Politics › LAGOS ASSEMBLY: After 7weeks Of Work, Lagos Lawmakers Embark On 6weeks Holiday by erunz(op): 4:52pm On Jul 31, 2015
LEGISREPORTS NG – In a bid to ease traffic congestion around Agege and Iju areas of Lagos State, members of the state House of Assembly have called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to construct a flyover at Pen Cinema, which will connect Oba Ogunji Agunbiade and Iju Road.

This call followed a motion moved by the member representing Agege Constituency 2, Hon. Yinka Ogundimu, and seconded by the member representing Epe Constituency 1, Abiodun Tobun.

While speaking on the motion, Ogundimu explained that the traffic situation around the affected areas had negatively affected productive hours, health and economic activities of residents in the area.

He said: “The absence of a flyover in the area has created a lot of hardships and suffering for motorists, commuters and residents and this has negative socio-economic implications.

“Motorists and commuters who ply Agege Axis and Pen Cinema experience daily chaotic traffic jam leading to incessant accidents, traffic gridlock, loss of lives and productive hours.

“Unless an urgent action is taken by the state government to address the situation, the people would continue to suffer. The Agege-Ifako Model City Plan provided for a flyover at the cross road.”

According to the lawmaker, the bridge will not only reduce the sufferings of motorists and commuters in Agege but help those of Alimosho, Ikeja, Ifako-Ijaiye and Ogun State.

Contributing to the motion, Hon. Bisi Yusuf representing Alimosho Constituency 1, noted that “the fear of congestion in that area is the beginning of wisdom for motorists and commuters in the area.”

Yusuf explained that traffic situation in the area had not only affected the economic activities but also the security situation. “Because of the congestion, most of these hoodlums attack the people and rob them of their property. The construction of a flyover there is long overdue,” he said.

Hon. Tunde Braimoh representing Kosofe Constituency 2 compared the popular junction Pen Cinema with the Ojuelegba junction in Lagos and Mokola junction in Ibadan. He cited the construction of flyovers at these aforementioned junctions as a great relief to the traffic problems being experienced there overtime. He therefore urged the State Government to take cue and embark on the construction.

On his part, Hon. Sola Giwa representing Lagos Island Constituency 1, urged the government to consider the future plan in implementing the resolution. “We tend to only plan for the immediate need which is not good enough, without putting future explosion of population in that area into consideration. We should always consider the future in the development of our infrastructure,” Giwa said.

Hon. Segun Olulade, member representing Epe Constituency 2, who commended the prime mover of the motion, urged the government to also look into future. “We should always think ahead and plan ahead into the future, whatever it will do now should not be a palliative to total remedy putting the future in mind.”

Abiodun Tobun (Epe Constituency 1), who decried the stress and loss of man hours on that axis, said that the construction of that bridge would immortalise the government of Ambode. “If the bridge is constructed, people will be able to reach their destination so fast and so quick, stop the nefarious activities of the men of the underworld,” said Tobun

Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho (Mushin 1) said that there were about 10 housing estates in the area, “so it is very important the government constructed the bridge. The construction would not only enhance the socio-economic activities but also the health and security of commuters and motorists.”

She, however, urged Ambode to embark on the project to honour the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa who is representing the constituency.

Speaker Obasa in his ruling, said, “even if you pass through Pen Cinema, around 10pm and 11pm, there will still be traffic jam. The number of estates growing around Agege surpasses the infrastructure around the area. There is nothing we can do than do construct a fly over in the interests of all the people.

“This House resolves to call on the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode to, as a matter of urgency, direct the appropriate Ministries, Agencies or board of governments to commerce appropriate actions that will enable the government to embark on the construction of Fly Over across Pen Cinema connecting Oba Ogunji Agunbiade and Iju Road as part of the implementation of the Agege-Ifako Model City plan.”

After a voice vote, the Speaker passed the resolution and the Assembly adjourned plenary session to September 7, 2015 in order to embark on its annual recess.

Politics › US State Department Denies Oshiomole’s $6bn Story by erunz(op): 11:25am On Jul 30, 2015
US State Department US State department denies Oshiomhole’s $6B story, asked him to name the US-Official.

New York[RR]Washington-DC–Edo State governor who accompanied Buhari in 4-days State visit to United States has alleged that A minister who served under the former Goodluck Jonathan administration, stole $6billion (more than N1.2 trillion), he told Reporters on Monday.

But quick contact with United States Department in Washington-DC, on the matter said it is false allegation. US State Department denied the story, asked Oshiomhole, to name the official and not drag United States into Nigeria domestic politics, Republic Reporters gathered.

Oshiomhole who failed to disclose the name of the minister said the details were provided last week by United States officials during President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit there. Mr. Oshiomhole, who was part of the delegation, did not give the name of the minister.

“We have moved away from a president that doesn’t seem to know his powers to one that understands that he is a president of the country in the continent,” Mr. Oshiomhole said in response to criticisms of the trip by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

He spoke on Monday at the state house where he and the Kebbi State governor, Atiku Bagudu, as members of the APC governors’ forum, briefed President Buhari on the outcome of a discussion held with APC Senators Sunday.

“PDP destroyed the country- I mean from the lips of American officials; senior officials of the state department. They said one minister under PDP cornered as much as $6billion, and the man said even by Washington standard that is earth-quaking,” he said.

He said the country was being very patient with the PDP; otherwise Nigerians would have been “stoning” anyone carrying the badge of the party.

Mr. Oshiomhole said the PDP government plundered Nigeria, destroyed its institutions, damaged the military, converted the NTA to a party megaphone, destroyed the SSS, went after opposition, and compromised even student unions.

Mr. Oshiomole said under the PDP, there was no law as they were law to themselves. “We are a very patient people. If we were not a patient people, anybody wearing the tag of PDP ought to feel very unsafe because you are all victims- all of us here,” he said.

He quoted American officials as saying that Mr. Jonathan was seen as a confused president who did not know what they issues were, leaving others outside the country “frustrated”.

Recalling a chat with the US Assistant Secretary of State, Johnnie Carson, on the difference between the two administrations, Mr. Oshiomhole said Mr. Carson told him that each time they thought that there was light at the end of the tunnel for Nigeria and it is time to encourage them to build on it, “you we would wake up the following day under president Jonathan to find out that even the tunnel had been removed”.

“Now last week, this same Carson cheered the president’s address at the Institute of Peace. And he said ‘we now have a man of enormous integrity; one that has shown so much faith in the democratic process; one that refused to be frustrated even in the face of massively rigged elections,” he said.

Politics › 29 People Killed, Many Injured In Fresh Borno Attacks - VANGUARD by erunz(op): 10:38am On Jul 28, 2015
BY NDAHI MARAMA, MAIDUGURI
At least 29 people were reportedly killed with many others sustained gunshot wounds when suspected members of dreaded Boko Haram sect attacked Dille community and other surrounding villages of Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno state.

The incident took place at about 1pm on Monday when the terrorists in large number armed with AK47 rifles and petrol bombs stormed Dille, a predominantly christian community that had witnessed series of deadly attacks in recent times.

Precisely on July 14th, 2014, suspected Boko Haram insurgents invaded the same village where they killed 14 residents, after which, they burnt down three churches including Church of Brethren in Nigeria (EYN) which has the highest number of worshippers in the area.

Also last week, another group of insurgents laid siege on Kopa Mai Kadir and Yazza villages of Askira Uba and killed 15 people before sacking the whole communities.

Residents who were lucky to escape from the attacks told our Correspondent that the insurgents invaded Dille with sophisticated weapons in a convoy of 5 Hilux vehicles and motorcycles where they wrecked havoc without confrontation as they shot at anybody on sight.

Mallam Paul Ali Dille, a resident who escaped the attack, said, the death toll would have been higher, but many residents who quickly noticed the invasion had to run out of Dille to nearby bushes for their safety as there were no security presence in the affected communities.

Reacting to the incident, a Member House of Representatives in Hawul and Askira Uba Federal Constituency of Borno state, Hon. Jubrin Satumari who hail from Dille Village said, the rate at which boko haram insurgents were terrorising his communities is worrisome, and therefore called on the new service chiefs, especially the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai to step up action towards protecting lives and property of innocent citizens in the affected communities.

Satumari stated this to Journalists while confirming the killing of 29 people by insurgents in Dille yesterday. He described the recent attacks as callous, barbaric and unjustifiable and however called on security agencies in the State to step up surveillance and the people to remain very vigilant about happenings in their areas and report any suspicious persons or movements to the nearest security point or jurisdiction.

“I am much worried over the spate of killings by suspected insurgents in my constituency. I have pleaded to security authorities, particularly military to deploy troops to most of the affected villages to safeguard my people’s lives and property, but all my cries failed on deaf ears as there are no security presence in my constituency yet, but I still want to assure my people that we are doing everything possible to see that military troops are deployed immediately”. The Lawmaker said.

Satumari who noted that the military authorities and other security outfits would do everything necessary to prevent the unwarranted attacks by Boko Haram from escalating, however, hailed efforts so far by President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that Nigerians were safe and secured in all parts of the country, especially in the North-East geo-political zone where the Military Command and Control Centre is now located.

Satumari said: “It was really a sad day for me to learn that there were renewed attacks in my constituency, some parts of Borno state and the north east in general by the barbaric acts of the insurgents. People are being killed in cold blood, churches, mosques, shops and residential houses were destroyed, it is very unfortunate. I pray God to grant eternal rest for the souls of those killed by insurgents and quick recovery for the injured ones”.

He however said, Boko Haram is not invincible and he have no doubt that the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari possesses the requisite political will and determination to decisively fight the insurgents and restore security to affected areas.

Politics › Aregbesola Lied About Osun Revenue – Ex-hos by erunz(op): 8:21pm On Jul 23, 2015
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola

The immediate past Head of Service in Osun State, Mr. Segun Akinwusi, has said the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola earned N317 billion from the federal allocation, internally generated revenue and other accruals from the Federal Government since he became the governor in 2010.

The figure given by Akinwusi at the summit organised by the Osun Stakeholders at Ile Ife on Thursday was contrary to the N204 billion which the governor gave as the total accrual to the state at the inauguration of the state House of Assembly on June 2.

The figure given by the former HOS also formed part of the communique issued by the organisers of the summit at the end of the programme.

One of the conveners of the summit, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, read the communique.

The summit was scheduled to hold at a hotel in Osogbo but one of the conveners, Mr. Niyi Owolade, accused the police of being used by the state government to deny them the opportunity of using the venue.

Efforts to speak to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, proved abortive as the signal was bad when our corespondent called her on the telephone. She, however, did not respond to the text message sent to her.

Akinwusi, in his speech, put the state’s debt profile at over N400 billion and not N40 billion, saying the future of generations yet unborn in the state was bleak because of the burden of the debt.

He added that the governor lied to the people of the state by telling them that the N11.5 billion Islamic loan (Sukuk) raised attracted no interest. According to him, the state will pay 25.5billion to service the loan of N11.5 billion.

The summit also tasked the National Assembly to set in motion machinery to restructure the country, saying states did not need the handout given to them in the name of bailout but they should be allowed to prospect for resources within their territories.

They frowned out the use of consultants by Osun State Government to carry out the task which civil servants ought to be doing.

They said this was a huge waste of state’s resources and should be stopped to save the state of some fund.

They stressed that some white elephant projects embarked upon by the state government were designed to fleece the state, while they lamented the state of many of these projects, including the Ido Osun Airport.

Owolade, who is a former governorship candidate of the Accord Party, said Aregbesola said when he paid President Muhammadu Buhari a visit that the problem confronting the state was beyond his power.

Based on this, he said, the group came up with the intention of holding the summit so that participants would fashion out ways out of the financial crisis for the state and other states in similar conditions.

The governor had told members of the House of Assembly on June 2, during the inauguration of the new lawmakers, that the state earned N 204 billion from November 2010 to the end of 2014.

He explained that the sharp drop in the amount of fund accruing to the state made it difficult for him to continue to pay workers regularly.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress in the state had said the organisers of the summit fled the venue initially scheduled for the meeting on sighting policemen because their intentions were not good.

The spokesperson of the APC in the state, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said this in a statement made available to react to the claim of the summit’s conveners.

He said, “Their claim that the police stopped them from holding it in Osogbo is ridiculous. They came to Leisure Spring Hotel, saw police security and they fled‎ to one hideout in Ile Ife.

“If their intentions were good, why did they run away from the police? If their intention were good, why did the presence of the police scare them? Did the police officially prohibit the summit? Those guys are cowards, they should not be taken seriously.

“‎We will look at what they had on offer as solution to the financial and education problems in the state before we respond fully.”

Politics › Despite Fg’s Claim, Radio Biafra Still On Air by erunz(op): 8:05am On Jul 15, 2015
Though the federal government claimed to have sent Radio Biafra off the airwaves, checks by TheCable revealed that the controversial station is still broadcasting. Yemi Folasade-Esan, permanent secretary in the ministry of information, had earlier said that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) had jammed signals of the station. “Signals from Radio Biafra have been jammed. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has successfully jammed that,” she had said, adding that “the commission is also working with security operatives to get those that are behind the illegal radio.” But dismissing her claim, the station said the federal government cannot silence it. “NBC lied to their master. Radio Biafra is live in BiafraLand. They cannot even ban our local station, do they even know we also transmit via satellite and online as well,” the station wrote on Twitter. TheCable discovered this when it tuned to the radio station late Tuesday. The content of the station, which came into existence some months ago, is known to be divisive.
