“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty” - John F. Kennedy. Our problem is the lack of confidence on the government we set over ourselves while thinking we are being critical of government. Our problem in Boko haram is not about the competence of Jonathan but our disunity of purpose. We must oppose any foe to assure the survival and success of liberty. When the military was comfortably on top of the situation in 2012/13, Mr. Buhari and other Northern elders were accusing him of partiality against the North and recommended that GEJ should stop military offensive against the terrorists in favor of amnesty. Letters were written to ICC, people were lobbied to stop the move to designate Boko haram a terrorist group and the opposition accused the federal government of human right abuses…the war would have been won long ago. Admiral Nyako termed it Ethnic cleansing. Buhari called it an attack against the North. Jonathan acceded to the demands of this section of the country for unity but in the process the terrorists found time to regroup and become more formidable. Now, the same people who asked GEJ to soft pedal has now turned the atrocities of the terrorists to a campaign point, this is unfortunate. It is treachery when a father asks a son to jump from a roof top that he will catch him and when he jumps , he not only fails to catch but set spikes for him. The fact that Buhari called for a lesser offensive against Boko haram and recommended amnesty as was done for the militants, should dis-entitle him claiming the government is not effective in the fight, citing non use of lethal force. In other societies, he will be ashamed for blowing hot and cold at same time on same issue. He would've stock to his advice or apologize for wrong advice. Good news, we are back on track. Adamawa has been liberated. Borno state will sure follow suit. We must avoid any attempt at allowing kids to roam the streets at the mercy of desperate politicians. The almajiris in the country need GEJ’s good education initiatives not buhari’s free meal. They do not need Buhari’s #5000 every month; they need GEJ’s initiatives on skills acquisition and job creations. Hillary Clinton had Buhari in mind when she said these “ Let's not leave an educational vacuum to be filled by religious extremists who go to families who have no other option and offer meals, housing and some form of education. If we are going to combat extremism then we must educate those very same children”. The change Buhari wants is a change from light to darkness. http://www.ameboofnaija.com/2015/03/the-change-i-do-not-want-by-ikechukwu.html |

The Oba of Benin, Omon’oba Erediauwa, has assured President Goodluck Jonathan of victory in the forthcoming election slated for March 28. The Oba gave the assurance Thursday in Abuja through his son and a chief in the Benin Kingdom, Ada Erediuwa, who led a delegation of princes and chiefs of the Benin Kingdom on a visit to a former Minister of Information and elder statesman, Edwin Clark. Prince Erediuwa recalled that his father had met with Mr. Jonathan three times adding that while the first meeting was a private affair between the two leaders, the second meeting was a public function when the president went to Edo to commission the refurbished Benin-Lagos expressway. He said the third meeting sometime in September 2014 was the most significant because the Oba presented a “red ododo” to the president. The prince explained that the Oba deliberately gave the president the material to pass a message. He said it was the highest Benin traditional attire and the Oba wore it when he had to go to court. “He wore it and trekked to the court to show he meant business,” Mr. Erediuwa said. “In Benin Kingdom, the ododo represents success and it is a sign of victory. Whoever wears it to the battle field must return home.” Reports in recent past had suggested that the Benin royal house was in conflict with the presidency. However, Mr. Erediuwa said the Oba had made it clear by his actions and words that he supported the president. He, however, stated a “need for the Benin Kingdom to hold a private meeting with the president after the general elections to address all areas of concern.” Mr. Clark, in his remarks said the president considered Benin home. He also pledged to ensure that a meeting between the royal house and the presidency was held as soon as the elections were over. Mr. Clark also said the little misunderstanding between the president and the Benin Kingdom may have to do with the appointment of the former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, ostensibly to replace her husband Christopher Ogiemwonyi, who was from Edo State. He explained that Ms. Oduah was appointed on her own merit having served as the treasurer in the president’s campaign prior to 2011. He said she was appointed to represent Anambra State while an Edo man was also appointed on the constitutional slot of the state and was even posted to the same ministry Mr. Ogienwonyi served in. “There was nothing the president did to spite Edo State,” Mr. Clark said. “What happened was a normal thing in government.” Mr. Clark also said to avoid a repeat of such an incident, the Benin royal house would be consulted “on the appointment of a minister from the state”. He also assured that after the election, which he said the president would win, “Bini will be accorded a pride of place in the government of President Goodluck Jonathan”. On the endorsement of Mr. Jonathan, the elder statesman said he believed “the prince has spoken the mind of the Oba” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/178409-oba-of-benin-assures-jonathan-of-election-victory.html |
By – Adeyinka Shoyemi The gullible Yoruba Youths see the March 28 Presidential Election as a contest between President Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari while the noble Yoruba youths see the election as a contest between the Ooni of Ife and the Sultan of Sokoto. It is a vote to choose between keeping the traditional values of the Yoruba people or the establishment of the Arabian values of Shari’a across Yorubaland. This much was obvious when on October 3, 2011 at the Samuel L and Elizabeth Jodidi Lecture delivered at the Harvard University by the Sultan of Sokoto on “Islam and Peace-Building in West Africa.” In response to a question, the Sultan made bold to say that “he does not recognize any Nigerian constitution and that the only constitution, he recognize is the Quran”. He was applauded by members of the audience including the current Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliu. Yerima Sanni, an ex-governor, held a similar stand as a serving senator of the Federal Republic in an open interview. When interviewed about his peadophiliac marriage to a minor, he said, “I don’t recognize any Nigeria constitution but the Quran”, Therefore, the Emirs, Sultans, Sheiks, Mullahs have no respect for the constitution of Nigeria, yet do not want Nigeria to divide because they see it as the Estate of their grandfather. They determine who becomes what, what to say and not, say, what religion the states adopt or permit, when to kill or spare non-indigenes, who to bomb or spare, who is worthy of the vote no matter how brain dead, who can vote or not irrespective of what age limit the constitution says. By all reasonable standard, Nigeria will remain a joke as long as there is no regional autonomy. The conclusion of the Ooni, Alaafin, Oba of Bini, Olu of Warri, Adeboye, Oyedepo, Oritsajafor, to support Jonathan’s re-election is a clear message to the Sultan of Sokoto, the Emir of Kano, Shehu of Borno, Lamido of Adamawa, Buhari and all the Gambari that they will never again rule over the Yoruba nation and her people. Without any fear of being misunderstood, may I say that the Hausa/Fulani from the North, who are predominantly Muslims, do not have regard for many things and not only the constitution of Nigeria. They are hopelessly corrupt and the more reason they have constantly worked against the restructuring of Nigeria during their 50 year reign, which ended with the inauguration of President Jonathan on May 6, 2010. Two weeks after his lawyers issued a ‘cease and desist’ letter to online newspaper Sahara Reporters, former Minister of State for Defence and newly confirmed Ministerial nominee, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has sued the media outfit and its publisher, Mr. Omoyele Sowore in New York, United States of America for defamation. Tacopina & Seigel, Senator Obanikoro’s US attorneys had issued a ‘cease and desist’ letter to Sahara Reporters urging the media outfit to desist from further defaming Obanikoro and retract its earlier defamatory publications on the purported Ekiti audio recording, none to which Sahara Reporters complied. In a suit filed on behalf of Senator Obanikoro at the Supreme Court of the State of New York dated 9th March 2015 by Tacopina & Seigel, the former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana is seeking legal redress to the tune of a minimum of $5 million. According to the suit with Index No: 152332/2015, the nature of this court action is for defamation arising from false and disparaging statements credited to the Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore during a February 14, 2015 “Sit Out” and on the Sahara Reporters website; “First, that Senator Musiliu Obanikoro “has killed many people in Lagos state” and is a murderer.” “And secondly, that the Sahara Reporters’ website has an audio recording of a purported meeting between Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, Governor Ayo Fayose, Ge. Aliyu Momoh and others that allegedly evidences that: (a) soldiers were paid with a “huge stash of cash” to rig an election in Ekiti; (b) Gen. Momoh was bribed “for his assistance in carrying out election fraud in Ekiti”; (c) “Governor Fayose revealed that he had already bribed an official”; (d) there was “forging in INEC ballots”; and (e) the military prevent[ed] APC voters from reaching the polls.” The relief sought is monetary damages (both compensatory and punitive) to be determined at trial, but for no less than $5,000,000, as well as prejudgment interest, and the costs and disbursements of this action. Hearing is yet to commence in the Nigerian case filed by Senator Obanikoro against Sahara Reporters at the Ikeja High Court, Lagos where he is also seeking damages to the tune of N1 billion. http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/exclusive-senator-obanikoro-sues-sahara-reporters-in-new-york/

While the following projects are ongoing: · Enugu-Abakaliki Road · Ogoja Junction-Ikom Road The Federal Ministry of Works is also embarking on major on-going road projects including the dualization of major arterial highways in the country. These include: Dualization of Abuja-Abaji-Lokoja road in FCT and Kogi State. Dualization of Kano-Maiduguri road in Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe and Borno States. Dualization of Lokoja-Okene-Benin road in Kogi and Edo States. Rehabilitation of Apapa-Oshodi expressway in Lagos State. Construction of Loko-Oweto Bridge over River Benue with approach roads in Nasarawa and Benue States. Dualization of Suleja-Minna road in Niger State. Rehabilitation of Benin-Ore-Shagamu expressway in Edo, Ondo and Ogun States. Rehabilitation of Sokoto-Jega-Kontagora-Makera Road in Sokoto, Kebbi and Niger States Rehabilitation of Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Road in Kano State Rehabilitation of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Lagos and Ogun States Rehabilitation of Ilorin-Kabba-Obajana road in Kwara and Kogi States Rehabilitation of Abakaliki-Afikpo Road in Ebonyi State Rehabilitation of Calabar-Ugep-Katsina Ala Road in Cross River and Benue States Rehabilitation of Vandekiya-Obudu Cattle Ranch Road in Benue and Cross River States, and many more. Very impressive progress has also been made in these on-going dualization and rehabilitation projects. The example, the journey from Benin to Lagos which hitherto took upwards of nine hours in 2011, now takes between three to four hours. Travel time between Abuja and Lokoja has equally improved from an average of four hours to about two hours. Sections of Apapa-Oshodi road which were in deplorable condition in 2011 are now wearing new looks. Travel time on Kano-Maiduguri road has also been reduced by half in the completed sections. In the same vein, while travel time from Owerri to Onitsha is down from two hours to just forty-five minutes, it now takes only about six hours to travel from Owerri to Lagos from an average of fifteen hours it took in 2010. With these improvements, maintenance costs of vehicles have been drastically reduced, thereby increasing the purchasing power of vehicle owners. Not only that; the progress made in the last two years in our road development programme has led to a reduction in the rate of accidents on our roads. For example, our interventions in constructing reinforced concrete balustrade and crash barriers in Ovia River Bridge in Edo State and Tamburawa Bridge in Kaduna State, have addressed the incidences of vehicles plunging into the river with high casualty figures which became a weekly occurrence in both bridges in 2011. This same model is being replicated in other impacted bridges across the country. The construction of a new bridge over River Benue at Loko-Oweto is becoming a reality, as the structural members are fast springing up from the under-waters. During my recent visit to the project site on May 22, 2013, about 115 Piles have been drilled and 1 No. Reinforced Concrete Abutment, as well as 15 Nos. Piers have been constructed. This project which is currently at 25% completion, is progressing satisfactorily and ahead of schedule. Ladies and Gentlemen, following the floods experienced last year in some parts of the country, and its adverse effects on road infrastructure, the Ministry intervened in the following washed out road infrastructure: 1) Construction of 2 Nos. bridges at CH.11+850 (two span) & CH.12+850(three span) along Kano – Katsina road in Katsina State to replace the collapsed 7 cell and 11 cell box culvert respectively. 2) Reinstatement of Washout on Bridge approach & Embankment at CH.0+100 along Shendam-Yelwa-Ibi Road in Plateau State. 3) Reinstatement of Embankment Washout at CH.15+025 along Langtang-Lalin-Tunkus-Shendam Road in Plateau State 4) Reinstatement of washout and reconstruction of collapsed triple cell culvert at 4th Interchange, Enugu-Port Harcourt Dual Carriageway in Enugu State. 5) Constructions of 75m span bridge at Kolo, along Yenegoa-Kolo-Nembe-Brass Road, with Spur to Kolo town, Bayelsa state. 6) Reinstatement of washout sections along Irrua-Illushi Road in Edo State 7) Reinstatement of washout on Lokoja-Abuja Highway at Banda in Kogi State, and many more. PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP PROJECTS The ministry during the period under review embarked on the procurement of the following projects using the Public Private Partnership model: 1. The Second Niger Bridge in Anambra and Delta States 2. Apakun/Oshodi–Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road in Lagos State 3. Nupeko Bridge Across the River Niger in Niger State. While a successful bidder (Julius Berger-AIIM Consortium) has been announced for the 2nd Niger Bridge and pre-contract works have started on the bridge, the process for the selection of the successful bidders in the other two projects is ongoing and a preferred bidder each will be announced for the projects by July 2013. ROAD MAINTENANCE BY FERMA Road maintenance under the Federal Ministry of Works is carried out by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA). In the last two years, FERMA has been repositioned and equipped with state of the art Mobile Pothole Patchers and its capacity enhanced for prompt intervention on federal roads. Two Nos. Asphalt Plants was acquired by FERMA some years ago and abandoned, have been installed and commissioned in Kuje and Lagos. Five others are being installed in Enugu, Ikot-Ekpene, Osogbo, Gombe and Funtua to serve the needs of FERMA in its road maintenance activities across the country. Since the beginning of this administration, FERMA has been involved in the recovering of road washouts, general maintenance and vegetation control in some federal highways in the country. In 2012 alone, a total of 1, 980 km of road corridors were maintained by the Agency while an area of 1,337,343 square metres of pot-holes have been patched. Some of the notable corridors maintained by the Agency (FERMA) in the past two years, include: 1. Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road 2. Jos-Bauchi Road 3. Asaba-Benin Road 4. Okene-Auchi-Benin Road 5. Sapele-Agbor-Uromi Road 6. Mbiama-Yenegoa Road 7. Lafia-Makurdi Road 8. Katsina-Dutsinma-Kankara Road 9. Okene-Kabba-Omuo-Ekiti Road 10. Kajiji-Gimi Road 11. Gusau-Talata Mafara-Sokoto Road 12. 9th Mile-Obollo Afor-Otukpa Road 13. Onne-Port Harcourt Road, and 14. Otukpa-Anyagba Road With FERMA’s preventive maintenance policy, coupled with the road surveillance campaign, many more corridors will be maintained in the next two years. In addition, over 4,000 youths have been engaged, mobilized and trained by FERMA on road maintenance and are currently carrying out maintenance works in most of our road corridors under the SURE-Programme. NEW POLICY INITIATIVES Within the past two years, the Federal Ministry of Works under my leadership has implemented a number of policy initiatives that promise to positively impact on service delivery in the road sector in the years ahead. Some of these policies include: 1. Abolition of the use of cut-back bitumen (MC-1) and its replacement with bitumen emulsion, thereby freeing kerosene for domestic usage and promoting environmentally friendly construction methodologies in road projects. 2. Introduction of a new project management template that makes provision for the valuation of only permanent works in Interim Statements/Certificates, thereby deepening performance management approach to road development, and mitigating frequent augmentation of projects consequent on wash-out of on-going road projects, and 3. Introduction of the of the “Safe Passage” policy that ensures that road corridors on subsisting contracts are maintained and made motorable by Contractors throughout the duration of the projects. ROAD SECTOR REFORMS In the past two years, the Federal Ministry of Works under my watch, has pursued relentlessly the reform of the Road Sector, to bring it in sync with its counterparts in other parts of the World as to fully professionalize road development in Nigeria, and provide better services to road users in our country in line with international best practice. Already, the National Council on Privatization (NCP) has approved the proposed Road Sector Reform Bill and will be transmitted to the National Assembly after approval by the Federal Executive Council. It is pertinent to state here that once the Reform Bill is passed into law, it will lead to the establishment of a Road Authority and a Road Fund, which will help to ensure better funding of road projects in our country. CONCLUSION Distinguished stakeholders, Ladies and Gentlemen, if the purpose of Government is the pursuance of happiness for the greater number of citizens, clearly, the Government of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, has achieved this purpose through the transformation of the road sector these past two years. Today, our citizens are able to travel happily on our roads from one part of the country to another without the uncertainty of arrival that hitherto marked road transportation in Nigeria by 2011 when this Administration came into being. Looking ahead, the next two years hold even bigger and bolder promises for Nigerian road users, as the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works strives to deliver two new bridges across the two great rivers that define our country – the River Niger and the River Benue: I am referring to the 2nd Niger Bridge at Onitsha-Asaba over the River Niger and the Loko-Oweto Bridge across the River Benue. Not only that; the Government of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, will also complete the on-going dual-carriageway projects across the country that will have the salutary effect of enabling our citizens to travel from one part of the country to another, without regards to their geo-political zone of residence, in an un-broken chain of dual carriageways. Distinguished stakeholders, Members of the Media, Ladies and Gentlemen, the transformation of the road sector in our Country, is on an irreversible forward movement, and it is already yielding good fruits. While many more dividends will follow as we make more progress on this journey, I wish to state unequivocally that for Nigerian road users, better days are here again! I thank you for your attention. Arc. Mike Onolememen, fnia; fnim; fnis Hon. Minister of Works Federal Ministry of Works Abuja 3rd June, 2013 http://nigeriapolitico.net/news1/1766-significant-strides-in-road-dev-since-the-inception-of-jonathans-administration-onolememen.html |
The Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Oziegbe Onolememen in his presentation on the mid-term achievements of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in the transformation of the road sector in Nigeria, at the 2013 ministerial platform, said the Federal Ministry of Works has made significant strides in road development since the inception of the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR in 2011. Full story here: PRESENTATION BY THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF WORKS, ARC. MIKE OZIEGBE ONOLEMEMEN, FNIA; FNIM; FNIS ON THE MID-TERM ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR, IN THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE ROAD SECTOR IN NIGERIA AT THE 2013 MINISTERIAL PLATFORM Protocols The Federal Ministry of Works has made significant strides in road development since the inception of the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR in 2011. By May 29, 2011, Nigerian roads were described as death traps and many road projects were abandoned, while a number of on-going projects were moving at snail speed. It was a nightmare to travel on Nigerian roads. Clearly, the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR and the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Works were confronted with a situation that required urgent and far reaching changes and reforms especially in the areas of policy, management and financing of roads infrastructure in Nigeria. A paradigm shift became inevitable in the development of roads infrastructure in our country. The management of the Federal Ministry of Works under my leadership felt the urgency to reclaim the National Road Network from the state of disrepair this administration met it and elevate it to an enviable state where it could once again help to promote economic growth and national integration. About two years on, Nigerian roads can no longer be described as “death-traps” due to the remarkable improvement in the condition of the roads as a result of the unprecedented rehabilitation, construction and expansion of major arterial highways under the leadership of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. Today, travel times between origins and destinations on most of these arterial routes have been drastically reduced. Also maintenance costs of vehicles have been reduced as a result of improved driving surfaces, devoid of potholes that hitherto put “holes” in the pockets of vehicle owners due to frequent repairs occasioned by bad roads. Critical stakeholders in the road sector have publicly acknowledged the breath of fresh air in road transportation in our country due to the improved condition of our roads. One of the transport companies in our country, ABC Transport Company recently slashed its fares in a widely circulated advert in The Punch newspaper of Monday, May 20, 2013 with the caption, “The Roads Are Getting Better” and gave its reason solely as the marked improvement on our arterial roads! This is one of the outcomes of the Transformation Agenda in the road sector. When this Administration assumed office on May 29, 2011, it made a conscious decision to complete major road rehabilitation projects in the country that were either on-going or abandoned and to scale up maintenance works on Federal roads across the country. The “Operation Safe Passage” embarked upon by the Ministry in the 4th quarter of 2012 led to the recovering of failed portions of Federal roads across the country; from Ilorin to Jebba, Lafia to Makurdi, Aliade to Oturkpo, Oturkpo to 9th Mile, Enugu to Port Harcourt, Kano to Katsina, Lokoja to Okene, Okene to Benin, Lagos to Ibadan, and Odukpani to Itu. Many other Federal roads criss-crossing the length and breadth of our country have been maintained these past two years. Following the successes recorded in the past two years, Nigerian roads have again truly become not only veritable economic arteries supporting economic growth, but also a tool for National integration. DETAILED MID-TERM ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE MINISTRY OF WORKS In 2011, in order to make the management of the nation’s road network and on-going projects more effective and efficient, the two highway departments (Highway, Planning & Design and Highway, Construction & Rehabilitation) were restructured into twelve departments, namely: 1) Highways, Planning and Development 2) Highways, Road Design 3) Highways, Bridge Design 4) Highways, Materials, Geotechnics and Quality Control 5) Highways, Public Private Partnership (PPP) 6) Highways, Road Sector Development Team (RSDT) 7) Highways, Construction & Rehabilitation-North Central Zone Highways, Construction & Rehabilitation-North East Zone9) Highways, Construction & Rehabilitation-North West Zone 10) Highways, Construction & Rehabilitation-South East Zone 11) Highways, Construction & Rehabilitation-South West Zone 12) Highways, Construction & Rehabilitation-South-South Zone) This restructuring exercise and the management training that followed brought about an attitudinal change in the Ministry, anchored on the transformation of the workforce into a well-motivated and empowered one, ready to put in its utmost best far beyond expectations. In order to enhance checks and balances and promote transparency in road development projects, six (6) Zonal Ministerial Independent Monitoring Teams, made up of membership from the private sector were set up by me in the 3rd quarter of 2011, to monitor construction and rehabilitation efforts in the zones and based on their findings, provide independent quarterly reports on projects in the zones to my Office. This has become a reliable project management tool in the administration’s efforts to improve service delivery in the road sector. With this new structure in place, the Federal Ministry of Works, under my leadership, has been able to make momentous improvements on the rehabilitation, reconstruction and expansion of the Federal Roads Network in these past two years. Thus far, we have completed 32 Nos. road projects covering about 2,000 km and many more are nearing completion. The 32 Nos. road projects completed during the period under review include: Completion of the Dualization of Ibadan-Ilorin road section I (Ibadan - Oyo) in Oyo State. The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the State Governor to account for over 136 billion Naira SURE-P largesse allocated to Lagos State. The party claims the money was collected by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola. In a statement issued by the Lagos State PDP spokesman, Taofik Gani, the party noted that the amount was enough to build at least 100,000 low cost accommodation and adequate hostels on all the state’s tertiary campuses. “In spite of the huge state internally generated revenue (IGR) and the over 136 billion Naira SURE-P largesse over the years, Lagos residents are still lacking many ordinary social services. “Where they are available, Lagosians (Lagos residents) pay exorbitant to enjoy such,” the party stated. According to the statement: “even the APC governorship Candidate’s campaign jingles, posters and other messages are clear vote of no confidence in the services rendered by Governor Fashola. “This is because Mr Ambode has himself declared emergency in virtually all the sectors of governance in the state by proposing trust and emergency funds in the sectors.” The Akinwunmi Ambode is the Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PPD re-emphasised its confidence in defeating the APC in the coming general elections. “We are good to go and defeat APC in the coming elections. Fashola was able to cajole Lagos residents for some years with pseudo and momentary projects, while neglecting areas of governance that affect the masses most,” the party said. The PDP, describing the Governor as a mediocre in governance, said it would capitalise on the flaws of Governor Fashola’s administration to defeat of the APC in the state. http://www.channelstv.com/2015/03/01/give-account-of-136bn-naira-sure-p-largesse-pdp-tells-fashola/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

The London Trip Of Presidential Candidate Of The All Progressives Congress (APC), Maj- Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Indicates That The Party Is Now Broke And May Have Lost Steam In The Pursuit Of Its Goal Backed By Propaganda And Lies Paul Yovo, Lagos Despite repeated claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that its presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari is in London to honour a date with Chatham House, The UNION has however, authoritatively, been informed that the candidate is actually in the United Kingdom on revenue drive. A source which is very close to the General, confirmed to The UNION, under condition of anonymity, that “he went to UK in search of money”. According to our source, the APC campaign fund had dried up leaving the presidential candidate with no other option than flying into the UK to meet with people he believed would throw in money into his project. The source further disclosed that Buhari had already met with some Arab friends and South African representatives, whom he believed would likely fund his campaign till March 28 when the presidential election is scheduled to hold. Though our source did not disclose identities of Buhari’s Arab friends, he said that “they are oil rich Arab friends who are looking for a way to launder their money”. He further said, “You know these Arabs have a lot of money, most of which they get from corrupt sources. He (Buhari) believes they may help him out”. Asked if the Arab friends are actually willing to drop their money, our source said “you know these people are gamblers”. Buhari’s London visit had been shrouded in secrecy as his schedule meeting with the Nigerian community had to be shifted three times within minutes, just as to keep away inquisitive eyes. A Nigerian blogger resident in London had blogged about the meeting, wondering why the venue was changed three times in a row with the actual venue not disclosed to Nigerians. He had said that Nigerians who waited at the last publicised venue, waited in vain as Buhari did not show up. According to the blogger, Buhari’s wife and some family members eventually showed up at the venue but the APC presidential candidate did not turn up till past midnight when most of them left. The UNION further gathered that Buhari decided to go abroad when it became difficult for him to convince APC governors to throw in more money into the campaign. He was also said to have failed to convince former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to prevail on his South African allies to bring in more money. Our source disclosed that “part of the money he gave to Buhari came from his South African friends but they are not willing to give him more”. It was learnt that he had made attempts at convincing some APC governors, notably those of Rivers and Kano states to open state vaults for the campaign, a request, which The UNION gathered, leadership of the party could not even push. Buhari has found it difficult to penetrate Kano State as his face-off with Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over the choice of Umar Ganduje as Kwankwaso’s successor, had left him in limbo. Already, the Kwankwaso group, popular as Kwankwasiyya, The UNION gathered, had vowed to vote against Buhari for his refusal to accord Ganduje, Kwankwaso’s anointed successor, the recognition he deserved. Buhari had refused to recognise Ganduje in preference for gate-jumping- member of the House of Representatives, Suleiman Kawu, who it was learnt had been his ally. The face-off had pitched Buhari against Kwankwaso who it was also learnt, had effectively blocked access to funds from the state for APC. The UNION further learnt, that having failed to secure funds from Kano State government, the party turned its attention to Rivers State hoping that Rotimi Amaechi would unlock the state vaults for the party again like he had earlier done. It was learnt that the APC met a brickwall in River State as leaders of the state now focused more on the finances of the state and are asking questions which the governor is yet to answer favourably. For instance, leaders of the state are still asking the governor to explain source of the N11,086,000.00 which Amaechi spent in funding a trip to London for APC members including Chief of Staff to the governor, Chief Tony Okocha, Mr. Preye Aganaba, Philemon Adjekulo, and Uche Igwe in September 2014. Documents from Rivers State government obtained by The UNION, indicate that Amaechi had ordered Zenith Bank Plc to release the said amount to Okocha, his Chief of Staff to effect the trip.Okocha had in a memo dated September 2, 2014 and addressed to Gov. Amaechi, titled RE: APC SESSION AT THE UK HOUSE OF COMMONS, told the governor that “Martin Brown, Senior Political Adviser, Extractive Industries Group, is inviting four (4) APC party faithful in the state to a scheduled session at the UK House of Commons which will dwell on: The Challenges of Insecurity in Nigeria and Boko Haram Insurgency on September 8, 2014. “The topic is very apt today when PDP is casting aspersions of Boko Haram sponsoring on our party (APC). Distinguished leaders from our party like Lai Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary, frontline leader, Mallam Nasir Elrufai are also to speak. “The total cost of the journey including flight tickets and accommodation is N11,086,000 (Eleven Million and Eighty Six Thousand Naira) only”. Okocha further gave a breakdown of the amount to indicate that he was to get N1,740,000.00 while Aganaba, Igwe and Adjekulo were to receive N870,000 each. The sum of N6,736,000 was written off as flight tickets at N1,684,000 each. In convincing Amaechi to order release of the money, Okocha wrote that “the session is part of systematic effort to re-engineer global public perception of our party APC”. Gov. Amaechi approved release of the same amount the following day when he minuted on the memo: “COS/COM.Fin/AG approved. Pls pay N11,086,000 (Eleven Million and eighty six thousand naira) only”. Interestingly, while Amaechi approved release of the money on September 3, a letter to Zenith Bank, ordering release of the same amount, was dated September 2. In the letter with reference number GHPH/008/S.5/07566 addressed to the Manager, Zenith Bank Port Harcourt, Amaechi authorised release of the same amount to Okocha. This deal, which most Rivers State leaders find awful remain unexplained and have however attracted greater attention to the management of state funds by Amaechi. Our source also said “that is part of the reasons he is no longer ready to bring out money like he used to. Wike and the others are close-marking him”. It was also learnt that Buhari may have met some South African allies of Atiku in the bid to convince them to throw in more money into the campaign. However, The UNION gathered that the refusal by expected funding sources to agree to release more money to Buhari may not be unconnected with the perception that he has lost grounds in the campaigns and will not be able to dislodge the PDP from the presidency as earlier expected. “Some of them are no longer ready to fund him because they believe he has lost grounds to PDP. The shift in the election date has greatly affected him and PDP has recovered tremendously”, our source noted. Another top security source told The UNION that Buhari’s campaign funding partners are weary of dropping more money because they now know he cannot win the election due to rising public awareness about his past and his support to radical Islam. Spokesman of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Garba Shehu, had in an earlier report, hinted that APC may have run out of financial steam when he told The UNION in a response to question about the funding of ‘clerics’ for Buhari’s phantom endorsement, that Buhari has no money for such project. “Where is the money to rent them going to come from? Buhari doesn’t have NNPC; he doesn’t have Sure- P neither does he have NEMA. So, where is the money going to come from”, Shehu had asked. http://theunion.com.ng/buharis-uk-mission-exposed-seeks-campaign-funding-from-arabs/ |
Iniobong Ekponta, Uyo With the tempo of electioneering gradually thawing following the shift in dates of the general elections to hold between March 28 and April 11, political parties have withdrawn temporarily into their cocoons to retool their strategies for more edge over others at the polls. Cashing in on the six weeks extension, the Accord Party (AP) in Akwa Ibom State at the weekend took time off to shop for more cash, as party stakeholders gathered for a fundraising in aid of the governorship candidates, Bishop Samuel Akpan’s quest to wrest power from the outgoing Governor Godswill Akpabio. Besides, the fund-raising ceremony, The Union learnt, was to support the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan, following the adoption of Jonathan as the Presidential choice of the AP. It was at the South-South Zonal Secretariat of the Goodluck Mandate Group (GMG), along Edet Akpan Avenue, Uyo, where stakeholders and supporters of the AP including its Chairman, Mr. Joseph Itiaba, gathered to take stock at the party’s chances at the forthcoming polls. Akpan, former chief mobilizer to Governor Akpabio in the run up to his election in 2007, quit the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when it was obvious he would not get the State backing and the party’s endorsement for the State’s political top job in the next dispensation. Addressing Journalists, the one-time Special Adviser to Akpabio on Political and Legislative Affairs, who later became the Deputy Chairman of the PDP in the State, said his entry into the race from whatever platform, was divinely ordained. Assuring his supporters of his resolve to run the State along the paths of equity, justice and fair-play, Akpan, who chairs the South-South chapter of the GMG, said he was on a mission to re-design the development roadmap of the 27-year-old State, adding that industrialization, education, health, agriculture, jobs and wealth creation would form the fulcrum of his agenda for the State if elected. The former PDP chieftain, who was also made to chair a dysfunctional State Road Maintenance Agency, pledged to work towards the return of President Jonathan, even on the Accord Party platform, and appealed to the President to “be careful with those he is dealing with in Akwa Ibom”. http://theunion.com.ng/aibom-accord-party-supports-jonathan-campaign-with-n1bn/ |
Youths Of Agwa Community Descended On Gov. Rochas Okorocha With Stones And Sachet Water Over Alleged Failed Promises And Non Recognition Of Their Traditional Damian Dururiheoma, Owerri Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State may be harvesting crisis by the minutes, as youths from Mgbala Agwa Community in Ohaji/Egbema local government area, have added to his headache which was increased by the curse on him, last Sunday, by widows over the abuse meted out to them, allegedly, by his agents and assigns. Still battling to stave off effects of the curse, Okorocha fell victim to youths of Agwa, who descended on his convoy, pelting it with stones, sachet water and wooden rods. Eye witnesses to the drama told The UNION that Okorocha escaped by the hairs breathe. According to our reporter, the situation was saved by the police and other security agents who had to shoot repeatedly into the air to disperse the angry mob. The incident happened barely one month after the governor was attacked by angry youths in Mmahu Egbema, the headquarters of Ohaji Egbema council area of the state, when he visited the area for his re-election campaign. According to eye witnesses, the incident, which happened at Mgbala Agwa community last weekend, saw the angry youths breaking windshields and windows on about three vehicles on the convoy and seriously denting some others. The youths, it was learnt, are angry with Okorocha for allegedly failing to provide any government presence in their area. They also accuse him of allegedly failing to address the question of their traditional stool which had long been in contention. Community sources told our correspondent that the governor was in the community to campaign but was greeted by angry youths on arrival. According to our sources, some of the aggrieved natives refused that the governor will address them as they disrupted his campaign with anti-Okorocha chants. They also called him names while hurling stones and wooden robs at his convoy. The situation however descended to a free-for-all as few minutes after the governor’s escape, another group of youth, said to be numbering about 200, entered the community and allegedly attacked the anti-Okorocha group. This, The UNION learnt, led to free for all as the two opposing groups freely used varied weapons on themselves. More than a dozen youths were said to have sustained injuries from the melee. However, the Police has said that “there were no reported fatalities or injuries”, adding that investigations into the attack had begun. The UNION was however told by community residents that some of the youths sustained machete cuts. One eyewitness told The UNION that the angry youths took the decision in response to what they described as the poor governance in the area and inability of the governor to recognise their choice traditional ruler, his involvement in denying the people of the area their right from the State House of Assembly, among other grievances. Commissioner for Petroleum and Environment, Prof. Okey Okoro confirmed the incident. He however denied that the governor’s vehicle was touched by the angry youths. According to Okoro who said he was not in the convoy, “it was only the last of the buses in the governor’s convoy that was hurled with stones and that there was no incident of police shooting in the air as the situation was not as fierce as some people wanted to make it”. The Imo State Police Command said it was probing the “unfortunate” attack and warned that those found culpable would be made to face the law. Though, the Police Spokesman, Andrew Enwerem, was not available to respond to enquiries from our correspondent, a senior police officer told The UNION that the police would not “fold its arms and allow such unbecoming behaviour by the youths”. Meanwhile, irate youths from Izombe Town in Oguta LGA of Imo State have threatened to shut down all oil wells managed by Chevron Nigeria Limited if Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Anthony Anwuka does not stop meddling in the affairs of Jisike Regional Development Foundation (JRDF), led by one Mr. Ogochukwu Akopunwanne. JRDF is a community-based organisation (CBO) established based on global memorandum of understanding between the communities in Izombe and the oil exploration companies in the area, including Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL. The irate youths who besieged office of the SSG last weekend in their numbers, accused the SSG, a native of Oguta LGA, of plotting to dissolve the members of the JRDF who were properly constituted and even recommended to CNL in September 2014 by both the SSG and the state Ministry of Petroleum. The angry youths declared that any attempt to further interfere in the activities of the JRDF by the SSG with intention of dissolving it would be an invitation to chaos, a development they said would not guarantee the operations of the multi-nationals in the area especially Chevron. The UNION gathered that Mr. Akopunwanne-led JRDF was being persecuted because he failed to participate in the All Progressives Congress (APC), House of Assembly primaries for Oguta State Constituency last December, 2014 and had since been termed a PDP member in order to remove him. The youths accused the Special Adviser to the governor on petroleum, Kamma Nwauwa of fuelling crisis in the area because he wants to control the activities of the foundation. Reacting to the incident, the SSG denied trying to dissolve the JRDF members, saying he only recommended the list of members brought to him by traditional rulers in the area. Prof. Anwuka, who spoke through his political adviser, Chief Clement Maduka, insisted that none of the people in the JRDF was known to him and therefore he could not have made any input if not directed by the leaders of the community. According to him, stakeholders from Izombe including the Special Adviser to the governor on petroleum, Kamma Nwauwa constituted the list and brought it for the SSG for ratification, adding that Prof. Anwuka had no interest in the area because he is not from there. http://theunion.com.ng/again-youths-attack-okorocha-pelt-convoy-with-stones-wooden-rods/ |

By Simeon Nwakaudu Contrary to views expressed by Dakuku Peterside, Rivers State APC Governorship Candidate during an interview with media chiefs in Lagos at the weekend, the people of Rivers State have wholeheartedly rejected Dakuku Peterside, Rotimi Amaechi and their unproductive APC. This fact has been expressed by the people all through the 23 local government areas, the markets, the streets, the development associations, non indigenes, women and youth groups. The voice of the people cannot be silenced by a few minutes of paid interview with media executives in Lagos as the people of Rivers State have lined up behind the Wike-Banigo ticket. Unfortunately for APC, their candidate is a stooge to the non-performing outgoing governor Rotimi Amaechi who has woefully failed the Rivers people in all sectors. Peterside’s regrettable declaration during the paid interview session that he will continue with the failed legacies of outgoing Governor Amaechi is the principal reason why he has been rejected. Amaechi has the unenviable legacy of being the most corrupt and extravagant governor in the history of Nigeria, Rivers people have vowed not to allow this cesspool of corruption to continue. Therefore, they have shut the door against Dakuku. Amaechi is footing the bills of the APC Presidential Candidate while denying Rivers State development in all 23 LGAs, hence the people of Rivers State have rejected APC and Peterside on this ground as they will not allow a continuation of this anomaly. Amaechi, Dakuku’s political godfather is the master of fictitious projects and abandoned projects used to line pockets of APC chieftains. The people of Rivers State have taken a decision to vote against APC because they will not allow this ugly Amaechi legacy to continue under Dakuku. It is true that APC has deep pockets from the proceeds of their mass corruption in Rivers State. This can only buy them air-time on electronic media, presence on social media and pages of newspaper interviews. This will never translate to votes. Everywhere in Rivers State, the people are with Barrister Wike, President Jonathan and the PDP. No amount of lies and propaganda can save the APC from the impending thrashing at the polls. This is about development and capacity, which Barrister Wike and Dr Mrs. Banigo have in abundance backed by the overwhelming acceptance of the people. When APC leaders sent their thugs to unleash unprecedented violence on Barrister Wike when he campaigned at Abua/Odual LGA at the Palace of the Traditional Ruler, leading to the death of four youths with several party supporters injured, the people defied the ugly antics of the APC and participated in the rally. Since then, APC and their supporters have continued with their promotion of violence. Political violence in Rivers state is purely the handiwork of Governor Amaechi, Dakuku Peterside and the APC. They stand condemned for attempting to use violence to distract the people ahead of the elections. The APC should have the courage to withdraw their forces of violence. Barrister Wike is a man of peace and promotes peaceful electioneering process and will have nothing to do with violence. As we head for the March 28 and April 11 polls, Dakuku Peterside and his associates must realize their resort to propaganda has already failed them. Barrister Wike remains the choice of the people of the state. He has been endorsed by people from all parts of the state. He won a keenly contested PDP primary while Dakuku Peterside was imposed on the APC by the failed outgoing Rivers State State. Dakuku must be told that he is an offspring of undemocratic process and can never win in a democratic contest. As a man who stares defeat in the face, Dakuku can to continue with his self-delusion, but victory belongs to Barrister Wike and PDP. The future of Rivers State cannot be mortgaged on the altar of extremely corrupt platform that hates development. It is PDP all the way. http://scannewsnigeria.com/politics/rivers-people-have-already-rejected-peterside-amaechi/ |

The Honourable Governor B.R. Fashola (SAN) has lied again and I think it's time to address his repeated blunder. With regards to my taxes, there is no truth in this latest piece of misinformation that the Honourable Governor has been peddling. Following the repudiation of his initial allegations about JAYKAY PHARMACEUTICALS unpaid taxes, he has lied again, giving the impression that my company has gone to pay money supposedly owed to the government. JAYKAY PHARMACEUTICALS has not paid a kobo since the day the Honourable Governor launched his initial attack. We stick to the facts contained in our initial publication, which encapsulated the company's reaction to the Governor’s initial falsehood. To now insinuate that I have gone behind the curtains to pay N500,000 is clearly political silly season - for lack of a better phrase - and quite frankly, beneath your person. It's understandable that we've both had our differences in course of this election season, but when the Honorable Governor goes about launching unbridled, flat-out-false attacks at me about something as important as taxes, you leave me no choice but to call you out, Sir. When I got into this race, I decided to make it about the issues. My opponents? Not so much. They talked about me being inexperienced and at some point they said I was "too old to govern" and we responded with BOLD IDEAS intended to put Lagos on a new trajectory - one that is NOT based on Jagaban's tax-and-spend economics but on a framework that would radically push us to new economic frontiers for some of the most under-developed regions in the state like Epe and Ikorodu. They ridiculed our ideas around government-enabled free wifi hotspots across the city - an idea targeted at widening the reach of a world of knowledge that the Internet offers to our young and aspiring populace - especially in areas of low penetration. They called it bold ignorance and out of touch with reality yet they went on to implement wifi Internet-enabled buses a couple of weeks afterwards. As much as we're glad that our BOLD IDEAS inspire you as much as they do us, one must begin to question the seriousness of the opposition in Lagos to make this election about the issues. How ever you cut or dissect our success as a state over the last 16-years, the fact is that Lagos in the Economic intelligence Unit (EIU) is still ranked 137th out of 140 cities listed in the liveability index. This means that if you take 140 cities worldwide where people consider good to live in, Lagos is the fourth worst place to live in. Apart from this, a World Bank survey shows that of the 36 states in Nigeria, Lagos is still the worst state in terms of the ease of securing Building Permits. It is still on record too that the party the Honourable Governor represents has delivered less than 5,000 housing units till date. It is still on record that more students in Lagos fail WAEC than those who pass. Even when we consider corruption, we are aware that Honourable Governor Fashola is yet to challenge anyone for corruption at the state level. Or is he saying Lagos is 100 percent corruption-free? Yet he goes about castigating the Federal Government. He should walk his talk and lead by example – expose and prosecute high-ranking corrupt officials in his government and the state civil service. The corruption in the Lekki Toll Plaza will be made public in due cause. Clearly, we still have a lot of work to do as a state but the Honourable Governor Babatunde Fashola has set out to exploit the commanding heights he occupies in the seat of government to bully us. And quite frankly, we shall stand up to bullies. I think what Lagosians should begin to ask is what is driving the Honourable Governor Fashola’s violent outbursts? What has he got to hide? Other than lay the facts bare to enable the public form an informed opinion. I refuse to be baited into his self-declared verbal warfare. My politics and campaign will be issues-based and no roforofo badmouthing from anyone, no matter how highly placed, will steer me away from development-based politicking. There are more pressing issues, more important conversations to have and more problems to solve and the people of Lagos are wondering if their leaders get it. The teachers, the students, the blacksmiths, the bankers, the taxi-man, the small-business owners, they all hope that their leaders understand that the outcome of this election and the future of this state is bigger than any one personality or party. Whatever we do or commit to doing determines whether they have food to put on their tables; whether they can own homes, pay salaries or that their children get to attend schools of their choice. They deserve better. The people definitely deserve better. BY JIMI AGBAJE. JK I KNOW, JK I TRUST |
