Jobs/VacanciesRe: How A Highly Intelligent Lady Lost A Job Opportunity. by Encoredme(m): 11:11am On Oct 22, 2021
This doesn't sound right. Your boss needs to re-evaluate the requirements for hiring and maybe reconsider not choosing this candidate. The fact that there were cancellations is actually a good thing. Shows that she's someone who is not perfect and is willing to try again when they make mistakes.

Childofaking:
Two things i want you to enquire about before accepting a job offer especially if you have an option ;

1. Does the company have a career path ? If i join as an entry level person, in 5, 10 years where can i be potentially. The answer you get, is that what the people in there are experiencing? There are places where you can spend 6 years and nobody is mentioning anything to anybody about promotion. once in a while somebody will add 10k to your salary and that is all the raise or promotion, that kind of a place is deadly.

2. Pension funds. How do they treat their pension, do they have gratuity plan in addition to the statutory pension? Do they promptly remit the pension deducted from staff salaries ? A number of private companies and almost all government agencies only deduct and never remit their staff pension fund. If you are young, the issue of pension fund may not sound to you as important, but believe you me if you don't put into consideration now, you will regret it later.
Thanks for sharing. These are very good points.

Good points, but how many can you find out before you take up the offer?

How would you know if staff are disgruntled, or job hopping? How would you know how management treat the staff?
Good question! You can do some background research by talking to people who have worked in the company in the past or currently work there by reaching out to them on LinkedIn. Another way is to use JobHunch, which shows company reviews from a employees. The platform has a request a review feature that allows you to get the information you need to make a decision about a job offer.
Jobs/VacanciesThings You Should Look Out For Before Taking A Job At A Company by Encoredme(op): 1:32pm On Oct 19, 2021
When you want to take a new job, there are many things you are not sure about. Is this a good place to work? Will you be making the right decision leaving your current job to take this? What is the culture like? The list goes on. How do you know which company will fit your idea of a good workplace? That's where doing some background research about the company comes in.

Here are five things to look out for at a company you're considering:
1. You can get a feel for the culture
When you read reviews about your potential new employer, you will be able to get an idea of what it is like working there. This is especially true if they are not good reviews. If people are complaining about poor management, it is probably not the place for you.

2. You can find out if there are any job-hopping employees
If people are leaving after a short time at their new jobs, this might be an indicator that the company is not a good fit for you.

3. You can find out if there are any disgruntled employees
If people have left their previous jobs because of bad management, this might be an indicator that your new job will be the same.

4. You can find out if the company is hiring
If they often have a lot of job openings, this might be an indicator that you should not apply to work there. It might be that there are a lot of disgruntled employees who got tired and are deciding to leave their jobs for better opportunities. You might end up in the same situation if you don't do your research well.

5. You can get a feel for how management treats its employees
This is especially true if you are applying for a management position. You will want to avoid working for a company that has bad reviews from their employees.

These five reasons should be enough to convince you of the importance of doing some background research about your potential new employer.

Jobs/VacanciesSix Ways To Break Into The Tech Industry With Zero Experience by Encoredme(op): 10:49am On Sep 27, 2021
If you’ve been thinking of a career change, the tech sector is an exciting, fast-paced industry that is staffed by more than just computer aficionados. Positions come in all shapes and sizes. You can also get in without a technical background or a computer science degree. Tech roles like software engineer, product manager and product designer are often highly paid and offer great opportunities for career growth Also, there are lots of remote work opportunities for professionals in the tech space, which means you get to work with companies abroad and earn in foreign currency.

Here are 6 ways to become a tech bro/sis with little or no experience:

1. Take on technical projects
The best way to see if you are technically inclined and gain basic experience is to dive in headfirst. Work on side projects within your current role, or in your free time, to expose yourself to the field. Let’s face it – having just an interest in the field is not enough. Then it becomes a hobby. Getting concrete experience under your belt is the best way to build your portfolio.

2. Learn more tech skills
While going back to school for a four-year degree may not be in the cards, some type of education and training can go a long way. Talk to others in the sector to find out those courses, or programs that are most beneficial. Some great courses are offered online. If programming is more your thing, the first thing anyone should do is learn HTML and maybe even some JavaScript. Codecademy and W3Schools are two great places to start.

3. Look to startups
Startups typically go against the grain when it comes to traditional job requirements. These kinds of companies tend to focus more on training and candidate potential, rather than strict academic background. They seek well-rounded individuals to help them grow to the next level. Having marketable skills, in addition to some background in tech, could be the exact mix of ingredients these firms look for in a candidate.

4. Find a mentor
Working with someone who is tech-savvy is a great way to develop your skills. Get first-hand knowledge from someone trusted and experienced in the industry. People are willing to help those that are willing to help themselves. Find someone who you could learn from, and alternatively who could learn from you. Mentoring is a two-way street.

5. Stand out from the crowd
How are you going to differentiate yourself from other job seekers in the industry? This is where drive, determination and perseverance go a long way. Maybe you are a quick learner, or adaptable in the workplace. Maybe you see solutions where others don’t. Are you a keen problem solver? Find your niche and incorporate it into the proposition you are offering an employer.

6. Immerse yourself
To learn any new skill or trade there is no way around hard work. Immerse yourself in the industry – network with other like-minded individuals, attend a technology conference and read as much as you can on the topic. Websites like Techvibes and IT World Canada offer great starting points for exploration in this industry.

Hi guys, so there are times where you just feel weak, tired and out of ideas.

This ultimately affects your productivity within that period. So I’ll like to know, how do you deal with unproductive periods.
When you're feeling this way, it is sometimes your body's way of telling you to take a break and return to work when you're feeling refreshed. Sometimes we push beyond the limit of what our brains can do at a given time and it gets fatigued quickly. Go do something different or return to it after a while (hours/days) and see what happens!

Is #150,000 monthly salary considered a good salary ?

Is the pay ok with a wife and a kid?

What is your take?
It all depends on your monthly expenses. What works for one person may not work for another. If you keep your expenses to the barest minimum, N150,000 can do a lot, but not enough for extra and savings. It also depends on your location in Nigeria.

I guys please I need your advice on this.

I'm 25 years old and I'm working at NNPC depot as a security officer for the almost 3 years now, but ever since we've been doing this job the company have always been owing us at least two months, Now is now getting to the stage that I can't hold it anymore because the company is owing us almost Eight (cool months now, I can't stop thinking even if I don't want to and it's hurting me, though I'm not married yet nor girlfriend but I'm the one taking responsibility of my sick mother, my two sisters and brother.

The company is paying #40,000 for salary, I'm owing more than 100k from bank and many apps like that.

Now the company promise to clear all the outstanding debt at the end of this month but before then only God knows what can happen.

I've been thinking about it and I don't know what to do, Should I quit the job?

Please share your thoughts.
Hi OP, I will advise you to wait to see how it goes by the end of the month. If you do get paid, you should consider resigning a short time after that, to give yourself sometime to save money to cushion the effect of not having any income sources.
Jobs/VacanciesWhat To Do When You Have A Bad Boss by Encoredme(op): 3:19pm On Sep 13, 2021
Here are some suggestions that might help reduce the level of difficulty you have when working with your bad boss:

1. Look To Your Own Performance First
You might think your boss is being difficult because they are demanding a different level of output from you. Make sure you are clear on what they expect from you.

2. Realize You May Have Opposing Styles
You might be expecting something from your boss that they simply can't do. You might think they are unfriendly simply because they fail to say "Good morning." To them, that might simply be a waste of time. Examine your own expectations of what you think they should be doing. They may not be very outgoing or simply operate differently than what you're used to. Reset your expectations.

3. Learn The Boss
Spend some time really observing your boss to see what it is they do that is impacting you. In the process, you might learn that they are getting leaned on by their boss and it's creating extra stress. You could discover they aren't a morning person, meaning you should delay important interactions until after lunch. Figure out their rhythms and modify your own.

4. Don't Shrink
All too often, when we don't like someone, we go out of your way to avoid them. While I think this tactic can work to keep you under the radar, wait to do that until you clearly have exhausted all of your options. You may also find that more, not less, communication can help you with this type of person. Shrinking away into a dark corner won't help you.

5. Become Indispensable
If you've attempted to learn more about your boss, take it to the next level and become an indispensable employee. Focus on using your problem-solving skills and offer your boss additional help and support. This will help them shine to their own boss and also reduce reasons for finding fault with you. You can become the "go-to" person that they respect and depend on.

6. Let It Roll Off Of You
We will spend a lifetime running into people that are demanding, critical, and downright volatile. You need to learn the skill of blowing most of it off. Certainly, there will be some of it that will still bother you, but most of the time you can't let it affect you. I'm not suggesting ignoring your boss's needs or demands; I'm saying to not let their method of delivery be what grabs your attention or reaction. I have found that even the most difficult of bosses can be tamed or at least subdued.

I once worked for a guy who had even the most senior, sage people in tears. When I started working directly for him, I noticed he was quick to engage in verbal battle. If you stood up for yourself, he backed down. I soon figured out that he tested people. If they backed down, he was relentless. When I told him my observation, he laughed and told me I was the only person who had figured it out. He felt that if you were right about something, you would defend it and if you didn't defend it, he couldn't respect you. It was that simple. It was who he was—good or bad, but we always worked well together—and that's the most important part.

If you're dealing with a bad boss, be sure to follow these six tips. When you feel like quitting, just remember you can turn a bad situation around, but it does take work.

Jobs/Vacancies6 Things To Do Before Leaving Your Job by Encoredme(op): 3:58pm On Sep 06, 2021
Here are six things you can do to keep both your body and most of your mind on the job until your very last day.

1. Be Aware Of The Shift
As mentioned, we start shifting and disengaging. Check-in with yourself or a trusted co-worker daily to stay aware and focused on your work.

2. Make A Departure Plan
The best departure plan will be made with your manager to incorporate their needs for completion and cross-training. To ensure you're engaged during this time, make sure you have included things you want to accomplish before you leave. All items need dates for when you will have them done. Keep track of those dates every day.

3. Collect Materials
Since you are leaving, think through the types of information and materials you might want to have in your next position or in the future. The types of things to consider collecting include:
-Performance appraisals
-Employee recognition notes and letters
-Copies of supporting emails from bosses
-Reference materials that aren't proprietary to the company, but you may want to reuse
-Email addresses and phone numbers of people you will want to keep in your professional network

4. Finish The "To-Do" List
Now is the time when you need to complete those pesky lower-priority items you never got to. We all have them and somehow wait for the day when we have nothing else better to do. Get these done now.

5. Clean And Organize Your Desk And Office
There is nothing worse than the chore of cleaning up someone else's leftover mess when they leave. Make your goal to leave your desk ready for the move-in of the next occupant. Label files, toss out materials that only you found of value and refill anything that's almost empty.

6. Make Your Goal To Be There Completely
To make your last days the best for you and everyone, commit to being fully involved until the day you leave. In order to have a great career and personal brand, you have to think of the work you do in all of its phases. Clearly, leaving is a phase that you will have more than once in your career. It can be the lasting impression you make on your current boss, as well as on future bosses who may be your peers right now. Make that lasting impression as impressive as the work you do.

Hi there! Achieving your career goals in Nigeria requires a bit of everything. And no, you can't use ideals from western countries to succeed in Nigeria. This is a different terrain altogether. You have to be smart, ruthless, hardworking and most importantly, courageous. Also, don't forget the place of putting God first. It is a long uphill battle and you need all the help you can get. Leverage on relationships you have built over the years to get what you want. You need to have a plan of action at all times. Be the CEO's friend, even if it requires you to kiss ass sometimes. Do it. It is only a means to an end. This does not mean you should put work away and drink with the boss. You're only going to get yourself fired. All the same, all the best to you!

Instead of people to be happy and celebrate with you, they're getting jealous. We need more kindness in the workplace. This is why Nigeria is backwards as a country!

Jobs/VacanciesPut Your Mental Health First In Your Career by Encoredme(op): 6:25pm On Sep 02, 2021
It's a new month! No matter how much pressure comes from your job, always remember to put your mental wellbeing first. A lot is happening around the world and in our individual lives all at once. It's easy to get caught up in the daily grind of life, but let yourself enjoy it.

Employers want us to show loyalty and provide results. There is often the fear of losing your job or getting replaced, so that keeps you up at night putting in the hours to complete a project or task. Well, here's an invitation to breathe and find ways to give yourself the room to relax and recharge.

The next time you're feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to slow down and remember that it's okay not to be okay. If you do feel like something is wrong with your mental health, don't be afraid to talk to someone you trust about it. Let your supervisor or human resources personnel know about it and seek to take some time off to get help. We recommend that you check out Nguvu Health for resources and support.

We're going to be okay.
CareerFind Out What The Company Is Like Before Taking Their Offer by Encoredme(op): 11:03am On Aug 22, 2021
When you start a new job, many expectations come up, both from your new employer and yourself. For one, you expect some basic things to happen, like the conditions and promises stated in your offer letter getting fulfiled. But sometimes, things don't go that way. You end up working there for a while and start resenting your job and employer. It turns out things have always been this way at this company. You just didn't know. If you had known, you would not have applied for the job and taken their offer. So you decide to resign and start job hunting again, barely some months after you stopped. It's quite exhausting and a waste of time.
You don't have to keep falling into this issue, thanks to a new website called JobHunch, that allows you to read company reviews of places you want to work. You can also leave reviews of your current and previous employers. This way, people who want to work with them are better prepared. Get started here: thejobhunch.com.
