Politics › TARABA CRISIS: Commotion In Taraba Assembly As House Defies Court Order by espn(op): 5:55pm On Nov 12, 2013

The ongoing wrangling in the Taraba state House of Assembly has entered a new phase, as some of its members walked out of the hallow chamber following the refusal of the leadership of the House to respect the High Court Order restraining the House from screening the commissioner nominees.

On November 11, 2013, Monday, names of six commissioners were submitted to the House for screening by the Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, and the members collectively agreed to commence the screening exercise today by 10 a.m.

Surprise came when the screening which was scheduled for 10 a.m. was carried out as early as 9a.m. The action was clearly aimed at avoiding the Court Order.

When contacted, the new Speaker, Josiah Sabo Kente, denied receiving the Court Order, stating that he had not seen any court Order. He added that the reps would look into it immediately after they received it.

The members that walked out of the sitting included the former speaker, Rt. Hon. Istifanus Haruna Gbana, former deputy speaker, Abel Peter Diah, Charles Audu and Gambo Maikudi.

In their talk to the newsmen, they claimed that the Court Order was issued to them before the sitting.

"On receiving the Court Order I personally went and showed it to the speaker and advised on the need to adhere to the Order but I was surprise that he and some of the members still went ahead and conducted the screening," the former speaker said.

In the same vein, Haruna Gbana said he went the extra mile to show the speaker copy of the Court Order that was served him by the court bailiff. This copy has been probably manhandled by the speaker and his aides.

Efforts by LEGISREPORTS to get the bailiff's reaction yielded positive results as he narrates his oldies on how he was ordered by the speaker to be bundled out of the premises of the House of Assembly.

The bailiff, Markus Gaddas, narrated the following on reaching the House of Assembly:

"I asked of the clerk but was I was informed that he is not around, so I then asked of the speaker.

"On the arrival of the speaker, I followed him to his office but waited for him at the reception. So when he eventually came out of his office, I gave him the Order and I as well showed him my I.D. card but he pushed me away.

"I have never for once been disgraced in such a way," the bailiff, who was visibly dejected following the inhuman treatment melted on him by the number three citizen of the state, concluded.

As that was not enough, someone else according to him "came out and said that the speaker said I should be bundle out of the premises of the House of Assembly" the directive, which according to him was immediately carried out, as he was carried shoulder high out of the premises.

"I went ahead to display the Order on the main gate of the House of Assembly, but one of the policemen came and pushed me and then tore the Orders into pieces," Markus Gaddas said.

The said Order which was signed by the Chief Judge of High Court Four, Ali Ibrahim Andeyangtso, as observed by LEGISREPORTS, seeks to halt the Defendants from approving the appointment of commissioners pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiff motion on notice.

Politics › REVEALED: Why Jonathan, Wife Are Fighting Me – Amaechi by espn(op): 6:28pm On Nov 11, 2013

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi has disclosed that he incurred the wrath of President Goodluck Jonathan because he was seen to be exposing a lot of corrupt activities going on in government.

In an interview to TheNEWS magazine, Gov. Amaechi also gave the impression that the President and his wife can never keep to their promises, recalling how they held several meetings with him begging him to deliver the state to Jonathan during the 2011 presidential election with the promise that they would never trouble him again, a promise they did not keep.

Gov. Amaechi listed many instances where his actions infuriated President Jonathan and the First Lady, whom he described as a 'de facto President'.

According to Gov. Amaechi, one of the main reasons for the battle to bring him down is the desperate ambition of Dame Patience Jonathan to see herself and be addressed as the political 'lord' of Rivers State, her home state, despite the fact that she is even not recognised by the constitution and is not occupying any elective office.

He recalled a recent accident which has occurred in the hometown of the First Lady, Okrika. Dame Patience snatched the microphone from Gov. Amaechi reprimanded him for saying he would buy off some buildings around a school and demolish it so as to create enough space for extracurricular activities for the school.

Governor Amaechi attributed the crisis to three things:

"The first was the attempt by the wife of the President to control the Rivers State government. I remember when female senators came to me after she met with them.

"She said to them: 'I am the highest ranking officer from Rivers State and I wonder why the Governor of Rivers State does not accord me that respect'.

"I said in law, I don't see the office of the wife of the President being superior to that of the governor…The resistance is what you are seeing."

During Jonathan's campaigns for 2011, he said the President and his wife pleaded with him since he (Amaechi) wanted to be assured that if Jonathan emerged, there would not be a multiplicity of presidents where "you have the wife manipulating power, everybody doing one thing or the other".

"I wanted to make sure that I and the Rivers people are fully protected. I wasn't convinced.

"Now, within the period, the President had called me and the wife and we sat together and made peace. There again, they promised that nobody would hurt me, nobody would do this or that. That's why this is a bit difficult because there is nothing new that they can tell me that they did not tell me in 2011 and they did not keep to their promise".

He said the meeting was just between him, the President and Mrs. Jonathan and he secured their promise to protect him, but "we had hardly won the 2011 elections when the wife descended on me and the Rivers State Government".

"Basically, the only way you can survive is if you then wake up in the morning to say: 'Good morning, ma. My name is Rotimi Amaechi, governor of Rivers State. Do I greet this person or that person'?

"If she says no, then I don't greet you. But if you need to run the office of the governor the way it is supposed to be run, then you would certainly have a disagreement with the wife of the President.

"It is about power and control. She appears to be somebody who loves power."

The governor also said part of the problem was that the President took about 41 oil wells from Rivers and handed them to Abia and Bayelsa, the President's state.

He also said the President was not comfortable with the fact that he (Amaechi) speaks his mind whenever he had the opportunity.

For example, he said he had complained many times about the rising poverty and corruption among public office holders in the country to no avail even as the country's economy is in bad shape.

Another incident that pitched Amaechi against the President was that the former accused the World Bank, during an event abroad, of aiding Nigeria's lamentable corruption.

He also lamented the increasing activities of oil thieves, adding that attempts by his government to subdue the thieves have also been scuttled by the President because of the problem between them, thus making the country suffer the consequence.

"My colleague, the governor of Benue State, told me that teachers are on strike in his state because of salary. And you would see more in the next few months. The country is broke.

"The amount of money being stolen is enough to run this economy. They set aside 455,000 barrels per day for local refining. We don't refine in Nigeria. Crude is refined overseas, brought back to Nigeria and then we pay subsidy on it," he said.

Our govt needs to suport talents lik dis..instead of fighting over who is going to be der party secretary or chairman..hopeless leaders!
Science/Technology › ‘my Next Target Is To Build An Aeroplane’ - 17-yr-old Engineering Prodigy Says by espn(op): 6:58am On Nov 11, 2013
A 17-year-old secondary school student, Ismaila Suraju, has built a planting machine and a locally-made power generator that uses water and batteries, among others.

The boy doesn't plan to stop, he says his next goal is to build an aeroplane. Ismaila also claims to have a know-how to create a gadget that can frustrate election riggers in Nigeria.

When the student was younger, he had to make a pair of slippers out of a cardboard to protect his feet from the scorching soil of the farm path.

The necessity of protecting his face from the sun also made him create a baseball cap, then cars, train, grinding machines, all with the same cardboard.

Half way through his secondary education, Suraju graduated into using aluminum sheets in making not only miniature automobiles, such as fire extinguishing vans, excavators, but a large size planting machine that can be used for planting, as well.

"Anything I see, I will like to do. We went for competition. I saw some people do a motorcycle they were riding. I said I would do a planting machine in a form of a vehicle that a person can drive. I thought in our country we don't have planting machines. Farmers are suffering. Then I took iron and aluminum sheets. I first did a small one that a small boy can enter. Then I did a bigger one. I used wheelbarrow tyres, iron from metal bed, electric motor and motorcycle gearbox to make it," the teenager says.

The boy has also built a miniature boat with aluminum sheets and radio motors. Thus, it can move forward or backward when powered by dry cell batteries.

However, Suraju believes that he could do more with if he had better training and access to materials.

A power generator, introduced by the young prodigy, is powered by dry battery cells and water. He showed how to use the generator to charge a cell phone battery and the standing fan he made himself.

What is more, the boy also has the solution that will help to handle Nigeria's electoral malpractices.

The solution is a laptop-like device he fabricated which he calls "electronic voting system". He demostrated how voting is recorded on a pair of screens that look like those of small calculators. The "electronic voting system" is equipped with a central screen made of a translucent plastic with voting approval and disapproval written on either halves of it.

When he inserts a card that has voted into the voting box, the half that disapproves of voting will be lighted from within. If the one that has not voted, but registered is inserted, the half that approves of voting will be lighted.

Suraju has managed to embody several ideas of his and now plans to develop new projects for the benefit of the country.

"I want to be a mechanical engineer. I want technology to go forward in our country, Nigeria. We need to develop technology. I want to make a bigger excavator that human beings can enter, and it will be working," Suraju says.

Though he has created a miniature airplane, Suraju is confident he can built a big one that will carry people.

Suraju's maternal grandfather Malam Isa, who has raised the young talent, is proud of his grandson and always helps him with money to buy some of the things he needs.

Fynestboi: The Nigerians, who scored 18 goals in their four games heading into the quarter-final round, opened the scoring from a fabulous piece of creative interplay. Kelechi Iheanacho, scorer of five goals at these finals, laid a wonderful through ball, perfectly weighted, from deep in midfield that was latched onto by Taiwo Awoniyi. The striker made no mistake, hitting home to the back post for his second goal of the tournament.
