Iamwrath: Increased reserve means there's savings a general pool of funds which can manipulate demand and supply Which means $ wouldn't find its true value if government has to intervene every time. Anyhow you look at it, it is not sustainable. There will be only one outcome which is depletion of the reserve fund we are celebrating now. |

pinkcottoncandy: The issue of oil, how about building functioning oil refineries so that we use our oil here in Naija and sell any excess to gain more fx. Rather than have our ailing economy anchored to dollar/oil volatility which will always have a negative effect on our economy because we dont have any amour to play in this global market. I remember Ifeanyi Ubah complaining about them interested investors not getting it easy from our government in respect to construction of refineries. There's this believe among them that Dangote is getting forex at cheaper amount while others are made to get it at higher price. I hope that is not true. |
Politics › Re: External Reserves Rise By $1bn In Two Weeks by eph12(m): 9:45am On Jan 17, 2017 |
Iamwrath: I don't blame you if you don't understand the benefits of increased reserves and how it relates to my comment Increased reserve does not automatically mean better rates. Demand and supply determines that. If our economy is 90% internally sustainable that is we don't have to import as much as we currently do $ will automatically fall in value because people wouldn't need it that much. When price of fuel goes up is it not always because of scarcity? Same with other goods. But when there is surplus in circulation the exchangers will have no choice but to reduce their rates. And it can only be surplus if the government pumps $ into the system or if people don't need it anymore. |

Iamwrath: Thieves with long straw can no longer sit in a corner and suck at our reserves
Let it grow larger abeg, dollar must return to. 80 to 1naira How does this translates to improvement in our currency? You want government to subsidise dollars again so our external reserve is depleted right? |

davodyguy: There's nothing wrong in what's happening.
Let me quickly clarify before dumbass analyst start talking nonsense.
Where we were
Sometime in December, 2015 the price of crude oil per barrel dropped to about $32 and the exchange rate then was less than N300 to 1$. At that time, the government. Marketers were making profit, without subsidy being paid.
2016 first quarter
By mid January, the price of crude oil started rising, and that was the time CBN started their failed policy on exchange rate. What happened then was that as the crude oil price increased, exchange rate to dollar also increased. This made landing cost of refined products to go up. You would recall that we experienced scarcity till May, 2016 when subsidy was finally removed. Why? Cos product was sold. (PMS) at N87 per litre and the differential was paid to marketers as subsidy.
May, 2016
Subsidy was removed. Exchange rate is now over 300 naira to a dollar. Hence we started buying PMS per litre at N145.
NOV, 2016
International price of crude oil rose to $50 per barrel and exchange rate is over N400. The landing cost would automatically increase. But since PMS price is still being regulated and pegged, no marketer would import a product at N145 per litre and still sell below cost price.
JAN, 2017
In order to avoid two things
1) Fuel Scarcity 2) Increased PMS price
NNPC is now importing 90%. of daily consumption of PMS so that Nigerians would not suffer.
So I wonder how some dunce will insult NNPC, when they're actually saving you.
The only solution now is for CBN to do something about the exchange rate and things would be back to normal.
Price not per barrel is about $53-54 and exchange rate is over N400 naira.
Price may remain $54 or even go higher as we pray and hope for. CBN must do something about the exchange rate and allow drop back to 300 or below. If this is done, things would balance up Demand and supply is responsible for exchange rates. If we maintain this pressure on dollar and you wish for cbn to bring down the exchange rate, then expect the fg to dip hands into the external reserve that you have been rejoicing that is rising. In summary it's not sustainable. And people are talking not because of what's happening but because of the propaganda and campaign during the election. I even remember Tam-David West abi what's his name saying pms should be sold for far lesser than what it was being sold as oil price fell worldwide. But the reverse is the case and we have not heard from him again. Mind you he was speaking for APC and I think many people sitting on the fence decided to vote APC because they thought that's what is going to happen |
