@Azanor, Wine can be funny atimes and its a genius piece of reverse engineering considering the facts that micro$oft will neva release their .dll and Apis to make applications work seemlessly. But not to worry any application you want to run first check wines database of known working applications or work arounds for that particular application. In my own case i find a windo$e cds i can lay my hand on and copy out all the .dll files i can find inside and copy it to the wine's folder in my home folder whcih makes it more functional. Applications like most latest games work seemlessly, adobe products also works etc. And attimes some applications may not be listed that works like corel draw 11 have not been too listed and most people that attempted it mark it a failed and i installed it and it works not only work it is stable so good luck brotherman. |

@nonoy Good to see that you're ready and i can see you've made the neccessarry research b4 trying to install which is good. theres a partition utility in vista which allows u to shrink your patition even when have datas on it but i dont know bout windows7 it may likely have. And you can try partition magic which is good. |

ObaMan: If you're using linux as that is very easy with Gparted with allows you to delete the file system of the flash and also allow you to use other file system such as ext3 or ext2 on the flash which will restore back your flash. @subcareer Nice tutorial but this long and geek stuff will scare a chronic noob, but to me its just the best way thru. OR As subcareer said earlier install windows first then get tools like partition magic and shrink your hardisk to assuming you want 20gb for linux out of the 100gb then shrink your drive to bring out that 20gb you want and leave it raw and boot from linux and lunch the installer and choose use largest continuous free space voila thats it. There are other method . Good luck @subcareer Long time |

I have enough of kungfu with wine to make a software to work na all the .dll files i get from Windoze cds i copied into wine system32 folder the one from media center, SP1 and SP2. The problem started like this i thought i did something to it there is this new ubuntu cconvert that has a taste of browsing in ubuntu like amarok, songbird, banshee and media screenlets and weather, rss feed etc, trust me, i showed the guy effisy, Allah the guy dissed vista for ubuntu and the wine sheet happened just after three days in heaven for the guy I thought i did something but its just wine wahala i had to purge wine config and reinstall everyday before using but belive me thats still better compare to the pain of being stuck with m$ Windoze. But now its very stable thanks to over 500 .dll files pidgeon does not support proxy? so i downloaded Kopete but i noticed its the same problem and right now am compiling empathy wil ley y'all know how it goes. Does anyone knows an IM that support proxy Cheerio |

Since i can't see the pc and the syymptoms this is what you'll do concerning the dial up configuration page otherwise know as internet option in winxp it may be due to virus or worm attack, scan your pc with a good and latest version of antivirus like kaspersky, nod32 or avg8.2 and if you are sure your system is not infected with a virus then boot from a winxp cd after loading you'll see the normal page of winxp setup you''ll press enter to setup winxp press R to repair them press the R and you'll see a console asking you which partition you want to log on press 1 then enter your password if you have one and if not just press enter and type CHKDSK /P. let there be space between the chkdsk and the /p. If that does not fix it reformat you PC And Concerning the sparodic rebooting it may be due to the thermal sensor getting the wrong signal from the processor that its overheating ask your tecnician toputa fresh thermal paste of the processor its always whitesih in colour. Concerning the DVD are you sure your PC comes witha DVD rom? Otherwise it will not play dvd. Am in Sango in Ogun State, had it been you are in Lagos if i would have help you fix it FOC Let me how it all gos . good luck |

Bigbrovar thanks for the contribution o jare. Am am currently using a gsm to browse if u know what i mean. I connected through wine the latest interpid version it did well but due to some wierd reason it reason it refuse to connect again and theres this guy i installed mint for that same wierd stuff happened. But yersterday night with stephen i boot from live cd and guess what it browsed. am currently plannign of reloading my system just to eradicate the problem ccos as am currently typing am using that MCE you game me and its killing me. I notice that Mozilla firefox of the same version, the same connection medium in ubuntu is very fast than the one in windows even with livecd its blazing fast. I also noticed that firefox in vista is somewhat problematic or maybe MS dont want it to perform better than IE7. . @fluche Wellcome to absolute freedom and am happy for your liberation from the shackles of M$ and if you are a gamer dont forget to check linuxgames.com, games.linux.sk and also check www.winehq.com for a whole list of commercial application and game that can be run on linux through wine and there a whole lots of commercial applications that have linux alternative which are always of better quality |

it's not correct to say so that Ubuntu linux can not be partitioned to work alongside with Windows vista. My system is partitioned and it has been working perfectly well - EXCELLENTLY WELL. [/quote] Theres hardly any version of linux thats not compactible with a centrino This is your first installation right? gotten it right this time does not mean its all rosy have had my fair share of dv6700 if you catch my drift. Like in dv6000 series with 8.10 you must not restart from vista you have to shutdown proper before oning it and boot directly from cd or else on getting to the partioner in ubuntu you'll not see any hardisk 1.e your hardrive will not be configured/recongnise from startup Enjoy ubuntu. @flyuche Dont try to partition your drive from ubuntu with vista. i have tried it several times and its often problematic i dont know maybe thats one of the update included in vista sp1 just to frustrate the effort of user to stick to their OS alone. But try it this way and it has worked always for me on vista. Go to Control Panel - Admistrative tools - computer management - Disk management. etc i dont know the exact but try to locate since i dont have vista on my pc now. and resize your hardrive from there to your desired size then boot ubuntu and when it comes to partitioning choose use the largest free space. I have tried it this way about 6 times when installing for people with vista. may ubuntu be with you all. Cheerio |

The guys thats wanting to install linux should do so on a sepate and dedicated partition because thats how it you can enjoy it best not on some virtual machine. Plus post the names of your hardware like your motherboard, processor, vga etc. In the min time try this boot from live cd after choosing your language then scroll to try without installing and press F6 on your keyboard and you'll see where you can type in then type this noapic nolapic and press enter and lets know how it goes. Cheerio @Bigbrovar Linux mint felicia is highly unstable on my laptop so i resolve to using the ordinary intrepid and am enjoying for the main time i can get fast internet to update cos you know kernel 2.6.27 is experimental at the time of intrepid release. Peace out. Am currently browsing. |

Howdy everybody, i will advise everybody to be patient and the noobs should not expect the geeks to perform miracles for them. Truely speaking if you're online count your self lucky and get down with google and lots of communities outthere. don't fold your hand and expect people to help you help your selfs. When i started with redhat 9 i have no regular internet even now buti tried to solve my proplems before turning to online resouces. Got dv6700 sometimes last year AMD64, ATHEROS WIFI, NVIDIA GPU and i saw hell but today am smiling because windows is not an issue for me. Bottom line theres always a ready solution with you waiting for ever for service packs NOTE: for those you installed or wanting to install ubuntu with the kernel 2.6.27 on HP or COMPAQ if you're dual booting with vista don't restart shutdown propely from vista then on it then proceed to boot fro live cd live cd if you did not press any key the progress bar will not move, just do it like that till you boot to windows and install normally then boot ubuntu for the first time and repeat the pressing of any key on the keyboard then edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and look for quite slash and append acpi=noirq at the front to look like this quiet splash acpi=noirq. Sorryam not good in writing and i hope it helps anybody with that problem. Cheerio The guy that has Atheros wifi and uses linux mint the atheros wifi is included check /usr/lib/mintwifi/wifidriver or so i cant remember but i will check and post it and if youcan locate it yourself just navigate from the windows wireless driver application and you'll see one textfile that ends with inf and click install but i will check and see cause am browsing from my school cafe. Cheerio |

This is the only place i ever feel at home (linux thread) and this is really looking up in the linux world and truely i cannot find anything better to use rigth now am having a desktop system that use to be my linux box but now have installed windoze XP on it cuz its for sale i barely even touch except for playing songs and i get annoy everytime cos WM player cannot remember the last songs you played even with a playlist you'll have to load your playlist everytime you want to play music unlike all linux music players just point the location where the song is and thats all. All tired of the talk that i can do this on windows and i can't do it on linux Here are few of what you can do on linux that you cannot do on windo$e http://dmartin.org/weblog/things-i-can-do-in-linux-that-i-cant-do-on-windows I hope you linux gurus in the house can add to the list cheerio |

OYB or whats your name have just gotten the chance to get back at ya. I will ignore all your abusive and derogatory statements bout me. You sound to me as a frustrated fellow who has spent much on ram and stuffs and not getting the results. . Sorry. And this will be the last time i will trade war of words with you. About CAD stuffs i have used QCAD on linux on more than one occassion its nice and can compete favourably with autocad. Linux is it man msn server runs on linux and there are more that i can continue to be mentioning and am sure you have ur google hardly any distro have not tried am what you can call Distro LovePeddler and since edgy hav e settle down with ubuntu. OYB, seriously to be fair, you are a power user on windows and in defending windoze u are not as zealous as Bigbrovar and what is using today am not saying u should use anything other that what u using now, but pick up ubuntu 8.04 cd it install temporarily in windoze, check it out and thats when you have a (little cos ubuntu (linux) works better on a dedicated partition of its own) veiw of the two OSES. Goodluck Brume I want to get a laptop very soon here is my nos 08028862963 text me ur nos so i will call u and we'll talk business. |

Sorry o Mr. Bill gate, I dont know you mean by commercial or professional application that you are talking, I work with computer everyday including the CAD software you're talking about which are numerous under linux and am sure will give autocad a run for its money. My systems gives me the balance between productivity and cool look which i know y'all windoze users is dying to have Can't you read anymore the 384MB i quoted there is the minimum requirement to run ubuntu and very funny just because your system is gulping you ram and another person is using system with low ram that works better than yours you've now considered him cheap? With this your so called Autocad and sure with just 512mb of ram under XP it will perform well cause have installed autocad 2007 into a pentuim 3 800mhz with the above ram and i performs well. Try to make ur research well, is it linux that does not support third party application or its those company that does not support linux? Look am not here to brag or argue cos i dont do it my work and my capabilities speaks for me ask Brovar and the likes. Cheerio |
Computers / Re: Windows Vista - The Return by esquire(m): 4:26pm On May 17, 2008 |
OYB based on my previous experiences, i resolved that i require the following 1) the biggest hard drive i can get 2) an extra 1 gb of ram bring my system to 3gb. 3) a readyboost compatible memory card (4gb) Men na problem oooo are u running a super computer? I mean seriously. just because u running the so called new technology in an operating system u have to spend money on those hardware and you are still happy bout it. And if its linux people will say i told you they are not ready for the desktop yet and yet you still see all this flaws as normal? Very funny I can run Ubuntu 8.04 with much more visual effects (compiz or Beryl) and heavily tweaked with just 384MB of RAM with out stress or draginess. Thank God am free and i hope you too will be one day. Cheerio |
