Education / I've Gotten Admission Yet My JAMB Status Displays "No Admission Given Yet" by Ericardo7(m): 4:02pm On Oct 03, 2014
Dear Nairalanders, I need all the help in the world at this stage.
I was offered admission into the Federal University Of Petroleum Resources(FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State to study Computer Science. Yet each time I check my admission status on the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) website, it keeps displaying "No admission given yet".
I sent an email to FUPRE and JAMB respectively. Fupre replied my email urging me to exercise patience that maybe JAMB have not updated their website. JAMB on the other hand have not replied me. This "no admission given yet" status has been there for almost 2weeks since i've been given admission.
The worrying part is that it's not just me. Many students from FUPRE and other institutions across the country are complaining about this same problem. Some of my friends and my friend's friends in schools like Uniben, Delsu, Uniport etc have been complaining of this same problem.
I am Really worried because I will need my admission letter from JAMB during clearance at the school come January when we resume.
I Really need help at this stage. I'm calling on anyone who hears my cry and that of people like me and can help us to please help us. And if there's anyone who works in JAMB That's here, that person should help us out. We're pleading!!!!!

Dear moderators please help us get to FRONT page So that more people can see this, thereby increasing our chances of being helped.Thanks.
Culture / Re: What Is The Origin Of Clapping/applause And Why Is It So Widespread? by Ericardo7(m): 4:42pm On Oct 02, 2014
The custom of applauding may be as old
and as widespread as humanity, and the
variety of its forms is limited only by the
capacity for devising means of making a
noise (e.g., stomping of feet or rapping of
fists or hands on a table). Within each
culture, however, it is usually subject to
conventions.
The ancient Romans had a set ritual of
applause for public performances, expressing
degrees of approval: snapping the finger
and thumb, clapping with the flat or hollow
palm, waving the flap of the toga, for which
the emperor Aurelian substituted
handkerchiefs (orarium ) that he had
distributed to the Roman people. [1] In
Roman theatre, at the close of the play, the
chief actor called out "Valete et plaudite!",
and the audience, guided by an unofficial
choregus , chanted their applause
antiphonally. This was often organized and
paid for. [2]
Similarly, a claque (French for "clapping"wink
was an organized body of professional
applauders in French theatres and opera
houses who were paid by the performer(s) to
create the illusion of an increased level of
approval by the audience.
In Christianity , customs of the theatre
were adopted by the churches. Eusebius [3]
says that Paul of Samosata encouraged the
congregation to applaud his preaching by
waving linen cloths (οθοναις), and in the
4th and 5th centuries applause of the
rhetoric of popular preachers had become an
established custom. Applause in church
eventually fell out of fashion, however, and
partly by the influence of the quasi-
religious atmosphere of the performances of
Richard Wagner's operas at the Bayreuth
Festspielhaus , the reverential spirit that
inspired this soon extended back to the
theatre and the concert hall.

Ericardo...the story goes thus.
On the day of my naming ceremony I was named Eric. Two weeks later, my uncle who was in the navy, returned from Spain. Upon hearing the name, he said that he had a Spanish friend named Ericardo. He later told me that it was Ericardo (his Spanish friend) that saved their entire crew from sea pirates that had captured them. He is my godfather so he gave me the name Ericardo as gratitude to his Spanish friend. I grew up to love the name. Even my friends loved it. It also has the tendency of turning females on.
That's the reason and origin of my moniker.

Phones / 10 Reasons To Root Your Android Phone. by Ericardo7(m): 11:40am On Jul 24, 2014
Android is one of the most open, versatile, and
customizable mobile operating systems out there.
You may think you don't need to root your phone, but you'd be surprised at how much more you can accomplish with a little work .
Here are 10 reasons rooting your phone is worth the hassle.

10. Unlock Hidden Features and Install
"Incompatible" Apps
Sometimes, even Android isn't open enough to give you some of the features you want. Either an app is blocked by carriers, hacks into Android's system files, or otherwise isn't available. Luckily, rooting can help with that: you can install carrier-blocked apps, get features from the latest version of Android, make incompatible apps compatible, power up your hardware , get features like Beats Audio from other phones, or emulate exclusive features like those on the Moto X . Whatever you want, rooting gives you the power to do a lot more.

9. Automate Everything
You've probably heard of Tasker, the awesome
app that automates just about anything on your
phone. You don't need to root your phone to use
it, but if you're rooted, it can do a whole lot more. Certain tasks, like toggling 3G, GPS, changing CPU speed, turning the screen on, and others require root access. So, if you want to get the full benefit of an app like Tasker, you'll definitely want to root your phone.

8. Boost Your Phone's Speed and Battery Life
You can do a lot of things to speed up your phone and boost its battery life without rooting, but with root—as always—you have even more power. For example, with an app like SetCPU you can overclock your phone for better performance, or underclock it for better battery life. You can also use an app like Greenify to automatically hibernate apps you aren't using—perfect for those apps that always want to run in the background when you're not looking.

7. Block Ads in Any App
Look, we of all people understand the need for
occasional ads—it's how we make money. But ads
can also get in the way and use up data. If you
want to block ads in certain apps or on certain
devices, rooting is by far the best way to do so .
AdFree, AdBlock Plus, and Ad Away are all great options. Of course, if you aren't rooted, going into airplane mode works in a pinch too.

6. Back Up Your Phone for Seamless Transitions
When you move to a new Android device—or
restore your device to stock for any reason—you
can make your life a lot easier by backing up your apps and settings first. That way, you can get your entire setup back in just a few taps . If you aren't rooted, you can back up a few things like apps and data, but you won't necessarily be able to backup system apps and their data, or automate the entire process as well as Titanium Backup can.

5. Remove Preinstalled Crapware
Titanium Backup is good for more than just
backups, too. It can also uninstall that annoying, battery-draining, space-wasting crapware that comes preinstalled on so many phones these days —and, sadly, this feature is root-only . Freeze them first to make sure your phone operates normally without them, then delete them completely to free up that space. You'll be glad you did.

4. Tweak the Dark Corners of Android
If you're the kind of person that likes to fiddle
with every little feature—both on the surface and
under the hood—rooting is for you. Whether you
want to customize your keyboard layout with
something like Keyboard Manager or give yourself faster scrolling, improved multitasking, and extra themes with love-vendor My ROM , rooting gives you the power to tweak just about any corner you can think of. If you want to do it, chances are
someone over on a forum like XDA has created a mini-app or tweak that will help.

3. Flash a Custom Kernel
Some of Android's most under-the-hood tweaks
require a custom kernel, which you can only flash
with a rooted device. The kernel is responsible for helping your apps communicate with the
hardware of your phone, which means a custom
kernel can give you better performance, battery
life, and even extra features like Wi-Fi tethering (on unsupported phones), faster battery charging, and lots more. You can flash kernels manually or simplify the process with something like Kernel Manager.

2. Flash a Custom ROM
Okay, so you probably already know about this
one—but it's one of the best benefits of rooting. A custom ROM is basically a custom version of Android, and it truly changes how you use your phone. Some merely bring a stock version of
Android to non-stock phones, or later versions of Android to phones that don't have it yet. Some add a few handy features , some add lots of really unique features, and some change your operating system from head to toe . No matter what phone you have— even if it's a Nexus —we highly recommend checking out the custom ROMs out there. You won't be disappointed. Note: As some of you have noted, you don't actually need root access to flash a custom ROM—though you will need to
unlock your bootloader (a process that sometimes
comes bundled with root access). Still, it requires
freeing your device from manufacturer lockdowns,
so we've kept it in the list despite this technicality!

1. Truly Own Your Device
In the end, all of this boils down to one thing: you own your device, and you should be able to do
with it as you please. Certain manufacturers and
carriers try to keep that from happening, but with root access, you truly own your device and open yourself up to all the possibilities other parties try to block. Sure, there's some risk involved , and we don't usually recommend rooting other people's phones , but in the end, you can't put a price on true openness and control.

Health / 8 Benefits Of Coconut Water That You Didn't Know by Ericardo7(m): 6:56am On Jul 24, 2014
Coconut water is the ultimate thirst
quencher and offers a tasty alternative to
water. This pure liquid is packed with
nutrients that yield an array of health
benefits. Here are 8 Benefits of Coconut
Water that explain why it has become so
popular:

1. Aids in Weight-loss Efforts.
The fat content in coconut water is
extremely low, so generous quantities can
be consumed without the fear of
immediately packing on the pounds. It
also suppresses the appetite and makes
you feel full because of its rich nature.

2. Picture-Perfect Skin.
For those with acne or other blemishes on
the surface of the skin, topical application
of coconut water can go a great distance
as it has the ability to clear up and
subsequently tone the skin. It also
moisturizes the skin from within if
ingested orally and eliminates large
amounts of oil. This explains why
products such as facial creams, shampoos,
conditioners and lotions that contain
traces of coconut extract are more
effective.

3. The Ultimate Hangover Remedy.
Next time you overdo it and drink more
than your belly can handle, consume
coconut water to settle your stomach. It
will also replace those essential
electrolytes that exit the body if you
experience bouts of frequent urination and
vomiting.

4. Facilitates Digestion.
If you constantly encounter difficulty
during the digestion process, coconut
water may provide a source of relief.
Because of its high concentration of fiber,
it aids in the prevention of indigestion
and reduces the occurrence of acid reflux.

5. Boosts Hydration.
The ingredients in coconut water are way
more effective at hydrating the human
body than those of sports and energy
drinks. During rigorous exercise or
extended periods of physical activity, the
human body loses mineral-rich fluids.
However, coconut water serves as an
excellent replacement medium with 294
mg of potassium and 5 mg of natural
sugar per glass, unlike your favorite
sports drink that only contains half of
the potassium content and five times the
amount of processed sugar. In addition,
the sodium count is only 25 mg, which is
relatively low compared to the 41 and 20
mg found in sports drinks and energy
drinks respectively.

6. Reduces Blood Pressure.
In many instances, a disproportionate
level of electrolytes can result in high
blood pressure. Because coconut water
contains an adequate supply of each, it
can be used as a balancing mechanism.
In some instances, it is recommended
that coconut water be consumed at the
start of each day to foster the balance of
these electrolytes.

7. Rich in Nutrients.
Unlike any other beverage on the market,
coconut water contains five essential
electrolytes that are present in the human
body. These include: calcium, magnesium,
phosphorous, potassium and sodium.
Because of its unique composition,
coconut water can be enjoyed by
individuals with varying medical
conditions.

8. Compatible with Human Blood.
Since it is isotonic to human plasma,
coconut water can be used in extreme
emergencies to quickly rehydrate the
human body if administered
intravenously. It is not uncommon for
the drink to be used in poorer, third-
world countries to save human lives.
