Nigerians should be remembered that just yesterday Efcc invited Akpabio saying they got a petition against him. My question is why have Efcc failed to invite or question Ameachi?

The decision to forcefully task the twenty local government Areas of Lagos State to contribute N50million each to fund Kogi State Governorship election, following the reluctance by the Governors of the All Progressive Congress to contribute N100million each has received bashing from coalition of civil societies and well meaning Lagosians.

This came under attack at a press conference addressed by Tunde Babarinsa, Chairman Coalition of Civil Societies, Lagos State and Alabi Oyewole, Representatives of well meaning Lagosians over the N1 billion extortion from the limited funds availaible to the local government areas.

The groups at the press conferences, held in Lagos lamented the over bearing burden placed on the local councils over an election that does not have bearing with the state.

It would be recalled that the 23 state governors of the APC had refused the call for them to contribute N100million each as mandatory contribution to fund the Kogi State Governorship election.

The governors at their forum in Abuja, frowned at the “unhealthy contribution” on the premise that they have several financial burdens to shoulder in their various states, even as they faulted the mandatory contribution in this period of dwindled allocations when they are unable to meet their obligations to workers in their states.

A source who will want to remain anonymous, said the Governors of Oyo, Osun and Kwara States in particular outrightly refused the contribution, and in the process, staged a walked out of the meeting. One of the governors was quoted saying that N100million would go a long way in assisting them meet some important responsibilities in their respective states, rather than contributing to a state election where the candidate is alleged to be unpopular and was reluctant to issues of the party until he became a flag bearer.

It would be recalled that the governments of Oyo, Osun and Kwara states are owing workers salaries, even with the bailout the states got from the Federal Government, thus making their State governors and others to backout from the forceful contribution.

The Kogi State Governorship Election is slated for November between Capt Idris Wada of the PDP, a man described as a prudent manger of resources and Prince Abubakar Audu, of the APC, perceived to have the tendency to loot the state treasure, following his record as former governor of the state.
Local Government Councils in Lagos State it was gathered had earlier contributed the sum of N200million for James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives, Representing Ikeja-Lagos Federal Constituency, who is the running mate to Prince Audu. Faleke, a two time chairman of Ojodu Council, was nominated as Audu’s running mate by APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Consequently, the Lagos councils were further tasked to fund the Kogi Election following the reluctance and refusal by the APC governors to raise funds for the campaign. The contribution according to Babarinsa is on and to be completed before October 31. Alleging that poaching resources from the Lagos treasury to fund election in other states had become a merchandise for the merchants of political trade who double as the end beneficiaries of the spoils from the tolls from other lands, they called on the EFCC and other anti graft agencies to beam their searchlight on the finances of Lagos State, with the view to protecting the people’s commonwealth.

Christianity Etc › Buhari’s Ministerial List Shows That He Belongs To Somebody – Cardinal Okogie by erunz(op): 6:17pm On Oct 17, 2015
For over four decades, he held the nation spell-bound with his activism and catechism. Ordained first as a priest on December 11, 1966, consecrated as a titular Bishop in August 1971, Archbishop in 1973 and a Cardinal in October 2003, Anthony Olubunmi Okogie became the voice for the voiceless and for years took advantage of his leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as well as Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria to speak against the ills in government and even dared the military regimes of Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha that many leaders dreaded to cross their path then.

Without mincing words, his activities and episcopal status attracted to him the high and mighty in the society. His home and office were like a pilgrimage site besieged by all shades of Nigerians; from the lowly church members, family relations to business tycoons and heads of governments across all tiers.

At 79 and retired since May 2012, Okogie appears to be facing the other side of fame; loneliness. Indeed, he confirmed this in this with Saturday Sun. But beyond this, the cleric remains as fiery and critical as ever. To him, events of the last four months in Nigeria have shown that there is no difference between the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. He spoke with VERA WISDOM-BASSEY. Excerpts:

At 55, what are those things you think the government should put in place for us to be a good and prosperous nation?

Any time I look at Nigeria, I feel like weeping, you are asking me of celebrating at 80, am satisfied the way God has kept me, the way am going, people don’t believe am still strong. In the nation, we have to be careful just like crossing the road. You look left, right and look again before you move, otherwise you will be crushed. That has been my principle, what is money after all, what do you gain from it, women what do you get from it. Women, what do they get from the men? When you look at someone and you fall in love with the person and the next moment you said you don’t like her again. She is not a cloth, it’s not a cloth that you can say this is old. No, she is a human being like you, why can’t you use your head before going into it. A man walked into my office one day and was talking that his wife is old, and I said you too you’re old. The way the woman is today is not the way you met her many years ago, so why won’t you want her. So, when you look at Nigeria at 55 and those who are long enough in this world, as Nigeria is, you will feel sorry for the country. So also there was a time Ghanaians were even laughing at us, when things were going well, they were all in Nigeria even the days of Nkrumah, so it’s selfishness and the root cause of that is money, and greed, because when you have money and others who have it and they are wasting it, you who have it, they want to kill you, and destroy you. These are examples. Our heavenly father is there and standing with arms akimbo watching us as Nigerians, saying look at my children the way they are killing themselves. Everyone wants to make it, the good Lord that brought me out of my mother’s womb as small as I was then, the same person will take care of me. So, as parents, we are to bring up our children the right way to go and show them the way, but they won’t. So, many things are now standing on the way, favouritism, people lobbying to become the friend of this and that. For instance, look at the ministerial nominees.

I was coming to that, how do you see the ministerial list, especially after the long wait?

When I was listening to the broadcast of the incumbent president during his swearing–in, I beat my chest, can this man say, those things were written by him? I ask myself is this the Buhari I knew 2011, that wrote this? Even though it was written for him, can he not sit down and read and re-read again, and ask himself, if he can follow all those things written down. Looking at the statement he made ‘I belong to everybody but nobody’. Look at the list of ministers, he belongs to nobody, I laughed. It means he belonged to APC.

And with the list, they are now trying to pay back those who were their bag carriers, that is what am seeing, that is not Nigeria which we fought for, it’s painful. So, what is coming ahead if care is not taken and this crop of people if they don’t work hand in hand, we are going to have a bad future, because the youths now, they are just waiting, they are now saying that the elderly ones in this country, can’t be trusted, they are looking for their time and when that time comes, they will not carry arms, they will do it in such a way that you will not even know that they are the one.

The people who have served in different capacities should have given room for the younger ones to go in and serve. OBJ used to say I sit down dey look (laugh), I don’t know what he has to say to all this, but I know he has a part in it. I said it loud and clear, how come this one say I brought my list, am hearing this from the common people. I know when they come down they say all sort of things, how many list do you want, how many different people brought their list? And yet you said, you belong to nobody, how can you not be confused, when you said you’re waiting for an angel, to come and rule the nation, I laughed. Out of the abundant of the heart, the mouth speaketh. If I were in his shoes, (Buhari) I tell you, this is his last time. He tried it thrice and now that the good Lord brought him back, can’t he use this opportunity to do something better?

One thing am seeing again from what is going on, there is acrimony, during the campaign they were just attacking one another, that happened then. People who said they have gone to secondary school, not to talk of university are behaving this way, is it how to keep the nation together? Where is the patriotism in that list? How can you tell me that these people are going to work?

How do you see their integrity?

I am not God, but from their previous performances, am afraid. When you see the states the way they operated then, not to talk of now they are putting on a bigger scale that they are going to do well, it doesn’t follow, Nigeria is a big nation. Looking at this from the spiritual angle, there are a lot of killings on-going, and it’s becoming more than what we could chew.

As a minister of God and elder statesman, what is your advice to the president regarding insurgency. Has he done his best so far?

No, no, it’s not the best, I know that he’s going to win, because I already see the signs, he will win, anyway that was one of the reasons why, those that elected him, did so. The leaders and the party members did so, I don’t know, because the killings are getting too much and not only that foreigners and foreign nations were coming but sooner or later, it will come to an end. What the Boko Haram people are doing is that they are diminishing fast, but what they are doing is sending the small number they have to go to sensitive places to throw their bomb to show they are still alive but very soon, by the grace of God they will be combated.

That means you give kudos to Buhari’s administration for at least achieving something?

That is one of the things I think, so far so good, as I can see.

And you’re optimistic about the December deadline?

I don’t look at deadline, he’s not God, I knew that sooner or later, with the way they are going about it, they will win. There have to be causalities here and there, but signs of victory are there, more than before.

Looking at the tussle going on in the National Assembly, what would you say regarding the credibility of the present leadership, what is your take?

They are unpatriotic, that is the major thing, they are more or less partying (that is party members) they don’t look at this nation at all, they seem not to know that without Nigeria, they will not have a party. That is the trouble. Am of this one, this one brought me into the party and I must serve this person. Putting blame on others, it is uncalled for. Election has come and gone, it is now time for them to seat down as a body and look at Nigeria and then work, but they are not doing it. Other things will come in, we should try and be reading the back page of The Guardian and hear the youth talking. What are the older ones looking for there in the government seat in the first place?

When OBJ was looking for third term, sorry I have to mention him, what did he forget that he’s going there to take, and after that, they (old leaders) are coming back, what are they looking for? This beats my imagination, he himself (Buhari) has been there thrice and failed, and now that God has brought him back, APC has brought him back and look at what is happening. They have tried PDP and now decided to try APC and know what they can do.

Are you disappointed?

Yes, am disappointed in both parties, not just APC alone. When you look at what is going on, what is happening is just the tip of the iceberg. They have not started work at all. Look at the way they selected their members, there are some people who put on APC cloth, they are wolf in sheep clothings, they are PDP down, down their mind and they came out as APC. That is why they are now having the Saraki and there are so many of them still there, are we having an Assembly and senators as gang of robbers or gang of rascals. Is it what we are having now? If someone is to do that to their family, would they be happy, not to talk of a big nation like Nigeria. Buhari is going to have a tough time with this set of people, am telling you, am not a prophet. The game of Saraki, I put it in the middle. If these people begin to work, we will see and hear wonders. I hope they won’t drag us down to the earth. Look at our football team, the only thing that brings us together, look at the good old days, you hear Nigerian football as one of the best in the world, but today what has become of it?

Would you want to recommend ways we can achieve some synergy, so that this administration will not fail between the executive and the legislative arms of government?

The only synergy we can have, is for both to agree to work together. If they don’t work together, the unity is at stake. They should not see themselves as a PDP man or APC man, that is what they are doing now, unless they agree to work together, if they work as a party person there will be problem. Honesty, they say is the best policy, we need honest men that can rule this country and take us to the promise land. Am not condemning all of them, No. Now the talk of petroleum, the president is talking of handling the sector himself, there is nothing bad there, afterall OBJ tried it, soldier to soldier, it’s in their blood.

Is that not the reason he can’t trust anybody to manage it, seeing what happened to the former petroleum minister?

What I will say to that is this, it is very, very bitter to see somebody we have been reading about carrying such amount of money being laundered, that is enough to kill one. For me, I don’t just sit down at home, I also relate with the people in my environment when I want to cut my hair, I go to the barbers shop, because I want to see how people live and make their money, and feel what they go through and what they talk about the nation, so I don’t just sit down at home all the time. From the public you get the truth about the state of the nation. I learnt so much from my father, I could have been turned away from the war front, but God refused it. The way things are going is not good for us as a nation. It’s not right the way things are going, and they are parading themselves as minister, with some saying, this is my third term in office, even those who have been there before this régime. And some making comments of what they will have in their ministry and what they will not have in their ministry. Are they God or head of State? That is what is happening now. People are already challenging him of wanting to be the minister of petroleum, eventhough the constitution is there to be followed.

What are those things in our system, that make those in power to be corrupt. Is there anything about the system that promotes corruption?

Sorry madam to cut you short, the scripture is there, love of money, when one is in power and you are in charge of money, frivolity is number one, you want to favour people, always try to show off, of what they have or wear, and anything you have, you want to throw it away, and if you don’t get it, you’re not happy. Tribalism is another. And the money you haven’t gotten, you begin to spend. Another is party system, we are in the same party, they have not helped our party people, dishonesty, the devil is very, very bad, and powerful, he knows our weak points, that is why we have to guide ourselves, this flesh we have is where most of our problems lies, we have the spirit and we have the body. We have the good spirit and the bad. As St Paul told us, the good spirit will talk in low tone, and the bad one will be high. For how long, that is why I said am afraid of this present group of ministers, they performed well in their various states. Okay, this is the reason some of them are being appointed, because this one has been with me, he has worked with me, listens to me and now we must bring him to come and work with you. This is the one I know, whether he can do it or not, and if the person disappoints you, you said I never knew he is like this. He has to hide himself, so as to get to the position he is requesting for. Some of them nominated are saying, don’t worry we are waiting for them, until we get there, that has been the comment I have been hearing and some of them say yes, this opportunity, we have been waiting for, and we must make it. These are people who will rule Nigeria and are saying they want to help Buhari, they just sit down somewhere and are talking of how they will make it when they get to power.

Is it not because this government makes money available for governance?

That is one thing I said, cutting down on others is not healthy, rather look at other nations they are the richest. Look at what other nations are getting; compare it to what we have in Nigeria. Look at some of our graduates who want to work instead no job, they rather go into robbery, and on this, they try to escape, this are cases of people who want to make it by all means.

When Okonjo Iweala was also critized, she was satisfied with what she was doing in the World Bank before OBJ went to bring her down to Nigeria. And as they said there is corruption in the country and if not handled well, it will destroy the nation. To buttress your question, did they not rob it on her, that she is corrupt? And as the good Lord will have it she is now elevated to another position. Let them go and bring her, she will never come back again. She has learnt her lesson. So, this is it.

Sir, how is life after retirement?

Look at it now, I won’t say am enjoying every moment of it, because people keep coming in and asking me questions, wanting my attention here and there. Apart from that, I have more time to look back into my life which is more important to me. Every evening before I go to bed, I just ask myself question, ‘Tony, how have you faired today?’ How did you spend the day, these are the things, this is how life is. You must always try to look back. I will come like a thief in the night that is what God says. One billionaire, who died recently, where are all his money, what did he do to his own nation, Nigeria?

Politics › Fayose Arrests Road Safety Official For Traffic Offence by erunz(op): 4:41am On Oct 17, 2015
Governor Ayodele Fayose Friday arrested an operative of the Federal Road Safety Corps at Ikere Ekiti, for flouting traffic rule.
Fayose, who went to inaugurate the completion of the Ado-Ikere-Iju dualisation and the down-town market stalls in the town, stopped his convoy at Oke –Ikere area of the town and ordered that the man be stopped and his car seized.

The road safety operative, who was identified as Mr Alabi, was driving against the traffic in his Peugeot 505 to Ikere Ekiti , had taken the left side of the road with intention to dodge the dilapidated portion of the dual carriage way, which infuriated the governor who was on that rough portion of the road.

Fayose immediately ordered that the vehicle should be taken to the office of the Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency in Ado Ekiti, with directive that all necessary fines must be paid.

Meanwhile, Fayose clarified that the passion to open up Ado Ekiti , the capital of Ekiti State to business opportunities and make it a befitting city made him to concentrate many of his projects in the town.

Fayose, who said this at the palace of Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe while inspecting the N250 million pavilion being built by the state government , said the project was in honour of Ekiti people and the entire Ado Ekiti indigenes.

“Ado Ekiti is the living room for Ekiti State. Whatever impression the outsiders have about Ado Ekiti would be for the entire Ekiti. There is no politics about this. I only want to do what is right," he said.

“Just like I said earlier, I will pull down the old Oja Oba on November 8. I have told the traders to move to Awedele where there are spaces. I have paid about N200 million compensation. All these are being done to give our capital city a facelift”, he said.

Also speaking at the commissioning of the e-library at the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Fayose , said no stone would be left unturned to realise the vision of revamping the education sector in the State.

“We are ready whatever that will enhance our vision in education sector. We will continue to use our office to draw more of sorts to our tertiary institutions. We cannot afford to have graduates who cannot compete anywhere.

“My belief is that, if we develop these students, we develop ourselves . If we make you, then we make ourselves”, Fayose said.

Fayose also declared that he won’t interfere in the succession battle for the appointment of new Provost for the College, as the tenure of Prof Francisca Aladejana would come to an end soon.

Politics › With Cabinet, Nigeria's Buhari Puts Party Before Reforms -REUTERS by erunz(op): 3:54pm On Oct 16, 2015
ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has chosen a cabinet dominated by political veterans, opting to strengthen his power base rather than surround himself with technocrats who could overhaul Africa's biggest economy.

Buhari won March's election on promises to usher in a new era in the West African nation where a rich elite has controlled key state jobs for half a century. Most Nigerians live in poverty despite the enormous oil wealth of Africa's top producer.

The former military ruler had asked Nigerians to be patient and get ready for "change" as he took four months to pick his cabinet while a plunge in oil prices triggered the worst economic crisis for decades.

But in the end the 72-year-old has selected many familiar faces - those who helped him win the election and some who had hoped for jobs at a national level since he first ran for office in 2003.

Out of 36 nominated ministers, about 20 are veterans from Buhari's party, former state governors, ministers or associates from his military career. A dozen could be classified as 'technocrats'.

"It is a cabinet that seems to have been drawn from different interests that brought Buhari to power," said Clement Nwankwo, director of the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, a think-tank in Abuja.

Buhari will unveil portfolios only after the Senate has approved his list.

But his nominations show a desire to close ranks in his All Progressives Congress (APC), an alliance of powerful Nigerians united by a desire to remove the People's Democratic Party of his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan rather than a shared vision.

While he promised during the election campaign to take on the establishment in order to root out corruption, Buhari's priority was to overcome APC divisions and reward allies such as party spokesman Lai Mohammed with cabinet jobs, analysts say.

To reinforce his power base, Buhari has even taken on the controversial figure of his campaign manager, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, who has been accused of corruption. Amaechi has denied the accusations.

"It was the political trade-offs which definitely cost a lot of time. There was internal wrangling within Buhari's party," said Bismarck Rewane, CEO of Lagos consultancy Financial Derivatives.

As a result, most ministers have had careers that span decades making Kemi Adeosun, a 48-year-old former investment banker and one of the technocrats, his youngest nominee.

Other prominent veterans include Babatunde Fashola, former governor of the commercial capital Lagos, who won praise for getting infrastructure projects off the ground but also criticism for clearing slums.

TECHNOCRATS

Buhari's cohort must stave off a recession next year due to a collapse in oil revenues that has weakened the naira and driven up inflation. The government also needs to win back investors upset by hefty foreign currency restrictions imposed by central bank governor Godwin Emefiele, who filled a vacuum in the absence of a finance minister.

Buhari's selection process was complicated by the fact that he was constitutionally bound to select a minister from each of Nigeria's 36 states to reflect the character of a nation of 170 million people from 250 ethnic groups.

Despite this, he picked some fresh faces from outside the establishment with backgrounds in accounting, law, medicine and finance.

"Those expecting a list formed wholly of technocrats were being unrealistic," said Kayode Akindele, a political consultant and partner at private equity firm TIA capital. "He has a good mixture. You could have key portfolios with technocrats, which would help to drive reforms."

Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, head of state oil firm NNPC and a former ExxonMobil manager, is expected to become junior oil minister as Buhari wants to head the oil ministry himself.

Reform-minded observers are likely to have been cheered by Kachikwu's Senate hearing appearance in which he vowed to take action regarding poorly performing refineries, which force Nigeria to import most of its fuel. [nL8N12E329]

Okechukwu Enyinna Enelamah, a former Goldman Sachs banker who heads Nigeria's biggest private equity firm, African Capital Alliance, is a candidate for the finance minister.

Adeosun, a UK-trained accountant and finance commissioner of southwestern Ogun state, is also a candidate for the finance portfolio. At her hearing, Adesoun sought to assure investors that central bank controls aimed at preventing a collapse of the naira would be accompanied by measures to stimulate growth.

"So what the CBN governor has done just brought in some breathing space ... (but the) exchange rate is not the silver bullet," she said. "It would have to be accompanied with fiscal policies, monetary policies and industrial policies."

But with no sign of any increase in oil prices, the reliance on crude sales for 70 percent of government revenues will make it difficult for Buhari to keep his promise to diversify the economy.

"Public finances are so fragile that there are a relatively limited number of policy options," said Antony Goldman of Nigeria-focused PM Consulting.

Politics › EXPOSED | Abubakar Audu’s N1.8 Billion Lokoja Mansion - PICS by erunz(op): 3:38pm On Oct 16, 2015
The APC Kogi State gubernatorial candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu owns and resides in a gigantic mansion situated at the heart of the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Lokoja, Kogi State, SIGNAL can report.

Investigations backed up with photographic evidences by SIGNAL reveal that the mansion which was built during Audu’s time as Kogi State governor, is estimated to have cost a whooping N1.8 billion.

“When Audu started building that property, the entire state thought it was part of the Government House project which he said he was building. It was such a massive edifice. We never knew it was his private residence. This is actually not the only property he has in Kogi State, although this appears to be the biggest. Audu has several other properties scattered across Abuja, the United States and other parts of the world.

“He has a multi-million dollar mansion in Potomac, Maryland in the US as well. If you look around Lokoja and Kogi State as a whole, you can see poverty all around. But one man whose career was not known before he entered Government House has suddenly acquired so much wealth”, a Kogi State indigene who pleaded anonymity told SIGNAL.

The unraveling of the Abubakar Audu Lokoja mansion is coming a few weeks after Audu’s ruling APC party chairman in Kogi State, Hadi Ametuo appealed to the people of Kogi State to vote in the former governor after which he will return the N11 billion he allegedly embezzled from the state.

Audu is facing prosecution by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly defrauding Kogi State to the tune of N11 billion during his tenure as state governor between 1999 and 2003.

Despite severe allegations of graft, Audu emerged the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and will fly the party’s flag in the forthcoming November 21 gubernatorial polls in Kogi State.

Politics › Jonathan Stopped Us From Contesting Buhari's Election - PDP by erunz(op): 2:12pm On Oct 16, 2015
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has finally expressed its mind on the outcome of the just concluded presidential election, saying, but for the statesmanly approach of former President Goodluck Jonathan, it would have challenged the election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

This is in spite of the pressure from the North-East to complete their tenure as PDP National Chairman following the resignation of Adamu Mu'azu.

The party made its position known at the 67th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja yesterday.

It drew the attention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the crisis the singular action of Jonathan in conceding victory averted, warning that its magnanimity should not be taken for granted.

The party further said that Jonathan's action saved the nation from unrest and possible disintegration.

It also announced its determination to return to power in 2019 by exposing the hypocrisy of the ruling party through checks and constructive criticism.

At a well-attended National Executive committee of the party, the first since 2015 general election, PDP also adopted the Senator Ike Ekweremmadu Post Election Fact Finding Committee Report, which recommended way forward for the party.

According to a statement released by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the recommendations include the sanctity of the zoning principle of the party, biometric membership registration, introduction of direct primaries to guarantee internal democracy as well as reconciliation.

Also speaking, the Chairman of PDP Governors Forum, Olusegun Mimiko said, "Nigerians and political leaders who find it convenient to rubbish the legacies of President Goodluck Jonathan in conceding power to President Muhammadu Buhari must have a rethink as they can only speak because Nigeria exists as a nation today.

"The presidential election was far from being perfect and most PDP members would have gone to court to challenge the election but for the position of the President to concede victory. If you subject that election to forensic and scientific analyses, the details would have exposed the deficiency of the result."

Also speaking, the party's National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, called the attention of Nigerians to the selective implementation of the 'ordinarily commendable' anti-corruption fight.

Politics › More Than 1,320 Nigerians Killed By Boko Haram Under Buhari’s Presidency by erunz(op): 5:08pm On Oct 15, 2015
AFP puts the Boko Haram death toll at more than 1,320 Nigerians alone since Muhammadu Buhari assumed office as Nigeria’s president on the 29th of May.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for three suicide attacks in Kuje and Nyanya, in the capital, Abuja on October 2, which killed 18 people and further injured another 41.

On Tuesday, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, revealed that two people had been arrested in connection of the bombings.

He did not disclose the arrested suspects identities but IGP Arase said in a statement the arrests had “foiled another attack attempt in the FCT (Federal Capital Territory)”.

Items recovered from the suspects included “prepared and primed” home-made explosives concealed in soft drink cans, 28 electronic detonator parts and “large quantities” of bomb-making equipment, he revealed.

Nigeria’s military has claimed successes in recent months and has called the recent Boko Haram attacks on civilian targets as “an act of desperation” on the part of the Islamic State loyalty sworn terror group.

President Buhari had promised to crush the Boko Haram terror group in three (3) months but the Islamist militant group has grown in leaps and bound after initially been pushed to the fringes by the past adminstration in its dying minutes – which have led to Nigerians asking if Buhari really has what it takes to crush Boko Haram besides being an ex-military officer.

According to reports on ground in Borno state, the heartland of the Boko Haram insurgency, the people are getting enraged and dissatisfied as they had been promised during the Presidential election camapign that they would no longer have to live in fear of the Abubakar Shekau led group but the opposite has been the situation.

WHEN WE CRITICIZED LIFTING OF THE BAN, THEY CALLED US WAILING WAILERS, BUT GOD HAS VINDICATE US THE WAILERS, I WAS HAPPY SEEING THIS. ALL WAILERS IN THE HOUSE DON'T RELENT AS WE STRIVE AND WAIL FOR BETTER DEMOCRACY.
Politics › Senate Summons CG Customs, Ali Over Rice Importation by erunz(op): 2:11pm On Oct 15, 2015
The Senate on Thursday, October 15, summoned the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali to brief the committee of the whole on why he lifted the ban on rice through land borders.

This decision was taken after a motion on the dangers posed by the removal of rice from import restriction list and re-introduction of import duty payment on land borders was raised by Muhammed Adamu Aliero representing Kebbi Central.

Aliero said the Senate informed that the ban on rice imports through the land border has reduced cross-border smuggling.

He added that the Senate is concerned that the decision by the Comptroller-General of Customs to liberalize the importation of rice to the extent of lifting the ban on land importation of rice will seriously escalate rice smuggling.

“The Senate is worried that the unilateral and unexpected deciosion of the CG Customs to re-open the country’s land borders to rice importation will reverse the tremendous gains recorded in rice production in the country.

“The Senate also wants to ensure that the agriculture sector is the dependable lifeline of this country is not harmed beyond immediate repair by the policy inconsistency,” he said.
Bukola Saraki, the Senate president who stressed the importance of the motion commended Aliero for bringing it on the floor of the Senate.

“We need to give the CG a chance to explain why the decion was taken and also for the investors to know that a well sought out process before reversal as far as investment is concerned.

“Farming takes a long time as far as agriculture is concered. We must know why. It is clear that importation of rice through this neighbouring countries in most cases is an attempt to try bypass the government. This is because neighboring countries do not eat the same type of rice we eat.”

Meanwhile, most of the lawmakers opposed the motion stating that the motion will make the bourgeois richer.

Although Kabir Marafa representing Zamfara central was one of the lawmakers to oppose the motion, he commended his colleague for bringing the motion.

He also said that the banning will create jobs for the youth but at the same time, its not well intentioned the country.

Dino Melaye representing Kogi West senatorial district also objected the bill.He asked that the CG customs must be summoned.

“We must listen to the Controller General because we have to hear his side of the story to tell the senate why he took the decisions he took,” he said.

James Manager said that rice importation is not good for Nigerians either for air, land or sea.We cannot rush into making decisions like that.

On Wednesday, October 7, the inclusion of rice on the import restriction list has been overturned by the comptroller-general of customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd).

Meanwhile, some bills were presented to the floor of the senate for first reading. Some of the bills are National Planning Process bill, Delegated Legislaton bill, Economic and Financial Crime Commission (establishment, etc) bill 2015, Employment Services Bill 2015, National Liberty Act (ammendment) bll 2015, Employment Services bill 2015.

Others are Local Industry Patronage bill 2015, National Commission for Peace recnconcilliation and meditation bill 2015, environmental managers registration council of Nigeria (establishment, etc) bill 2015, National Political debate commission (establishment, etc)bill 2015, constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 Alteration bil 2015.
