A candidate in the last National Assembly election for Imo North senatorial district, Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, yesterday led a protest to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where he demanded his certificate of return without further delay.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in his judgment had instructed INEC to “immediately issue the applicant, Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu a sealed certificate of return”, saying that “INEC does not have the power and right under any law in Nigeria to review or otherwise deal with any question related or connected to the declaration and Return of the Applicant for the Imo North senatorial district election held on February 23 and March 9, 2019 after the returning officer has taken a decision.”
But in a swift response, the commission said that it would not be stampeded into taking precipitate action or decision that may be detrimental to the electoral process and procedures.
While addressing journalists, Uwajimogu wondered why the commission refused to honour the court order three weeks after.
He said: “As law-abiding citizens we approached the Federal High Court, which about three weeks ago gave judgment in our favour demanding that INEC should do the needful. Up till today, INEC has refused to release the certificate.”
Uwajumogu alleged that there are people working in cahoots with some of his opponent and INEC to ensure that his certificate of return was not released.
According to him, “Some of other people who have been given certificate did not have to go through any committee before they gave them their own certificate of return, why is my own going through this process?
“When a proper court of competent jurisdiction has given an order, how do you refuse an order of court? What we are asking INEC is I’m here to collect my Certificate of Return today and INEC must produce my Certificate of Return today and I am asking them to do that to forestall the breakdown of law and order.”
Earlier, a group under the aegis of Concerned Citizens of Imo North senatorial district had earlier gave 24 hours to the commission to issue certificate of return.
The Director General, Benjamin Uwajumogu Campaign Organisation, Mathew Omegara, in a letter addressed to INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said that on no account should INEC be seen appealing against judgments, or taking sides with any political party.
Meanwhile, the commission has said that it would not be not be stampeded into taking precipitate action or decision that may be detrimental to the electoral process and procedures.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Voter Educational and Publicity, Mr. Festus Okoye, disclosed this when Uwajumogu, led a protest to the headquarters of commission.
He stressed that the commission has a history and record of obedience to order and does not make a distinction between order made in its favor and orders made against it.
Okoye noted that the commitment of the commission is to the rule of law and due process and the growth of the democratic process.

The Federal Government through its Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) is empowering traders, farmers, and businesses across the federation by providing them with collateral-free and interest-free loans. The loans offered by the government are of three types: FarmerMoni, MarketMoni and TraderMoni. While FarmerMoni is targeted at farmers, MarketMoni is for small/medium businesses, and TraderMoni provides loans to micro businesses and artisans. With the TraderMoni scheme, the government provides collateral-free and interest-free loans starting from N10,000, to petty traders and artisans in markets across the nation. The scheme which was publicly activated in 2018 has reached 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
During the scheme’s flag-off in Delta state, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said “TraderMoni” scheme is one of the schemes that was initiated by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
The Vice President also stated that the first phase of the ” Trader Moni Scheme” will be targeting two million traders with a view to supporting their businesses as well as reducing poverty and empowering them.
“We’ve looked at the whole commercial landscape of Nigeria. The largest number of people engaged in commerce, are petty traders.
“They are small traders. Table-top traders. Their inventories are usually not more than two thousand naira, three thousand naira, five thousand naira. The president decided that it is better to give these petty traders some money as a loan, ten thousand naira, when they pay back the ten thousand, we give them fifteen thousand naira, when they pay back the fifteen thousand naira, we give them twenty thousand naira and we keep increasing all the way up to hundred thousand naira so long as they pay back.
That is the design of the TraderMoni because we want to enable those at the lowest rung of the ladder and we strongly believe that is a way to empower them.”
Osinbajo expressed confidence that the ‘TraderMoni’ is the right thing for our people. Our people deserve to be helped, they deserve to be supported.”
In the South-South, TraderMoni has and continues to record massive success. This is due to a number of reasons which include the seamless registration, disbursement, and repayment process. Other reasons for the scheme’s wide acceptance includes its repayment period - beneficiaries have six months to pay back their loans - and the opportunity to grow and get access to higher value loans. These are traders and artisans who would otherwise not have qualified for loans from commercial banks due to many factors, including high interest rate and hard to get collaterals. In addition, some of these traders, in a bid to get loans for their businesses, fall prey to swindlers who peddle fraudulent loan schemes only to disappear after collecting cash deposits from them. To these traders, TraderMoni provides the much needed capital they need to grow their business, and at the same time protects them from fraudsters.
It may sound ridiculous to some people that a loan of N10,000 will be sufficient for any business, the beneficiaries of the TraderMoni scheme will tell you otherwise. A good example is a pure water business vendor. It costs about N120 to buy a bag of pure water for resale. Each bag of pure water holds 20 sachets of water, and when sold at N10 per sachet the profit is N80 per bag. This means that a pure water hawker has to sell at least 10 bags of pure water, which costs N1,200, to make a profit of N800. Getting a capital of N10,000 means 83 bags of pure water can be bought, and the profit after sales becomes N6,640. This calculation is very relevant to Jemila Mohammed, a TraderMoni beneficiary and pure water hawker at Edaiken market in Benin, Edo state. Jemila had heard of TraderMoni on TV and radio.
“I first hear am for news for TV and also radio. As dem come register me I was very sure that this money will be given to us because it is from the Federal Government. Before I dey buy one one bag of pure water to sell, but now wey dem don give me dis money, I go buy like 2, 3 bags, now I will be getting more profit than before.”
Mrs. Ohen Felicia, another TraderMoni beneficiary in Edaiken market, getting the loan will help her buy more bags of garri to sell.
“See moneyyyy! God go bless you. God bless Federal. Many dey come we no dey see. Bank. Bank. God go bless una. More blessing ahead in Jesus’ name. As una take give us, wey e be say we no get, God go still provide for una. Make una still dey provide for us. As una give us dis one, make una still dey remember us o in Jesus’ name. Una do well o. God go bless all of una. I go take dis money go market on Friday to buy garri.”

Daniel Wilcox is a TraderMoni beneficiary who sells vegetable leaf at the Trans-Amadi slaughter market in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. According to him, he buys leaves for N5,000, sometimes N6,000, but with the loan he will be able to buy more. He said:
“You no say dis one wey we dey now for inside Nigeria, dem don make am easy for us. We get internet, we get TV, we get phone, so me I see am for TV o. If I dey go market, I dey buy leaf N5,000, sometimes N6,000, but the money now don come sharp sharp, I go come increase am, if I dey buy N5,000 I go buy N10,000, if I dey buy N10,000, I go add the money buy 20, N15,000. So I go sell more, dey get more profit. I wan tell federal government thank you very very well. Thank you TraderMoni, una be d baba o.”
Keeping in line with its goal to reach all states of the federation, beneficiaries of the scheme have also emerged in Bayelsa state. Ejiro, a beneficiary at Tombia market, Bayelsa state said she had been looking for money to add to what she sells. On getting the loan she said “they’ve helped me and I’m actually going to use this money well.”
For Jennifer Offiong, a petty trader at Ikot Ishie Market, Calabar, Cross River state, getting the TraderMoni loan will eliminate the need for her to buy goods on credit.
“A group of people came to the market and told us that there is something called TraderMoni which the Federal Government wants to give to traders to invest and return after six months. I didn’t believe it, but today I believe them. I thought they would not come back.”
When asked how the loan will help her business, she replied that “it will help a lot, now I can buy things with money, not on credit anymore.”
These stories from these traders all point incontrovertibly to the boost TraderMoni, and in particular the GEEP, is giving to small and micro businesses across the nation. What makes this programme more laudable is that the traders have the opportunity to get loans up to N100,000 provided they pay back the previous loans collected. This is enough for any serious trader and artisan to scale their business, grow their income, and ultimately boost the economic outlook of the nation.
At the 63rd session of the UN commission on the status of women, TraderMoni was commended by the international community. At the session which held in New York in March, 2019, Mrs. Toyin Adeniji, the Executive Director of the Micro Enterprise Division of the Bank of Industry, delivered a presentation which showed how GEEP is being deployed and how beneficial it has been for empowering over 56% women across the various GEEP products.
As further commendation of the headway GEEP, and in particular TraderMoni, is making in promoting financial inclusion, the scheme was recently recognized as Africa’s most impactful financial inclusion scheme by the African Bankers’. To justify his position, Buhari cited the fact that each of the 36 states must have a minister representing it in the cabinet.
He also noted that it was for the same reason that Bayelsa, a small state with only eight local governments, would have three senators in the National Assembly, compared to a big state like Kano with 44 local governments, also having three senators.
Buhari spoke in Abuja when members of the Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group visited him at the Presidential Villa.
The group, which was led by the National Coordinator, Usman Ibrahim, was one of the many groups that worked for the re-election of Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo during the February 23 presidential poll.
The President said, “The Constitution facilitates one thing; that there must be a member of the (Federal) Executive Council from each state of the federation.
“Why I praise the authors of our constitution is that Bayelsa with eight local governments has three senators and Kano with 44 (local governments) has three senators. So, you can’t be fairer than that in the context of one Nigeria.
“Please, try and understand that I appreciate you, you are doing a thankless job; nobody is paying you. You use your resources and time to come together and discuss national issues. I pray God will help us to keep this country strong economically and morally.”
He informed the group that his administration was determined to provide safety to all Nigerians, wherever they reside.
“As leaders in your various communities, I urge you all to take the message back to your communities. It is not about politics, religion or tribe, it is about having a Nigeria where our families will be safe and our children will have plenty opportunities to earn a living and have a comfortable life.”
Earlier, Ibrahim recounted the sacrifices the group made to ensure Buhari won the election, saying there were instances where the members were attacked, while its coordinator in Kwara State paid the supreme price.
He said the members did their work without asking for any financial support from the President, adding that it was because they believed in Buhari to rescue Nigeria.
He added that the group was blessed with many professionals, who could render their services to the administration if given the mandate to do so.

The 2019 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Report has revealed that the number of “multi-dimensionally poor” Nigerians increased by 12 million from 86 million to 98 million between 2007 and 2017.
The report, released in New York on Thursday by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, noted that the proportion of people who “are multi-dimensionally poor” had remained constant at just over 50 percent over the past decade up to 2017.
Multidimensional poverty includes the various deprivations experienced people in their daily lives – such as poor health, lack of education, inadequate living standards, disempowerment, poor quality of work, the threat of violence, and living in areas that are environmentally hazardous, among other indicators.
It explained that the global MPI highlighted inequalities at the global, regional, national, sub-national and even household level.
The study further revealed that the poorest countries exhibited not just higher incidence of multidimensional poverty, but also higher intensity, with each poor person deprived in more indicators.
This year’s MPI report presented that more than two-thirds of the multi-dimensionally poor – 886 million people – live in middle-income countries, while a further 440 million live in low-income countries.
In both groups, figures show simple national averages can hide enormous inequality in patterns of poverty within countries.
In Nigeria’s case, the report showed that even though the national average showed that around 50 per cent of Nigerians were multi-dimensionally poor, state and local government levels would reveal a completely different scenario.
It stated, “In Nigeria, even though the proportion of people who are multi-dimensionally poor has remained constant at just over 50 per cent over the past decade (up to 2017), the actual number of people who are multi-dimensionally poor increased from 86 million to 98 million over the same period.
“Also, important to note is that when compared to the national poverty line which measures income/consumption, a larger proportion of Nigerians (51 per cent) are multi-dimensionally poor than those that are income poor (46 per cent).”
The MPI, according to the UNDP, is the product of the incidence and the intensity of multidimensional poverty, and both are important aspects, noting that any reduction in intensity reduces MPI even if incidence remains unchanged and reflects progress towards moving people out of poverty.

Lovechisom55: The five-man Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja on Wednesday directed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Zamfara, to produce some documents requested by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, by noon on Thursday.
The tribunal led by Justice Mohammed Garba gave the order after receiving reports by the petitioners that the INEC officials had refused to comply with the court’s subpoena served on them and the payment made for it.
The petitioners, who are challenging the outcome of the February 23, 2019 poll spoke through their lawyer, Chief Chris Uche (SAN).
“We have made concerted efforts and we stated in the letters we wrote to them that we have it on good authority that they were instructed not to release the documents,” Uche said.
Justice Garba delivered the tribunal’s ruling, after listening to the comments of lawyers representing the other respondents – INEC’s lawyer, Yunus Usman (SAN), Buhari’s lawyer President Muhammadu Buhari, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the counsel for the All Progressives Congress.
Ruling, Justice Garba said, “I have seen from the record of the court that the INEC Chairman and the Resident Electoral Commission, Zamfara State, were duly served with subpoena issued on July 9, 2019, to produce documents named therein.
“The INEC chairman and the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Zamfara and the legal team representing them are under binding obligation to ensure that the orders contained in the subpoena are obeyed.”
The court noted that the subpoena directed both INEC officials To produce the documents on July 15, 2015, but it might have been impossible to produce the documents that day. Justice Garba added that it was clear that up till the Wednesday’s proceedings, the documents requested had yet to be produced.
He also held that since there was no specific directive for them to produce the documents at the Wednesday’s proceedings, “They are directed to produce the documents by noon on Thursday, July 18, 2019.”
