The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged prospective candidates for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to crosscheck the data on their registration forms for the last time on May 6. The board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos. The call comes ahead of the 2017 UTME scheduled for May 13 across 633 centres nationwide. NAN reports that registration of candidates for the examination was closed by the board by 12 midnight on Friday, May 5. According to Benjamin, the call for the crosschecking of data by prospective candidates was to ensure total inclusiveness. He added that the board intended to ensure that no candidate was left out during the examination due to one reason or the other. “All candidates who desire to do any change on their registration details are urged to do so today as the platform closes finally by 9 p.m. of Saturday May 6. “We are giving all the candidates the last chance to ensure that everyone is carried along and provided with equal opportunity. “We also want to avoid a situation whereby candidates will have cause to complain of one incident or the other just before the commencement of the examination,’’ Benjamin said. Cristiano Ronaldo went on a rampage against Atletico Madrid, netting a hat trick as Real Madrid battered their neighbors 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. With his seventh career hat trick, Ronaldo went level with Lionel Messi for most ever Champions League tripletas, leaving the eternal rivals deadlocked yet again, with their nearest competitors nowhere within sight. Ronaldo and Messi aren’t the only players to grab the goals in bunches though. See the full list of other players that have scored multiple Champions League hat tricks. Robert Lewandowski – 2 Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has netted two hat tricks in his Champions League career, and for two different teams. His first one helped make his name in the 2012-13 semifinal as his four goals helped Borussia Dortmund down Real Madrid 4-1. His second came after his move to Bayern Munich, when he grabbed three in a 5-0 group stage win against Dinamo Zagreb in 2015-16. Ruud van Nistelrooy – 2 Ruud van Nistelrooy got his first hat trick during Manchester United’s fabled treble season in 1998-99. Of course, he was playing for PSV Eindhoven back then, but his group stage hat trick helped them beat HJK Helsinki 3-1, and when he did make the move to United, he made it count to the tune of four goals as they rolled past Sparta Prague, 4-1, in 2004-05. Michael Owen – 2 Michael Owen’s first career Champions League hat trick came in 2002-03 in a 3-1 Liverpol win against Spartak Moscow in the group stage. His second came after his switch to rivals Manchester United, netting all three as the Red Devils beat Wolfsburg 3-1 in the 2008-09 group stage.

In previous posts, we shared some of the 2017 JAMB Mock Exam experiences of candidates that wrote the exam. The main 2017 UTME starts 13th May and we wish to use this avenue share some tips that we believe will help you quickly overcome any challenges you may experience in the main examination. Best Tips for Writing 2017 UTME With JAMB’s New Technology A new technology has been introduced by JAMB and candidates who wrote the Mock exam have gotten a taste of it. You can now use both the Computer Keyboard and the Mouse (or track-pad for laptops) while writing your exam. 1. Using the Keyboard If you are using the keyboard, here are the most important keys: N – To move to the next question P – To go back to the previous question A – To select option A on a question B – To select option B on a question C – To select option C on a question D – To select option D on a question S – To submit your exam (Be Careful with this key) R – To Cancel Submit (and RETURN) Please read the instructions properly before starting your exam because all the above will still be stated before you start the exam. Please note however, that there are some things that the Keyboard method does not offer you. In this case, you must use your Mouse (or track-pad). Some of these things include: Switching from one subject to another. If you want to answer a particular subject before going to another, you would need to use the mouse to select a subject. Using the on-screen calculator at the top right corner of your screen. If you want to use the calculator, you will also need to select it with your mouse. 2. Questions Format There will be 180 questions: 60 for English, 40 for each of the other subjects. Use of English will now contain 1 comprehension passage (with about 6 questions) and about 8 to 10 questions from the Newly introduced Novel “In Dependence”. According to reports from candidates that wrote the Mock exam, the questions from the Novel are deep and are different from any questions you have seen online, so try to read the book properly. The time stated for the exam is 120 Minutes (2 hours). 3. Hanging Screens This is an important tip to note. Press F5 if your screen hangs. Candidates also complained about hanging of the JAMB CBT interface while taking the exam. According to some other reports from candidates, you won’t be able to click on anything, but your TIME will be counting down. The solutions that worked was pressing F5 on the keyboard. You will see this key at the top keys of the keyboard. If you don’t know how to do this during the exam, please call the attention of the examiner. Don’t be afraid to do this. |
MR Ikpe Obong, Secretary-General, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), said on Tuesday that encouraging teachers to obtain professional certificate would help to eliminate quackery from the nation’s educational system. Obong in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja said the union was collaborating with Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria to ensure that nobody below NCE is allowed to teach. “Recently we held a joint meeting between the NUT and Teachers Registration Council to see how we can collaborate and ensure that teachers are duly registered. “The meeting has been very useful because teachers’ response is ongoing and very positive. “Again ever since the coming on board of the TRCN, we have been in the vanguard of ensuring that only those that are professionals should teach and nobody below NCE should teach. “Those that pass through the due training are the ones that should be employed to teach and we will continue to maintain that stand,’’ he said. Obong, however, observed that while the union continued to push for professionalism in teaching, the employers of teachers are not helping matters. “While we continue to move forward we realise that some employers are not cooperating with us on that policy. “For instance, at the federal level the ongoing exercise of the government; that is recruiting 500,000, teachers, government did not consider professionalism. “Government was interested in recruiting whoever that is available, be he or she a lawyer, an engineer, and so on to come into the system and teach. “They will only be given six weeks’ training and then send them to school which is unprofessional,’’ he noted. He said that if the government that made the law could flout it, “one can imagine what will happen to the private proprietors of schools. According to him, these proprietors established those schools purely for economic gains, therefore, if they are able to get a teacher that is ready to take low salary better for them. He noted that employing teachers with low qualification in order to pay low salary might be beneficial to the proprietors but dangerous to the education system. The secretary-general, nevertheless, advised that stakeholders in the education sector should always consider professional qualification before recruiting teachers so that teaching and learning can be mutually beneficial and effective. Nigeria needed 1,320,135 teachers to meet the demands of the basic education in 2015 but currently the TRCN has registered 1.6 million as professional teachers. The Federal Government is also contemplating the sack of unregistered and non-professional teachers from the classrooms by 2018. The National Confraternity of Christian Mothers (NCCM), says it is will build a N600 million female hostel at the Catholic-owned Veritas University, Abuja. At the event, which doubled as the launch of the hostel project, the President of the NCCM, Mrs Marcella Cole, described the project as ordained by God. She called for support from well-meaning Nigerians to make the project a reality. Cole expressed optimism that the project would be realised with the right support and trust. “The bishop of Nigeria has asked us to build a female hostel at the Veritas University. “As we launch the project today, which will be an ongoing event until our target is realised, we plead with you all for support and contributions towards the take-off of the project. “It is truly a huge and gigantic project and we know that as we trust in God, He will build the house as He has already ordained,’’ Cole said. She congratulated the over 100 awardees and urged them to continue to give more to the society. On her part, the President of the Benin Archdiocesan, Dr Stella Usifoh, said the NCCM was “once again blazing the trail and we are moving on to the glory of God.’’ She said that evangelism is ongoing to expand and bring more women into the association. “Our women are participating actively in their parishes and in all archdiocesan activities across the country,’’ Usifoh said. |

The Zamfara State Government on Monday said it would employ 1000 teachers this year to address the problem of inadequate teachers in primary schools. Gov. AbdulAziz Yari announced this at the 2017 May Day celebration in Gusau, saying that only candidates with National Certificate of Education (NCE) would be employed as teachers. Yari, who was represented by his deputy, Malam Ibrahim Wakkala, said that the mass recruitment would enhance teaching and learning in state schools. According to him, the recruitment would also create employment opportunities for unemployed graduates in the state. On the 2017 Workers Day, Yari said the celebration was timely as negotiations between state government and labour over workers’ rights had been concluded. “The state government will pay all workers’ outstanding promotion and annual increment in this month of May. “The state government has also reached agreement with the labour to pay N100 million monthly for payment of gratuities to retired civil servants. “We have agreed to form a committee that will review the issue of pension to ensure attainment of the minimum wage on pensions,” he said. Yari commended the labour union in the state for their cooperation and understanding in addressing the demand of workers in the state. Earlier, the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Bashir Mafara, commended the state government efforts at addressing workers’ problems. Mafara said that the labour in the state would continue to cooperate with the state government to ensure that workers’ grievances were resolved in a peaceful manner. A three-storey building has collapsed in Alakahia community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Source: http://www.emmyloaded.com.ng/breaking-news-three-storey-building-collapses-in-rivers-state/ The building, located along the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) road in Alakahia, collapsed about 6 a.m, while neighbours were still asleep. About three workers at the construction site live in the building, but it could not be ascertained at the time of filing the report if they were in the building when the incident occurred. A witness, Pastor Obinna Amefule, said, “It was around 6 a.m this morning (Monday) that we heard a heavy noise and we rushed out of the room to see what happened. We were surprised to see that the building had collapsed.” Another resident, Solomon Erim, blamed the development on quality of materials used for the building, saying, “The fact about the incident that took place beats my imagination. As a resident who saw what happened, I am still in shock. It is painful that a man will spend money to erect a building of this magnitude and when the job is almost done, the whole building will collapse.” Source: http://www.emmyloaded.com.ng/breaking-news-three-storey-building-collapses-in-rivers-state/

There is confusion over the allocation of centres to candidates of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTM) examination next month by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to states outside their residences. Checks revealed that the examination body has started issuing centres and seat numbers to candidates. The slip containing the centre and seat numbers, according to checks also contain the examination towns where candidates will seat for the forthcoming examination. The exact names of the centre, according to JAMB, will be sent to the candidates’ email boxes in dues course. However, the online publication of candidates’ examination towns by the body appeared to have been greeted with more confusion ahead of this year’s UTM examination. Across the country, candidates and their parents are angrily protesting what they called the gross insensitivity of the management of the examination body in the choice of examination towns for many of the candidates. It was gathered that a good number of the candidates have been allocated centers outside their states of residence. The situation will see many candidates from Lagos state having to travel all the way to Ekiti, Ondo, Edo and other such states for the examination. Candidates, who spoke with our correspondent in Lagos, lamented the financial and physical difficulties they will encounter with the development. They added efforts to complain to the examination body and seek changes in their current examination towns are not yielding fruits. Their claims were corroborated by some parents and guardians who also lamented the development while urging JAMB to urgently do something about the situation. A 17- year- old candidate posted to Ondo State said she has never travelled out of Lagos alone. “When I printed out my JAMB e-registration slip last week, I was shocked to discover that I will be writing the examination in Ondo State. “I registered here in Lagos. I have never been to Ondo. I wonder why I have to go to Akure or Ondo town to write ordinary JAMB. “I am confused by the whole development. I don’t know if I will still write the examination,” she said. The mother of another aggrieved candidate ruled out the likelihood of her going to Ekiti state to write the examination. The middle-aged woman condemned what she called the unrealistic approach of JAMB. According to her, it is obvious that the examination body no longer understands how to go about organizing the yearly matriculation examination. “JAMB or what is it they are called should understand how young some of these candidates are. “My daughter is barely 18 years old and they want her to travel from Ikorodu to Ekiti just to sit for examination. “Aside the cost implication, the danger of such trip is not worth risking by such a young child. “They need to realize that they are scaring these children away from seeking education,” she argued on phone. But JAMB denied sending any candidate to far flung examination towns against their wish. Its spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said all the candidates chose the locations they wanted to write the examination themselves. Benjamin wondered why candidates who willingly filled the towns they are posted to while registering online will turn around to claim the body is forcing them to go to distance. “We didn’t send candidates out of town against their wishes on our own. They chose their examination towns themselves. “That is the truth of the matter. And to be candid, there is no fault of JAMB in any of these things you are talking about.” Asked why new centres were not created to prevent candidates having to go far away from their bases, he said: “We didn’t do that because we didn’t want to be accused of being biased. “We gave all the candidates the right of first refusal in choosing their examination towns. But where the centers run out quickly, we didn’t create new ones. “In fact, I foresee a situation where somebody in Lagos will write JAMB matriculation examination in Maiduguri soon because some places will always fill up before others. “And if we continue to make provision for more centers, somebody somewhere will say we are biased.” |
