I'm Oluyomi Dare, a freelance graphics designer.

This thread will house a compilation of some of my previous designs, I'm into all forms of print designs but with a greater understanding of branding (Logo design, business card design, letterhead design, etc).

Constructive criticisms as well as encouragements will be appreciated.

I also won't appreciate anyone trying to derail the thread.

I'll go first...

Couple of people participated in the Logo design portfolio some months back and I'm sure it came with its benefits.

We'll be doing something similar here, only difference is it will be on business card designs. Post your business card designs here either plain or as mock-ups.

There's greatness in us and I'm hoping Nairaland serves as a platform to showcase that greatness to Nigerians as well as the world.

Note: I read some people asking for pictures of hard copy design samples on folyboy's thread. Most designers, myself inclusive don't have any business with printing so we might not always have access to final printed output. All we do is design.

Maximum of 4 samples each please at a dimension of 700px by 400px, thank you.

Based on design..'presidentially', I'll root for APC.

In other news, the image of an ambulance comes up in my head whenever I see Ambode's logo. Looks like something for/from the health sector.

It does look like it but it isn't. I guess the plus sign above made it tilt to that direction more.

The long awaited event is gradually drawing in. Vote for this, vote for that will soon be words in various historic texts. The 2015 elections will soon be a forgone issue, delivering various winners and losers with subsequent verbal and legal challenges.
The election day(s) or its eventual winner(s) isn't the reason for this article, the campaign process is, specifically the grahics-related aspect of the campaign process. I'll be looking at how Nigerian campaigns have evolved graphically in 2015 elections compared to 2011 elections.

[size=14pt]What has changed?[/size]
I guess many people will agree with me that there has being significant improvement in the deisgn of campaign materials compared to the last general elections(2011). We see neater designs, sharper images, and more visually appealing designs.
I'll be looking at the two major political parties, All Progressives Congress(APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) with specific reference to their presidential and Lagos state gubernitorial candidates.

The following are the significant improvements I can pinpoint.

1. Logo: By this, I'm not refering to the logo of political parties on design materials. Candidates this time around have adopted particular logos in form of symbols and word marks. Evwn where the candidates picture isn't available, their respective logos is used to identify materials by them.

The "JK" logo used by Jimi Agbaje also appears on every of his campaign material.

2: Slogan: Each political party's candidate have sumed up what they are offering into slogans. Some are just a single word while others consist of a catch phrase. The manifesto of the APC presidential candidate has been summed up into the word #Change suggesting that they bring a better option and will offer positive change from the present administration. On the other hand, the PDP presidential candidate is sticking with the slogan #Transformation, suggesting that he is currently putting the nation through a stage of positive trasformation and is ready to keep up with the transformation if voted for to remain in power.

3: Color unity: This I must say is one of the most commendable improvements I've noticed. Campaign materials for a candidate now boasts of similar color profiles through different platforms. Its possible for electorates to guess who's poster they are looking at through the color combination alone. This has also helped in achieving neater and more distinctive designs.

Also, the PDP presidential campaign team has stuck to use of green and red in most of its designs.

4: Use of fonts: Yes, this part rocks too. I can recall very well those days when a single poster will consist of at least five(5) different fonts, making the thing look like an ancient scroll. Now, there is use of candidate-specific fonts. A particular candidate having a particular font being used consistently in all of his/her campaign materials. As a designer, this makes me proud.

5: Image quality: Permit me to go outside my scope of study a bit. I saw recently a campaign design of the former Bayelsa state governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha vieing for senate. It was a disappointment. Pixelating image with varying shades of colors. Good news is this kind of designs are few. Candidate images are sharper with impeccable quality. Really, kudos to the photographers and those that edited the images too. You all rock.

I'm going to stop here for now. If PDP and APC are design agencies and I'm asked to patronise either based on their design outputs, I think I'll go with APC. They really revolutionised graphically the campaign process in this election.

If it was you, based on their material designs only, who will you patronise?

I don't see any simplicity here. Can't even seem to pick out any particular design. I can't see any direction. Pay more time to research before any project, its a great source of inspiration.

Note: The following is my personal opinion, counter-opinions and rebuttals will be welcomed and appreciated.

In the beginning was Boko Haram and the present administration wasted no time in attributing its existence and sponsorship to the opposition. They claimed the opposition was trying to make the country ungovernable. I never believed that textbook-inspired story but many Nigerians did. I didn't believe because the opposition can't be that stupid and obvious and if there was any iota of truth in the accusations, why were they not being arrested, investigated and duly prosecuted? Again, the genesis of Boko Haram far preceded the creation of the major opposition party.

I noticed a trend in the time of bomb blasts and related attacks, the major ones mostly occurred when the government's activities were becoming obvious and questionable (I'll come up with a listing of that later). I learnt at that period that this administration practiced a government of distraction. Their agent of distraction was Boko Haram. The attacks shifted attention from whatever was the raging issue at hand unto the victims of the attacks and its degree of brutality in comparison to the last.

Again the government confirmed my fears when it used the same Boko Haram situation to arm-twist INEC into postponing the general elections previously slated for February to March.

My question has and will always be, who stands to gain more from the existence of Boko Haram? The government or the opposition?

I don't see how what I said warranted your choice of words but keep it up if it makes you a better "man". What I wrote up there is in the interest of designers in this section, either you choose to see it that way or not.

A designer knows the best means of sourcing for jobs.
All you have to do is drop the link to the portfolios and not calling a designer desperate 'cause your dropping the link shows how desperate you are 'cause your designs are there and you hope to get the Job.

Mind your choice of words.

If I was desperate, I won't have dropped the link. I would have contacted him personally knowing my status here gives me a upper hand and not drop a link that will give everyone a level playing ground.

All I wrote is for the sake of people like you. There are designers who come to this section just to 'steal' away clients without contributing anything and who are not even as good as you are. So if you see my choice of words as offensive, no apologies.

Maybe you should visit the thread below, check out the profiles of preferred designers and contact them. Only desperate amateur designers will tend to contact you the way you are going about it.

This is a part of design that most newbie designers are yet to get accustomed with and even few experienced designers still fail to fully exploit it. Information is vital, not just to graphic designers but to every development-oriented individual and organisation. Thank Goodness for the internet, information is now available just a couple of clicks away.
So why is information so important to a graphic designer? The creative arts is an ever-evolving field. New trends, software updates, events, universal average standard pricing, new styles and all new discoveries which are important in the growth of every designer are made almost on a daily basis. Proper access and use of relevant information ensures the relevance of a designer in the ever growing creative world.

The irony of this is that many people see graphics design as a passive and informal occupation. I'm not talking about having a degree in graphics design. It's not only medical doctors, lawyers and other professionals that never stop reading, we also don't. *winks*. A designer simply can't know everything even if he/she has specialised (I know how much I still learn daily on logo design branding alone). There is always that tip and trick you are yet to know of, a tool you are yet to maximise its use or even an effect you keep getting stuck on. Read to learn and explore the beauty in your potentials.

There's always that thing that differentiates some designers from others, sometimes that thing is just their ability to give a purpose to everything. Nothing falls under the radar, every stroke is accounted for and every dot has its purpose. While this comes naturally to some designers, it has taken time and hardwork for some others to achieve it. It takes having a keen interest in what you are doing and love for the profession.

This is really not a practice but it is note-worthy. Its really impossible to list every other thing without passion because it's the soil where every other thing grows. Passion and creativity goes hand in hand. So if you are a designer because of the money and not the love for it, I'll advise you find something else doing.

This is a fun one, at least to normal people. All work and no play they say makes Jack a dull boy. Most designers I've known are private people, the ones at the background making things happen. Hobby is about fun with a little added advantage for designers, its also a source of inspiration. Come to think of it, designing is a hobby on it's own. One of my numerous hobbies is taking long walks, this affords me the opportunity to see various forms of print designs ranging from banners to posters to flyers, to magazines, and the likes of them. I mentally engage myself in things that could have been done better on each design and themes that could have passed the message across better. This mental debate inspires me and usher in new ideas.

[size=14pt]6. Taking notes:[/size]
Its pretty hard to see a seasoned designer without a form of writing pad or the other. They take it everywhere they go, you never can tell where an idea might pop up. Ideas leave as fast as they come so its important to note it down before it leaves. Most ideas might not even seem worth the trouble initiaally but further development might just produce a masterpiece. Note pads are advisable for a designer, take it everywhere even to the bathroom.

This is actually a prerequisite to being a great designer. A clumsy designer will likely end up not making maximum use of available design resources. A disorganized design is always unappealing and speaks negatively of the designer.

I'll choose to agree with you and also state that this can happen in Lagos because everyone's eyes is on Lagos.

Please can you provide video or picture evidence of the said primaries?

And can you mention another state where primaries for the same said positions held?

Don't make a fool of yourself, I won't bother making such statements without adequate proof. But I'll love you to prove me wrong.

I hate to burst your bubble but asides governorship primaries that APC held which we can't even verify their authenticity, which other primaries have you seen for other positions? I'll like to know.

I'm sure you won't be able to mention much because none was held. APC(tinubu) imposed AGAIN!

APC preaches democracy but can't even practice it internally. It's sad.

I'm sympathetic to the APC's cause but this worrisome act of neglecting grassroot politicians for Londoners and elites is becoming unacceptable and might spell doom for the party.

I thought the case of Ekiti and Osun would have thought them a lesson but obviously not.

When I get to be involved in a discussion about my dear country Nigeria and I hear someone repeat that dreaded sentence,

"We'll just have to keep praying for Nigeria".

I tend to temporarily lose my senses. Who on earth still thinks this way? Nigeria has some of the biggest churches in the world and is home to filthy rich (assumed spiritually powerful) general overseers, we are even unofficially counted among the most religious countries in the world, yet She has been steadily moving from grace to grass.

Shouldn't we have realized there's something wrong somewhere? Its either this religion of a thing isn't for us or we are just damn cowards always seeking the easy way (prayers) out.

I can't remember the number of times I've gone into lengthy fasts for this country, the only benefit I derived was reduction of my already bulging pot-belly. Everything is still the same, my rights are still being trampled upon and my future in my own home is still uncertain.
We Nigerians need to start realizing that we are in this alone. There's no God anywhere who's gonna wave a magic wand and make everything better (I'm not saying there's no God, he just doesn't work the way we've been programmed to believe). We need to start being politically conscious and economically active.

Our general overseers just like our elected (mostly rigged in) leaders are not ready to empower us and make us independent because they know that will reduce our dependence on their spiritual maneuvers and policies. Overseers can build schools and charge exorbitantly (affordable to mostly children of these same politicians) but can't create youth empowerment programs. They have turned to devils that give you N10 and use it to collect N100 in return. Nothing goes for nothing. They build their schools with our tithes and offering and we can't even afford these same schools. Irony of life.

I have nothing against them though. They'll keep sucking us dry till we smart up and snatch our freedom from the claws of religious and spiritual slavery.

Nigeria truly needs a revolution but its a personal revolution. A revolution against archaic thought processes, a revolution against spiritual slavery, a revolution against misinformation. We have been pushed aside for too long, our time is now to build a better Nigerian and by extension, a better Nigeria. The battle is within.

Just don't know why you guys like hiding behind a finger. You have videos everywhere and you are still sticking with pictures taken by the "presidential media team". What then do you call being biased?

My grouse isn't with Jonathan being booed or not, it is with people like you locking your conscience up all in a bid promote a false image of an individual who doesn't really care about you.

This is the first time I'm commenting on this booing issue and it'll likely be the last. No politician is feeding me and I owe none of them nothing. But whatever decision I make in 2015 at the polls, I'm sure I'll be able to proudly tell my children and children's children about it.
