Spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, a think-tank for the 19 Northern states, Prof. Ango Abdullahi has said that the north is ready if Nigeria decides to break up.

Prof. Abdullahi who is a professor of Agronomy and one-time Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University threw a challenge to those who think that the North is afraid of Nigeria’s disintegration into more basic constituents, saying the North was ever ready for the dissolution.

In an interview with Sunday Sun, Prof. Abdullahi opined that the way to go about it was through the calling of a formal meeting with complete powers to terminate the legal relationships between the constituent parts in Nigeria.

According to him, “If we agree that we should live together as a people and as a country, so be it, but if the general consensus is that Nigerians want to go their separate ways either on the basis of ethnicity, culture, history or religion, why not?” adding, “if anybody tells you that the large informed opinion in the North is against the dissolution of Nigeria, he is telling you lies.”

Reacting to a question on the readiness of the North for a dissolution, the agronomist, replied: “Absolutely, absolutely, we are. It all depends on the selfish way people want to negotiate.”

“I am 78 now and I also went to the only university in the country at the time in Ibadan. Nobody can tell me about the history of this country.”

“I know a lot about it because I was very much awake and a grown up person to know what happened.”

“The people who argued for the creation of states in 1966/67 are the same people today who are asking for the restructuring of Nigeria with particular preference for regional arrangements.”


“The South-west wants preferably a region, a region that was at one time under the leadership of Chief Awolowo, unless, of course, you are trying to ignore all the writings, all the things that had been written, particularly in their declaration called DAWN, Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, then you can ignore this.”

He further noted that “Biafrans who are saying the same thing. Chief Ekwueme is my respected leader.

“He was in the 1995/96 conference. In fact, he led the Igbo socio-cultural group to the conference and their proposal in that conference was for Nigeria to become a confederate unit. And of course, at that time, perhaps, there was still the feeling that some hopes still remain that Nigeria should paddle along and perhaps they will overcome some of these differences.”

“His proposal for a confederate arrangement was defeated in the conference. I was there. But when he got the opportunity to review the report of the conference, a committee was set up to look at the report of the conference.”

“He was the one who really worked for these so-called geo-political areas that is totally unconstitutional.”

“They are not part of our constitution and this is one of the mistakes that the country is going through. Geo-political zones are not units in our constitutional arrangements.”

“They are selfish conveniences of people who are perhaps clamouring for political positions, elective or otherwise, that are operating today to the detriment of good governance in this country.”

Prof Ango Abdullahi further reacted to why the North is ready for dissolution, speaking on the indices, he said: “The biggest indices is that other Nigerians do not want Nigeria; so I don’t see why the North should insist on having Nigeria. That is the biggest index I have. And this is on the basis of the recent statements.

It is so pathetic that a courier service personnel attached to an online business platform, Jumia, was murdered at location road in Ada-George axis of Port Harcourt when he came to deliver some I-phones. The death courier service personnel was last seen on Saturday after he came to deliver two I-phones and a motor bike ordered by a customer living in that area. But barely 3 days, the lifeless body has just been found today in a septic tank at the customer`s residence. This discovery was actually made by the Police in Rivers State during a sting operation after some residents in the area complained of strange movement before Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS swung into action.
As i type now, Police have arrested three residents living in that compound in connection to the death of the courier man and the interesting part is that all have explained their role in the death of the Currier man while one of them have accepted that he actually ordered for the items.
Although lets pray that this matter is not swept under the carpet because the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Zaki Ahmed said the Police will investigate the matter to the root.

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday said it would no longer trade the naira at N375 per dollar and has directed commercial banks across the nation to sell dollars at N360 for invisibles, such as school fees, medical bills and travel allowances.

“The CBN to sell forex to banks at N357/$1, while banks will sell to their customers at N360/$1 for invisibles (BTA, medicals, fees, etc),” the apex bank said on Monday.

“CBN directs banks to post new rates in the banking halls of their branches immediately. CBN examiners to visit banks to ensure the new rates are implemented.

“CBN prohibits banks from selling forex funds meant for invisibles to BDCs”

It will be recalled that the bank was selling between 315 and 360, for visible and invisibles transactions, and permitting banks to sell at no more than 375 per dollar on invisible transactions.

The CBN on Friday, March 24, concluded transactions of $100 million earlier offered at the interbank market to meet customers’ demands and authorized dealers were only able to pick $81.347 million after an initial bid for $91 million.

The Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, Amb. Hakeem Balogun, says different reasons are responsible for the extreme vetting Nigerians face during entry into the US.

Balogun, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Washington, added that the President Donald Trump’s travel ban did not affect Nigerians,

He said, “The executive ban on immigration does not affect Nigerians. Whatever must have taken place regarding visa issuance, vetting at the airports, it’s all normal.

“All these things have been on even before President Trump. Let’s get one thing well. That you are issued visa is not a guarantee that you will end up wherever you’re going.

“It’s a global thing; it’s not just the United States. Even with us in Nigeria, we issue a visa to you here in the Nigerian Embassy.

“There is no guarantee that you will get in when you get to Murtala Muhammed Airport or when you get to Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport.”

Balogun added, “The final authority is the man at the point of entry – immigration officers there. For instance, you can come to the Embassy here, we ask for all the things you need to get the visa.

“How much do you have that we feel will be enough for you to stay in Nigeria for the period you’re going.

Niger government says it has earmarked N43 million for the provision of potable water for the people of New-Bussa in Borgu Local Government Area of the state.

The Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Bello, made the disclosure on Sunday when he paid courtesy visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Mohammed Kintoro IV.

“Government has earmarked N43 million for water supply project in New-Bussa very soon you will see the contractor on site.

‘’Very soon, you will see the contractor on site,’’ he said.

Bello told the traditional ruler that he was on midterm assessment tour of the state to ensure fulfillment of his campaign promises to the people.

He commended the emir for ensuring peaceful coexistence of the people of the emirate and urged him to continue the good work.

The emir, while receiving the governor, appealed to the state government to provide portable water for the people of the area to check water born diseases among others.

He said, “We want you to urgently intervene in solving the perennial water scarcity in our Emirate’’.

He said that despite the presence of Kainji dam in New-Bussa, the people area faced hardship due to lack of portable water supply.

The emir also appealed to the state government to assist the people in drilling boreholes, adding that the Kainji dam in the area had affected all traditional water sources for the people.

President Muhammadu Buhari has canceled his visit to the Sambisa Forest, the former head quarter of Boko Haram sect.

Buhari was initially scheduled to declare open the Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship holding in Sambisa forest on Monday, March 27.

The minister of defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, will now represent the President at the event, Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai disclosed this on Saturday, March 25.

No concrete reason was given for the cancellation.

Speaking to newsmen in Maiduguri, Buratai said Sambisa forest was chosen for the event to consolidate Nigerian Army’s grip on the area.

He said:

“We have been in the north-east, fighting the Boko Haram terrorists, and you know the significance of the Sambisa forest to them.
“It used to be one of their centres; in fact, we suspect that their command and control centre was located there before its eventual capture.

“We also want the place to be dominated by our troops and also to get firm control, so that we will continue to dominate the area.”
The army chief said the championship was part of the training activities of the Nigerian Army, aimed at sharpening marksmanship of its personnel.

“It is a championship among the formations of the Nigerian Army.
“The objective of the event is to sharpen the marksmanship skills of the army personnel,” he added.
If Buhari’s schedule was not changed, the Sambisa trip would have been the first time he would go outside the presidential villa in Abuja since he returned to the country after a 49-day medical vacation in the UK.

Buhari would have also been the first President to visit the former stronghold of the terrorists.

President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed the reason he did not allow governors to visit him all through his 49-day medical vacation in the United Kingdom.

Apart from Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun, no governor visited Buhari during his vacation.

Speaking on Thursday at the national economic council meeting chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Buhari said he stopped governors from coming to see him because he did not want “government to move to London”.

Buhari, who went round the council chambers to greet the governors one after another, apologized to them for over the development.



“I apologize to the governors for barring visits while I was away. I didn’t want government to move to London; I wanted it to remain in Abuja and I am glad it did,” he said.

He thanked them profusely for their display of “love and respect” to him, and commended them for working together.

The president said he was moved by how governors, irrespective of political differences charged their citizens to pray in mosques and churches for his well-being.

After narrating his experience while in London, Buhari noted the suggestion by the governors for him to add more rest, but insisted that he would be relentless in the pursuit of the interest of the Nigerian people at all times.

This, according to him, was the only way to show his gratitude to the people who, he said, “had given so much to me. I was overwhelmed by the celebration of my return all across the country.”

High profile politicians like Senate President Bukola Saraki; Ahmad Lawan, majority leader of the senate; Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives; Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC); and Bisi Akande, former governor of Osun state, were among those who privileged to visit Buhari at the Abuja House in London.

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) says Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is yet to remit 15.8 billion dollars collected from Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to the Federation account, in spite of the report submitted to the Federal Government.

Mr Peter Ogbobine, Director Legal, NEITI, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday that the figure was the accumulation from 2000 to 2014.

He observed that although NEITI had presented a report to that effect to the Federal government, no action had been taken against NNPC.

“When LNG started operating, it paid dividend to the NNPC but the corporation was claiming that it was supposed to be the owner of the shares in LNG and not the Federal Government.

“When the LNG pays the money to the NNPC, it used some of it to run its operations.

“But we are saying no; that this money, once it is paid to them by LNG, it should go straight to the Federation Account and it has been accumulating over the years.

“ We always bring it to the burner anywhere we go, that this money has to be remitted to the federation account,’’ Ogbobine said.

The director, however, called on the Federal Government to compel NNPC to remit the amount into the federation account for the benefit of all Nigerians.

NEITI is set to establish an Open Contracting Data Standard platform for procurement of goods and services, especially in the oil and gas sector.

The initiative also ensures transparency in procurement process through the whole value chain of extractive sector, down to exploration, mining, revenue generated and how it is spent.

Following a series of investigations into his affairs, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confiscated about 220 flats, located in 20 estates, allegedly belonging to one Sanusi Mohammed.

Sanusi, a former aide to ex-Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state, also had in one of his apartments located at GRA, Bauchi, 165 rounds of ammunition, a pump action rifle and other weapons.

Punch quoted a source as saying "The ICPC made the discovery following a tip-off by a whistle-blower".

According to the source, “About 10 days ago, we received a tip-off from a whistle-blower about the lifestyle of one Sanusi Mohammed, a former aide to former Bauchi Governor, Isa Yuguda.

“We traced 220 flats in 20 estates to him. The houses range from two-bedroom to three-bedroom flats.

“Inside some of the properties, we discovered four sophisticated guns with 165 rounds of ammunition, five exotic cars and 15 new air conditioners.

“We believe the air conditioners were donated to the Bauchi State Government by China.

“We also recovered some cash as well as 25 designer watches and 20 bales of brocade.”

It was learnt that Mohammed was arrested by the ICPC and quizzed but was later released on administrative bail.

Spokesperson for the ICPC, Mrs. Rasheedat Okoduwa, when contacted said she could not speak on the matter.

She said, “According to the ICPC Act, we are not allowed to divulge details of investigation. I cannot deny or confirm any story. In any case, anyone who is under investigation is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.”

Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) also sealed a multi-million naira mansion belonging to Yugusa ‎at Sir Kashim Ibrahim Street, GRA, Bauchi.

A statement issued on Saturday, October 22, 2016, by the special assistant to current Bauchi state governor on communications Shamsuddeen Lukman Abubakar, informed that Yuguda’s multi-million naira mansion at Sir Kashim Ibrahim street, GRA Bauchi was visited by men of the anti-graft agency on Friday, October 21.

"This new development might not be unconnected with the series of complaints and petitions filed against the former governor by the current Bauchi State government under Governor Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar to the EFCC," he said.

Twenty four ships laden with petroleum products, food items and other goods are expected to arrive Apapa and Tin-Can Island ports in Lagos from March 14 to March 25.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) stated this in its publication – `Shipping Position’, – a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

NAN reports that seven of the expected ships would berth with petrol.

NPA said that the remaining 17 ships contained buck wheat, general cargoes, steel products, diesel, crude palm olein, soya bulk corn, gypsum, empty containers and containers laden with goods.

The document noted that seven ships had arrived the ports, waiting to berth with bulk fertiliser, crude palm olein and petrol.

NAN reports that 19 other ships are at the ports discharging empty containers, bulk wheat, containers, steel products, bulk fertiliser, soya bean, soda ash, bulk sugar, containers and petrol. (NAN)

Acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, is scheduled to appear before the senate tomorrow Wednesday March 15th, for screening. The senate rejected Magu’s nomination on December 15th last year following a a security report by the DG of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, that accused Magu of high-handness and alleged involvement in some corrupt practices. President Buhari resubmitted Magu’s name for screening to the senate in January this year.

The Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday heard that former Petroleum Resources Minister Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke allegedly shared $115,010,000 (about N37 billion) among individuals in 36 states.

Some who allegedly received the money were a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mohammed Dele Belgore and a former Minister of National Planning Prof. Abubakar Suleiman, who received N450million in cash, the court heard

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Belgore and Suleiman yesterday on an amended charge in which Mrs. Alison-Madueke was included as a defendant.

She was absent in court. EFCC said she was “at large”.

The first prosecution witness, Mr. Timothy Olaobaju, a banker, said Mrs. Alison-Madueke lodged the sum in a bank and gave instructions that it should be converted to naira and shared.

Suleiman had claimed in a statement after he was first arraigned on February 8 that the N450million was part of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign fund, which came from oil marketers.

He claimed the cash was part of voluntary donations made to the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan by some undisclosed marketers.

The ex-engineer also said neither him nor Belgore benefited from the money.

Suleiman made the clarifications against the backdrop of his arraignment, adding that the EFCC had no business investigating private donations.

But testifying before Justice Rilwan Aikawa, Olaobaju said the money came from Mrs. Alison-Madueke.

He spoke while presenting evidence after Belgore and Sulaiman pleaded not guilty to the amended five-count charge.

Led in evidence by the EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness said in April 2014, his bank’s managing director gave a directive that certain companies and individuals would pay into an account with the bank.

“The purpose of the payment was not disclosed. Over the period, thereafter, some amounts were paid money into the account. The funds were deposited in dollars. The total sum was $115,010,000.

“On March 27, 2015, there was an instruction from the former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, through our MD, that the fund in the account should be converted to naira and paid to certain individuals.

“The funds were paid according to Mrs. Alison-Madueke’s instructions. The names of the defendants (Belgore and Sulaiman) were on the list sent to our branch. The money was paid in about 36 states of the federation,” the witness said.

Olaobaju said although the defendants were not the bank’s customers, the instruction was that they should be paid.

“The instruction was that the sum of N450million should be paid to Mr. Dele Belgore (SAN) and Prof. Abubakar Suleiman.

“They both received the money and filled the Receipt of Payment as evidence of receipt of the money and acknowledgment of same,” the witness said.

Olaobaju said Belgore and Sulaiman signed separate receipts for the N450 million on March 27, 2015. The receipts were admitted in evidence as Exhibits 1 and 1A.

The witness said no cheque was issued in favour of Belgore and Sulaiman, nor was the money paid into any account.

“To my knowledge, the N450million was not credited into any account,” he said.

Sulaiman, a professor of Political Science and International Relations, and Belgore, a former governorship aspirant in Kwara State, were accused of conspiring between themselves to commit the offence on March 27, 2015.

EFCC accused them of conspiring to take possession of the N450million, which they reasonably ought to have known was part of proceeds of an unlawful act.

The commission said they committed the alleged offence contrary to Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012.
In the second count, EFCC said they “directly took possession of the sum”; in the third count, the defendants were accused of conspiring to make cash payment of N450 million, which “exceeded the amount authorised by law without going through a financial institution”.

The alleged offence, EFCC said, was contrary to Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 16(2) (b) of the same Act.

In the fourth and fifth counts, they were accused of making cash payment of N450 million to Sheriff Shagaya without going through a financial institution.

The sum, the prosecution said, exceeded the amount authorised by law and is contrary to Section 1(a), Section 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.

Belgore and Suleiman pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

Their trial continues today.

2 suspected suicide bombers killed in Maiduguri
The Nigerian Army has rescued 211 civilians held captive by the Boko Haram terrorists at Cingal Murye and Maja villages in Northern Borno on Saturday.

Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, the Director Army Public Relations, said in a statement on Sunday that troops of 22 Brigade Garrison, Operation Lafiya Dole, rescued the victims during an operation in the villages.

The statement said that one terrorist was neutralised while 11 bicycles were recovered from the fleeing terrorists.

“In addition, the patrol team escorted two heavy duty trucks and 18 pickup vans to recover Internally Displaced Persons’ food stuff from Mala Maja,’’ it added.


Two suspected female suicide bombers were shot dead by security agents in Maiduguri on Saturday.

A statement by the spokesman of Police Command in Borno disclosed that the bombers were shot when they attempted to enter Maiduguri through the Umarari in Molai, near Damboa road.

“On Saturday at about 20:45hrs, two female suspected suicide bombers, of about 18 years of age, attempted to enter Maiduguri through Umarari in Molai General Area which is about 9 Kilometres to the township.

“They were sighted by local vigilantes- the Civilian JTF- and consequently shot dead by security personnel on duty at the area,’’ it said.

The statement added that only the two bombers died in the incident.

“The police Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was mobilised to the scene to render the unexploded improvised explosive device safe, while normalcy has been restored to the area,’’ it said.
