and has stopped pumping of products in the night. He then disclosed that products are now pumped during the day.http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/nnpc-to-borrow-500-million-to-fix-refineries/ |

Politics › Saraki’s Legal Team Denies Walking Out On Tribunal by emamos(op): 7:12am On Nov 07, 2015 |
The legal team of the Senate President, Olubukola Saraki, has said that. It did not stage a walk out on the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja to protest the alleged bias by the Chairman, Danlandi Umar. However, Raji in a statement yesterday in Abuja, debunked in clear terms that the Saraki Legal team walked out on the honourable tribunal. The Senior Advocate clarified that the legal team only sought permission to leave the tribunal pending when the issues at the Supreme Court were settled, which he noted, was granted by the tribunal chairman. Raji further clarified, that even though he disagreed with the proceedings, he has utmost respect for the Tribunal and never used the words “Judicial Rascality” as was being attributed. “My attention has been drawn to several news articles making the rounds in both the print and online media to the effect that I, Ahmed Raji, SAN, as a member of the Defence team engaged by Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki in his trial currently pending before the CCT walked out on the Honourable Tribunal following the Tribunal’s refusal to accede to our application for an adjournment of the proceedings. “It has also been reported in the aforesaid media that the defence described the actions of the Honourable Tribunal as; “Judicial Rascality”. I wish to use this medium to correct the said erroneous information”, he stated. Part of the statement read: “At the resumed hearing of the case against Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki (‘Our client’) before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on the said 5th November, 2015, we, as defence counsel, notified the Honourable Tribunal that we have filed an Appeal to the Supreme Court against the decision of the Court of Appeal, wherewith we filed a Motion on Notice for Stay of Proceedings of the Honourable Tribunal pending the determination of the Appeal. “Consequent on the foregoing, and citing a plethora of judicial authorities on the point, we respectfully urged the Honourable Tribunal to adjourn the matter pending the determination of our client’s appeal filed at the Supreme Court or in the least, to await the outcome of the Motion on Notice for Stay of Proceedings filed at the Supreme Court.” http://leadership.ng/news/472619/sarakis-legal-team-denies-walking-out-on-tribunal |

Politics › Buhari Moves To Block Influx Of Foreign Construction Workers Into Nigeria by emamos(op): 7:26pm On Nov 06, 2015 |
President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja directed the Federal Ministries of Works and Lands, Housing and Urban Development to urgently prepare and present for approval and implementation, a plan of action for the speedy revitalisation and expansion of the nation’s vocational training centres. President Buhari gave the directive after being told at a meeting with the board of directors of a leading construction company in the country that because of a shortage of competent construction workers and artisans in the country, many construction companies were forced to bring in skilled workers from abroad. Observing that this practice was very detrimental to his administration’s commitment to boost employment opportunities for young Nigerians, President Buhari pledged that his administration would move quickly to address the shortage of skilled construction workers in the country. The president, who demanded a report on the current status of existing vocational training centres established by the Federal Government, said his administration would take all necessary action to rapidly reposition them as efficient producers of skilled workers for Nigeria’s building and construction industry. President Buhari assured members of the board of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc that his administration would act swiftly to ensure that the Building Craft Training School and Skill Improvement Centre in Lagos are fully revamped, staffed and equipped to produce more skilled electricians, brick and block layers, carpenters, painters, welders, fabricators, plumbers and other artisans. Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the proper education and training of Nigerian youth for the current demands of the labour market, the President said the Federal Government would act expeditiously to remove all impediments to the fulfillment of its promise of more jobs for unemployed Nigerians. He also assured the Julius Berger directors, led by Mutiu Sunmonu, that in spite of present funding challenges, the Federal Government would continue to do everything possible to settle genuine outstanding payments due to contractors. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/192752-buhari-moves-to-block-influx-of-foreign-construction-workers-into-nigeria.html |
Politics › Nigeria Senate Urges Jonathan Probe by emamos(op): 6:36pm On Nov 06, 2015 |
Nigeria’s senate has called on President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to immediately begin investigating former president Goodluck Jonathan’s government to recover stolen funds siphoned from poverty alleviation programs, including the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Program, or SURE-P. The senate says the former government must account for funds spent in carrying out the SURE-P and other poverty alleviation programs. This comes after the lawmaking body objected to the implementation of President Buhari’s campaign promise to give a N 5,000 [$25] monthly stipend to unemployed youth in a bid to alleviate their high unemployment rate. Christopher Kolade, former chairman of SURE-P, resigned from his position in 2013 saying the program lost its credibility due to corruption and political interference. Graft allegations Senator Shehu Sani, chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign and Local Debt, says there are indications some members of the previous administration used the poverty alleviation programs to enrich themselves. “This has to do with reports on diversion and corruption that occurred during the last of President Goodluck Jonathan…So we felt that the best way to do justice to this is to probe the diversion and the corruption that took place, especially with such program called SURE-P, so that at least government would be able to retrieve monies that were stolen,” said Sani. But senators from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the call for a probe, calling it a witch hunt. They argued that Buhari seems to be ill-prepared to resolve the country’s socio-economic challenges and would use the probe to divert attention from an inability to govern. They also said the government should look forward instead of persecuting former officials. Probe justification Sani says the current administration promised Nigerians to weed out corruption and recover stolen public funds. The senate’s call for the probe, Sani says, is in line with that promise. “This is not a witch hunt. It is simply about recovering our monies that were stolen. If you look at it the probe wasn’t such that we want to probe Jonathan from the first day and all aspect of his government, but what we are saying is that there are specific aspect of his government and programs of his government that were used as conduit pipe for siphoning public funds.”http://www.voanews.com/content/nigeria-senate-urges-jonathan-probe/3042091.html |
Politics › Buhari Has Removed Veil Of Economic Secrecy- Sen Nwaogu. by emamos(op): 6:52am On Nov 06, 2015 |
The current government of President Muhammadu Buhari has been attributed with the achievement of opening up the secrecy formerly surrounding government earnings and disbursement of funds.
Senator Nkechi Nwaogu who was a member of the upper legislative chamber for eight years under the banner of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made the observation yesterday.
Nwaogu, represented Abia Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
According to her, the past government of President Goodluck Jonathan was a direct opposite of what obtain now under Buhari.
She said she came to express her appreciation to the national leadership of the party for their support and concern during her husband’s funeral. Speaking in company of two of the APC Board of Trustees members – Chief Sam Nkire, former National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance and Chief Chris Akomas, former Abia State Deputy Governor – the Senator stated that those who are joining or have joined APC should be people of positive minds.
She commended APC and the President, Muhammadu Buhari for the mantra of change. In her speech, she said, “l am here to fraternize myself once again with my party, APC, to identify myself, to associate myself with the change train and anybody today in this country who does not realise that this is a divine mandate given to APC to usher in change to sustain change, to bring about change in all endavours of our lives especially in our economic lives is not realistic.
“We all know what has been happening or what has happened in the economy of our dear nation that it was shrouded in secrecy. Thanks to the emergence of Buhari and the change doctrine, change mantra and change advocates.
“Those who have sworn not to conceived anything of the truth would not see this change because even the Bible tell us that it is only the truth that can set us free.
“For us to attempt to bring to a level of acceptance for the President to remove the present level of unemployment, to remove or try to see how we can increase our revenue, to see that we have no other country other than Nigeria, therefore everybody has a contribution to make towards revamping this nation. “This nation is blessed with natural resources. It beholds on us to put our brains and our contributions together as citizens of this nation to ensure that when we train our children out from tertiary institutions, that they do not come out to roam in the street. They say an idle man is a devil’s workshop. “I am pledging to the family of APC that I am now part of APC that is to say that wherever l would be called upon l will serve and l also use this medium to solicit to everybody who has agreed to join this party to ensure that you have something positive to contribute towards nation building”. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/11/buhari-has-removed-veil-of-economic-secrecy-sen-nwaogu/ |
