The Nigeria Police have asked a Benin High Court to remand several students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who were arrested during a recent anti-kidnapping protest in the university community.

The students were reportedly picked up from different hostels following the protest, which was organized to draw attention to growing security concerns and repeated cases of kidnapping around Ekpoma and its environs.

According to eyewitness accounts, more than 50 students were arrested in the early hours after the protest and were subsequently taken to court in Benin City. Rather than being granted bail, the police reportedly requested that the students be remanded in prison custody pending further investigation.

Some of the affected students and their colleagues have described the arrests as unfair, insisting that their only “crime” was peacefully protesting for their safety amid rising insecurity in the area.

The development has sparked outrage among students and concerned members of the public, with calls for the immediate release of the arrested students and a renewed focus on addressing the security challenges that prompted the protest.
