A 40-year-old Nigerian man, Adedapo Adegbola, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years for the murder of his former girlfriend, 23-year-old university student, Stephanie Irons.

The court heard that Adegbola became dangerously obsessed after Stephanie ended their relationship and was unable to accept her decision to move on. In October last year, he reportedly followed her to her residence and took advantage of a moment when she briefly stepped outside to gain access to her flat.

While inside, Adegbola attacked Stephanie, stabbing her in the neck. The injury proved fatal, and she died at the scene.

In a disturbing turn of events, the court was told that after the attack, Adegbola remained inside the apartment, sat on a sofa close to her lifeless body, and used her mobile phone to send inappropriate and misleading messages to her friends and colleagues in an apparent attempt to tarnish her image. He later left the apartment, attempted to clean the murder weapon, disposed of some of her belongings, and turned himself in to authorities the following day.

Stephanie’s body was discovered after her colleagues became concerned by unusual messages sent from her phone and went to check on her welfare.

During the sentencing, Stephanie’s parents described their daughter as kind, intelligent, and full of promise, stating that her death has completely shattered their family and robbed her of a bright future.

The judge ruled that the killing was premeditated and driven by obsession, noting that Adegbola deliberately took the life of a young woman whose only desire was to move on with her life.

The case has sparked renewed conversations about domestic violence, obsession, and the tragic consequences of unresolved emotional control.

A Lagos-based legal advocacy team has secured the release of a man popularly identified as Citizen Gravel, who spent over three years at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre over allegations that were later dismissed by the court.

According to the legal team, Citizen Gravel was acquitted of all charges after it was established that he was wrongfully arrested and detained without proper investigation. His release followed sustained legal intervention after his case came to light during a routine prison decongestion visit last year.

The injustice reportedly began in 2023 when he refused to continue working for his employer without pay and subsequently resigned. Shortly after, his former employer accused him of stealing inverter batteries allegedly worth over ₦3 million. Based on the accusation, he was arrested and remanded in custody, where he remained for years without thorough investigation or trial.

It was during a prison outreach exercise that members of the legal team discovered his case and decided to take it up, eventually leading to his acquittal and release.

With this development, Citizen Gravel becomes the sixth inmate accused of theft and conspiracy whose freedom the team has secured this year alone, highlighting what they describe as a troubling pattern of wrongful detention driven by unverified allegations.

A man identified as Kelechi Prince Okeke has been taken into custody by the Imo State Police Command following the death of his wife, Olumma Chizoba Lucy Akataobi, 29, after an alleged domestic altercation in Owerri.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, February 2. Okeke, who is from Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, is currently being held at the Homicide Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Owerri, as investigations continue.

According to accounts from the family of the deceased, the incident stemmed from a disagreement over ₦35,000. Olumma, a vegetable trader at Relief Market in Owerri, had sold goods worth the amount to a customer. When the customer attempted to make a bank transfer, the transaction reportedly failed. Olumma then provided her husband’s bank account details, into which the customer successfully transferred the money.

Family members claim that when Olumma later asked her husband to release the funds so she could reinvest in her business, an argument broke out. Her sister, Ezinne Akataobi, alleged that the disagreement escalated into a physical assault that led to Olumma’s death.

However, Okeke has denied the allegation. He reportedly told investigators that his wife was eating when she suddenly complained of chest pain, shouted “my chest, my chest,” vomited, and collapsed. He insists she died shortly after, without any physical confrontation.

Olumma’s family has rejected this version of events, insisting that she was subjected to repeated domestic abuse and is now calling for justice. Her sister stated that the family had on several occasions advised Olumma to return home, assuring her of their support, but she repeatedly went back to her husband.

Police authorities have confirmed that the matter is under investigation. Images circulating on social media show the suspect in handcuffs, fueling public outrage and renewed conversations around domestic violence.
