Politics › Reps Leadership Crisis Deepens As Dogara, Gbajabiamila Groups Still Disagree by erunz(op): 1:36am On Jul 09, 2015

• Pro-Speaker lawmakers accuse Odigie-Oyegun of acting unilaterally
• No going back on party position, say pro-Gbajabiamila supporters

WHATEVER hopes there may have been that the crisis over who occupies some principal positions in the House of Representatives would soon be over have evaporated.

Rather, it has deepened as the group backing the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara again, yesterday, rejected the directive of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the sharing of the principal positions in the lower legislative chamber.

The APC had, at its National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, stressed that it is incumbent on all members to respect party supremacy on issues bothering on power sharing and governance.

Specifically, the APC leadership had in a correspondence to the Speaker, proposed Femi Gbajabiamila (South West) as House Leader, Ado Doguwa (North West) -Deputy House Leader, Pally Iriase (South South) – Chief Whip and Mohammed Tahir Mungonu (North East) as Deputy Chief Whip respectively.

But rising from a meeting it held with the Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal-led reconciliation committee, spokesman for the pro-Dogara group, Dr. Abdulmumini Jibrin yesterday insisted that the letter purportedly transmitted to the House by the APC Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun prescribing the distribution of principal offices of the chamber was not acceptable to them.

He said the letter did not pass through the relevant legal organs of the party.

Jubrin, who represents Bebeji/Kiru federal constituency of Kano State, said his group was ready to concede only the position of House Leader to the Femi Gbajabiamila-led group, adding that other zones except the South West and North East should be allowed to produce the Majority Leader in the interest of equity and entrenchment of the federal character principle.

“We have made far reaching concessions and this is to allow peace to reign in the House. It was very tough but of course the wise counsel of the governor of Sokoto, his advice and very firm position about need for compromise if peace must return, convinced us.
“Three things we agreed. One, we maintained our position that we do not recognise the letter written by the party and I give you reasons. We have utmost respect for the chairman but that letter did not pass through all the party’s relevant legal organs.

“It was neither approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) nor the National Executive Committee (NEC), nor was the party caucus consulted. It was a product of one or two governors and of course the national chairman.

“Let me maintain the fact that we respect the national chairman, but we will only respect the letter that is processed through the relevant legal organs of the party. So, our position is that we do not recognise even the existence of the letter. Secondly, our position at the meeting is that the principal officers of the House must be in tandem with the principle of equity and federal character as prescribed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

‘‘The six positions that are usually occupied by the majority party: The Speaker, Deputy Speaker, House Leader and Deputy House Leader, Whip and Deputy Whip must go to the six geopolitical zones, to reflect the principle of equity and federal character.

To that end, we agreed to concede the position of House Leader to the Gbajabiamila group, a decision we took bearing in mind that we need peace, we need unity in the House, and bearing in mind that Nigerians are watching and we want to get down to work.

“The year has gone half way already and we need to get down to work.

But in the event that they do not accept, we also provided our last point which is our last position that the only alternative that will be left is for us to be allowed to choose the principal officers of the House in line with the standing rules. So, we have to come back and hold an election of the entire APC members of the House to elect a House Leader. That is our position. We have to make this interim statement in order not to allow false information get to the public.

“As it is now you all know it is not news that some zones have already gone to court. The North Central is already in court, the South East is already in court because they are insisting that you cannot deny them having a principal officer in the House. So, these are some of the issues that we have discussed and we did this in a very patriotic way. We placed national interest at the back of our minds and we hope that this will be able to lead the crisis to its end.”

But in their reaction, the APC loyalists maintained that the party’s position on the sharing of principal office positions must be sustained.

A statement issued by Alhaji Rufai Chachangi on behalf of the group noted: “We the 174 APC loyalists group of the House are aware that there was a private discussion between Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Buhari on Tuesday evening at the State House. We are also aware that Tambuwal briefed the press that there would be a meeting between him and Speaker Dogara’s group same day.

“To the best of our knowledge, no counter-offer has been made to the APC loyalists group after her first meeting with Tambuwal peace committee wherein the APC loyalists clearly stated that in line with party supremacy resolution reached at last APC NEC meeting, the position of the party on Gbajabiamila as the House Leader is non-negotiable.

“We understand that the Dogara group is now playing the zoning card after same group had hitherto before the speakership election of June 9, 2015 rejected the zoning formula of the party prior to the mock election. Interestingly the six geopolitical zones in the country are not recognised by the constitution. But if they wish to play the zoning card then the Senate and House cannot both be headed by members from the North.

“For avoidance of doubt, the issue of South East being denied a principal officer’s seat in the House is hogwash. We have respect for people of South East but we cannot hold brief for a zone that produced only two ‘new’ APC members. They are not qualified to be principal officers of the House. For emphasis and clarity the provision of standing rules of the House, Order 7 Rule 37 states that “only members with cognate legislative experience as members of the national assembly shall be eligible for appointment as principal officers.”

“We are also surprised that a group led by Speaker Dogara who is a lawyer is talking about a court action presumably instigated by him based on federal character, when a fresh law school graduate knows that the issue of federal character as enshrined in S.14 of the constitution is non justifiable and of no legal consequence.

“However, as a group that wants peace and quick solution to the logjam in the House, the APC loyalists group would equally subscribe to an election among entire members of the APC House Caucus where all members irrespective of zones would exercise their right to elect their principal officers.”

Politics › National Assembly Rumpus, Revolution Is Looming... PDP Media Watchdog Tells APC, by erunz(op): 4:16pm On Jul 07, 2015
The PDP Media Watchdog has reacted angrily to the brouhaha in the National Assembly especially the efforts by the leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to destabilize the country in trying to force the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu to resign his position because he was elected from a minority party.

The group condemned the move in a statement made available to the media on Tuesday 7th of July 2015 and called on all Nigerians, lovers and supporters of democracy to stand up and defend the country before it's too late.

"Nigerians will recall that before the 2015 general elections and during the campaigns, the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) had threatened to form a parallel government if the party does not win the election at the center. Nigerians will also recall that the APC and its leaders has never conceded defeat in the spirit of sportsmanship on any elections and it's on this note that we want to tell President Muhammadu Buhari and those behind the hullabaloo in the National Assembly to call them to order in the interest of peace" the group said.

The Watchdog reminded the APC and its leaders that the party does not have the monopoly of violence and promised the party that if the situation in the National Assembly and other public disturbances orchestrated by supporters of the APC is not handled properly, that the group will mobilize Nigerians to defend the country from those who do not mean well for the people.

"We are not against anyone writing petition to the police complaining of forgery of the standing rule in the National Assembly, if any, but what we are against is the plan by the APC and its leaders to humiliate the Deputy Senate President on the ground that he is of the PDP and so not qualified to be elected to that position even when he had the support of senators from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC)" the group complained.

The group further reminded Nigerians that before the 2015 Presidential election, the Presidential Candidate of the APC who is todayelected the President and Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in an attempt to clarify himself of the affidavit he presented to INEC instead of his certificate presented a forged certificate that embarrassed him and the country.

Finally, the group warned that further attempt to remove Sen. Ike Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate President will be resisted vehemently and those who are pushing for his removal should think of its outcome.

Politics › Hold PDP Responsible For Any Breach Of Peace In Osun, APC Tells Police by erunz(op): 3:41pm On Jul 07, 2015
As the call for the impeachment of Governor Rauf Aregbesola increases in Osun, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has called on security agencies to hold the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore and his party responsible for any breach of peace in the state.

In a statement by the Directorate of Publicity, Research and Strategy, yesterday, the party said it was aware of plans by a group of profiteers who were being sponsored by Omisore and his party to unleash violence on the state, using the issue of workers’ salaries as camouflage.

“Specifically we must alert the whole world to a threat issued by Omisore on June 14 this year at the secretariat of the PDP in Osogbo where he promised members of his party that he was prepared to make this state ungovernable for Governor Rauf Aregesola.

“We are therefore certain that the crisis being orchestrated in the state is to get what the people of Osun denied him through a democratic process on August 9, 2014. This was his resolution after the Supreme Court decision which finally sealed his ambition through a pronouncement on May 27, this year.

“We are using this medium to inform the public and the media to be wary of activities of this set of opportunists who are the real profiteers behind the undeserved focus on Osun among the more than 20 states that are currently facing salary challenges.

“The APC government under Aregbesola in Osun has been having very fruitful negotiations with the labour and we can therefore say without any contradiction that the labour has no hand in this proposed protest.’’

Responding to the allegation, the PDP lamented that the APC-led government would be looking for who to blame for its failure at this stage.

“It is unfortunate that the sinking government still be engaging in buck passing when he should be busy looking for money to settle unpaid salaries and allowances of workers,” a statement by the PDP spokesperson in Osun state, Prince Diran Odeyemi said.

“In the last one week, we have not issued any statement because we observe workers are rising to the occasion to fight for their rights.

“We are not involved as a party, Omisore is not involved and will never be party to any act of lawlessness but we demand from the governor to explain if he has paid these workers.

“Have they been paid their salaries? If no, whatever the steps they take inasmuch as such is within the ambit of the law, nothing can stop workers from demanding for their rights,” he said.

Politics › BREAKING: Chaos In Osogbo As Thugs Disrupt Protest Against Aregbesola by erunz(op): 1:11pm On Jul 07, 2015
Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, erupted into pandemonium on Tuesday morning as persons suspected to be thugs disrupted a protest organised by a group of Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun, CSCEO, to rally support for the serving judge of the State High Court, Justice Folahanmi Oloyede.

The judge had petitioned the state House of Assembly to investigate Governor Rauf Aregbesola over alleged mismanagement of the state resources.

It was gathered that skirmishes between the protesters and some hoodlums began immediately after the rally commenced at about 9am.

Beginning at Ayetoro junction, the demonstration had earlier witnessed a hitch when some people pelted the protesters with sachet water but the situation was later brought under control.

The protesters, led by leaders of the coalition were joined by members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, in the march which was to terminate at the gate of the state House of Assembly.

Politics › Jos Bomb Blasts: Angry Protesters Burn Churches — Police by erunz(op): 8:12am On Jul 07, 2015
The commissioner of police in Plateau state, Nasiru Oki, has said two churches were on Monday set ablaze by angry persons protesting bomb explosion at a mosque Sunday night in Jos.

The commissioner of police made the disclosure Monday evening at the police headquarters in Jos.

While briefing journalists on the police’s investigations, he said no arrest had been made so far.

He noted that no life was lost in the church incidents but property allegedly worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Mr. Oki also said that 42 people were killed in the twin bomb explosions on Sunday. He said 20 people died in the first explosion at a restaurant while 22 others died in the second at a mosque.

He said 50 people were hospitalized for various degree of injuries and are being treated in hospitals within Jos.

He also presented an undetonated locally-made device recovered from the first scene. He said according to police bomb experts, the device was capable of destroying a complex.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, had said 44 people were killed in the twin bomb attacks, while the Plateau state government said only 18 people lost their lives.

Meanwhile, military check points have been restored in most parts of the state. All the disbanded military check points in Riyom, Barkinladi, Bauchi roads and those within Jos metropolis were remounted by members of the Special Taskforce on Jos crisis.

The police commissioner declined comment on the reappearance of military check points. He, however, urged residents to endure the development.

The state governor had appealed to President Muhamadu Buhari to allow the restoration of checkpoints.

Politics › Stop Attacking Ekweremadu, Be Grateful To PDP – Timi Frank Tells APC by erunz(op):
Timi FrankThe Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank, on Monday said the party should remain grateful to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for not taking the position of Senate President.

Frank, who was on African Independent Television (AIT) live current affairs programme, FOCUS NIGERIA, where he spoke on the crisis rocking the APC over National Assembly presiding and principal offices, said the APC senators, who were absent during the inaugural session, should be blamed for the outcome.

Below is his speech as monitored by DAILY POST-

APC SHOULD BE GRATEFUL TO THE PDP FOR SENATE PRESIDNCY

“They (PDP) could have nominated themselves to be Senate President and Deputy Senate President; and you cannot take that from them.

We should thank PDP for what they did, for being democratic. They know they are not the ruling party, so they respected themselves by making sure an APC Senate President emerged. They unanimously gave their support to Saraki as we only had about seven or eight APC Senators in the Senate as at that time.

I see no reason anybody should blame Saraki for what has happened. We should be happy that he was there to at least save the situation at that time. If he wasn’t there, the situation could have been different.

WHAT AND WHO TOOK 51 SENATORS TO THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE

The question we should be asking is: Who asked 51 Senators to go to the International Conference Centre? What did they go there to do? I don’t know who called for that meeting, as a party man. We should not blame Saraki for becoming Senate President. We should put the blame on the party and whosoever that called that meeting. Has the President come out to tell Nigerians that I called for a meeting and Senator Saraki wasn’t there? Even the President wasn’t at the International Conference Centre. Why did you expect Saraki to be there?

Everybody is saying the President called (for a meeting), the President called; okay, who gave the directive for the meeting. So, this is the big question, a very critical question we should be asking.

For God’s sake, what must have dragged 51 Senators to the International Conference Centre? They should be asking themselves what took them there. As far as I am concerned, this is the way God has designed it. So, we shouldn’t question God.

NO DEAL BETWEEN SARAKI AND PDP

To my best of knowledge, this is a contest between two political leaders in the same party. Both of them were banking on the support of PDP Senators because APC Senators alone could not have made them Senate President. What happened was a victory for democracy, a victory for the people. You can’t take it away. The Senate or House (of Representatives) is an independent House. These people decide on what they want. They go for what they are comfortable with.

ON EKWEREMADU’S EMERGENCE

On the issue of how Ekweremadu emerged as the Deputy Senate President, for God’s sake, PDP felt that, well, we have been able to give them the Senate Presidency unanimously. We are not trying to be greedy. We are trying to respect democracy.

One of the APC Senators that was present contested alongside Ekweremadu and lost. Not that they just asked Ekweremadu to be the Deputy Senate President. No! It was live on TV. PDP was more in number, so, they voted for their own. At the end of the day, Ekweremadu emerged as the Deputy President of the Senate.

UPSET WITH MY PARTY

Am upset. My party caused the downfall, why we lost the Deputy Senate Presidency. How I wish all the Senators were there, there is no way we wouldn’t have got the Deputy Senate Presidency.

DON’T BLAME EKWEREMADU

We don’t need to be blaming Ekweremadu and so forth. If it were anybody from my party or even myself, I would take advantage of the situation that was on ground.

Today, the man is Deputy Senate President to Saraki. But he is just a Deputy Senate President. What can he do to frustrate my party. There is nothing he can do because we have an active Senate President.

God has done his part. We can’t question God. So, my party should live with it. They can also come up with whatever strategy they feel like. But, Ekweremadu didn’t just put himself there. My party caused it. So, we should accept the defeat.

IMPOSITION AND BIAS FOR ONE CANDIDATE AGAINST THE OTHER

I think we should not have gotten involved in the whole drama in the first place. Saraki is a member of the APC. Senator Lawan is a member of the APC. Everyone involved is a member of the APC. No one is more loyal to the party than the other. But as a party, we have not done well. We treated Dogara and Saraki as if they were half-casts of the party.

PRINCIPAL OFFICERS

This whole internal crises, the party leadership caused it. In the process of trying to take sides, we misfired. The party zoned the Senate Leader to the North East. Fine! But the party should have left it at that, not saying a particular person has to be this. As soon as the party zoned the office, the party should have left it for the zone to come up with the candidate. Like Ahmed Lawan, if the party had not gone ahead to stick out his name, maybe they would have gone ahead to say, Senator Ahmed lost the Senate Presindent, let us leave this for him. But again, the party provoked the people of that zone by writing names.

What Nigerians are trying to say is this: the issue of godfatherism is gone. The issue of saying this must happen is gone. The independence of the House and Senate is what we need. There is no way Saraki could have read the party’s letter. The majority voice in that zone had already written to say this is whom we want. The party must accept failure at this point in time and build from the mistakes we have made.

PARTY SUPREMACY

I agree that party supremacy has come to stay. But again, since party supremacy is now the issue of the day, I expect the national leadership to write the list of ministers and their portfolios and give to the President to announce. The State party chairmen must write the names of the Commissioners and SAs and give to the State Governors to announce. That way, we will know that party supremacy has come to stay. Not just to enforce it on Senate and House of Reps. Otherwise they should allow the Senate to be. They should also allow the House to be”.

Politics › Is Buhari Already Confused?- Etcetera by erunz(op): 1:03pm On Jun 27, 2015
Controversial singer, Etcetera is back with another epistle. Read what he wrote below. If there is any group of individuals who can manufacture shock, political punditry out of nothing, it is the All Progressives Congress. They cried out that Jonathan was doing a terrible job as President of Nigeria. They said his inability to run the Federal Government is the reason our country has lapsed into wholesale chaos. He is the reason corruption decimated our population, turned brother against brother

He is the reason our military became weak and our borders constantly breached by Niger, Chad and Cameroonian gendarmes. He is the reason our cities have all lost power and we have reclined back into the dark ages. He is the reason why thousands of wild dogs/Boko Haram roam our streets and rip our children apart. With democracy being an institution where we worry about how many people ‘agree’ about certain things, APC must be concerned that Nigerians are actually seeing that Buhari is not the messiah we need. When I wrote that Nigerians shouldn’t celebrate Buhari yet, a lot of his sympathisers reached for my scalp with all types of derogatory vocabularies. Now, just a couple of days into his regime and even before the flag is hoisted up the pole, the same people have started singing the same old song that he is too slow. Just like in the time of Jonathan. Why am I not surprised? When I talked about Buhari’s age, they said presiding over the affairs of a country is different from being a bricklayer. Why is Buhari now wishing he was younger? What has ‘changed‘ him? Didn’t he know his age before ‘borrowing’ money to acquire the form to contest for president.

Listening to APC and President Buhari’s excuses of just being in government for only few weeks is like watching a doctor on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ pounding on a patient’s chest until another doctor has to pull him off and say, ‘Sir it’s over!’ That’s what I want to say to President Buhari. Sir, it’s over! We are tired of having president with excuses. You didn’t give us these excuses in any of your campaign speeches. Nigerians, it’s time to move on! There will be other disasters. There will always be presidents with excuses.

The president will cut down the cost of governance. He won’t have as many ministers and advisers like Jonathan. How is approving the appointments of two media aides with the same job description cutting down the cost of governance? What is the difference between a Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) and a Special Adviser (Media and Publicity)? The issue of applying the rule of law in certain matters of state that demands immediate and urgent attention is not why we voted for Buhari. For Christ’s sake, the country is in dire straits.

We are in desperate times as a country and as such, the streets won’t accept these excuses. President Buhari shouldn’t be telling Nigerians that he met an empty treasury. We want to hear of measures his government is taking to recover the stolen funds. This government seems overwhelmed and confused already like what we’ve had in the past. He should also understand that not having his cabinet in place at this point in time is dangerous. President Buhari should know that he can’t govern this country alone. It will take all hands on deck to get this country back on track.

He cannot be the president and the minister of defence and petroleum all by himself. He can’t be at different places at the same time. Being the president of a huge country like Nigeria is different from being the managing director of a business. One does not “run” the Federal Government. You can run a train and you can run your own small business, but the Federal Government of Nigeria is bigger than the largest enterprises of this world. Equating any portion of the Federal Government to a business stretches the meaning of metaphor.

No business is attacked by other countries or has to deliberately kill people, or has a board of 469 National Assembly members, majority of which are trying to bankrupt the company in order to make the CEO look bad, nor does any company operate within transparency of allowing thousands of journalists to pore over their affairs, or carry your opponent’s opinions as if they were facts, or react to hundreds of lawsuits per day from its own employees, or thousands of lawsuits per day from third parties.

No private company is responsible for accomplishing its mission within tens of thousands of laws that deliberately operate against its efficiency. No private company has a board that authorises spending via commitment of financial resources and then separately approves their payment or its equivalent debt.

No business operates from the need to pass legislation in order to change direction, or to accomplish its primary objectives, (environmental safety, energy independence, internet security, university research, election compliance, full employment policies, taxation reform, anti-terrorism, healthcare reform, and intelligence gathering).

No organisation has the responsibility to send soldiers to defend its allies or be responsive to the impact that changed laws, policies, and tax provisions have upon other nations, friend and foe alike. And finally, no organisation is responsible for administration and enforcement of tens of thousands of laws, rules, and regulations against millions of separate entities.

Is President Buhari capable of providing direction, implementing a NASS approved budget, prioritising and recommending budget changes, negotiating legislation, submitting qualified candidates for the courts, appointing and supervising staff and cabinet members, including the joint chiefs of the military, and effectively communicating volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous issues to the Nigerian public? Absolutely, NO!…

Politics › Breaking: House Of Reps In Chaos, As Saraki Names Senate Leadership - AIT by erunz(op): 12:38pm On Jun 25, 2015
The House of Representatives Thursday was thrown into pandemonium as some rancorous members disrupted proceedings, threw caution to the wind and engaged themselves over the election of House principal officers.

The House was divided into two factions, one supporting the cause of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which insists that it chooses the House principal officers, and another, backing the the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, who insists on defying the party.

The House and the Senate have been rocked by crisis over the election of their principal officers.

Thursday’s crisis began as the speaker arrived at the House to commence plenary.

Sports › Chelsea ‘readying £35.5million-plus-mohamed Salah Bid For Antoine Griezmann. by erunz(op): 5:22pm On Jun 24, 2015
Chelsea are reportedly preparing to get their transfer window back on track by launching a £46.2million all-in bid for Atletico Madrid winger Antoine Griezmann.

The Blues’ summer business has been underwhelming so far, with the out-of-sorts Radamel Falcao brought in to replace Didier Drogba, while Petr Cech is set to join to rivals Arsenal.

But according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea are looking to make Griezmann their marquee signing of the summer, and want to add Mohamed Salah to their previous bid of £35.5m to clinch a deal worth around £46.2m in total.

Mourinho is claimed to be extremely serious about bringing Griezmann to Stamford Bridge, while Salah will hold talks with Fiorentina over his future.

Politics › Buhari Sets Committee Headed By Osinbajo To Immediately Share Excess Crude Acct by erunz(op): 5:15pm On Jun 23, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja assured State Governors that the days of impunity, lack of accountability, and fiscal recklessness in the management of national resources are over in Nigeria.

Speaking at a meeting with the Governors in the Presidential Villa, President Buhari also vowed that funds stolen by government officials who abused their offices in the recent past will be recovered and systemic leakages stopped.

“There are financial and administrative instructions in every government parastatal and agency. But all these were thrown to the dogs in the past. Honestly, our problems are great, but we will do our best to surmount them.

“The next three months may be hard, but billions of dollars can be recovered, and we will do our best, ” the President told the governors.

Expressing surprise that the governors had tolerated the atrocities allegedly committed with the Excess Crude Account since 2011, President Buhari promised to tackle the issue decisively.

The President declared that the payment of national revenue into any account other than the Federation Account was an abuse of the constitution, adding that what he had heard was going on in many agencies and corporations, particularly the NNPC, was clearly illegal.

On the refund of monies spent on federal projects by state governments, President Buhari assured the governors that the Federal Government will pay, but insisted that due process must be followed.

The President promised special assistance for the three North Eastern states badly affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.

He also said that a comprehensive statement on the economic and financial situation inherited by his administration will be made to the nation within the next four weeks.

“We will try and put the system back into the right position. What happened in the 2nd Republic has apparently happened again, and even worse, but we will restore sanity to the system,” President Buhari assured the Governors.

On an immediate lifeline for states that owe salaries running into many months, President Buhari said that a committee headed by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, will look at the Excess Crude Account and see what can be shared immediately.

The governors, led by Chairman of the Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, had presented a wish list to the President that included:

Ø Obedience of extant Supreme Court ruling that all monies go into the Consolidated Federation Account;

Ø An order from the President that all revenue generating agencies must pay into the Consolidated Federation Account;

Ø Review of the Revenue Allocation Formula;

Ø Refund of the monies expended by states on federal projects;

Ø A special consideration for the three states of the North East under Boko Haram infestation;

Ø Full details of the amounts that accrued into the Excess Crude Account from 2011, and how the money miraculously shrank without official sharing.

Politics › Govs Ask Buhari To Share $1.6bn From NLNG Tax by erunz(op): 3:49pm On Jun 23, 2015
Governors of the 36 states have advised President Muhammadu Buhari to share the tax of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to resolve the financial crisis facing them.

Over 20 states are currently unable to pay salaries as a result of a sharp fall in oil revenue.

“Instead of NLNG paying $1.6 billion to the federal government, we requested that it be paid to the federation account so that it could be shared amongst the three tiers of government, so that we can also get money to do one or two things,” Abdulazeez Yari, governor of Zamfara state and chairman of the Nigerian governors forum, said at the end of a meeting with Buhari on Tuesday.

“We proposed to Mr. President that instead of being given bail out, ‎that the funds for jobs, projects that were done by the states should be refunded by the federal government. If the affected states can get the refund, they can start paying salaries without bail out.

“Secondly, we also brought to his notice that most of the loans owed by the state, some between four and seven years, if it can be stretched to 20 years, the states will be relieved and would be able to continue other businesses including paying salaries.

“Also, we urged the president to follow the constitution when it comes to money sharing. Section 80 is very clear. That all monies should go to the Consolidated Revenue Account ‎for the purpose, no account should be kept anywhere because this is what the constitution says.

“And Section‎ 162 also is self-explanatory, that whatever is going to happen to the money will be after sharing to the three tiers of government. That the NNPC or any other revenue generating agency should not have the first line charges.”

Apart from the governors of Bayelsa and Plateau states, who were represented at the meeting, the other 34 governors attended.

Politics › Buhari Okays Return Of Military Checkpoints To ‘frontline’ States by erunz(op): 3:37pm On Jun 23, 2015
A day after ordering the dismantling of military checkpoints nationwide, President Muhammadu Buhari has relaxed the rule. Abdulazeez Yari, governor of Zamfara state and chairman of the governors’ forum, said on Tuesday that the governors told Buhari the order was “untimely” because of the security challenges facing the states. “But Mr. President cited some incidents that happened at the military checkpoints but where necessary, he has given the chief of army staff the permission that they can continue especially in the north, south-east and the frontline states,” he said. The frontline states are where the counter-terrorism operations are currently taking place in the north-east. “We discussed the issue of frontline states as regards insurgency: Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The president briefed us on his meeting with the G7 countries who have agreed to support the Nigerian government to fight the insurgency to the last. “Also, it was noted that the insurgency has done so much damage to our infrastructure – schools, hospitals, and bridges. The president said he has put a committee in place to go and assess the situation and he has also made a commitment that he will not request money from any G7 country but support to rebuild the destroyed infrastructure,” Yari said

Politics › Women Throng Bank Over APC N5000 Social Security Pledge by erunz(op): 3:26pm On Jun 23, 2015
A large number of women yesterday besieged a bank in Funtua, Katsina State, for the payment of N5,000 social security for the poor and unemployed Nigerians which the All Progressives Party (APC) had during its campaigns promised to provide if voted into power.

The women, who started trooping to the bank’s premises as early as 7:00am, alleged that they heard an announcement over the radio that the federal government had concluded plans to pay the money. One of the women said she was told that processes of the payment had commenced in the bank.
One of the women who simply gave her name as Sa’adiyya, said: “A friend of mine informed me about the development last week. She said I should come here with my national identity card. She said when I come I will be given a form to fill.”
When contacted, branch manager of the bank, who sought anonymity, said he was not aware of such payment. He added that the bank was not carrying out any registration exercise aside the Bank Verification Number (BVN) as mandated by CBN.
“We are not holding any registration regarding the N5,000 social security as they claimed and I think they mistook the BVN forms we are distributing to our customers as forms for the money. There is no basis for their claims; the women are only working on rumours,” the branch manager said.
Daily Trust saw the bank officials and policemen trying to persuade the teaming women to leave the bank premises and stop obstructing banking activities.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had in the last two weeks at the 10th year anniversary lecture of Crescent University Abeokuta hinted that there were ongoing plans to implement one of their campaign promises of paying N5,000 each to the poorest Nigerians across the country.

Politics › Jonathan Did Not Withdraw My Security - Jega by erunz(op): 8:04am On Jun 21, 2015
By ANOZIE EGOLE

The outgoing chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, has said that the commission’s staff were not adequately compensated for their diligent performance in the just concluded general elections. Prof Jega said this in Lagos at an event tagged, “Afternoon Tea with Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega” organised by EbonylifeTV.

The chairman who praised the staff for their commitment and dedication to duty during the election period said he is very privileged to be called to serve the country though he did that under strict circumstances.

Jega said, “ I am so thankful to the organisers of this event for this platform. I am very privileged to be called to serve the nation and I did that under strict circumstances. The challenges to keep doing good and living up to the expectations of Nigerians gave me sleepless nights. I believed that INEC should contribute to the reform process that has started. We have to do our best for the country. I am urging the young me to be very optimistic to survive. They should try to engage themselves in positive development. I am also advising them to do the best they can no matter the circumstances”

“I will also like to commend INEC staff; they worked as a team; during the period of the election everybody was very accountable for his\her responsibility. We had a a lot of meeting during that election period and that actually helped us. But I do not think that the staff were enough for what they did during the election period. Many people have complained about Zero pulling units. They were those units who because of one technical fault or the other their details were wiped off from the system and as result, they were asked to re-register, we do not intend to disqualify them. We had serious challenge in the production of the PVCs because we do not have companies who can produce that. So we had to partner with some foreign companies. Electricity was also one of the major challenges we had during the election. Adequate time was not also for the registration and educating the staff.”

According to Jega, as against the rumour that his security aides were withdrawn, he said, “All those stories were mere rumour, non of my security aides was withdrawn and nobody asked me to go on leave. It is inconsiderable for anybody to think of going on leave at that point in time when there was a lot of work to do. We were very prepared for everything during the election. The PU results are already online now for more transparency and it will also help the tribunals to do their job well when the need comes.

“We have done a lot to reform and strengthen INEC. Coming to the Local Government elections, I think adequate funds should be given to them to enable them run their affairs even in conducting their elections. Their autonomy should be strengthened.

“I also want to use this opportunity to tell Nigerians that the report for the 2015 elections is in the making and should be out by next week. We have the draft already just to validate that.”.

Politics › Buhari Didn't Order The Sale Of Any Presidential Jet- Garba Shehu by erunz(op): 9:30pm On Jun 19, 2015
Contrary to reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered the immediate disposal of nine of the 11 VIP transport aircraft in the presidential fleet, the presidency on Friday denied knowledge of any such directive.

THISDAY newspaper had quoted unnamed sources as saying the president had directed the selling of serviceable and unserviceable aircrafts to cut maintenance costs in line with the government’s policy to drastically reduce its annual expenditure.

Eight of the planes in the fleet, including Boeing 737, two Gulfstream 550 jets, Gulfstream V jet, two Falcon 7X planes, the Hawker Siddeley aircraft and Augusta Westland chopper, the report said, are reserved strictly for the president’s movement.

Other aircrafts, including two Falcon 900 planes, the Dornier, the Cessna Citation, the Beechracft King Air, and two AugustaWestland choppers, are reserved for the airlifting of the Vice-President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as visiting African heads of states.

But speaking to PREMIUM TIMES Friday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, denied knowledge of such directive.

“The story of the order for the sale of aircrafts in the Presidential Fleet, about which so much interest is being expressed, is not known to us,” Mr. Shehu said.

Mr. Shehu said if anything like that was being contemplated, the Presidency would issue a statement through its official channels to announce it.
