Members of a Shi'ite Muslim group gather to pray over the bodies of those who died during clashes with the police in Suleja, Nigeria July 23, 2019. REUTERS/ABRAHAM ACHIRGA ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian troops and police clashed on Tuesday with Shi'ite Muslim protesters in the capital Abuja and gunfire could be heard, according to a Reuters witness.
The air was thick with teargas as soldiers and police officers made arrests. The Shi'ite group marched in protest against the continued detention of its leader, despite a court ruling that he be released.
The violence happened a day after at least three people - including a journalist and senior policeman - were killed in a similar confrontation in the administrative heart of Abuja. As many as 10 more people may have died in the violence, a spokesman for the Shi'ites said that day.
A Reuters reporter witnessed the funeral in Nigeria's northern state of Niger for six of those the group said were killed during Monday's protest. A man whose child was killed during the protest said his son has become a martyr.
"The only thing that will stop this protest is for the government to ... free our leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky," said Abdullahi Musa.
"We are not armed. If we were armed, these people cannot face us. It's because they see we are unarmed that is why they are killing us, shooting us and this will never deter us from what we are doing," he said.
President Muhammadu Buhari, a Sunni like the vast majority of Nigeria's Muslim community, warned in a statement before Tuesday's protest: "Let nobody or group doubt or test our will to act in the higher interest of the majority of our citizens."
"Perpetrators of the mayhem will not go unpunished (and) no government can tolerate unceasing affront to constituted authority," he added.
Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) members regularly take to the streets of Abuja to call for the release of Zakzaky, who has been in detention since 2015. They say Zakzaky requires medical help. Live ammunition and teargas have been used by security forces in recent weeks.
Clashes between police and Zakzaky's backers have raised fears that the IMN might turn to violent insurgency as did Sunni Islamist group Boko Haram after police killed their leader in 2009.

I have to commiserate with people like you, whom upon their high expectations was slapped in the face with that poo. Its unfortunate though, but nothing you can do. AS the nation awaits the ministerial list from the villa, little did we know that the villa was waiting for the efcc to compile names of the fellas under trial for ministerial consideration. There was a country. Indeed DAYOODS: Former presidential aspirant, Dr. Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has betrayed Nigerians by not keeping to his earlier promise of implementing the 2005 National Gender Policy which stipulated 35 per cent appointive positions for women, describing the ministerial list of the President to the senate as “compensation list.”
He said “the list comprises of 14 former ministers, 7 former governors amongst whom are persons perceived to be fanatically corrupt and a number of senators who failed to win re-election to the Senate, making the list riddled with recycled politicians who are not likely to bring anything new to the table.”

Business › Re: MTN Retires Pascal Dozie As Chairman, Appoints Ernest Ndukwe by emilas1979(m): 4:41am On Jul 25, 2019 |
Thank you Sir. You are a very rare gem You are a true patriot We appreciate your foresight. Enjoy your retirement ChemBrodar: MTN kNigeria has announced the retirement of Pascal Dozie as chairman of its board of directors after 18 years.
He is to be replaced by former chief executive officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Ernest Ndukwe, with effect from September 2, 2019, Igbere TV reports.
Others retired alongside Ndukwe, 80, are vice-chairman, Col. Sani Bello (Rtd); non-executive director, Victor Odili; non-executive director, Ahmed Dasuki; non-executive director, Babatunde Folawiyo, and non-executive director, Gbenga Oyebode.
A statement released by the company’s spokesman, Funso Aina, on Wednesday, said the men were retired following the expiration of their tenure and in compliance with applicable codes of corporate governance.
Acknowledging the vital contribution made by the outgoing directors over the last 18 years, MTN Nigeria CEO, Ferdinand Moolman, said: “On behalf of MTN Nigeria, I would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to our pioneering Chairman, Pascal Dozie and the outgoing Directors. Our journey over the last 18 years has been incredible, and it would not have been possible without the initial entrepreneurial spirit of our founding directors, and their unfailing and dedicated support for MTN Nigeria’s vision over the years. I could not have asked for a more supportive, knowledgeable and experienced group of advisors.”
Speaking on behalf of the outgoing Directors, Pascal Dozie, said: “In 2001, when I made the first call on the MTN Nigeria network, I don’t think anyone envisaged the pace and scale of growth that we, and the broader telecoms sector would achieve over the next 18 years. It is a unique story that we are immensely proud of.
“Having served as chairman of MTN Nigeria for all of those 18 years, I achieved a long-held ambition earlier this year, when MTN Nigeria listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, providing an opportunity for a wider pool of Nigerians to become investors in the company. I cannot think of a better time to be handing over the reins of the company to a new chairman, and to a new group of distinguished Nigerian directors. Not only is this in line with best practice, which we are fully committed to as a member of the premium board of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, it is also absolutely aligned to the company’s future.
“On behalf of the out-going directors, I would like to thank the Board and Management of MTN Nigeria for their support over the years and to welcome the incoming directors. They have a hugely exciting future in front of them, and I believe, the opportunity to make the next 18 years even more successful than the last.”
Mr Aina’s statement added: “The Board of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. would like to express its appreciation to the six directors for their commitment, leadership and extensive contributions to the success of the Company since their appointment in 2002. The Board wishes them the very best in all their future endeavours.”
Joining Ndukwe on the new board of directors are Michael Onochie Ajukwu, independent non-executive director; Muhammad Ahmad, independent non-executive director; Andrew Alli, non-executive director, and Omobola Johnson, non-executive director.
Mrs Johnson was Nigeria’s minister of communication and technology from 2011 to 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Politics › Ahmed Tinubu And 2023 by emilas1979(op): 4:39am On Jul 25, 2019 |
Public opinion is that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is deluded about his 2023 presidential ambition. For a political tactician with results to show, such impossible dream baffles. Events, however, are beginning to show that Ahmed may be the smart one in the room, Nigerians being the ones who are clearly deluded.
He has planted five men in the new cabinet, plotting his future. Using the last election, he cut down two Southern rivals with one sword: loudmouthed Okorocha has been eclipsed from strategic state power, as has Rotimi Amaechi from access to state funds.
Ahmed is now the most powerful hopeful standing in the wreckage of Southern Nigeria. When he is not silent about security challenges in his region, he speaks dishonestly about them. In both cases, the intent is the same: loyalty to Mohammadu Buhari, and to his own ambition, technically irrigating the latter with the blood of the innocent.
A section of the public believes that power-loving Buhari will not hand over in 2023, and that if he does, his successor will be a Northerner. While Buhari is capable of bottomless impunity, he might not easily pull off certain things. Ahmed has his own herdsmen in the APC machinery, besides the support of a moral argument for Southern presidency. His bullion vans are also waiting at the back of his house, ready to move.
He understands that his candidacy will offend public sensibility, but he also understands Nigeria better than the pundits: the public will rant and shut up. The media, bankrupt except for a few, will reinvent his story. It was Ahmed who, using a topnotch foreign public relations firm, edited Buhari from a serially rejected draft to a fine work of art. So he did with Fashola, thrusting him on governor’s seat from total obscurity. And Ambode, and Sanwo-Olu.
For a nation which operates in reverse, impossible political ideas stand the greatest chance for success. Ahmed knows this. He knows that Nigeria is a farce, that those who interpret events with commonsense logic are the fools soon to be educated.
As I have often stated, Nigeria is a stampede—and no stampede is organized—except that this stampede has a singular direction: power. And, in the last two decades, no Nigerian politician has dribbled power better than sly, dangerous, and pragmatic Ahmed.- Immanuel James Ibe-Anyanwu. |

He alleged that his documents were destroyed beyond recovery, following a termite invasion at his Bauchi State home in 1998. “No portion of the certificate was salvaged,” Mr Muhammad said. It was further learnt that the new Supreme court head swore the affidavit on February 13, 2002, while he was a judge at the Jos Division of the Court of Appeal and before he became a Supreme Court judge in 2007.
Justice Tanko Mohammed was sworn-in today as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria by President Buhari, following a senate confirmation. |

Dunno why naija ladies be like that Having same experience with one, For 6yrs was asking her out she refused. Later when she found out that I traveled out of the country, she got me contact through a friend. Came back later we had 3months romance but my h@has been taken by another. She later marry another and I to another But she is not saying anything good about me and ready to kill saying I disappointed her. tommyken: I broke up with her just last month and I have move on fine although sometimes I miss her but I throw away such feelings immediately they appear.
I broke up with her due to her cunning and cheating nature but the problem here is that whenever any one ask her of me she replies them with anger and people have been telling she is really bitter towards me.
Someone came to my house and told me she said she will never forgive me that when I was sick she was there for me but she has forgotten I was also there for her and my own sacrifices I made towards her, well am not move by such manipulation.
My problem now is that some people are telling me to beg her for forgiveness even if we won't be together but for the sake of peace and to forget the past BUT that is against my principle because doing that will give her a kind of victory and feeling that I miss her.
My Intuition is telling me to ignore her that a time will come when she will realise her mistakes and be the one to call me up, I just have this deep conviction in me to just allow her be and keep hating for all I care.
Please I would like your advice concerning this issue. Thanks. |
