The guy with the usb modem
Have been very indisposed lately
Due to my experience with all these modems on linux, if it does not work out of the box in linux then its a serial usb modem.Now lets ddo it together

Step 1. Insert the card and open terminal type sudo dmesg and supply your password the it should provide lots of output but search for someething like this 0.0: ttyS0 at I/O 0x2e8 (irq = 3) is a 16C950/954. Take note of something like ttySO or Usb0 thats the mounting point of your modem

Step 2. edit /etc/wvdial.conf this way in the terminal sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf the it should provide you with a text editor with nothing or somethinng inside the copy and paste these to replace whats inside the text editor

Modem = /dev/ttyS0
Baud = 57600
SetVolume = 0
Dial-AT-OK ATDT Command =
Init1 = ATZ
FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS)
Phone = #777
Username = put your usern
Password =
New PPPD = yes
Carrier Check = no
Stupid Mode = 1

Note thats the mount point that i told you to take not of is whats you'll put in front of your modem, out your usernameand password then save and exit then type sudo wvdial from the terminal it should connect, in case it gives you any error just copy and put the error mesg so that we'll look into it. Am not so good at writing guides so bear with me

Computers / Re: Pls Hw Do I Install Xp On A Lapie Wit Vista In A New Partition by esquire(m): 9:00am On Jun 15, 2009
akenzua_II:

Three ways

Second Way,  (safer and recommended)

Slipstream using nLite,  (www.nliteos.com) or vLite (www.vlite.net)

Download special XP drivers for AHCI from your hardware manufacturer's website

Install nLite and modify the XP image file to include the AHCI drivers,  This should be straightforward, I will leave that for you to play with

nLite will create a NEW XP image file to use, burn this and use as your install

Third way,  (great for fun)

Download virtual machine managers like Virtual Box, Virtual PC 2007 or VMWare,  Google them,

The good thing about these is that you learn how an operating system operates,

Most of all ,  HAVE FUN,   smiley

Nice tutorial

Guy if your system does not have sata mode i.e where you can disable or enable sata just save ur self of all these wahala if you are i Lagos just go to the computer village and ask the ikeja software guys for WINXP DARK EDITION of course its not from microsoft a guy forgotten his name took the original M$ Xp and put some addons. But it has an option for sata which have use several time for customers it  nice.It even has widows blind and xp styler etc,

Computers / Re: How Can I Solve This Computer Printer Problem? by esquire(m): 6:58pm On May 22, 2009
Sorry bout your printer cry
In my own experience what causes paper jam are
1. Paper, people dont really suspect this cos if the paper is too thin i.e too light in thickness it causes paper jam. Some papers packet are sold for 500 naira which usually is of good quality and some are sold for 350 naira which causes paper jam.
2. Low voltage (low current).
3. Bad paper feed.
4.dirty sensor (which you said you've cleaned)

Try using a konqueror paper or try pring with may cardboard you may also re-install the device driver (i dont thik its the problem but just to erase the possibilty of being the one)

@all windows users including their brother oyb
I still repeat cos am not a man of much word and i dont rely on bloggers.
i cannot be bothered if you use linux or not even torvald care less.

I use linux and it works for me where windows falters even the cafes that i managed have almost migrated their server to linux and the results are obvious not down time and with little or no interference (set and go) having to restart and virus rigmarole, stability high nos of uptime etc with no cost and have some linux workstations among them etc.

enjoy your crap that tells you to restart at any slightest thing even after reconizing and installing a flash drive. and that you'll have the hardware of a supercomputer for you to have optimum performance which can cause you to break your bank if ever you have one, the list is endless. Truth be told its just of the piracy thats triving in Nigeria do you thing average nigerian can afford windows and addon to bring it to their desired level?

where oyb is busy flaring up at any small point made against windows it amazes me how you protect windows with so much zeal.

If anybody is a fan boy its you oyb because the zeal with which you defend windows if you divert it into solving some of numerous windows problem all most filling to the brim of this computer section but i must confess you've solve few problems in the past but try to channel some of your energy in to helping other people.
And please dont insult me or else i'll enter my computer and come fight you over there grin cheesy wink

i could not get online with mtn dailup through bluetooth after automatic configuration

With kubuntu i can vouch that dialup will work but the reverse is the case with gnome with ubuntu is actually based on unless you install tools like blueman which is awesome.

Do you use a mobile phone? if yes try connecting through a cable which i know that network manager will handle fine.

I did a pre-release order i guess it should be here by now will check post office on friday grin cheesy wink

What is u dont understand cos the last time i checked my post was written in english plus we are not even talking of applications packages here its about stability and vunerabilty of OS undecided angry

well here we go again bout this your autocad stuff undecided

Why am saying get linux is the fact that i makes you have balanced veiw of both oses and you'll not be saying some things wich are pure fuds.
You use linux or u dont use it is not my headache it just makes us to have one less windows fanboy to deal with in the house.

Open office is good word processor and its what i use everyday and it does the job and we also have abiword which is extremely lightweight so why should i miss MScrap.

@oyb
duh. windows users can do the same with dock x, and logonvista.

With third party application yes, which may further cripple the performance of a windows system with low ram eg 1gb cos not everybody has thekind of hardware you do and when i say flexibilty can you make ur system to be like gnome, kde,enlightment etc hell no, this feat i dont even need to edit my registry before theming if i have one. i can make my system to be like what i like anytime not what some corporation want me to have.

thank God you did not use abusive language on me this time around smiley smiley

what are teh exact gains i will get from using linux? will it boost my productivity in any way? will it improve the way i organize my files, navigate my computer, browse the net, play music, etal? how will it impact on my user experienec? thats what wikll determine if i consider it worth it to learn how to use it.

Here we go just like i thought you'd chicken out.

@oyb
how will it impact on my user experienec?
You can ask bigbrovar that he was once a windows power user till he saw the light.

Look lets be down with ourselves linux is more than what some blogger just write some offhandish and unsolicited reviews about, imaging a web blogger that wrote a review on ubuntu intrepid and after the conclusion he said cd/dvd burner was absent amid other programms i mean if he truely installed linux like he claimed he would that there was brasero cd/dvd burner wwith multisession capability out of the box.

@Thiefofheart
nice screenshot

Plus i can make my system look like a mac with the same sound scheme, boot screen, login screen and with variety of dock to choose from but its not worth the trouble though. This is just to show the flexibility of linux. Cheerio
Computers / Re: Are You Sick And Tired Of Windows? by esquire(m): 2:10pm On May 20, 2009
When i say get linux, i know you will not cos you are going to hide under the facade of the boss will not permit you or stuffs like that. Or that your work iss enough to keep you busy smiley
Computers / Re: Are You Sick And Tired Of Windows? by esquire(m): 2:07pm On May 20, 2009
@bigbrovar
the above lines of reasoning contradict each other. no body runs games in a proper office. and in a proper office linux is more than capable and its even cheaper to run. I work as a sysad for a school www.aust.edu.ng that runs linux on all our computer labs and office computers. we have never had a problem. MS representatives came to our school recently and even they were amazed at what we have been able to achieve with linux and open source. the average computer user don't need extreme computer games, even here in Nigeria very few people have machines with the power to run core games, for the light gamers there are enough games in linuxs to make them happy ,

God bless you brotherman

@oyb
we've had this debate before anway. when it is financially viable to code games and killer productivity applications for linux, y'all can bring on the noise

There is no application that i want to use that is not available under linux so what is the noise about

Bigbrovar talk pass you with all these over protectedness of windows na your papa get am grin wink
What we told bigbrovar then was get linux and see what am talking bout in windows i have been there done that cool

Computers / Re: Are You Sick And Tired Of Windows? by esquire(m): 6:16pm On May 19, 2009
@oyb
if i was writing a virus/spyware/adware, I'd want it to achieve maximum spread.so which OS would i choose as my medium? linux(used by 5% or less of the world) or windows(used by 98% of the world).?

in the end, windows vullnerabilities are not so much about it's being poorly coded, but about its ubiquity.

Do you mean linux that runs on 90% of the worlds server which includes google, yahoo,nasa etc is not worth checking out.
And i think hacking those servers will yield much valuable information which may fetch more money IMHO

Check out windows server and linux server both runing the same set of apache,php,mysql and check out their vunerabilities which was high on windows server than in linux server and loopholes are quickly patches in linux than in windows and the server and the desktop of linux runs the same kernel.

Linux has always been around and those writing those those virus codes see the loops hole that MS decided not to close because if do not come back to them how can they make more money.

Look it from this angle, the distructive thing linux does is that once you install it for anybody the will never come back and if you install windows for people they'll always come back for one fault or the other and lookat it from a technician point of view how will you eat if theres no fault whiich mostly stem from the OS. So MS knows what they are doing. If theres nothing like virus/spyware/keyloger/trojan/worm there will never be antivirus company so bill gate is creating job opportunities grin wink. Am glad i have linux

Computers / Re: Need Help With HP Pavilion Dv6000 Drivers by esquire(m): 1:27am On May 15, 2009
@all my people this dv6000 series na real wa ooo cry embarassed embarassed cry undecided(
But not to worry it has some problems and if tis managed effectively you'll have no problem:-]
1. the main problem of all these series is heat i.e over heating of the computer due to accumulated dust on the the fan and heat sink.
2. when the above happens which is inevitable in my own occasion because mt laptop is alway on the rug where the fan induct dusts from.
3. the most obvious effect of heat on these series are:-
i. hard disk failure (which i have suffered from) the hard drive have a definite operation temperature which i guess should be between 40 degress (good) - 60 degree (Critical) due to excessive heat which is a general symtops of dv6000 series
ii. Other problems which have seen with people having one or two of this series are laption not charging, hardisk failure, motherboard failure, screen problem etc.

what i did in my own case was that when the hard drive failed it felt like a tornado had hit me, i dismantled the laptop which is very easy and before i installed the new hard drive tht i bought i removed the fan and heatsink, i clean the fan with warm and heat sink with warm water which emmitso muxh dust. then i dust the board and i cleansed the thermal paste on the processor with alcohol anfd i put fresh paste on the processor,chipset and where the paste is suppose to be then that solves my problem.

@Dualcore,
Xp can be installed on dv6000 series with sound working, i installed a friend dv6500 intel based and uses realtek HD sound and its working fine withno problem and i have done dv5 and someof these series.

You maybe be right that people may not want the sound to work on Xp cos i myself have a dv6700 which since have downgraded to xp because of performance issue with vista cos the system has nvdia board and chipset it tends to overheat compared to the centrino countepart.
I must confess my sound has given me so many trouble before geting it to "work" which does not really work literarilly cosif you lcheck device manager it will tell its working and enabled but no sound but linux is my solace.

The performance issue am talking boils down to nvidia poor display driver used onmy laptop in the case of geforce go 7150 which leaves me with no cpu frequency scaling which make my laptop to be in the fullest performance even when idle and emmits lots of heat hence the hardware failure

My advice is after good mentainance get an hardware or computer monitor and set the minimum and maximum hardisk temperature with alarm when its getting close to the critical temp.
or get linux which has a very good cpu frequency scaling in my own case the heat persit until i scale down to 800mhz whic make the fan to spin down and the cpu to run cooler with no heat. Tjis is my own experience of the dv6000 series

My hardware:-
Amd turion64 x2
200gb harddrive (the defaunct) now 100gb
3gb ram
Atheros wireless
Nvidia geforce go 7150m
Conexant HD sound etc

My linux mint desktop with cairo-dock which i kinda like more than awn after using awn off and on for so many years now,
Got blueman just yersterday and i discoveered some things while using it
Usingg the dun for about four hours my phone battery was still the way it was and the phonee does not get hot compared to the same process in wwindows of the same machine and the same phone. i could hardly get two hours battery life with my phone under vista/Xp, bluetooth file sharing (obex ) has been brought back which has been removed and some newbie asking me that their phone cannot discover theri system but the other way round alone in the standard ubuntu and mint.
I hope cannonical can adopt and integrate blueman into ther later release instead of gnome-bluez with is not improving. cheerio

Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by esquire(m): 11:49pm On Apr 23, 2009
@nonoy
nice work its better you follow my lead or you follow Brovar baba's lead causeundecided
1. bluetooth drains phones battery faster than usb cable
2, Due to interference and network problem usb cable is the best
3. Usb cable charges your phone

Bluetooth dialup networking is possible with linux especially KDE 3 or 4 which kbluetooth is somehow better than gnome-bluetooth.
If you still insist that you must use bluetooth dialup get the following
1. gnome-bluez or so
2. gnomeppp (whixh is better than kppp IMOP)
and you're good to go.
Peace.
