Politics › Our United Nation Assembly Trip, The Flaws And The 3 Lessons To Learn by erunz(op): 4:49pm On Sep 28, 2015
So far so good, the 70th UN Assembly General meeting will be rapping up in few days especially after the address of the Russian President Vladimir V Putin on SYRIA. As a country, how have we been represented? The UN general assembly is a yearly opportunity for countries to present their interest before the global world. It is an image boaster. Permit me to call it a “market” where buyers and sellers meet for transaction. It is not enough for us as a people to celebrate our pluses in terms of business opportunities, aids and general development but also try to reduce or manage our minuses.

So far, our experience has been a mixture of positive and controversial events that have booked places as international headlines. Since the positive impact of it may take some time before we begin to see results, I will like to address some of the flaws experienced so far and we need to learn for the sake of the future.

1. OUR UN MISSION TEAM

This is one of the flaws of the trip and everyone culpable should be sanctioned with immediate effect. It started with the sub-assembly meeting on IDPs which involved Nigeria, Chad Niger and Cameroon. We are the worst hit especially in terms of lives lost, displacement etc since inception of this menace called Bokoharam. Yet, non-represented Nigeria in that meeting. We were referred as “un-serious”people. The Chairman of the meeting, Stephen O Brien made it loud in the international media, Daily Post to be precised his disappointment of our absence in such a high profiled meeting. According to Sahara Reporter , another avoidable embarrassing moment was when it was time for each head of state to meet one on one especially in the area of handshakes with the Catholic Pope Francis. We were disallowed because we got there late. So we were not accredited to have such an experience. That might sound petty but it speaks volumes especially when it comes to perception, organization and how we handle our international affairs as a people. The question is who is in charge of our itinerary, logistics and organization? All these are quite avoidable.

2. OUR MEDIA TEAM
I don't know if this was due to some level of naivety on the part of the presidential media team or just a disconnection somewhere especially in the recent time. Mr Garba Shehu and Mr Femi Adesina have not been managing this aspect very well as expected. At the moment, they seem to be having a conflicting report in the middle of the crisis especially on reason for our absence in the meeting for IDPs. There was a pure lack of harmony. It even got to a point that it was the former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Fayemi that was attending to vital media issues. Who gave him the authority to speak on behalf of the Federal Government? What post is he handling at the moment? Initially, they said we were not invited. Other time they said they had to go for one that was more important. What could be more important than the security of lives and properties of the people?

3. THE NUMBER OF DELEGATES TOO SMALL

Sahara-reporters made it clear that the former President Jonathan went to the 68th General Assembly with about 600 delegates. I don’t have a clear picture of how the assembly sub meetings run in the UN but I can categorically tell anyone that various meetings are usually held within that period space and it involves quite a number of delegates. Why did the President go with 22? Was it to save cost? Or was it done to have a political score point? The reason best known to the President. But I think this actually backfired. There was no way 22-Man delegates can be that stretched to meet up with all the meetings which most of them run simultaneously in the UN. It is good to save cost especially at this time. But at times you lose it more in other various forms. Everything is not always about cash. May be the President should have gone there with at least 50 if not 100. It also showed clearly the role of ministers in such an event. Unfortunately, we don't have any at the moment.

The flaws must be managed thoroughly to prevent a future occurrence.

God Bless Nigeria

Politics › Oyegun Summons NWC Meeting Over Buhari’s Ministerial List And Saraki/tinubu Feud by erunz(op): 2:43pm On Sep 28, 2015
Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has summoned the emergency meeting of National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to hold today, Monday according to media reports.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial list expected to reach the Senate this week and the face-off between the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, tops the agenda for the meeting.

El-Rufai was alleged to have made an uncomplimentary remark on Osinbajo, who protested and eventually walked out of a meeting, which had Buhari in attendance.

Before leaving, a furious Osinbajo allegedly told Buhari: “I am an elected Vice President and would not sit down here and allow a governor to insult me.”

A member of the NWC revealed that the leadership of APC was not comfortable with the incident and would not sit idly while the Vice President was being treated as a puppet.

The source noted that the crises in APC, especially the management of the party’s success at the general elections, was becoming a big headache for members.

Another issue is the power rift between former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former governor of Osun State, Bisi Akande and national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, over who becomes APC Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman.

Also to be discussed at the meeting is the feud between Tinubu and the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki.

Similarly, the disrupted Bayelsa governorship primary held on September 22 will be raised.

The outcome has led to a media war between Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole and former governor of Bayelsa State, Timi Sylva.

Politics › So You Want To Be Minister? Read This And Despair by erunz(op): 2:25pm On Sep 28, 2015
“The Ministers are there to make a lot of noise; for the politicians to make a lot of noise…People from different constituencies want to see their people directly in government, and see what they can get out of it.”President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I had rather be right than President.”

Economy
Economy
Henry Clay, 1777-1852, letter to Senator Preston of South Carolina, 1839.

When I first read that statement, by Clay, in a course on American Government in my second year as an undergraduate in 1965, my first reaction was “this guy must be crazy, who would not want to be American President at any price?” But, I was young then, and courses in Philosophy, and especially Ethics, had not been undertaken to sharpen my intellect and morals. Now, I know that position, power and wealth are not the only things for which people must strive at all costs. Above all, a man must aim for self-respect; he must stand for something or fall for anything. After reading that statement from President Buhari, nothing should induce any self-respecting Nigerian, male or female, to accept a ministerial appointment – if it is offered. But, I am jumping the gun. Let me go back a few weeks.

Shortly after Buhari appointed several people in August, a sage, and one of my mentors and heroes taunted me by asking “Dele, what do you think of Buhari’s choice of cabinet which excludes the South West?”

“But, Buhari has not appointed his Ministers, he had selected his advisers”, I said. “It shows how naïve you are; Ministers are mere errand boys, the important decisions are made by the kitchen cabinet and your people are not there.”

Despite the strength of the logic, my mind still refused to accept it. A week after that sobering and deeply disturbing conversation, Chief Ogunlewe, former Minister of works under Obasanjo also announced that “Buhari has formed his cabinet”. He was the Minister who announced to Nigerians in 2007 that Obasanjo’s government had rehabilitated 500 Nigerian roads. Asked to name them he refused. That falsehood was exposed by the fact that the road leading to Ogunlewe’s home town, Ijede, on the Ikorodu-Epe expressway was not touched at all – while he was busy with 500 phantom roads rehabilitated. But, despite that, Ogunlewe made the point that Ministers are visitors to the seat of power; most decisions are made by “Advisers” for Ministers to execute.

Still, I clung stubbornly to the belief that, under Buhari’s change programme, Ministers would be appointed and valued for their intellect, competence, character, work rates and integrity. The statement above, credited to Buhari, changed all my perceptions about the role Ministers will play in this government. Even before their appointment, they have been visited with the sort of contempt which the office of Minister in any government does not deserve. They have been told that they will be regarded as people who “are there to make noise” and who are “in government and see what they can get out of it”. Taken together, those views of Ministers characterized them as noisy parasites. Can any self-respecting individual, not desperate for a job, accept an appointment based on that view of his/her role in government?

Henceforth any Minister in this administration should not be offended if he is called a noisemaker or vulture– after all, his boss had tagged him/her with that disgraceful appellation before taking office.

Let me end this article by recalling a personal example. In the mid-1980s, as a very successful Marketing Manager with North Brewery, I was offered a job with another brewery in the south, without applying for it. My take home pay increased by 200% and as a young man eagerly accepted the offer. Within nine months the new brewery’s sales had increased by over 300%. Of all the top managers, I was the darling of the Chairman, who during our quarterly meetings routinely insulted other managers; sometimes the maledictions passed to their parents (“your father”, “your family” etc). But, because the man paid so well, none of the managers wanted to leave.

One day, after one of my colleagues had his parents and grand-parents thoroughly abused, I asked the fellow why he did not quit. His answer was “Dele where would I find another job paying so well?” It then became clear to me. In this company we were trading insults rained on our parents for money. I would have none of it. I promised to walk out the day it happened to me. I would rather eat sand than accept that.

It happened soon enough. We went for budget presentation for the coming year. I presented the marketing budget including advertising expenditure. The advertising agency we used was 100% owned by the Chairman and the expenditure was prepared in collaboration with its Managing Director, Cornelius Tay, (later of C-Tay Agency). The Chairman took one look at the advert proposal and flared up in his usual manner. I got up, excused myself, went to the parking lot, drove out, got to the office and resigned my appointment.

They waited for me and discovered that I was not returning to the meeting. When the brewery MD came to the office and asked me to report to the Chairman’s office, next day, I told him “No, I no longer work for him; he cannot because of money insult my parents”. Later, in life, I added myself to the list. My attitude about wealth is summed up this way. “The true measure of your wealth is how much you will be worth when you have lost

all your money”. No job is worth one’s self-respect. NONE.

Politics › Something More Dangerous Than Boko Haram Now In Nigeria (A Must Read) by erunz(op): 10:49am On Sep 23, 2015
Ikechukwu Aduba, former Delta state police commissioner, has insisted there is something more dangerous than the dreaded Boko Haram sect in Nigeria.

The retired police officer raised alarm over the illegal activities of Fulani cattle rearers and urged the man incharge of the country, President Muhammadu Buhari to address the situation before it is too late.

Ex-CP Aduba explained why these guys are worse than Boko Haram:

“It is a serious issue, more complicated than the terrorists activities in the Northeast. Boko Haram war is a minor issue when compared with what we are going to experience in the hands of Fulani cattle rearers in the nearest future if the issue is not addressed.

“In some places, especially in Delta state where I served as the commissioner of police, many people cannot go to the farm anymore for fear of being attacked in the bush by cattle rearers. Many women have been raped in front of their husbands and children. Many people killed by the cattle rearers. It is a pathetic situation if cattle eat up people’s crops in the farm and the farm owner challenges them, it is a big problem. If the farm owner keeps quite, his toil for the year will be in vain. It is a wearisome situation.

“The action is affecting agricultural businesses as communities are afraid to go to the farm for the fear that one day, all their labour for one year will be eaten up in one day by cattle. If a community is afraid that their loved may go to the farm and not return, how do you expect them to go to the farm where they may meet their untimely death? This is a serious and pathetic situation that is worse than Boko Haram. They will soon overrun the entire country.

“I want to advice that President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly should constitute a committee that would look into the issue. My suggestion is that the cattle rearers should be confined in gracing reserves and ranches. They should be made to stay in a particular area and not to wander from place to place.

“If you look at it critically, we don’t eat beef more than other countries of the world. We don’t have cow more than other countries. We don’t export cow, yet in the countries that even export cow, there is absolute peace because they don’t take their cattle to places that they are not supposed to take them. The Nigerian government should take a decisive stands on the matter or the keg of gun powder will explode and the government will now not be able to tackle the menace of the cattle rearers.”

Politics › Saraki’s Travail: Buhari’s Connection, Tinubu’s Input - VANGUARD by erunz(op): 8:54am On Sep 23, 2015
By Rotimi Fasan
THESE are not the best of times for Bukola Saraki, Senate President and chairman of the so-called 8th National Assembly that has done virtually nothing about its law-making responsibilities, but has continued to rip Nigerians off collecting huge allowances for practically sitting on its palm and watching the sun go down each day since it was inaugurated last June.

Mr. Saraki’s National Assembly has spent more time on recess than in the chambers of the Assembly, no thanks to the leadership struggle that has bedeviled the place since the intrigue that brought Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, his counterpart in the House of Representatives, into office.

As if that was not enough, Saraki has now been dragged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for failure to fully declare his assets as required of elected officers.

For failing to appear before the CCT on the day slated for hearing the case against him, chairman of the CCT, Justice Danladi Umar, has ordered the arrest of Saraki via a bench warrant that the police claims it is yet to receive. Saraki has himself taken the preemptive action, through his counsel, Joseph Daudu, of challenging the jurisdiction of the CCT to hear his case.

Saraki’s latest troubles started on the rather fateful day of September 11, 2015, when the Federal Government filed a 13-count charge against him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Among other infractions, Saraki was accused of failure to declare ownership of properties on choice locations in Lagos and Abuja.

These include property on Plot 2A, Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos; Plot 2482, Cadastral Zone A06 at No. 1 Tagus Street, Maitama, Abuja and Plot 2481, Cadastral Properties Limited at No. 3 Tagus Street, also in Maitama, Abuja. Although Saraki is also required to declare his assets as part of the process leading on to his election as two-time senator before his election as senate president, the infraction for which he is being called to account now dates back to his terms as governor of Kwara State.

Which means Saraki has been required to declare and must have declared his assets a number of times since he made the declaration that is now proving troublesome for him.

This cannot but lead to the reasonable question of what the Federal Government, or more appropriately, what the Code of Conduct Bureau has been doing all this while asking no questions of Saraki? Did they just wake up to the realisation that the man didn’t make full disclosure when he declared his assets years back as governor of Kwara State?

Or is the CCB like the Economic and Financial Crime Commission that has suddenly woken up from its deep slumber and is now going after its prey after years of ignoring them under the previous administration of Goodluck Jonathan- is the CCB like the EFCC merely doing the ‘eye-service’ of supporting the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s fight against corruption? What was this body doing all this while, Nigerians would be asking?

In a country where the rumour mill is never silent and where conspiracy theories are not in short supply- in fact they are the first refuge of scoundrels with houses not just cupboards full of skeletons- in such a country like ours where meanings are quickly read into actions no matter the merit of such actions, people have been peddling stories of Bukola Saraki being a victim of persons more powerful than him in the polity.

High on the conspiracy list is the president, Muhammadu Buhari who has been accused of showing barely-concealed disdain for Saraki’s leadership of the National Assembly. First to tow this line of argument is the Peoples Democratic Party, whose spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, himself under serious accusations of corruption by members of his own party, has accused the Buhari presidency of despotism bordering on a desire to annex the powers of the legislative arm of government, and disdain for the principle of separation of powers.

The reason the PDP would argue in this fashion is not difficult to see. It all dates back to the self-same intrigue that brought Saraki, a member of the All Progressives Congress, into office with the active connivance of his erstwhile comrades in the PDP, his former party. This was against the position of his party that had names of other party members penciled down for the leadership of the National Assembly. The APC therefore demanded their resignation to no avail. While the party was able to reach a compromise with Dogara at the House, the situation in the Senate has since been deadlocked with no solution.

Buhari like other leaders of the APC has in principle refused to recognise the leadership of the Senate ever since, insisting that Saraki must tow the party line. This is the brief story behind the finger-pointing by the PDP in the latest case against Saraki. It is just one step away from the claims of other internet warriors that have fingered Bola Tinubu, another leader of the APC, as being responsible for Saraki’s troubles. While the CCB has to be seen for the hypocrite it is for turning a blind eye to Saraki’s alleged failure to comply fully with the demands of the body, we should not be blind to the facts of the matter.

These are best summed up by the following question: is Saraki at fault or not? In other words, did Bukola Saraki hold back facts about the ownership of the properties in question?

Since the effect of the law for failure in this instance is not time-barred, since there is no specific limit to when charges can be filed, what Bukola Saraki should do is show that he did not own the properties attributed to him at the time he was supposed to be their owner. Perhaps, he does not even own any such properties in the afore-mentioned locations and has probably never been to those places.

All he needs to do, and which his counsel who has promised to produce him before Justice Umar had his plea to the tribunal to set aside its warrant of arrest been accepted- what Mr. Daudu and other supporters of Saraki ought to tell him, is that he should first of all clear his name rather than allowing opposition party members to politicise a serious matter of law.

Saraki and Buhari or even Bola Tinubu may not see eye to eye on the question of who leads the National Assembly but that cannot and should not be the explanation he has to offer for the charges levelled against him. He should in the first instance prove his bonafides and take on his accusers on the point of law by proving his innocence before launching any claim of a witch-hunt against his person or interest.
