EntertainmentCheck Out Photos From The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest by Etumgbe(op): 5:49pm On Jun 24, 2013
On June 21, 2013, the World’s Ugliest Dog contest was held in Petaluma, California.

The winner was Walle, a 4-year-old mutt from Chico, California, who a judge described as looking “like he’s been photo-shopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals.”

Owner Tammie Barbee got the dog when he was three months old.

“People come up to me and say that dog is not right,” Barbee said, “but I love him.”

Judges said they were especially impressed by Walle’s bizarre waddle of a walk. Walle wins $1,500 and will make several network TV appearances next week, including NBC’s “Today” show and ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

PoliticsLagos Speaker, Ikuforiji Re-arraigned by Etumgbe(op): 5:36pm On Jun 24, 2013
Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, and his Personal Assistant, Oyebode Alade Atoyebi were Monday re-arrianged on a 54-count criminal charge bordering on money laundering.

The re-arraignment was sequel to the retirement of the former judge, Justice Okechukwu Okeke, who was presiding over the case.

In lieu of the retirement of the judge, the case was re-assigned to Justice Ibrahim Buba.

Consequently, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, prosecuting counsel, Chief Godwin Obla amended the former 20-count charge and substituted it with a 54-count charge.

In the new charge, the accused speaker and his personnal assistant were alleged to have transacted business to the tune of N518 million without going through any financial institution between 2010 and 2011, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Money Laundering Act.

The Speaker and his aide pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Their lawyer, Mr. Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, leading two other senior lawyers, Tunde Akinrinmisi and Abiodun Onidare, told the court that they were cautious not to file application for bail because the accused persons were already on bail.

But the presiding judge, Justice Buba, said that he is not bound to the previous bail and therefore asked Oyetibo to move an application for bail.

Oyetibo said the speaker was on bail on self recognition, while the Clerk of Lagos State House of Assembly stood as surety for the second accused person.

In his reaction, Chief Obla said he is not opposing the bail application, but that what he is after is that the trial of the case should continue, therefore, leaving the issue of the bail to the discretion of the court.

In his ruling for the application for bail, Justice Buba granted them bail in the sum of N5 billion with two sureties in like sum.

The two sureties must file affidavit of means while the accused must sign an undertaking of coming to court regularly.

The bail condition must be perfected before 48 hours and the two accused will not be remanded in prison custody.

However, failure to perfect bail conditions before 48 hours will attract a bench warrant being issued against them.

However, Onidare and Akinrinmisi urged the court to vary the bail conditions.

In acceding to their request, Justice Buba reduced the bail from N5 billion to N1 billion.

Thereafter, the case was adjourned till 25 September for trial to commence.

SportsChristian Chukwu - "Super Eagles Are Inexperienced" by Etumgbe(op): 9:55am On Jun 24, 2013
Former Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu has submitted that the Super Eagles were unable to progress at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil due to inexperience of some of the players.

The team crashed out of the eight-team tournament on Sunday after just winning one match from three. Their opening group game against Tahiti ended 6-1 in their favour, but lost to Uruguay (2-1) and Spain (3-0) to exit from the tournament.

Chukwu, who led the national team to win the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980, said the strikers missed many scoring chances in the three games due to their inexperience, but praised coach Stephen Keshi for giving the players the opportunity to play at the big stage.

He said, “People keep saying we missed strikers like Obafemi Martins and Osaze Odemwingie, but that is not the issue. When these players were there and did not play to our satisfaction, we clamoured for other players to be included. What is missing in this team is experience. We should not forget that key players like Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike were not available for this tournament.

“If this crop of players continues to play at the big stage just as they did at the Confederations Cup, they’ll gradually acquire what is needed to win games at the top level.”

He added, “The results (in Brazil) are not encouraging but Keshi deserves credit for giving the players the chance to play at the top level.

“One of the lessons learnt from the Confederations Cup will be on how to fortify the team ahead of their last World Cup qualifier against Malawi and the subsequent preparation of the team for the World Cup.

“It is better we fail and learn at this level than to disgrace ourselves at the World Cup next year. The purpose of this competition is to assess the team’s strength, and we have seen our weaknesses.”

CrimeSee What A Father Did To His 13 Months Old Daughter by Etumgbe(op): 8:04pm On Jun 21, 2013
The father of the little girl said he flogged her with the cord of his handset charger because she was disturbing him from watching TV. The mother thinks the marks on her daughter’s back were for ritual purposes. But let’s even accept he only flogged her; how can you flog a 1 year old like this?  Read the full story from Vanguard below…

Vanguard Metro, gathered that Huwaila Abdulahi, 22, who has been separated from her husband, is asking the Commission to investigate and unravel the mystery behind the strange marks all over the back of her 14 months old daughter. Although the estranged housewife is not seeking for a divorce, she is demanding for justice for her innocent baby as the 14 marks were not there when the father sent one Ibrahim to bring the little girl to spend some time with him.

The man, identified as Ibrahim Haladu, is being accused of carrying out a ritual on his child. He has been invited by the Commission to explain the strange marks on his daughter’s back. But he is insisting  that he only flogged his daughter with the cord of his handset charger. He denied that the marks were for ritual purposes.

In spite of his statement, many people who saw the strange marks on the child were not convinced of his testimony as they  believed they were carefully incised.

In his account of the incident, Ibrahim said: “I was watching an Arab channel but she would not let me be with her cries. I was enjoying the programme, but her cries kept distracting me. I was provoked so I brought out my charger phone wire and flogged her. My first wife Aisha who heard her cries came out and was shouting at me to stop. She was even angry and rebuked me for beating her like that. I regret my action.

The marks on my daughter’s body is not  for ritual purposes as wrongly insinuated by some people. I can never use my child for ritual. It is unfortunate that my wife had to drag me to the Sharia Commission because she has a grouse against me. We have been having problems with her, but that is between us. Why should I go to the extent of using my child for ritual? I only beat her as a father. I don’t belong to any cult or secret society”.

Some residents of the Tirwun, a suburb of Bauchi, where Ibrahim allegedly carried out the beating  of his baby were left in shock on seeing Sahura with the 14 strange marks on her back. They called for thorough investigation into the case so as to unravel the motive behind his action.

Ibrahim moved to his house in Tirwin with his first wife, Aisha leaving his second wife, Huweila with his parents. Hajiya Huwaila told VM that  her husband occasionally comes to pick Sahura to spend some time with him since they were not living together. According to her: “My husband, his first wife and I lived with his parents at Bakin Kura before he moved with his first wife to Tirwun, leaving me and my daughter Sahura behind.

But he occasionally comes to take the baby to spend some time with him in his new place and bring her back. One day he sent one Ibrahim to come and bring Sahura; this was around one in the afternoon. But when they brought back my daughter, I noticed something unusual about her because she kept crying and I wondered what was wrong with her.

When I checked her body, I saw some strange marks all over her back”. Huwaila said she quickly rushed to the Bauchi State Shari’ah Commission to lodge a complaint after she confronted her husband who claimed he only flogged Sahura because she was disturbing him with her cries.

The permanent Commissioner II of the State Shari’ah Commission, Jibril Hassan, confirmed that Huwaila lodged a complaint prompting the commission to summon the husband. Hassan added  that the commission was investigating the issue and would charge the father of the girl to court at the appropriate time. He also said that if found guilty of the accusations leveled against him, the accused would be charged to court.

PoliticsOnoh's Family Battles Governor Chime Over Father's Property by Etumgbe(op): 6:21pm On Jun 21, 2013
The Enugu State Capital Development Authority, ECTDA, has pulled down a property located at Onoh quarters in Old GRA Enugu, belonging to Dr. Josef Umunnakwe Onoh, son of former Governor of Old Anambra state, Late Chief C. C Onoh. The commissioner for ECTDA, Engr. Iyke Ugwegede, said the building was pulled down because the fence and security house rested on a public road and obstructed the liberty of residents. However, owner of the property and Chairman of karastan Nigeria limited, Dr. Josef Onoh has countered the claim by ECTDA and insisted that the demolished property met all due process of documentation. He alleged that Engr. Ugwegede was propelled by personal vendetta over their unfinished personal business to demolish his property.

Onoh brandished several documents authenticating his structure and said that what happened was that he refused to sell more plots of land located within the area to Commissioner Ugwegede and he in turn unleashed vendetta on his property. Onoh provided Cheques of previous personal transactions between him and Ugwegede and insisted that what the Commissioner did on his property was an act of abuse of office and blackmail on him. He demanded for immediate sack of the Commissioner by Governor Sullivan Chime to serve as reprimand for other public officers who may want to engage in conflict of interests using their positions. Reacting to the claims, the Commissioner said that the ECTDA was only an enforcement agency that executed the order of the state Ministry of Lands which he said initially certified Onoh’s property, but turned around to withdraw the certification.

CrimeMan Calls In Three Friends To Rape "Love Of His Life", Security Man Joins In by Etumgbe(op): 1:50pm On Jun 20, 2013
An ND 1 student of a private polytechnic in Ekiti State was raped by five men including a man who had expressed his unending love for her.

The boy called his friends and together they tied her hands and legs. Each of them got his turn to rape her.

The school’s Chief Security Officer directed a security man to take the student to the police to record a statement. The ND 1 student claims that the security man-who has only been identified as Adanbioje-took her to his house and he too raped her.

Adanbioje however refutes those claims saying the student asked that she spends the night at his place out of fear that the four men who had raped her might return for more.

All the five suspects have been arrested as investigations continue.

The Police PRO, Victor Babayemi, paraded the suspects saying police investigations had shown that rape cases in that institution had become rampant. He gave an assurance that the suspects would be prosecuted.

PoliticsKidnapped 82-yr-old Man Buried Alive In “evil Forest” by Etumgbe(op): 12:31pm On Jun 20, 2013
BY GABRIEL ENOGHOLASE
BENIN— THE remains of an 82-year-old retired Inspector of Police, Elder Samuel Ekhoruyimen, who was allegedly abducted by some youths of Ewudu village in Ovia North- East Local Government Area of Edo State have been discovered in an ‘eveil forest’ near the village.

However, his remains suggest that he was buried alive in a grave dug before his abduction.

Pa Ekhoruyimwen who was the village head (Odionwere) of Oghobaghase near Ewudu community was said to have been invited to preside over the settlement of a dispute in his domain when he was allegedly waylaid and abducted by some youths of Ewudu village.

Vanguard gathered that following the octogenarian’s sudden disappearance on May 10, 2013, his children living in Benin informed the Police who declared him missing after 24 hours of futile efforts by the family to ascertain his whereabouts.

Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Zone 5, Alhaji Hashimu Argungun, while speaking on the issue, disclosed that following intelligence reports, undercover agents led by one Sergeant Isaiah Osivwemu arrested one Osamudiamwen Uwaila of Ewudu community.

The AIG who spoke through the Deputy Police Commissioner in charge of Administration, Mr. Dave Akinremi, revealed that the confessional statement of the prime suspect led to the arrest of seven others, including the Chief Priest of the Ovia deity in Ewudu community, Pa Stephen Oviawe, 78.

He added that two village heads and two youths were also arrested in connection with the gruesome murder.

Efforts to recover the corpse

Meanwhile, the police boss said efforts to recover the corpse of the former Police Inspector have been intensified, saying other suspects now at large went to remove the remains from the grave before policemen were led there by one of the suspects.

The prime suspect, Osamudiamwen Uwaila, speaking with newsmen at the Adesuwa Police Station, yesterday, disclosed that he connived with others now at large, captured the victim on the way to his village and took him to an already dug grave in the evil forest of Ewudu community.

He added that they plotted to kill the victim because of his alleged role in a land dispute between Ewudu an d Orogun communities some years ago.

Vanguard learnt that after the arrest of some of the suspects who took the police to where the retired police officer was buried, it was discovered that the body had been exhumed and reburied in a yet to be identified grave in the Ovia forest.

It was learnt that the deceased may have been killed for ritual purpose. However, one of the suspects (name withheld) while confessing to the crime to the police, disclosed that they decided to re-bury the victim’s corpse because they found out that the body was buried close to the road, therefore they had to exhume to rebury so as to ensure that the body was not found by the police.

PoliticsPolice Declare Ex-deputy Gov Wanted For Fraud by Etumgbe(op): 8:39am On Jun 20, 2013
The Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police has declared a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, wanted for allegedly defrauding a land buyer of N130m.

The SFU alleged in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect and her son, Samson, obtained money from the victim by false representation.

The Commissioner of Police for the command, Tunde Ogunsakin, said, “The victim alleged that in September 2011, the suspects conspired and sold a parcel of land at Plot 24 Block 4 situated at Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos for N130m which he paid into the first suspect’s account with the Union Bank of Nigeria Plc.

“He further stated that after payment, he requested title document and Alhaja Ojikutu procured an affidavit of support to back her fraudulent claim, a police crime extract and a publication in a newspaper all purporting to loss of the original documents of title to the land. The victim believed her because of her personality as the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State.

“The bubble burst when the victim commenced development of the land and was on the verge of completion when the bona fide owner of the land surfaced and indeed it was discovered that the land the suspect sold did not belong to her. She actually sold Plot 23 Block 4 while Plot 24 Block 4 already has a property on it.”

According to police investigation, the land Ojikutu sold, did not belong to her, but to one Mr. Afolabi. It was also discovered that the Plot 24 Block 4, which actually belonged to Alhaja Ojikutu’s late husband, Samson Ojikutu (senior), was sold by him in 1995 and the suspect was a life witness and appended her signature to the sale of the land.

Ogunsakin said the suspect further perpetrated the crime by alleging that the original Certificate of Occupancy to the property was missing and swore an affidavit which enabled her to obtain a police report and memorandum of loss. She also put up an advert in newspapers that the original C of O was lost, whereas the original C of O was with the Hallmark Homes, the buyer of the property.

He said, “The suspect, who is a 67-year-old retiree from Lagos Island, allegedly connived with her son, Samson, who is currently in the United States to commit the fraud. The suspect and her son were parties to the sale of the land and both signed the agreement given to the complainant and obtained the sum of N130m from him.

“She admitted committing the crime but confessed that it was a genuine mistake of plot identification. She refunded the sum of N50m to the complainant and promised to refund the balance as soon as she disposed of her two properties she put up for sale. She also confessed that she had invested the victim’s money in her business.

“She equally made an undertaking and payment plan which was drawn from September, 2012 and was to terminate by November 2012, but she defaulted.”

Ogunsakin stated that the suspect was not willing to abide by the terms of payment and had jumped bail. He added that all attempts to contact her had proved abortive.

“The SFU declares Alhaja Ojikutu wanted. Anybody with useful information regarding her whereabouts should report to the Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, 13 Milverton Road, Ikoyi,” he said.

PoliticsJonathan Drags Tambuwal Before Journalists by Etumgbe(op): 11:57am On Jun 19, 2013
“Why are you hiding?” the president asked the speaker.

A mild drama occurred at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Tuesday night as President Goodluck Jonathan dragged the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, before television cameras, shortly before the commencement of the closed-door meeting of the National Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The president’s action seemed an attempt to show journalists that Mr. Tambuwal was still a member of the PDP despite recent reports of his closeness to opposition leaders and his rumoured presidential ambition.

The speaker had boycotted major events organised by the presidency and his party including the second year anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan administration and presentation of a mid-term report by the president.

He also recently condemned the leadership of the ruling party for the suspension of Sokoto Governor, Aliyu Wamakko. The suspension was later reversed.

Mr. Jonathan was walking alongside the Vice President, Namadi Sambo; Secretary to Government of the Federation, Pius Ayim; National Chairman of the Party, Bamanga Tukur; and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Tony Anenih; when they were confronted by an array of cameras.

Perhaps realising that the Speaker was trying to avoid the cameras, Mr. Jonathan teased him, saying, “Why are you hiding? They want to see your face.”

The speaker also responded in a jocular manner.

“I am not hiding. I am your property,” he said, as they proceeded to the venue of the meeting which started at about 9.00 p.m.

The meeting is expected to discuss the ongoing crisis within the ruling PDP, including the expected exit of some members of the party’s National Working Committee; as well as the National Executive Committee meeting of the party scheduled for Thursday.

CelebritiesTop Nollywood Lésbians Of All Times by Etumgbe(op): 5:52pm On Jun 18, 2013
The issue of lésbianism in Nollywood has been leaving tongues wagging for a while now.

According to a story by a Nigeriafilms.com reporter, they have been able to exclusively reveal Nollywood’s lésbians of all times till date.

Read the report below;

I got talking with an actress whose mission is to expose this rot which she a claim has eaten very deep in the industry.

‘This is not the movie industry of our dreams, I didn’t envisage things will be this bad in Nollywood, for producers especially females to give movie roles to some group of actresses just because they are lésbian partners? God forbid!’

Those were the exact words of the actress whose identity I will simply leave as anonymous. What does this imply you may ask? Well, I guess you should patiently read this piece to get yourself well informed on the latest séxual pervert that has dominated the world’s third largest film producing platform called Nollywood.

As you read, open your discerning so as to get the gist properly, some revelations you derive here, you may not have ever heard before and would shock you. Read on…

Talking about lésbianism in Nigeria, there is someone, whose name you cannot cast away. This is simply because she sounds like a ‘song’ and just like the songbird, when she sings every other birds keep their cool. She is chubby; dark skinned and is termed the mother of lésbians in Nollywood.

With connections here and there, she prefers the company of young pretty ladies who satisfies her undying séxually perverted desire. Although she has an only child, but in all sincerity, love hasn’t been kind to her. A close friend of hers once told me that she resorted to this shameful demonic act after suffering several heartbreaks from men.

Today she runs one of the most successful lésbian empires in Nigeria, with some of her cohorts being fixed in strategic positions with more and more young girls on the cue wanting to tap into her ‘current’.

Bréast bare on the other hand, in the words of a popular magazine that shares the same name with her, the next person you are reading about is pretty, yes very pretty, blessed with a beautiful shape, body and skin that glows. She appears ageless all the time but already in her early thirties.

She is however one of the most prominent lésbians of all times alongside a national honour… Despite her age, I also have it on good authority that she may not be giving marriage any trial, because like they say in Pidgin English, Wetin you dey find for Sokoto, dey inside your Shokoto. The actress and mother of one has a PA whose first name begins with the seventh alphabet, with whom she goes down low.

The all seeing eyes also whispered into my ears that they live together in her Lekki mansion, and her so-called PA is an integral part of her life, such that she calls the shots in most cases, infact, like it was said, whoever wants see madam would have to work very hard to please her first, otherwise, you are on your own.

Findings also revealed that the boxed up actress who have endorsed several brands in Nigeria and Abroad, also pays beautiful young girls huge amount of money in order to have carnal knowledge of them. Recently she allegedly approached a female musician who was at some time rumoured to also enjoy the thing a lot, promising her heaven and earth…I will still find out if she agreed or not, but not today.

Just in case you think it’s finished, then I will kindly advise that you read on, because the next person is a Nigerian whose looks and skin colour resembles those from the ‘Dominican Republic’. In fact, she is as well very pretty, fair skinned and petit.

This person operates on a different level; she takes so much Apeteshi and smokes the hell out of cigarette and at the same time enjoys the woman-to-woman affair.

Her career once suffered setback at the emergence of some new generation talents but shortly after, she started regaining her place, after being introduced to the lésbian club. She doesn’t play only local leagues, but also international.

I was informed that most of her lésbian partners hail from Cameroun and Kenya which explains why she frequently travels to these countries. She is also in her late 30s but is also not considering settling down any time soon.

One thing also need to know about these lésbians is that except for some who have probably given love a trial (I mean falling in love with an opposite séx), their desire for the cu*t does not in any way debar them from getting married if the opportunity arises.

The reason for mentioning this is that the next person you are about to read about now, is a newlywed. She studied Theatre arts, tried her hands in acting sometime in the past before going into restaurant business thereafter.

However her second return which was situated by one of her older colleague who hails from the same state with her and also belongs to the top lésbian club was explosive. She is presently the toast of toast top movie producers due to her versatility and good delivery of movie scripts. Shortly after her return to the industry, her colleague turned bedmate gave her lead roles in some of her personally sponsored movies and the rest they say is history.

However in the words of Achebe of blessed memories, years after, Things fell apart between them and everyone went their separate ways. Due to frustration, she once squatted with some of her lésbian colleagues in Lekki before being thrown out. Eventually she got her groove and rented a personal apartment in the same area, where we were told she had almost an overdose of that thing…and along the line, met her husband and shortly after they settled down.

It cannot be overly emphasized that there is power in the names we bear. This next person hails from the South Southern part of Nigeria. And like her surname implies in Igbo language, she is truly a warrior. Shamelessly in love with controversy, rascally, consumes cigarette like it’s going out of fashion, but this act of séxual perversion has eaten so deep in her system than many ever imagined.

According to the all seeing eyes, she is a bi-séxual and cannot do without séx whenever she is high on Indian hemp or skunk. According to findings, the product of a famous reality show in Nigeria is ready to grab the bóobs of the girl next to her whenever she smokes and there is no man to do justice to her séxual desire and before you know it, one or two things will happen.

She allegedly has a good number of her industry colleagues as bed mates and recently got serious bashing from pundits for towing a particular line which some of her predecessors went through without success.

At this juncture, let me tell you the story of another chronic lésbian who have taken a center stage in Nollywood. She is simply ‘Eucharistic’. She is fair skinned with an intimidating body structure; once upon a time the gist was that she is a nymphomaniac, which makes her insatiable with séx.

Once married but divorced with a male child as the product of her failed marriage. Her own case in extraordinary. I was told by the all seeing eyes that her insatiable quest for séx led her into the demonic act.

The all seeing eyes also squealed into my ears that she once told a bed mate that a man’s di**k can’t satisfy her, which explains why she sometimes applies the vibrator with the blend of another female who will súck her underneath while she routes for the climax. She’s currently treading the religious part and was recently honoured in a new generation church.

That however did not stop the South Eastern born actress who claims she might be giving marriage another shot soon. Lie they say, ‘the mother hen knows its chicken’ God knows those who worship him, even by their names.

Funny enough, the list of Nollywood lésbians of all times is almost endless, and we plan to keep up with the listing, but will be drawing the curtain here for this week.

CrimeHow I Escaped From Suspected Ritualist – Woman by Etumgbe(op): 11:21am On Jun 18, 2013
BY BARTHOLOMEW MADUKWE
LAGOS — A 30-year-old woman, Precious Adebayo, yesterday, narrated how she escaped from a suspected ritualist, Taiwo Balogun, who disguised as a commercial bus driver.

Precious told Vanguard that at about 8 p.m. on June 5, 2013, she boarded a commercial bus at Iyana Orile bus stop in Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, LCDA.

According to her, “it was raining at the time. The bus driver (Balogun) was alone in the bus when I flagged him down and told him I was going to Iyana Ipaja.

“He stopped, picked me and sped off. On getting to Mobil petrol station on Old Ipaja road, just before the Lagos State exams board office, beside NYSC camp, he told me that because of the heavy traffic at the Iyana Ipaja under bridge, he wanted to go through some inner streets through Orile Agege LCDA office at Arigbanla. He said he would come out close to Iyana Ipaja through Aboru junction and I agreed.”

Precious said she became apprehensive when it took the driver several minutes navigating through inner streets without emerging anywhere.

According to her, “I complained that I was afraid as I no longer understood where we were and where the driver was heading to. I, therefore, told him to drop me so that I could find my way out to Iyana Ipaja bus stop.

“But he reassured me that we would soon emerge at the expressway where I will disembark. Shortly after this, the driver suddenly stopped in a dark corner and told me that he wanted to pick up something.

“He then came down, entered the vehicle from behind and grabbed me on the throat in a bid to choke me. I struggled to free myself but he held me tightly. He hit my face, head and nose with a wheel spanner and inflicted grievous injuries on my face and head.”

Precious said the suspected ritualist attempted to slit her throat and cut off her breast, saying: “He used knife in trying to cut my neck but did not succeed. He even tried to cut my breast, but God rescued me. This happened at Canal, near Pleasure, after Sawmill.”

Vanguard gathered that luck ran out on the suspect when his vehicle failed to start. And within that time Precious regained some strength, pushed open the bus door and screamed for help, which attracted people in the neighbourhood. When the driver noticed that people were coming towards them, he abandoned his bus and Precious.

However, the matter was reported to a police team at Iyana Ipaja under bridge who then radioed Elere police station, Agege. Officers from Elere Police Station then took Precious to the scene of the crime in the night and people in the neighbourhood deflated the four tyres of the bus.

Balogun was apprehended around 1:00 am the following morning, as he came back to stealthily remove his bus (unknown to him that the case had been reported to the police).

The case has subsequently been transferred to the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti Yaba, where the suspect is undergoing further interrogation

HealthNAFDAC Seizes Drugs For Ojudu Free Health Programme by Etumgbe(op): 11:08am On Jun 18, 2013
National Agency for Foods, Drugs Administration and Control has seized drugs meant for free health mission organised by Senator Babafemi Ojudu for his constituents.

The senator said this in Ado Ekiti on Monday at the commencement of the free health programme.

He called on the Director-General of the agency, Dr. Paul Orhii, to intervene to ensure quick release of the drugs so that the beneficiaries of the programme could enjoy them.

Although the lawmaker, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District at the upper legislative chamber, said the drugs were confiscated on Sunday in Lagos, he, however, did not give reasons for the agency’s action.

Explaining why he embarked on the programme, Ojudu said sudden death had been on the increase because many Nigerians had neglected check-ups.

According to the senator, good health improves productivity. He said through the programme, residents would have the opportunity to be diagnosed and treated free of charge for two weeks.

He said, “The reason behind the programme is that I am concerned about untimely death of people as a result of unavailability of health care services. Many times I have received calls that somebody would just slump and die. You would just hear that somebody you saw yesterday, just because of a brief head ache, slumped and died.”

PoliticsPolice Stole Our Joy – Father Of Slain Boy by Etumgbe(op): 11:48am On Jun 17, 2013
When on June 13, 2013, the Ebun family went to pick up their son, Jide, from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, everybody was happy because the 17-year-old boy had been in Canada where he was schooling and had not seen his family for two years.

The family comprising the father, Olusegun, the mother, Funke, the first son, Jide, the only daughter, Damilola, and the last child, nine-year-old Timilehin, were in a Sports Utility Vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, with registration number HD844EKY.

Timilehin sat in the centre of the back seat with his two siblings where he was playing a hand-held game.

The nine-year-old boy and his father were engaged in an argument as regards his future ambition. While the little boy said he wanted to be a footballer, his father advised him to go to the university to study medicine after which he could go ahead to become a footballer.

The reunion was however short-lived. On getting to Mile 12 end of Ikorodu Expressway, a police stray bullet pierced through the windscreen of the vehicle and killed Timilehin on the spot.

Our correspondent, who visited the family home of the deceased on Sunday, saw sympathisers coming in droves to condole with the family.

The deceased’s father told PUNCH Metro that the police had stolen their joy.

He said life would never be the same without the little boy who was full of life and was always making the house lively.

Narrating what transpired on the fateful day, he said, “Jide had been away for two years and my plan was to go and visit him in Toronto, Canada. However, he said he missed his siblings and wanted to come home to see them. So, we decided to let him come. On that day, we went to pick him up at the airport. We were on our way back home at Ikorodu.

“On getting to Kosofe Bus Stop at Mile 12, we saw policemen trying to extort money from a commercial bus driver who had climbed the culvert to drive back towards Ketu. There was an argument in the process and policemen started shooting.

“One of the bullets pierced through my windscreen and hit Timilehin in the eye. The broken glass also injured my wife and Jide. Immediately after the shooting, the policemen boarded their patrol vehicle and fled to their station. I carried my son to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.”

Olusegun said touts were able to chase the policemen but in the ensuing pandemonium, his telephone and ATM cards were stolen.

He said on getting to the police station, he dropped the corpse of his son at the counter and all the policemen fled.

He said he remained at the station for two hours as the policemen refused to take his statement.

He said, “I got to the station with my son’s corpse and I created a scene as I told the policemen that they must kill me too. They all fled and when the Divisional Police Officer finally attended to me, the policemen were denying the allegations as they traded blame.

“After two hours at the station, I had to call a senior official of the Lagos State Government who then spoke with the DPO. My wife then wrote a statement.”

Olusegun described his son as an intelligent boy and a fan of Manchester United Football Club.

He said, “Timilehin was the only one that could operate our television very well even though he was just in primary three at Royal Scholars Montessori School. He loved watching Eurosports and cartoons and his best team was Manchester United. The police have stolen our joy.”

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, told PUNCH Metro that it was possible that Timilehin was killed by armed robbers as a robbery incident had occurred in the area that night.

He however said the team of policemen on duty had been arrested and transferred to X Squad, the police department in charge of handling crimes committed by policemen.

He said, “Some policemen were trying to arrest a commercial bus driver when violence erupted. The policemen fired teargas but the hoodlums proved stubborn so the policemen called for backup. When backup arrived, shots were fired to disperse the hoodlums and the policemen arrested the driver.

“About two hours later, a man came to the station with his dead son, saying policemen killed him. The team of policemen has been arrested along with the driver. However, we are not ruling out the possibility that the boy was killed by robbers because there was a robbery in the area that night.”

A police source identified some of the arrested policemen as Inspectors Olaleye Sunday, Sule Dauda and Sergeant Razaq Alowonle.

The deceased’s father, however, berated the police authorities for trying to exonerate their men.

“It was policemen that killed my son, not armed robbers because I saw a patrol vehicle; except robbers now use patrol vehicles. The police have stolen our joy and all we want is justice for the death of Timilehin,” he said.

CrimeSchool Proprietor Caught Having Sex With 11-year-old Pupil by Etumgbe(op): 9:39am On Jun 13, 2013
Residents of Agric Olope area of Ado Ekiti have apprehended the proprietor of a private Nursery and Primary School, who was found in a bush allegedly having sex with a pupil of his school.

The incident happened on Monday after school hours.

Our correspondent gathered on Wednesday that the proprietor, identified as Mr. Tunde Ibitoye, picked the girl and another pupil of the same school and was taking them home in his car when he stopped at a deserted place and went into the bush pretending to be defecating.

An eyewitness, who said he caught the suspect in the act, said some minutes after the man went inside the bush, he called the victim to bring him tissue to clean up.

The eyewitness, who identified himself as Kayode Ayeni, said he became curious when he saw the girl going inside the bush knowing full well that a man had first gone into the bush some minutes earlier.

He said he traced the girl’s movement and found the man half naked and the girl also undressed and was in a compromising position.

Ayeni claimed that the proprietor was having carnal knowledge of the girl when he found the two of them inside the bush.

The argument between the eyewitness and the proprietor was said to have attracted a crowd of passersby and residents to the scene.

The suspect was said to have been beaten up and escaped being lynched due to the arrival of some policemen at the scene.

The policemen, who stormed the scene, dispersed the crowd and took the suspect away.

When contacted, the state command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said Ibitoye had been arrested for “defiling an 11-year-old pupil,” adding that the suspect was currently being interrogated by the police

The PPRO said the girl told police investigators that the proprietor had sex with her.

He added that the girl confessed that the last act was the fourth time the proprietor would be having sex with her.

He also said the girl’s father told the police that there was a time he noticed blood stain on his daughter’s clothes but the man thought it was early menstruation.

The proprietor, however, insisted that he did not have sex with the girl but was just assisting her home after the school hours.

But Babayemi said the girl had been taken to a hospital for medical examination, saying the result would be made public when it was out.

Babayemi said, “There is a man in our custody who was said to be caught while having sex with an 11-year-old pupil. The girl has been taken to hospital for examination and we are expecting the result.

“We are investigating to see if we can find other girls who the man might have defiled. If we find any, it would further corroborate the allegation. But we advise parents to alway ensure that their children are put in custody of responsible people.”

CrimeWhy We Prefer Live Human Beings – Suspected Parts Dealer by Etumgbe(op): 8:56am On Jun 13, 2013
By Evelyn Usman
LAGOS — Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja have arrested three fleeing members of a syndicate who allegedly specialized in selling live humans and decomposing human parts for money rituals.

Their arrest came barely three weeks after some of their members were paraded at the Lagos State Police Command, where they confessed to have sold live human beings for N40,000, hands—N4,000 and head—N8,000.

Those recently arrested are Gazali Akewadola (60), the native doctor who allegedly offered N40,000 for a live human being, Alfa Taofeek Akinola (35) and Kazeem Sanni (25).

To the bewilderment of all, Gazali confessed that live human beings were cheaper than buying dead human parts, saying all parts of a live human being are vital in the preparation of money ritual.

For instance, he said a life human being was bought for N40,000, “but at the end of the day, you get a lot of expensive parts from it. Aside that, it is even more potent because the efficacy of the charm or concoction prepared with live human parts cannot be compared with the ones prepared with dead parts.

“When a life human being is killed, one will get fresh blood which is used in preparing some charms. The same body will also give you hairs from private part, head and some mustache which are used for other ritual purposes. The private part is also very useful for the preparation of effective concoction. The head, flesh intestines, liver, heart, eyes, lips and tongues can be used for pepper soup which is usually very delicious than that of animal meat. I usually take the pepper soup so as to assure those who patronize us that it is not harmful. It also fortifies one spiritually.

“If you buy a full human being for N30,000 or N40,000 and pieces it, you will end up getting N100,000 or more because you will get more than 10 parts that will yield more money for you.”

Gazali who hails from Folahan, Ado-Odo in Owode Yewa Local Government Area of Ogun State, further said: “I am an Islamic teacher and a cleric. I own an Islamic school in Owode Yewa. I am also married with eight children. I am also a native doctor. I cure people of their ailments and help those who want to get rich quick, by using human parts to prepare charms and concoctions for them.

We use soft bones to cure epilepsy

“Most of the human parts I bought were sold to me by Kazeem Sanni. He used to sell dead human head between N3,000 and N8000, depending on the market price. The soft bones that can easily be grinded into powder are very cheap. It is just for N1,000. It is used to cure ailments like epilepsy.”

Asked why he did not use any of his children since he has eight of them, he said that would reduce the potency of the ritual concoction, adding that its potency depended solely on strangers being used. He said their victims were usually abducted from Lagos State and beyond, with the use of charms.

He further disclosed that aside the N40,000 paid to Sanni to get him a live human being, he gave him another N5,000 and a charm to hypnotize the male victims. But he said the plan almost failed as Sanni was almost caught. He, however, expressed regrets that despite the use of human parts to make other people rich, he ended up not only being poor but arrested along the line.

Money ritual charm changed my level

The second suspect, Alfa Taofeek, who is also an indigene of Owode Yewa in Ogun State confessed to have bought a human head from the third suspect, Kazeem, which he grinded and mixed with local gin.

According to him, “it was to enable me get rich. I am a Muslim cleric and I have been making people rich through this means but became jealous at a point and decided to get rich as well, since I was unable to get enough money from my clients.

“After drinking the concoction prepared with a human head, I got more customers and made more money. I even threw parties on a monthly basis to celebrate my new level.

“I also used part of the money to sponsor the graduation ceremony of some of my students in the Islamic school known as Alfa Taofeek Islamic School, at Owode Yewa.”

Customs officers lured me into money rituals

On his part, the third suspect, Kazeem Sanni, claimed to have opted for the money ritual business due to frustration from Customs men.

He said: “At a point, business was no longer moving because Customs men at the border were always seizing the goods, at the end of which their owners would force me to pay for them. I became frustrated even contemplated selling my father’s landed property. I decided to consult Alfa Taokeek Akinola to find out the cause of my predicament. He instructed me to get a human head in order to be rich. After that, he requested a live human being. I attempted kidnapping someone so that I can cut off his head but it was not possible. He then instructed me to exhume dead body from the graves which I did and got him three at the rate of N3,000 each.”

Their arrest, as explained by spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, was in compliance with the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko’s directive to SARS Commander, Abba Kyari, to get the fleeing suspects, after the arrest of three members of the syndicate on May 15, 2013, with human parts.

CrimeNDLEA Arrests Two Brothers With Cocaine by Etumgbe(op): 8:33am On Jun 13, 2013
BY LAWANI MIKAIRU
LAGOS — Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos have arrested two brothers for being in possession of 430 grammes of powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine.

According to Mr Ofoyeju Mitchell, Head, Public Affairs of NDLEA, the drug was hidden inside shoe sole and detected during the outward screening of Etihad passenger flight to India.

He said: “The first suspect, Okechukwu Samson Agwueze, 23, was arrested when the drug was found inside the sole of the shoe he wore during the screening. His cousin, Ogbonna Onwumere, 38, who sponsored his trip, was also arrested and currently being interrogated by narcotic investigators.”

NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr Hamza Umar, expressed delight over the seizure, saying: “It is gratifying that the cocaine which was concealed inside the sole of a shoe worn by the suspect was promptly detected. The second suspect who procured the travel documents and facilitated the drug deal was equally apprehended.”

Okechukwu Samson, who is a casual worker, looked remorseful and said his regret was that his cousin lured him into drug trafficking.

His words: “I work in construction sites as a labourer to earn a living. I had wanted to travel out of the country in search of greener pastures but I was swindled of my hard earned N360,000 while trying to get my travel documents.

“My cousin, Ogbonna Onwumere promised to sponsor me to India so that I can work and further my education. He invited me to Lagos that everything was set for me to travel and gave me the shoe to wear that mine was old. He never told me there was drug in it.”

The cousin, Ogbonna who is an importer of textiles said that he wanted to use Okechukwu to smuggle the drugs to India.

“I wanted to use him to smuggle the drugs because I used my money in processing his travel documents. I was doing him a favour but I will have to get my money back. Why must I sponsor him if there is no benefit” he stated.

Both suspects are from Enugu State.

Politics$620,000 Bribe: Reps Keep Mum On Lawan’s Probe by Etumgbe(op): 8:07am On Jun 12, 2013
The House of Representatives has said that it will not make further comments on Mr. Farouk Lawan, its member at the centre of the $620,000 bribery allegation.

Lawan headed the ad-hoc committee of the House, which conducted an investigation into the management of fuel subsidy funds in April 2012.

The probe had uncovered how government agencies reportedly connived with fuel importers to defraud the nation to the tune of over N1.07tn.

But an oil businessman, Mr. Femi Otedola, later alleged that Lawan demanded $620,000 bribe from him in the course of the investigation to free two of his firms from the list of indicted importers.

The Peoples Democratic Party legislator from Kano State admitted collecting the money but claimed that he wanted to use it as e evidence to trap Otedola, who was pressuring him with money.

The House had reacted to the issue by relieving Lawan of the headship of the ad-hoc committee. He was also suspended as the substantive chairman of the Committee on Education, from which he was later removed completely.

The House had constituted its own separate investigation into the allegation against Lawan, aside from his prosecution by anti-graft agencies.

Our correspondent observed on Tuesday that 12 months after the House opened the investigation, the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges had not produced a report.

The initial timeline given to the committee, which is headed by Mr. Gambo Musa, was 21 days.

However, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, said in Abuja that the legislature would no longer comment on the matter.

Mohammed was reacting to a question from The PUNCH on why the report of the investigation had not been made public till date.

Mohammed said it would be “prejudicial” to continue to comment on a case that was before a law court.

Incidentally, the deadline given to the Musa committee to submit its report had long expired before the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission filed charges against Lawan before an Abuja Federal High Court.

But Mohammed insisted, “As far as the House is concerned, the matter is in court.

“We do not want to be in contempt of the court by continuing to comment on that case.”

Mohammed noted that the position of the House did not suggest that it was shielding Lawan.

He recalled that the same House did not only relieve the lawmaker of his committee responsibilities but also called on security agencies to prosecute him, if he was found wanting.

SportsUyo Township Stadium Banned From Hosting Matches by Etumgbe(op): 5:04pm On Jun 11, 2013
The Uyo Township Stadium has been banned from playing host to any Glo Premier League matches, supersport.com can report.

The League Management Company, LMC, has put the stadium in Uyo under ban for the rest of the season.

The development means Akwa United will now play their home matches at the Rojenny Stadium in Oba near Onitsha.

The Uyo Township Stadium was banned following the alleged assault on centre referee, Henry Ogunyamodi on 5 June by unidentified fans during the Akwa United and Warri Wolves game.

The match was abandoned after the first half when the referee refused to continue officiating on the grounds that he had been attacked by some fans in the dressing room.

As at the time of abandonment Akwa United were leading 2-0 through goals from Ubong Ekpai and Emmanuel Enize.

Akwa United will also lose three points and three goals to Warri Wolves.

LMC has also directed Akwa United to pay the referee and foot the bill for the pitch panels destroyed during the game.

“We need to send a strong signal. They will also compensate each of the assaulted refs with N200,000 and pay for the cost of advert and branding materials destroyed by their fans. Other sanctions might be imposed after full investigation,” said the LMC chief operating officer, Salihu Abubakar to supersport.com.

It is understood that Akwa United will appeal the sanctions at the Organising and Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Another NPFL club, Lobi Stars were also at the wrong end of the LMC’s stick.

The Makurdi club will play their next eight home matches behind closed doors after their fans allegedly attacked centre referee, Audu Ahmed Ibrahim on 8 May when Lobi played out a 0-0 draw against Enyimba in Katsina-Ala.

Supersport.com was informed that the case of Lobi Stars is currently with the disciplinary committee of the NFF for final pronouncement.

“Their case is before the NFF disciplinary committee. We just took a preliminary decision to ask them to play eight games behind closed doors,” said Abubakar.

CrimeBaby’s Eyes, Private Part Removed In Hospital by Etumgbe(op): 3:20pm On Jun 11, 2013
Angry youths of Abule Iroko in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, have vandalised an ambulance and an SUV at a medical centre in the area following the mutilation of a 13-month old boy, Obinna Ole.

P.M.NEWS gathered that trouble started when the parents of the child, Mr. and Mrs. Obinna Joseph Ole, wanted to take the corpse of their dead child home for burial on Sunday and discovered that the eyes, tongue, ears and his private part had been removed.

The parents, P.M.NEWS learnt, raised an alarm which attracted other people around the area and the youths quickly mobilised themselves and stormed the hospital. They vandalised everything on sight.

According to a police source, if not for the timely arrival of the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Sango Police Station, Supol Gabriel Dibie and a team of detectives from Sango, the Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Babawale Funsho Joshua would have been lynched.

When P.M.NEWS visited the hospital Monday, only police detectives were around. Two vehicles parked in the compound, an ambulance with registration number LND 850 AA and Honda Odyssey SUV marked FST 555 AU, were damaged by the rampaging youths, while glass windows in the building were smashed.

Following the attack, the police from Sango moved in and arrested the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Babawale Funsho Joshua and three others.

Ogun State Police Command spokesman, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest, said the medical doctor was arrested alongside three others in connection with the incident

“Obinna Ole was on admission at the hospital for an ailment before he eventually died. The story became astonishing when the father, Mr. Obinna Ole, went to claim the corpse of his late baby and discovered that the eyes, tongue, two lips, two ears, penis, nails and the left hand vein of young Ole had been cut-off.

“Policemen attached to Ota Division, led by the DPO, CSP Gabriel Dibie, moved to the scene and arrested the suspects,” Adejobi disclosed.

He confirmed that the corpse of the baby had been deposited at the Ifo General Hospital for autopsy.

Three others arrested with Dr. Joshua are Oguntunde Opeyemi, Olaide Adeyanju and Temitope Muraina.

Adejobi disclosed further that the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department at Eleweran to investigate the matter.

He assured the public that the police would unravel the truth of the matter.

PoliticsCourt Reserves Judgement In Al-mustapha’s Appeal by Etumgbe(op): 5:39pm On Jun 10, 2013
An appeal court sitting in Lagos, south west Nigeria, Monday reserved judgement in an appeal filed by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, and Abdulateef Shofolahan.

After the two parties adopted their written addresses, Al-Mustapha’s lawyer, Joseph Dawodu (SAN) urged the appeallate court to allow the appeal on the ground that the evidence of the two principal witnesses, Abdulahi Katako and Sergeant Barnabas Jabila aka Rogers, were contradictory and unreliable.

Barrister Olalekan Ojo, who is the lawyer to Shofolahan also urged the court to allow the appeal on the ground that the evidences put forward were rejected while the court was also looking for the evidences to convict both suspects at all costs.

After their submissions the state counsel, Lawal Pedro urged the appellate court to dismiss the appeal of the convicts and affirm the ruling of the lower court on the grounds that sufficient backgrounds were presented before the court.

At the end of the adoption of the written addresses of the parties the court thereafter reserved judgement.

Justice Ibrahim Saulawa of the Court of Appeal, Lagos southwest Nigeria, on Thursday, 30 May, 2013, withdrew from the case.

PoliticsTension In APC Over Sharing Of Offices by Etumgbe(op): 5:14pm On Jun 10, 2013
THERE is tension in the yet-to-be registered main merger opposition party, All Progressive Congress, over distribution of offices.

The APC is a product of a merger between the Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change, All Nigeria Peoples Party and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and it has an avowed mission to dislodge the PDP from power in 2015.

Already, sources within the APC on Sunday confided in our correspondents that there had been disagreements over the sharing of party offices among the stakeholders from the different parties.

Investigations showed that the CPC and the ANPP disagreed over the post of the National Secretary, which the former insisted must be given to it.

A source within the APC confided in one of our correspondents that, “the ANPP, specifically Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, wanted the position of the protem National Secretary but was schemed out.

“The CPC and the ACN conspired. The CPC insisted on the position of secretary or nothing. Those in the ANPP are not excited about this.

“There is also a proposal that the CPC in addition to producing the secretary will get the presidential slot while the ACN gets the chairmanship of the party in addition to producing the Vice-Presidential candidate.”

Shekarau was the ANPP presidential candidate in the 2011 elections and he has been one of the major forces behind the merger agreement.

The ACN, CPC and ANPP have already scheduled a meeting for this week to resolve alleged disagreements over sharing of offices.

National Publicity Secretary of the ANPP, Chief Emma Eneukwu, however said he was unaware of any such disagreement.

According to him, there is nothing to suggest that the ANPP has any disagreement with the arrangement made by the leadership of the APC.

He said, “I am not aware of this. I know of the arrangement that we have with regards to the constitution of the Interim Management Committee. If there is any disagreement, my party has not told me about it.

“But I know that there is an agreement that each of the three parties will produce one member each in the IMC.

“There are only three positions: Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer, so there is no way one party can take two positions out of three.”

He noted that the desperation of those who are scared of the rising profile of the APC could be responsible for the spreading of deliberate falsehood and misinformation.

Speaking in the same vein, National Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, accused the PDP and some unnamed “jittery forces” of peddling the rumour about the disagreement within the ranks of the opposition on the sharing of offices.

He said there was no iota of truth in the rumour making the rounds that the ranks of the APC had been polarised because of this.

“That is the handiwork of the ruling party and those jittery because of the coming together of the opposition political parties under the banner of APC,” Mohammed said.

Asked about when the yet-to-be registered party would submit its application to the Independent National Electoral Commission for registration, he said that would be done “soon.”

The National Publicity Secretary of the CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, said the main business before the proposed party at the moment was the issue of registration.

According to him, it is when the party becomes duly registered that the issue of the distribution of offices will come to play.

“It is when the issue of registration is settled that we can discuss other issues. Even at that, we recognise the fact that no sacrifice is too much to remove this indignity that the (President Goodluck) Jonathan administration represents,” he said in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday.

He also took time off to explain that the national leadership of the party was doing everything within its power to ensure that no loose end was left untied.

Fahakin said, “What we have done is that the national leadership of our party reasoned that, look, since we don’t have a template, even INEC doesn’t have a template to hand to us; you know the concept of merger is a novelty in this country.

“That is why everybody is looking at the Constitution and the Electoral Act, we are trying our best to ensure we get things right.

“For now, the National Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of each of the merging political parties making a total of nine, have been saddled with the responsibility of writing to INEC.”

He explained that only political parties who had held their conventions and had agreed to the merger at this level were entitled to write INEC.

The ACN, ANPP and CPC are expected to write INEC, signifying their intension to merge this week.

In a related development, there are strong indications that APGA may not field candidates in the next set of elections in 2015.

This is due to the protracted crisis rocking the party. Informed sources within the factionalised party confided in The PUNCH that APGA’s internal crisis is not likely to end soon.

Chief Victor Umeh leads one faction of the party while Chief Maxi Okwu leads the other.

A leading member of the party and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has approached the leadership of the APC signalling his intension to drag APGA into the merger.

InvestmentDangote Now 25th Richest Man In The World by Etumgbe(op): 2:29pm On Jun 04, 2013
Nigerian billionaire and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has scored yet another first. This time, he has been named Africa’s first $20 billion man, thus becoming one of the top 25 richest men in the world.

Dangote, the President/Chief Executive of the pan-African conglomerate, the Dangote Group, has become the first African entrepreneur to lay claim to a $20 billion fortune as the stock value of the flagship of his holding, Dangote Cement, leaped just about three-fourths since March, when Forbes last released its annual ranking of the world’s richest people.

With a current market cap of $20.5 billion, Dangote Cement becomes the first Nigerian company to achieve a market capitalization of over $20 billion.

The world renowned business and financial intelligence news magazine, the Forbes has reported that Dangote’s 93 per cent stake in the cement company is now worth $19.5 billion.

Added to this are his controlling stakes in other publicly-listed companies like Dangote Sugar and National Salt Company of Nigeria and his significant shareholdings in other blue-chips like Zenith Bank, UBA Group and Dangote Flour; his extensive real estate portfolio, jets, yachts and current cash position, which includes more than $300 million in recently awarded Dangote Cement, Dangote is now worth more than $20 billion.

To put in the right context, the Forbes reported that the Nigerian billionaire is now among the top 25 richest people in the world.

With his fortune, Dangote is richer than Russia’s richest man, Alisher Usmanov, richer than India’s Lakshmi Mittal and running neck and neck with India’s Mukesh Ambani.

He is catching up to such Americans as Google’s billionaire founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

It would be recalled that Dangote Cement had recorded an unprecedented surge in its share price largely due to market response to the company’s impressive results in the first quarter of this year.

The cement manufacturer’s unaudited results for the three months ending March 31 had showed that the company’s pre-tax profit rose to $339 million, representing an 80.6% increase from last year and a strong indicator of the company’s future earning potential. The results also indicate a 79.5% rise in its earnings per share over the corresponding period last year.

Carl Franklin, Dangote Cement’s Head of Investor Relations in the U.K was quoted to have explained the Company’s share boost, in an email response to Forbes that in the first quarter of 2013, the company had a huge increase in demand across Nigeria, gas supply improved considerably and the capacity was much more ramped up. “So Q1 was the first sign of just how profitable we can be in Nigeria.

The amazing thing is that 66% of our gas-fired production in Q1 was done at 84% gas. Imagine what would happen to margins if we did the same amount at 95%. This has given investors a good sense of what we can really do when everything goes in the right direction,” Franklin said.

“It’s certainly a landmark for a Nigerian company and we’re proud to be the first to achieve it. Obviously we are focusing on building long-term and sustainable value for shareholders through our investments in Nigeria and Africa.

Nigeria is a very entrepreneurial country and I can assure you that other companies will follow us in achieving this.”
