Former heads of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) failed to remit the sum of N1.993 trillion recovered funds, a security and investigation consultant, George Uboh has claimed.

Details of the allegations in documents sighted by Daily Trust are contained in a petition to the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) dated 19th December.

The petition signed by the former EFCC consultant, requested the DSS to make the acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu effect remittance of the funds to federal government coffers and prosecute him.

Uboh said that of the N2.051 trillion recovered by the EFCC since inception, only N6.7 billion was remitted to the federal government leaving a balance of N1.993 trillion unremitted funds.

Meanwhile, executive director the Citizens Advancement for Social and Economic Rights (CASER), Barrister Frank Tietie has given the National Assembly 48 hours to review all cases handled by the EFCC where persons, who have forfeited monies to the commission will appear to testify.

I invested all my Savings from NYSC in Savanah Bank, The Bank Packed up and left me with Nothing. I bought 10,000 shares in Transcorp when Obasanjo and "Madam Stock Exchange" initially sold the fraud to Nigerians but up till today, no shares were allocated to me and my money was not refunded. I remember my then employer deducting money from my wages and paying into government owned Housing Fund and also into the National Pension Fund, the 2 bodies were dissolved and my money dissolved with it. My Father and millions of Nigerians also paid into the same funds for more than 30 years and nothing came out of it.
Some state governments are owing their workers up to 1 year wages, the federal government and some parastatals are not different.
My father-in-law gave his life to NTA as a photojournalist travelling all over the country to cover events. Many years after his death, his widow is still waiting for NTA to pay his entitlements.
Remember how government came up with idea of community banks and encouraged Nigerians to patronise them, remember Allied Bank, Lobi Bank, Abacus Bank, City Express Bank, Assurance Bank of Nigeria, Hallmark Bank Plc, Ivory Merchant Bank, Lead Merchant Bank, Metropolitan Bank, All States Trust Bank, Coop and Commerce Bank, Commerce Bank, Credite Bank, Pinnacle Commercial Bank, Kapital Merchant Bank, Ivory Merchant Bank, Prime Merchant Bank, Republic Bank, Eagle Bank Plc, Liberty Bank, Progress Bank, North South Bank, Pan African Bank; remember pensioners who had their money in Societe Generale, dont forget the traders whose lives were destroyed by Gulf Bank, and many more too numerous to mention. Should we blame these people for keeping their hard earned money in NDIC insured banks ? Dont ask me about NDIC please.
On a different scale, remember how many hours you spent at the polling booth to vote for Buhari, remember how we all campaigned vigorously to remove Jonathan and how many people you encouraged to vote for PMB. What has come out of it for us all ?
How about the money you worked hard for and contributed when your Churches /Mosques wanted to establish those private universities and now your children are excluded from the qualitative education they offer because you can not afford the tuition fees ? What do you think about the money you pay to NEPA or whatever it is called now every month regardless of whether they supply you electricity or not ?
How are these different from MMM.
I agree that some people are into MMM because of greed but most of those who invested in MMM did so because they have been duped by some government backed schemes in the past. There is poverty in the land and people are looking for ways to survive. They knew the risk they were getting into and were all willing to take the risk. Afterall, living in Nigeria at all at this moment is a risk and working for the government is also a risk slightly lower than investing in MMM.
The truth is every Nigerian living in Nigeria is into one form of MMM or the other and I do not see any sense in mocking anybody for taking a risk, as long as it is with their own money. Afterall, Nigeria itself is a Ponzi scheme. God bless Nigeria.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has acted in national interest on the issue of data price increase, the Senate Committee on Communications has said.
The Committee, which visited the NCC headquarters in Abuja yesterday as part of it oversight functions, said Nigerians should see the commission as being on their side on the issue of data price increase.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan (Lagos West) who spoke on behalf of the Committee members said the NCC had taken some commendable steps to sanitize the telecom industry and the data price hike was one of them.
He said “Each time we invited the leadership of the agency to the National Assembly, they honoured our invitation and responded to our inquiries, particularly during the MTN issue, and of recent the data price floor. They have acted in national interests and Nigerians see NCC as being on their side.”
While receiving members of the Committee, the Commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Professor Danbatta, said unless the issues regarding the data price floor are resolved, it remains a whirlwind that would not do anybody any good.
He said it is imperative that all stakeholders agreed on appropriate price floor on data for the good of the industry, noting that a proper cost-based study would be carried out shortly to determine price floor.

PETROLEUM Technology Development Fund, PTDF, said the current economic reality prompted by global drop in oil price has made it imperative for it to review its overseas scholarship operations with a move towards focusing on Nigerian universities.

Executive Secretary, PTDF, Dr. Bello Aliyu Gusau, who led a team of its Management to a consultative meeting with officials of the Cranfield university, United Kingdom, stated that it is fundamental to review and restructure the existing partnership and come up with more creative ways of working together.

“I am happy Cranfield has seen the possibility of in-country co-operation because at the moment we are in the process of working with our own facilities, that we put in place for various programmes, so it’s really an important issue that we want, going forward, to put on the table.

“What we have actually focused on is the split-site PhD programmes and these are some of the issues that we want going forward to work with a university like Cranfield, to see how we can really put that in place either in some of our facilities or in any of the Nigerian universities that we are working with.

“But for us, the most important reason for coming here, is for the routine we are engaging or hoping to do, which is the new structure that involves synergy between Power and Energy”.

Gusau further explained that with a renewed focus on gas by the Federal Government, PTDF will be interested in developing the relevant manpower to service all the activities arising from the new attention to gas, the rapid development of power stations to involve supply of gas, and the development of other gas infrastructure such as gas pipelines and processing facilities for gas development.

In his response Director of Energy and Power, Cranfield University, Professor Feargal Brennan, expressed satisfaction to work with PTDF in developing local content for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry especially with regard to the localisation of the training of Nigerian students through an equal partnership concept with the Cranfield University.

THE Rivers State Police Command said on Monday that it had begun a manhunt for the killers of a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Alkali Mohammed of Mobile Police, Unit 48, and his orderly.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, told The PUNCH in an interview that special units of the Nigeria Police Force had joined the ongoing investigation with a view to apprehending the hoodlums and bringing them to justice.

A group of bandits suspected to be cultists had ambushed a police patrol team in Ujju community near Omoku in Ogba Egbema/Ndoni LGA of the state, killed and beheaded a DSP and his orderly.

It was learnt that the hoodlums escaped with the police patrol vehicle and took some weapons along with them.

But the state police spokesman promised that those behind the dastardly act would never go unpunished, adding that one policeman, who could be the driver of the patrol van, was still missing after the incident.

“The death of the DSP has been confirmed and his body has been recovered. The policeman (orderly) is still missing. All hands are on the deck and we are combing the bush around some communities."

Omoni said, “The Command’s Tactical Unit has swung into action; the IGP Unit is also helping the manhunt for the hoodlums. Investigation had been ordered and we will get the perpetrators of this act in no time.

“It is a sad moment for the police and we pray that their gentle souls will rest in peace.”

The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt had raised the alarm over the activities of hoodlums on Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA during Saturday’s legislative rerun election in Rivers State, disclosing that two policemen were killed and beheaded.

The General Officer Command, 6 Division, Maj.-Gen. Kasimu Abdulkarim, had said in a statement, “The most brutal incidence occurred at Ujju Community near Omoku in Onelga where police patrol team was ambushed.

“In the ambush, 10 policemen scampered into the bush. The Mobile Police organized a rescue mission.

“Regrettably, the team discovered that DSP Alkali Mohammed of Mobile Police Unit 48 was beheaded along with his orderly. The patrol vehicle was taken away with weapons, three policemen escaped while five were missing in action.

“This is the same area where soldiers of 34 Brigade were ambushed on 20 November, 2016 where a soldier was killed.

“Also on 21 November 2016, 4 personnel of NSCDC were killed and their weapons carted away. These attacks are reasonable evidence of violations of breach of the law and order which portray the area as a flash point.”

For most Nigerians, a house is never fully built until adorned with beautiful tiles of all sizes and shapes. This aesthetic endeavour, though very expensive, has since led to several deaths and injuries to house occupants.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 250,000 people worldwide above the age of 15 are injured yearly in the bathroom. Obviously the combination of water and the slick, hard surface of the tile make the bathroom a risky place for injuries/deaths from slipping.

A tiles dealer, Mr Celestine Purity, said some amateur tilers usually use glaze tiles for floors which is very wrong owing largely to their super smooth surface. He added that such tiles are expected to be deployed on walls to decrease cases of slipping while still achieving a very beautiful wall pattern. He said any tile that has a substantial amount of surface grip is to be used for ground designs especially places prone to water spillage. He said the best tiles for any tiling work are glazed tiles because of quality and durability.

He said unglazed tiles overtime peel off on the surface and can be very sharp especially if its edges are exposed thereby causing accidents. He, however, advised that all tiles used on the floor must always be kept dry to avoid unnecessary injuries and or death. He decried the rate at which people source for cheap but not so good tiles.

According to him “when people are moving to a rented apartment, they often source for cheap tiles because they believe they cannot be spending money on another person’s house, but the fact is if any harm comes as a result of that, they will bear the consequences alone”.

He went further to list the new price regime of tiles to be, Italy Bluepale of a 30 by 60 size as N18000 per square meter, while 60 by 60 of same brand is N22,000 per square meter. China variant of a 30 by 60 and 40 by 40 per square meter vitrified glazed tile is however put at N2500 and N1700 respectively with a sharp decrease in price compared to its Italian variant.

An expert Buldr Musa Yakubu said a professional should know the kind of tiles to use. Even if a client wants him to use the wrong one, the professional should advise against it.

Yakubu, former FCT chapter chairman of Nigeria Institute of Builders (NIOB), said tiles are designed for different purposes and places and enjoined prospective home owners to always seek professional advice before choosing tiles wether for the living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms.

“Don’t say because you like a tile you would just use it without professional advice. It is not particular to toilets alone even bedrooms and kitchens. You can slip and fall especially when your feet are wet,’’ he said.

He said rough surfaced tiles are most suitable for commercial areas like banking halls, office spaces, complexes and shopping malls

“There are tiles that suit commercial areas and such tiles surface are rough. It can absorb wears and not slippery but because they don’t look beautiful, shining most people don’t prefer it,” he said.

He said ceramic tiles are surface coated so they can be very slippery and cautioned for proper usage as most people prefer it because of its glossy look and cheap prices.

“I know a lady who slipped from a stair case floored with slippery tiles and had to be flown abroad for treatment even at that she limps. So, we should not choose tiles just because they are beautiful or cheap without taking precaution of the dangers they pose,’’ Yakubu advised.

Anambra State police command has arrested a traditional ruler and two others in the state over destruction of a police post built by another community in Anambra East council area.

The traditional ruler of Mkpunando in Anambra East Local Government area of Anambra State, Igwe Alex Edozieuno, had earlier petitioned the state Governor Chief Willie Obiano and the state police commissioner, Samuel Okaula to rescue them in the hands of Aguleri-Otu community, over an alleged threats to lives.

The monarch, in the petition, alleged that about 15 persons invaded his community last week where they demolished a police station being built for the police by the community.

He alleged that the monarch, during his inauguration speech in the presence of loyalists in his community, vowed publicly to deal ruthlessly with him and his community

“His ambition is to bring the two communities under his ruler ship. Less than a week after his recognition and the threat to my life and property of Mkpunando community, he ordered his thugs to demolish the almost completed police station in my community Mkpunando” he said.

When contacted, the state police command through its police public relations officer, Nkeiruka Nwode, confirmed arrest of some persons, one of which out of which, was a monarch.

She said investigations are in top gear, adding reliable information has been gathered on those behind such dastardly act.

In an eerie form of coincident destiny, the electoral stories of Nigeria and Ghana have followed quite identical paths for the last series of transitions.

The Good

Both nations had quite popular presidents who died in office. In Nigeria late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua died in office in 2010 at age 58 years and was replaced by his Vice, Goodluck Jonathan. Umaru Yar’Adua had spent 3 years in office. Late Yar’Adua fought terrorists north and south and the corrupt cabal at the same time, overturning sales of state assets to the vultures by his predecessor and quelling MEND terror on the south and Boko Haram in the north within a few years. A God-fearing unifier, Nigerians across ethnic lines were quite happy with him and his performance across board. Late Yar’Adua was and remains the only Nigerian president to fully declare his assets.

For Ghana, former President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills died in July of 2012 about three and a half years after being elected to office in 2009. He was 68. He was also replaced by his Vice, John Dramani Mahama. Atta Mills was well loved and respected. He is remembered for being God-fearing and his legacy of ethical leadership. Nicknamed “Asomdwee Hen” or “Prince of Peace,” Professor Atta Mills was also sound in economic policies, leading Ghana to unprecedented economic growth with single-digit inflation and a stable exchange rate.

The Bad

Inheritors of the throne, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria and John Dramani Mahama did not lead the best of regimes. Suffering and corruption were the hallmark of both’s administrations. Right from his days as Vice president, scandals were Mahama’s brand. One of the worst being a phone-call placed to his phone by a lady, Phaedra on a live recording set of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” show where she had bragged of her escapades and direct contact with Ghana’s #2 man. Outgoing President Mahama was bogged with numerous corruption allegations also involving his flamboyant, burning-hot rides brother. Gifts given and received by him including vehicles from foreign businessmen and allegedly buying homes for election officials overseas were part of his long list.

Nigeria’s Goodluck Jonathan did not fare much better. His days as President began with a name brand as the most “clueless president in the world.” A title he embraced. But like Mahama, allegations of corruption were established ever before he became President and included his family members. As governor of Bayelsa, the corruption tales begun with his wife investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Committee, EFCC for several cases including the alleged laundering of $13 million. The Jonathan 5 years in office were filled with torrential series and hapless cries of massive corruption to the point of calamity to the nation. Obstinately declaring that “stealing is not corruption,” Goodluck Jonathan embraced his labels again and preached alternate scales that Nigerians should use to rate and appreciate his administration. Torrents of blame and monetary seizures have trailed the Jonathan family since being voted out of office.

Interestingly the people gave both men a chance, electing them into office as president for their go, even after both men had already been tainted. But one chance only it was.

And The Old

In 2015 Nigeria held elections with then president Goodluck Jonathan contesting for a second term as president and third term in the presidency. Former military leader Muhammadu Buhari under the APC party contested against him and won, defeating Goodluck Jonathan soundly with 2.5 million more votes. Buhari was 72 according to his official age when he became president in May of 2015. Buhari won with about 54.5% of the vote with Jonathan at 45%.

With a similar margin of 54% to 44%, Mr. Akufo-Addo, of the New Patriotic Party soundly defeated the incumbent, president John Mahama to become Ghana’s president-elect. A human rights lawyer, astonishingly President-elect Mr. Nana Akufo-Addo is also 72 years old!

Like Nigeria’s Buhari who had contested three times previously and lost, “Try me” Nana was a veteran presidential race runner, he ran unsuccessfully for President of Ghana in the 2008 and 2012 before the people finally decided to give him the shot. Buhari ran unsuccessfully in 2003, 2007 and 2011. Sometimes really wanting something is not enough of a validation and does not translate to the capacity and suitableness for that role.

It would be wise for Ghana to learn from its “big brother” and partner in fate, Nigeria and its ongoing trials. Like Nigeria, the recent discovery of oil in Ghana has not quite helped as the country is battling with continuous inflation and increasing prices of utilities like power, which are no longer half as stable as they used to be. In Nigeria, old Buhari who came into power with a lot of support and goodwill is having a hard time. Nigeria quickly fell into a recession with loses of millions of jobs as the new elder-led Buhari administration slowly and clumsily looked for the steps. Dwindling currency power which has tanked the Naira and Cedis an identical 400% over the past few years discombobulated the new administration. Elders expect savings and a tidy house. Summarizing Nigeria under Papa Buhari, the president appears stuck in an old pattern of doing things and challenged by an advanced technological and complex world, thereby becoming at the complete mercy of whoever he is related to and hopes knows what should be done. Many of whom do not share the pain, vision and desperation of the nation. The president is at the mercy of a list that includes family, the very same corrupt cabal, the same politicians who drained and damaged the nation, the World bank and IMF…just whoever.

Also importantly, the elections in Ghana and Nigeria were both quite polarizing with divisions along religious and ethnic lines. Mr. Akufo-Addo would do well uniting the country and not following Nigeria’s example where divisions appear to have become more plentiful, deeper and deadlier since Buhari’s swearing in.

Challenging times are bringing “change” candidates not just in Nigeria and Ghana but across the world. But sometimes the more things change the more they remain the same and sometimes get worse. Ghanaians must not wait. Victory does not end with the declaration of the winner but begins with it. Ghanaians must track every step their new president takes and make sure he is fast, smart, strong and able to take them to the promised land.

Mrs Ganiat Usman, a witness, on Thursday narrated before an FCT High Court in Kubwa how a suspect, Mrs Remilekun Momoh, used her Unity Bank account to fraudulently divert funds.

Usman was led in evidence by the prosecuting Counsel, I. Deribe.

She said the defendant, who was then her neighbour, coerced her into opening an account with Unity Bank after she was paid two million naira of her late husband’s gratuity.

“She told me that once I opened the account and deposited the two million naira I would get a monthly interest of N39, 000, so I did that.

“In 2014, when my daughter gained school admission, I approached her for N300, 000 and another N300, 000 for my house rent and she gave me.

“But then, she told me that my balance of N1.4 million would only attract a monthly interest of N8, 000.

“That, I collected just twice; once from the ATM and the second time, she gave me by hand.”

The witness said she later told the defendant that she was not interested in the transaction anymore and wanted her money back as a result of which the defendant avoided her for sometime.

However, she said the day the defendant asked her to go to the bank and withdraw the money, she was told there was no money in the account.

“It was the second time she asked me to go that the customer care personnel informed me that I had a balance of N4.5 million.

“So I called her and told her that my balance was showing N4. 5 million instead of N1.4 million and she said that she was aware.

“She said that the money was from a contract she executed.”

The witness further said that the defendant asked her to transfer N680, 000 into a Zenith account of a named Foundation and N300, 000 into the defendant’s son’s account.

She noted that a number of times, the defendant asked her to issue post-dated cheques to her and one time, she collected her ATM card which she used for some days.

The Defendant’s counsel, Mr Lawrence Alabi told the court that he would not be able to cross-examine the witness at that moment.

This, he said was because the prosecuting Counsel tendered an amended copy of the charges to him while the proceeding was going on.

Justice Bello Kawu adjourned further hearing in the case to Jan. 30, 2017.

The defendant, an accountant with a branch of Unity Bank, Abuja, was arraigned by the EFCC and charged with criminally diverting N14. 4 million bank money. (NAN)

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has won Ghana’s presidential election, defeating incumbent President John Mahama in a hotly contested election according to result released by media outlets across the country.

Mr. Akufo-Addo party also triumphed over Mr. Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), in parliamentary elections that also took place throughout Ghana on Wednesday, December 7, 2016.

President Mahama’s bid for reelection was hurt by widespread voter disaffection with an economy that has stalled and a sense that the incumbent president had lost touch with everyday Ghanaians.

Mr. Akufo-Addo rode a populist message into office, promising voters that he would reverse the rot of the past few years of the NDC’s rule. Results of polls showed that the opposition party capitalized on Ghanaians’ desire for change to upstage the incumbent President.

The national electoral body has not officially declared the results, but most Ghanaians have accused the body of complicity as it has stalled in announced results of the election as widely expected by a majority of Ghanaians.

The Nigerian Army said on Wednesday that it had rescued additional 801 persons held hostage by the Boko Haram terrorists in its ongoing anti-terrorism operations.

Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East made the announcement while briefing newsmen in Maiduguri.

He said that the persons were rescued between Nov. 23 and date.

“A total of 801 persons were rescued from the terrorists’ camps from Nov. 23 to date,” he said.

Irabor said that the military had also arrested a number of terrorists fleeing their Sambisa forest hideout due to the ongoing operation.

“Likewise, on Dec. 4 at about 1345hrs, our troops in conjunction with local vigilante intercepted five men, 29 women and children heading towards Goniri from Kafa.

“The men were screened by the local vigilante and two of them were confirmed to be terrorists.

“They have since been taken into custody and are undergoing interrogation,’’ he said, adding that the military also apprehended suspected cattle rustlers during its operations.

“On Nov. 28, four persons and a teenager were arrested by our troops deployed at Bulabulim Ngarnam with 4 cows.

“The arrested persons have been handed over to the Nigeria Police,” he said.

Irabor said that the military also recovered arms from suspected kidnappers in Bauchi state.

“On Dec. 2, our troops while on patrol at the general area of Gamji and Kafin Lemu villages in Ningi LGA of Bauchi state encountered some suspected kidnappers who engaged them in gun battle.

“They were killed in the gun battle that ensued.

“The troops recovered several arms and ammunition which include five Dane guns, a locally made pistol, some cartridges and charms,” he said
