The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Thursday threatened to ask workers to stay at home if the federal government does not find immediate solution to the recurring problem of petroleum products scarcity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other parts of the country. NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said the perennial shortage of petroleum products, especially petrol, made it increasingly difficult for workers to get to their work stations on time, resulting in the loss of huge man-hours. “Scarcity of petroleum products has caused long queues at most fuel stations that have fuel, while many more closed their gates with claims of non-availability of the products,” Mr. Wabba said. “The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, must immediately intervene in the current hardship imposed by the scarcity of petroleum products. We will be compelled to tell workers to stay at home should the scarcity persists,” he added. He said the greatest frustration has been that Nigerians were yet to be told by government what the cause of the current scarcity was, adding that Labour believes government would not allow any individual or corporate organisations sabotage efforts to restore sanity and good governance in all facets of our society. Mr. Wabba said it was obvious the on-going fuel scarcity was a calculated sabotage by petroleum products marketers to sell the products at high prices for more profits. “Petroleum products, especially petrol is key to our economy as it is what powers commuters, including workers, offices and businesses. The delays motorists contend with in long queues at petrol stations have led to loss of unimaginable man hours which have impacted negatively on our economy,” he pointed out. The NLC president called on the government to strongly intervene, by sending out appropriate agencies, especially the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, to enforce the sale of the products, as some fuel marketers were found to be hoarding the commodity. Reiterating the call by Labour for the speedy reactivation of local production of petroleum products, Mr. Wabba said Nigerians would continue to be held hostage by global economic manipulations if the country remained tied to importation of petroleum products, despite the availability of sufficient resources to produce fuel for local consumption and export. He blamed the poor situation on bad governance, misplaced priorities and corruption, which have almost killed the petroleum industry, adding that government must think seriously about revamping the industry within one year. Citing the examples of Niger Republic, where one of the best refineries was reportedly built within a year, the NLC President said nothing stops the Buhari administration from doing same in Nigeria. He said despite the poor state of the country’s four refineries, they were still considered some of the best in the world, whose capacities could be turned around and upgraded through an effective turn around maintenance, TAM. “The refineries are not beyond repairs. They have been abandoned to ensure Nigerians are ambushed by proponents of privatization who believe every sector must be privatized. Those advocating for the sale of the refineries are waiting to buy them, because they know the refineries are still one of the best,” he said. He said the NLC was convinced the recurring scarcity of petroleum products was part of the roadmap designed by forces who wish to hoodwink Nigerians into accepting privatisation of the refineries. The NLC, he warned, would not accept any arrangement where major oil companies operating in Nigeria would ship the country’s crude for refining in their refineries in other countries and sell refined products to the country through importers of petroleum products. Government, he said, must demonstrate seriousness in the country’s collective affairs through decisive interventions in revamping the petroleum industry and stamping out corruption. “We can’t continue to be import dependent and expect our economy to grow,” Mr. Wabba stated. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/business/business-news/199476-fuel-scarcity-labour-threatens-issue-stay-home-order-workers.html |
Clover, a South African beverage line responsible for the production of Tropika fruit juice, says it is withdrawing future investments in the Nigerian market. Clover becomes the second South African company in two weeks to toe this line. In its fiscal year-end profit/loss posting, the company said the financial crisis in Nigeria is to blame for its withdrawal from the Nigerian market. “The weakened global economy and the impact of low economic growth forecasts and commodity prices have had a significant impact on the risks facing Clover in the rest of Africa,” the financial statement read. “The current financial crisis experienced in Nigeria, which is fuelled by low oil price, is a further cause of concern, thus the Group has decided to withdraw from future investments in Nigeria.” The company said it would be looking to the rest of South eastern Africa for future investments. “The Group will continue to expand its operations within the Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland region, and will continue to pursue export opportunities in Africa where the currency risks can be mitigated. “The capital previously earmarked for Africa will no longer be spent. It is anticipated that planned selling price increases will absorb anticipated inflationary cost increases in the second half of the year, as not all selling price increases were realised in the first half.” The current foreign exchange policy employed by the Nigerian government has often been identified to be triggering withdrawal of investments from the country. Earlier in the year, South African retail line, Truworths pulled out of the Nigerian market, owing to the economic crisis in the nation. International pundits say the comments of Michael Mark, CEO of Truworths, about the economy show a sign that President Muhammadu Buhari’s attempts to boost local industry are hurting foreign investment. “We were unable to operate the stores properly any longer because we were unable to send merchandise to the stores because there’s regulation preventing that,” Mark had said. https://www.today.ng/business/88199/another-safrican-company-pulls-out-of-nigeria |

Fans of Kano Pillars football club are reported to have thrown pebbles, pure water sachets and slippers at the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Sunday, February 29. Ganduje, who attended the football game that saw Kano Pillars defeat Wikki Tourists of Bauchi State, 2:1, had to be rushed out of the stadium by his security aides. As soon as the final whistle was blown, the angry mob were said to have chanted “Ba mayi” (we don’t want you) at the governor and his entourage and subsequently proceeded to throw objects at the governors vehicle. According to a source who spoke to Sahara Reporters, the mob action was due to frustrations that have built up overtime because the club management and state government have failed to release funds to recruit new players for the club. Furthermore, the mob are said to have been angry over the appointment of Kabiru Baita as chairman of Kano pillars, with many accusing him of planting hate in the club. The Kano state government is yet to comment on the development. http://ynaija.com/kano-state-governor-stoned-by-angry-mob/?platform=hootsuite |

A Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court on Tuesday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to release former Aide-De-Camp to ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, Ojogbane Adegbe. Justice Yusuf Halilu in his ruling asked the EFCC to release Adegbe on bail on liberal terms pending his arraignment in court for any offence. Adegbe has been in custody of the anti-graft agency since February 11, for allegedly collecting N10bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA. The sum was alleged to have been diverted by ONSA from a Signature Bonus Account in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The N10billion is believed to have been diverted from oil receipts as follows: USD5.0M(November 14,2014); $47m( November 27, 2014); Euro 4.0M (December 3, 2014) and Euro 1.6M(December 24, 2014). Adegbe is challenging his arrest and continued detention by the anti-graft agency in a fundamental right suit before the FCT High Court. Justice Halilu had earlier fixed today for ruling in the Fundamental Human Rights suit. http://naijaexclusive.net/2016/03/court-orders-immediate-release-of-jonathans-ex-adc-adegbe/ |

Angry youths on Monday blocked the convoy of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State in Minna, the state capital and complained about the hardships being faced by residents of the state. The governor’s convoy had obeyed traffic light on the ever-busy Bosso Road near the Obasanjo Shopping Centre when the youths spotted him. They rushed to his vehicle making uncomplimentary remarks about the actions of his administration. At a stage, the governor wind down the side glasses of his metallic black Prado Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and exchanged words with them. The vociferous youths told the governor that civil servant were no longer paid their salaries as at when due and that most of the water taps in the state had dried up since he came into office. Apparently justifying the policies of his administration, Gov Bello told them that his administration was still trying to put things right. He said once the investigation on the financial dealings of the last administration was completed, the situation would improve.
