Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said that he does not need to seek the consent of the President Goodluck Jonathan to contest for the chairmanship position of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF). Amaechi stated this while fielding questions from Shaun Ley on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hard Talk programme monitored in Abuja, yesterday. “Nobody told me not to run. My assumption is that you the journalists in Britain have an association. Would the Prime Minister tell you to run or not to run for a public office? That is the kind of freedom we are looking for in NGF. So I didn’t need to go to the president and say, Mr President, I want to run for the office of the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum. I didn’t need to do that and I didn’t do that. And he, in-turn, did not come tell me that, I heard you want to run. So I ran and I didn’t swing the ballot; the person who swapped the ballot is Jonah Jang…I didn’t say I beat him, the result was clear,” he stated. On his much talked about ambition to run for the office of the vice president on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he explained: “Let’s work on the assumption that I remain in PDP and let’s also assume work on the assumption that I’m running for the office of the vice president, will my leaving PDP not be an answer to your assumption? Let’s assume the president wants to run in PDP and I remain in PDP that means I have no ambition or those that are assuming I have an ambition will be making a lot of mistakes because the place to pursue that ambition will be in an alternative party. But the reason for being in PDP is because nobody can chase me out of PDP. - See more at: http://leadership.ng/news/260713/i-don-t-need-president-s-consent-run-office-amaechi

Yobe State Governor Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, Tuesday, refused to grant audience to the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, following the minister’s rally with the recently released Major Hamza Al-Mustapha in Nguru last week. The minister was in Damaturu to give the state government 222 trailer loads of grains and N150 million being the Federal Government’s assistance to Yobe as one of the three states affected by emergency rule. But the governor, who was at the Government House but refused to see the minister, was, according to an aide who does not want his name in print, annoyed that the minister drove in the same car with Al-Mustapha to the Nguru rally despite the emergecy rule in the state. All efforts to speak to the governor’s media aide was futile as our reporter’s calls were unanswered. A text message sent to the aide was not also acknowledged by the time of going to press. Meanwhile, the federal government’s ‘largesse’ was a source of controversy as the state deputy governor, Engr Danlami Ali, who hosted the minister, claimed he was mystified over claims by the minister that he “personally sourced N200 million from individuals and organisations to transport the grains to Damaturu.” Engr Ali said that he was “baffled”, and hinted that the federal government’s business must be some sort of “mixed grill” if individuals could “donate to transport a federal government assistance” or that it should be “shared by NGOs” as hinted by the minister. - See more at: http://leadership.ng/news/260713/yobe-governor-shuns-minister-over-al-mustapha-rally |

OLA AJAYI, IBADAN Hundreds of residents of Ibadan, Tuesday, rushed out to catch a glimpse of a strange fish which was said to have human parts at Asaka compound area of the city. The incident happened at Ile Akindele when a fish seller noticed the strange creature after removing the wrap of a frozen fish. Ramota, who was said to be the fish seller reportedly, raised alarm to attract others to the strange sight. She said, “I went to where we usually buy fish at Kola Eleja, Oke Ado, Ibadan. After I finished, I boarded Okada to my place to prepare the fish for sale. Before getting the fish out of the ice-pack, we needed to use knife to remove them and use water to de-freeze. I was shocked to see the frozen fish developed into a living being in the water, the description of which showed half human and half fish. I quickly called my father and some Alfas to see the strange fish”. The father of the woman, a retired civil servant, Pa Rauf Salawu who corroborated the story said he had never seen such a thing before. He narrated his own side of the story saying, “it was around 11am, when I started hearing the voice of my daughter while I was resting on my bed. She was shouting and screaming to the extent that people in the compound were attracted. Then, I decided to check what was the problem. I took along my Quran and on getting there, my daughter had gone to call another Muslim leader in the neighbourhood. I saw the strange fish inside water in the bucket . It was strange, how can a fish bought in the cold room develop into human. That I cannot fully explain.” Due to the crowd, police men from Mapo police station were there to control the crowd. The fish seller was then taken into the custody of the police. Several calls made to the police were not picked. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/strange-fish-causes-stir-in-ibadan/#sthash.ppro1PoM.O5IFN9jq.dpuf |
