ForceDisciplinary Committee (FDC) of the Nigeria Police is currently trying 195 senior police officers for various offences. Among those facing trial are four Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs) of Police, 17 Commissioners of Police (CPs), two Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and six Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs). The remaining ones range from the ranks of Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) down to Superintendents of Police (SPs). The trial which began on Monday will last till Friday. Chairman of the FDC, Suleman Dauda Fakai, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Monday. The FDC is a committee of the Force comprising all Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) of Police and the Force Secretary who is the Committee’s Secretary. The committee essentially serves to review disciplinary matters involving senior officers from the rank of ASP and above who may have erred one way or the other in the course of their duties. Fakai told newsmen that the current management of the Force inherited over 3,000 cases, which, according to him, have been cleared. He added: “From January this year till date, we have dismissed one CP, one ACP, one CSP, two SPs and eight ASPs. “In the same period, we have also forcefully retired two CSPs, one SP and 13 ASPs. “We have also reduced the ranks of one DCP, three CSPs, seven SPs, one DSP and 10 ASPs.” He noted that for officers who are queried either from the Force Headquarters or officers who engage in misconduct in the various commands, “The query will be forwarded here together with the write-ups and the officers are expected to appear here and defend themselves on what they have done.” “This committee will submit its findings and recommendations to the Inspector General ofPolice (IGP) and finally to the Police Service Commission. The Police Service Commission will give the appropriate punishment. “The punishment ranges from dismissal and prosecution, dismissal, reduction in rank, severe reprimand, warning letter, letter of advice or exoneration. (That means the person was found not to have committed theoffence in question). |
FG begs lecturers to return to classroom Posted on Tuesday, July 9th, 2013 By Innocent Oweh Correspondent, Abuja One weekinto the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government finally met with Vice Chancellors of all public universities in Abuja on Monday. The meeting which held at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission (NUC)was chaired by Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, with most of the Vice Chancellors in attendance. Rufa’i, who pleaded with the striking lecturers to go back to the classroom while negotiations continue, indicated that she will be leading a delegation from her ministry to meet with members of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Education today and that ASUU and its executives are expected to also be in attendance. “We would be meeting with the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Education and our colleagues would be there and after that encounter we would take decisions. “I believe that after tomorrow you will know the relationship between government and ASUU. But the good thing is that we always plead that let them go back to the classes,” the minister said. ASUU’s current strike is anchored on the 2009 pact the union entered with the FederalGovernment, one major component of which is the Academic Earned Allowance (AEA). Meanwhile, President of ASUU, Nasir Fagge, who spoke at a separate forum organised by the Independent Service Delivery Monitoring Group (ISDMG) in Abuja to x-ray President Goodluck Jonathan’s achievement in the education sector, accused the NUC of violating the Act establishing it. According to Fagge, issues of better infrastructure, funding and welfare needs fortertiary institutions which ASUU has been clamouring for over the years ought to be theresponsibility of the regulatory agency, NUC. Fagge said government, rather than own up that it has failed in the provision of access to quality education in the country, heaps the blame on low public private partnership (PPP). ASUU also took a swipe at government over the recent establishment of additional 12 universities in the six geo-political zones, saying they were mere measures to assuage political interests. “What do I mean by this? Every time we have interaction with government, the issue of PPPcomes in. “Simply put, the private sector must contribute to the development of education in this country. How does the Federal Government expect the private sector to contribute? The first thing government placeson the table is, we increase tuition fee. “NUC is busy organising conferences, rather than focusing on regulatory functions, these are clear cut violations of education laws that NUC is supposed to address. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/07/fg-begs-lecturers-to-return-to-classroom/ |

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-23230999 s Nigeria's Tope Folarin wins Caine writing prize 9 July 2013Last updated at 01:25 Tope Folarin beat four other contenders US-based Nigerian writer Tope Folarin has won this year's prestigious Caine Prize for African Writing. He received the £10,000 ($15,000) prize for his short story Miracle, set in an evangelical Nigerian church in the US city of Texas. The judges described it as a "delightful and beautifully paced narrative". Mr Folarin was among five writers short-listed for the prize, regarded as Africa's leading literary award. Three other Nigerians were short-listed - Elnathan John for Bayan Layi, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim for The Whispering Trees andChinelo Okparanta for America. 'Blind pastor-prophet' Sierra Leone's Pede Hollist was the only non-Nigerian short-listed for his short story Foreign Aid. Ms Okparanta was the only female contender. The chair of judges, Gus Casely-Hayford, awarded Mr Folarin the prize at a dinner held at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University in the UK. "Tope Folarin's Miracle is another superb Caine Prize winner - a delightful and beautifully paced narrative, that is exquisitely observed and utterly compelling,"he said. In Miracle, a congregation gathers at a church to witness the healing powers of a blind pastor-prophet. "Religion and the gullibility of those caught in the deceit that sometimes comes with faith rise to the surface as a young boy volunteers to be healed and begins to believe in miracles," the Caine Prize said in a statement. This is the second consecutive year that a Nigerian has won the prize. Last year's winner was Rotimi Babatunde for his story Bombay's Republic - about Nigerian soldiers who fought in the Burma campaign during World War II. |

Ifeanyi Uba Speaking at the state secretariat of the party after performing the same ceremony at Nnewi North Local Government chapter of the party, Ubah stated,” I thank you all my brothers. Today, I want to tell you that I have joined the Labour Party. I came into Labour Party so that we can join hands to reform Anambra state”. Ubah said he decided to join LP after due consultations with the churches, family, elders and stakeholders in the state who endorsed his choice for the party. “ I have made consultations before deciding tojoin Labour Party. After the consultations, I came to the conclusion that the only party that has human beings as their symbols was only LP while others were represented by inanimate objects”. He said his campaign organization and the members of LP would hold 14 days prayer to ask God for forgiveness that the people of Anambra had allowed a party with a cock symbol to govern the state. Earlier, the state chairman of the party, Mr Samuel Orargbulam thanked Ubah for joining the party, saying that they had been praying for a credible, suitable, qualified and acceptable aspirant like him to join the party. By Abdulwahab Abdulah Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has fixed October 16, 2013 for the commencement of trial in a N120 million copyright suit filed against popular music star, Innocent Idibia, a.k.a. TuFace, his wife, Annie Idibia and their manager, Anthonio Anifite over photographsallegedly taken at the recent traditional wedding of the musician and his wife in Akwa Ibom State. Abuja based photographer, Emmanuel Okolo, who is the plaintiff in the suit alongside his studio, Papilonmexy filed suit against the defendants. *Tuface and Annie Idibia during their traditional marriage He is asking for six reliefs, two of which include N100 million in general damages and N20million in exemplary damages. At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, neither TuFace nor his wife was represented in court. Anifite who is the second defendant was however represented by his counsel, J.O Uttute. Meanwhile, a mild drama ensued when the judge openly admonished Uttute after the latter claimed that he had filed his defence when he had not done so. The judge warned him not to come to this court again if he was not prepared for the case. “You told me that you have filed your response, but looking through here, there is nothing to that effect. And you are even smiling. Do you think you are here to joke? Never come to this court again if you are not prepared. You don’t even know when the case was filed and you are not prepared for it,” said the judge. Also, the plaintiff’s counsel, Habeeb Oredola expressed worry over the defendants’ inability to appear before the court or be represented by a counsel after they were served with the writs of summon. In the writ of summon, Okolo and his studio claimed they were contracted by TuFace’s wife through a third party, identified as Ms Chineze Anyaene to take photo shots at the traditional wedding held in Eket, Akwa Ibom state in March, 2013. The plaintiff said, he was reluctant at the beginning since the offer was coming through a third party, but later accepted afterhe was convinced that the offer was actually with the blessing of the first defendant. Annie Idibia was said to have later contacted the photographer after the wedding and demanded for the printing of 10 of the high resolution pictures taken. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/06/photographer-drags-tuface-wife-to-court-over-wedding-pictures/ |
