Gulma,in Argungu on Sunday, said that prior to joining the judiciary sector in 1980, he had served as a teacher for 10 years. He stated that his love for teaching in a village school was to enable him contribute in raising the standard of education, considering the dearth of teachers The former judge explained that for this reason, he decided to resume teaching at the Fadama and Argungu Emirate Model primary schools in 2012, after his retirement. He said his quest for knowledge propelled him to study law and become a Judge, serving for 19 years at the bench. “A knowledgeable, well trained, dedicated and responsible teacher, will be honoured even after his death,” he stressed, adding that his decision to resume teaching while in retirement, had made him a fulfilled person He called on the state government to employ more qualified teachers in primary and junior secondary schools. “it is not enough to build more schools, but qualified and competent teachers need to be employed too.” “The practice of not paying teachers adequately and promptly can only discourage people from becoming professional teachers,” he said.(NAN). - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/retired-high-court-judge-in-kebbi-teaches-in-primary-schools/#sthash.z8x5qKSK.dpuf |

By Godfrey Bivbere & Segun Shabi LAGOS — Port operations at the Tin-can Island Container Terminal (TICT) were, Thursday, halted for hours following the killing of a Customs officer by a mobile policeman. The deceased Customs officer was assigned from the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to escort containers from the port. The policeman, identified as Sergeant Peter Adegbesan, was said to have left his service riffle uncorked when it fell from his hand and started firing. Adegbesan was said to have attempted to control the riffle. As he lifted it, the Customs officer, Assistant Inspector O. A. Oro was hit severally by bullets from the gun. He was said to have died before he could be rushed to the hospital. In reaction, the clearing agents who were at the scene of the incident descended on the police officer, but for the intervention of some dockworkers, the killer cop would have been beaten to death. Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of Tin-Can Island Command of the NCS, Chris Osunkwo, described the incident as unfornate, saying the policeman has been placed under protective custody at the Apapa Port police command. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/policeman-kills-customs-officer-in-lagos/#sthash.z23AyOik.dpuf |
ABUJA — A 27-year-old pastor, Emmanuel Onyiuke, Thursday, appeared before an Abuja Senior Magistrate Court, Karu, Abuja, charged with homosexualism which he was said to have practiced on a 19-year-old. Onyiuke, who is the General Overseer of Divine Power Healing Ministry in Jikwoyi, FCT, committed the alleged offence on August 2. The accused was arraigned on a four-count charge of causing hurt by means of poison with intent to commit homosexual and unnatural offence. Prosecutor Atteh Effiong told the court that the accused gave the 19-year-old some alcoholic drinks, which were laced with sleep inducing substance. He said: “The victim woke up and saw himself lying on the bed of the accused person in his bedroom. “The accused had sexual intercourse with him through his anus against his will which left him with serious injuries afterwards” The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The counsel to the accused made an oral application for bail. Ruling on the application for bail, Senior Magistrate Anna Akobi granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200,000 and a surety in like sum. Akobi held that the surety must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 10, who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court. She adjourned the case to September 19. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/pastor-in-court-over-alleged-homosexual-activities/#sthash.mBOZsdrp.dpuf |

A 25-year-old man committed suicide on Thursday morning by electrocuting himself on an overhead power line in Nakuru, Kenya. According to an eyewitness, Susan Wachuka, the young man removed all of his clothing before climbing the transmitter line. “We thought it was usual of him to UnCloth,” she said. The man, who was only identified by the locals as Emmanuel, is said to have been a carpenter who was having mental problems, adding that he was always quiet. Kenya power staff arrived at the scene but were forced to wait for crime police officers for three hours before removing the body. By Bayo Olupohunda Dear Sirs, I hope this letter meets you in a good, patriotic spirit. Let me first use this opportunity to join other Nigerians in congratulating the opposition on the registration of the long-awaited alternative party, the All Progressives Congress. Its registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission was a significant moment for Nigerians. It, hopefully, signals a new dawn considering that for once, a truly national opposition platform which has been elusive in the Fourth Republic, appears to have emerged to challenge the ruling party in 2015 and beyond. In many ways too, the merger of the once disparate opposition parties under a unifying bloc represents a milestone in the quest for the enthronement of genuine democracy. That the union has come at a time when this democracy is under imminent threat of annihilation by anti-democratic forces gives Nigerians cause to cheer. Now, they hope that the ruling party will subsequently be held accountable and its excesses curtailed. While also admitting that your union may not be a gathering of saints, it nonetheless, represents a starting point. It is the recognition of the role of a credible opposition that Nigerians anxiously anticipated the success of the merger. No wonder also that they celebrated its registration. The widespread euphoria is at once a show of gratitude as well as appreciation of your commitment. That you all agreed to dissolve your existing parties to coalesce under a broad-based opposition is the mark of true patriots. The sacrifices your parties have made to bury individual egos and sectional interests may well be what our country needs to move this democracy forward. You will also have to agree with me that Nigerians were initially sceptical when the opposition initiated another merger plan. Do not blame them because the nightmare of past disappointment is still fresh. On three occasions, you let Nigerians down. The most significant was the 2011 merger fiasco. Your failure to unite at the time is the reason why our country in a mess today. Now, the APC optimistically presents us with the opportunity to right the wrongs of the last 14 years. Of course, Nigerians know that this may not be a perfect union, yet, they hope you may put your house in order to challenge the Peoples Democratic Party’s 14 years’ misrule. And they are waiting to show the power of their votes in the next elections. They celebrated the APC because they want to trust you. Having been battered, bruised and left in the lurch by this government, they look forward to a new dawn in 2015 and beyond. Nigerians want security of lives and property, regular power supply, good roads, better schools, quality health care, end to ethnic strife, corruption and wasteful government. Can your party deliver? Is the APC the new messiah? Will your party put an end to this vicious circle of poverty and oppression that is synonymous with this government? That is why both of you stand on the threshold of history. That is why it is important that you must both realise your place in history. Will you continue to act like true patriots to ensure that the APC becomes a genuine opposition party? Can both of you ditch your personal ambitions for the common good? Nigerians are still worried about the danger your political egos pose to the survival of the new party. Indeed, there is a widely held belief that conflicts arising from clash of egos may yet destroy this union. Knowing that the 2011 merger collapsed for this same reason gives cause for concern. For example, there are already speculations that you, Muhammadu Buhari, will present yourself as candidate again in 2015? While I do not doubt your personal integrity, it is also within your constitutional right to seek election. But will your candidacy be politically wise in 2015? Rather than fuel speculations about your possible candidacy, I will suggest that your party begins a search for a younger candidate with national appeal. This means that you must accept to ditch your ambitions for the common good. That is the mark of true patriots. The opposition cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past. Nigerians have waited for this moment. They yearn for better life in 2015. They hope to be liberated from hunger, poverty and misery that have become their lot with the ruling party. They want to see improvement in their quality of life. They want to remove the horrible stigma of a people living on less than one dollar a day. They also hope that your party will save this country from hurtling down the precipice plotted for it by the ruling party. The APC can put an end to this circle of impunity in 2015. But the road ahead will not be easy. In the words of the great Tai Solarin, may your road be rough! There are still fundamental issues your party has not resolved. These issues are the heart of putting in place an enduring opposition that will outlive both of you. First, Nigerians want to see an agenda that is different from the PDP. They want to see how you intend to govern. Thus, apart from shopping for credible candidates, your next objective will be to show Nigerians how you intend to govern differently. They do not want business as usual. Even while they cannot wait to kick out the PDP in 2015, they do not want a party that is a clone of the ruling party. Now you have to figure out how you intend to resolve the ideological differences you brought into this alliance. How does your party intend to rule? How will the APC be different in ideology? Will you continue the looting of our commonwealth? Will you concentrate the wealth into the hands of a few at the expense of the suffering masses? Will you retain this expensive contraption called democracy or will you cut down on the size of government? Our lawmakers are said to be the highest paid globally. How do you intend to deal with a wasteful National Assembly that is a clear burden on the resources of this nation? What is your vision of the economic development that will ensure no Nigerian is left behind? Nigerians hope the APC will not continue this reckless waste of public funds at all levels by the PDP. They are also eager to see how you will address the age-long lopsided federal structure that concentrates too much power at the centre. If your party shows a clear path for nationhood, Nigerians are ready to give you the benefit of the doubt. The starting point will be to engage Nigerians in a continuous debate about your manifesto. They want to see the APC’s road map for the future. They are waiting to be convinced. It is not enough to just assume you want to replace the ruling party. Both of you have shown that you can make a difference. The defunct Action Congress has demonstrated this in the South-West. If the opposition party gets its act together, perhaps, our country will be saved from this gradual descent into a state of anomie. The judgment of history will be more than too harsh if your generation fails to seize this moment. http://www.punchng.com/opinion/open-letter-to-buhari-and-tinubu/ |

BY EMMA AMAIZE KOKO — PANDEMONIUM broke out, Monday, in Koko, Warri North Local Government Area, Delta State, as soldiers attacked and injured police officers from Delta State Police Command, who were on escort duty with the state Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Anthonia Ashiedu. The soldiers beat a police corporal, who drove one of the police vehicles, to pulp for allegedly blaring siren in the premises of the Warri North Local Government Council, which is close to a military outpost. The corporal fainted because of the severe beating and was rushed to hospital for medical attention. At press time, junior police police officers were spoiling for a showdown with soldiers in the state, saying it has become a tradition for soldiers to attack police officers in the state without justifiable reason. State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, confirmed to Vanguard when contacted, saying the soldiers accused the police officers of blaring siren inside the secretariat of the council. He said: “It is sheer brutality. I have reported the matter to the Inspector General of Police and contacted army authorities in the state, but they said they did not authorise the assault. “They told us that there is no bad blood, but there is bad blood. Why did they attack fellow uniformed men in such a manner in the course of their duty? We are making a formal report on the incident. “My stand is that the soldiers responsible for this attack should be fished out and made to face the music.” A source who spoke to Vanguard said: “The police officers from the B’ Operations Department of the Delta State Police Command were on escort duty with the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Anthonia Ashiedu. It was an empowerment programme for the less privileged by the state government and because she was carrying some money for the programme, they requested police escort. The frog jump “As it is usual on such occasion, the siren was on when they entered the premises of Warri North Local Government Coucil and about eight soldiers came from a nearby outpost and asked the police driver, Corporal Ekome, to frog-jump. “The police officer that led the team came to tell the soldiers that they should stop the confrontation, but the soldiers attacked him, seized his rifle and tore the button on his uniform. “With the atmosphere charged, more soldiers joined their colleagues and insisted that the police driver must frog jump, which he resisted. “The soldiers descended on him, ignoring the appeal from other police officers to stop creating a bad impression of Nigeria security officials in the eyes of the public. “Some of the policemen wanted to retaliate, but were prevailed upon by the crowd, which watched the show of shame with dismay. “The commissioner was shocked by the incident as she stood watching without knowing what to make out of the ugly show of power.” A junior police officer said: “We are waiting to know what the Commissioner of Police and others will do on this matter. If they sweep it under the carpet, I can assure you that we will attack soldiers in isolated places in the state because this is own is getting too much. “Come to think of it, the job of internal security is that of the police. If not overzealousness, what is wrong in the police blaring siren in the premises of a local government council? Is that a reason for soldiers to attack policemen?” - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/soldiers-attack-policemen-in-delta/#sthash.CzSXbug7.dpuf |
BY SIMON EBEGBULEM BENIN CITY — IT was drama, Tuesday, at the venue of the verification of certificates of primary school teachers in Edo State, as a teacher in Asologun Primary School, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state, Mrs. Augusta Odemwinge could not read a sworn affidavit she purportedly tendered as part of her credentials. The state governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, who paid an unscheduled visit to the state Staff Training Centre, venue of the exercise, said “if you can’t read, what do you teach the pupils, what do you write on the board?” Chairman of the state Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Patrick Ikosimi, who was also at the screening to monitor the exercise, said that the woman’s failure was “an embarrassment.” On arrival at the centre, the governor took time to peruse some of the teacher’s credentials and documents presented. When Mrs. Odenwingie took her turn during the exercise, the governor, who listened to her defence, asked her to read the affidavit she presented, but she stuttered, to the consternation of everybody around. Ikosimi, who described Mrs. Odemwingie’s failure to read a document she presented as an embarrassment, said the union was in tune with the state government on the need to sanitise the school system. He said: “We are committed to partnering the government to reposition education in the state. What this teacher has just displayed is a show of shame; it shows the decadence in the education sector. “As the chairman of NUT, I had written to the governor that we are in total support of what he is doing. “He should properly involve the NUT, so that together we can fish out the culprits, who are not viable as far as the system is concerned,” he said. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/verification-edo-teacher-cant-read-own-certificate/ |

SIX mobile policemen attached to the Ondo State Police Command have been arrested for shooting a tanker driver, simply identified as Mr. Friday, dead and setting his truck ablaze. Vanguard reports the six policemen stopped Friday's truck at about 2. a.m close to the Ore toll gate last Wednesday and after questioning the driver, allowed him to continue his journey. Friday was coming from Lagos to Warri. Only for them to shoot at him in company of his manager, Mr. Henshell Gbugbadia who escaped death by the whiskers by running into the bush. The policemen, thinking the manager Mr Henshell was also dead in the bush, reversed Friday's trailer to now head towards Lagos direction, then they set it ablaze to blot out any evidence. Fortunately, the surviving manager Henshell later called his Managing Director Mr. Muminogho Orogboh to brief him on the development. The matter was reported at the Ore toll gate police station from where the patrol team on duty that night were summoned and disarmed, having denied knowledge of the incident. But after orderly trial, the six policemen allegedly confessed to the crime, saying they had to burn the dead driver and the truckhead to erase any trace of the incident because they did not know that the manager survived. They are currently being detained at the state police headquarters, Akure www.cemiasblog..com |

My people pls If you have a plant like the one in the picture below, get rid of it. This plant is very common at our houses, gardens, parks and offices (popular as indoor & outdoor plant). The plant (Dumb Cane or Dieffenbachia) is now proven to be dangerous, so, please take care! I know that the leaf of this plant causes itching if its sap (milk) touches your skin. But there are more dangerous facts! Read the details below.May be useful for you. You better believe it. Please read below. One of my friends almost lost her daughter who put a piece of the leaf of this plant in her mouth and her tongue swelled to the point of suffocation. This is one plant but there are others with the same characteristics of coloring. Those are also poisonous and we should get rid of them. Please watch out for our children. As we all leave our children at home in the hands of a nanny, we should give them a safe environment where they can play.Name: Dumb Cane or Dieffenbachia "This plant that we have in our homes and offices is extremely dangerous! This plant is common in Rwanda. It is a deadly poison, most specially for the children. It can kill a kid in less than a minute and an adult in 15 minutes. It should be uprooted from gardens and taken out of offices. If touched, one should never touch his/her eyes; it can cause partial or permanent blindness." SHARE PLS.

By SONI DANIEL Factional Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors Forum (NGF), Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, leading a group of 19 governors, appeared back in the trenches, yesterday. Jang and Amaechi renewed the NGF crisis after the former scheduled a meeting of governors for Abuja today. The Rivers governor kicked against the meetings, describing his Plateau colleague as an impostor, desperately trying to portray himself as the leader of the NGF. Amaechi, who trounced Jang by 19 votes to 16 during the May 24 election of the NGF to emerge the group’s Chairman, warned Jang to desist from further acts of impersonation, saying he might be compelled to take action against him. Jang was said to have called the meeting of the NGF for Abuja today, during which very sensitive national issues are expected to be discussed. Sunday Vanguard gathered that the meeting, expected to take place at the Jang’s faction office in Maitama, is to discuss the issue of local government autonomy that was killed by the Senate in the constitution amendment process but endorsed by the House of Representatives. It was also learnt that dwindling earnings to the Federation Account from oil arising from unabated theft in the Niger Delta is listed for discussion by the NGF faction. A notice of the meeting, seen by Sunday Vanguard, read: “The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau State, has summoned an emergency meeting of members of the forum. ”The meeting will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the NGF Secretariat, 2 Nana Close, off Erie Crescent, Nile Street, Maitama, Abuja at 7.30 p.m. “The agenda for the meeting are: Constitution Amendment.” But Amaechi, in a short message to our correspondent, asked his fellow governors to ignore the meeting and wait for a formal notice of meeting from him, as the Chairman of the group. The Rivers governor said that the NGF, under his leadership, had not scheduled any meeting for today and that issues to be discussed would be made known to them when a meeting date was taken. Amaechi said: “Again, I want Nigerians to know that Jang is an impostor, having tried to steal my victory. He was not elected by the majority of governors, who were in attendance during the election on May 24. “On what basis does he summon a meeting of the NGF? Nigerians should tell Jang to respect himself and desist from impersonating me”. Amaechi disclosed that he was in touch with the leadership of the National Assembly on the issue of constitution review and that the NGF would take a decision on most of the issues deliberated upon by the NASS. ‘We won’t attend’ It also emerged yesterday that many of the 36 governors might not attend the Jang group’s meeting because of the controversy generated by recent events in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the NGF. None of the five PDP governors from the North, who are uncomfortable with the leadership of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, is likely to attend the meeting by the Plateau governor, whose leadership is seen as a ploy by the Presidency to weaken the Amaechi’s leadership of the NGF. One of the five governors, Murtala Nyako, of Adamawa State, who was contacted through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Ahmed Sajoh, said there was no way he could attend any meeting called by Jang since he did not win the election of the NGF. Nyako said: “As far as we are concerned, Jang cannot call a meeting of the NGF because he is not the Chairman and there was no time that we elected him as such. That is our position.” Trouble shooting parley with OBJ In the meantime, Sunday Vanguard learnt, yesterday, that the Jang group, after today’s meeting, may meet former President Olusegun Obasanjo tomorrow as part of the efforts to resolve the lingering crisis in the NGF. The meeting, according to a source, will be held in Abuja. “The Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau, will, on Monday, lead other members of the forum on a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abuja as part of the reconciliation process. You know he is a former president, as well as a former chairman, BoT of PDP and, with his wealth of experience, he has a lot to offer and we are optimistic that he will intervene and the problem will be over,” the source said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/amaechi-jang-clash-again-as-ngf-faction-summons-meeting/
