If you're worried about what your lifestyle may be doing to your health, then a new - albeit very morbid gadget - gadget claims to help.

A Swedish inventor has designed a watch that apparently calculates a person's life expectancy - and even counts down to the time they will die.

But far from being morbid, Mr Colting calls it 'The Happiness Watch' and claims it has been designed to help people make the most of their life and cherish the time they have left.

To set up Tikker, the wearer fills out a questionnaire by entering information about their medical history, including allergies or illnesses.

They are also asked whether they drink or smoke and if there are any instances of cancer, diabetes and other diseases in their family.

Wearers are additionally asked about how much exercise they do, as well as how much they weigh before receiving a score.

Their age is deducted from the results to predict a death date and the Tikker - which also works as a regular watch - begins the countdown. 

Now, after a crowdfunding campaign, the gadget is available to buy online £49.99. 

Despite the original target being $25,000, a total of $98,665 was eventually raised.

The Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, has tabled before the National Judicial Council ahead of the council’s meeting scheduled for Thursday, a petition accusing the state’s Governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, and the police of complicity in the attack on judges and court workers in the state last week.

A copy of the September 26, 2014 petition addressed to the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police of which was also attached to a covering letter sent to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, as the Chairman of the NJC, was exclusively obtained by Punch Newspaper from a police source in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.

The covering letter sent to the Chief Judge was learnt to have been dated September 29.

Justice Daramola, in his petition to both the NJC and the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, accused Fayose of leading a large number of thugs, who disrupted court proceedings, beat up judges and court workers and also tore court records.

He also accused the policemen and other law enforcement agents deployed within and outside the court premises of “looking on completely uninterested and unconcerned” while the attacks by the thugs on the court workers and users lasted.

The Chief Judge justified the closure of the courts in the state after the mayhem, an action which he said was to avert “looming danger within the premises of the High Court of Ekiti State” after the police officers “posted to guard and protect the integrity of the court and its personnel have failed us and left us at the mercy of political hoodlums”.

It was also learnt on Tuesday that Fayose had through, his lawyers, sent a separate petition to the NJC, alleging that the Justices of the Governorship Election Tribunal, sitting in Ado-Ekiti High Court headquarters had received bribe.

Fayose alleged that the panel members had been bribed by Governor Kayode Fayemi and the All Progressives Congress to rule against him on September 25, when the court proceedings were disrupted by thugs allegedly loyal to him.

But the Chief Judge, in the petitions both entitled, ‘Ekiti State Judiciary under siege of political thugs,’ chronicled the invasion of the court premises in Ado-Ekiti, by thugs between September 22 and September 24.

The petition read in part, “Now on Thursday, the 25th day of September, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the governor-elect, again led thousands of people and thugs into the premises of the High Court beating and maiming members of staff.

“The thugs invaded my court where I was to deliver a judgment in a land matter, tore the record books, beat court officials and vandalized the furniture in Court No. 1.

“The political thugs descended on Hon. Justice J. A Adeyeye, the presiding judge in Court No. 3 beat and dragged him on the ground. The judge’s suit was also torn into shreds. I could not gain entrance into the premises of the court and had to hurriedly turn back on being alerted that I was the prime target of the hooligans.”

Justice Daramola said the attack on the court on September 25 was preceded by a similar siege on the court premises on September 22, when thugs allegedly loyal to Fayose disrupted court proceedings apparently to avert the delivery of a ruling which they suspected could go against the governor-elect.

The plaintiffs in the suit are challenging Fayose’s eligibility to contest the governorship election.

The CJ said he was at the Supreme Court in Abuja attending the special court session marking the commencement of the new legal year and the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on some lawyers when the violence first broke out on Monday, September 22.

A copy of the petition reads in part, “On Monday 22nd day of September, while I was attending the Supreme Court Special sitting in Abuja, I was called on phone that thugs loyal to Mr. Ayodele Fayose have invaded the headquarters of the judiciary of Ekiti State where Hon. Justice I.O Ogunyemi was deliver a ruling on the matter instituted against him.

“The thugs beat workers black and blue while the presiding judge and lawyers had to run for their lives. They smashed windows and furniture. Meanwhile, the policemen deployed within and without the premises in large number were looking on completely uninterested and unconcerned while these thugs were on prowl beating and maiming workers and court users.

“The thugs went on searching for the judge who ran into hiding. It took your (the Commissioner of Police) personal intervention when you were duly informed on phone to rush to the scene of the mayhem within the court premises to rescue the said judge and took him out into safety.”

According to him, from the events which followed that of September 22, it appears that the whole episode of violence was pre-planned.

His petition further read, “The above in the main was just the beginning of what would appear to be a pre-planned long siege and onslaughts on the court and its personnel.

“The political hoodlums showed again in large numbers on Tuesday, 23rd and Wednesday 24th of September, 2014 on the spurious ground that they came to listen to the ruling which they did not allow the presiding judge in Court No. 6 to deliver on Monday, September 22, 2014. No such ruling was slated for hearing since the thugs invaded the premises of the court on Monday.”

The Chief Judge said all entreaties to the police and law enforcement agencies to intervene in the mayhem yielded no positive response.

He stated, “It is needless to reiterate here that while the mayhem and attack on judges and staff and property of the court was in progress, scores of policemen and SSS (State Security Service) operatives posted to protect lives and property within the court premises looked on and watched without taking any step to save the situation.

“All entreaties to officers and men of Ekiti State Command to protect the court as an important institution of state yielded no positive response.”

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, yesterday for the first time spoke on the controversial $9.3m cash allegedly smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians and an Israeli using his private jet. The money which has been confiscated by a South African court was meant for the purchase of arms for the Nigerian Intelligence Services.

 This is just as the #BringBackOurGirls# campaign group, has said it will soon drag the CAN president and the Federal Government to court over the money.

Following the use of his aircraft to convey the money which was not declared in South Africa until immigration officials discovered it, the CAN president was linked to the arms deal with critics condemning his role in the arms deal.

Explaining his own side of the story yesterday, at an emergency meeting of the expanded National Executive Council, NEC, of CAN in Abuja, Pastor Oritsejafor denied any involvement or knowledge of the deal to buy arms in South Africa, noting that enemies of Christians were fuelling the division of CAN.

He said: “The media has been awash in the past few days about an unfortunate incident involving the movement of funds from Nigeria to South Africa. In the unfortunate news reports, attempts have been made to link me directly with the transaction. So far I have refrained from making any direct public statement pending the time that I would have briefed the leaders of the church and explained my position on the issues to them.

“I believe that the primary institution that I owe any explanation to is the church. Permit me to thank everyone who stood by me these past days by ways of prayers, as well as strongly defending me even though I have not undertaken any public defence of myself.

“I am particularly appreciative of the valuable support of the Catholic Church in refuting a distorted news item by mischievous elements in the media. I wish to assure you that I will not do anything to tarnish the image of Jesus Christ or compromise the divine standard of the Church.

The aircraft is mine — CAN president

“At the risk of being seen to be defending myself, I wish to confirm to the distinguished leaders of the church that the Bombardier Challenger 601 aircraft in question is mine.

“The aircraft was presented to me as a gift by members of our congregation and ministry partners world wide at the 40th anniversary of my call into the ministry. May I be permitted to stress that the aircraft was not given to me by the President of Nigeria, neither was it a settlement for any political favour or patronage.

“With the benefit of hindsight, the President of the country was a guest in our church during the anniversary celebration when the Jet was presented to me and this has been construed to imply that it was a gift from the President of the country.

“The President of Nigeria has nothing to do with the gift of the aircraft. By the way, I still wonder why all those saying this, still cannot come out to show proof so that the matter can be put to rest once and for all. Let me say that this might be an issue of the court in the near future.

“In order to ameliorate the cost of maintenance of the aircraft, I sought and got permit to allow the aircraft fly in and out of Nigeria.

“Based on this, I leased the aircraft on August 2, 2014 to a company to run it. It was the leasee that entered into an agreement with the people who carried out the transfer of funds. Having leased the aircraft to the Green Coast Produce Company Limited, any transaction undertaken with the aircraft can no longer be attached to me.

War against the Church
“In as much as I am shocked and distressed by the incident, I wish to appeal to Christians in Nigeria to remember that a war has been waged against the Nigerian Church. This war is being fought on many fronts and this unfortunate incident is another dimension in the assault against the Church.

“It is clear that those who manipulated this conspiracy desire to create a schism in the Church. The media hype and the deliberate distortion of information that followed it confirmed that forces that desperately desire to cause division and disunity in the Church are at work. Even the devil knows that a house that is divided cannot stand.

“As Christians, we need unity in the Church now more than ever. We are witnessing inhuman attacks by religious extremists against Christians in the northern part of the country while Christian infrastructure is being destroyed in hundreds.

“If we permit the enemy to divide us, our chances of corporate survival shall be severely threatened.
“Distinguished leaders of the Church, please permit me to state clearly before God and before all of you here present today, I am not a party to the movement of $9.3 million from Nigeria to South Africa to purchase arms and ammunition. I am not part of the deal. I know nothing about it.

“Let me make a passionate appeal to our heads of blocks, heads of denominations and Christian leaders at different levels and spheres of influence to please use your good offices to caution and control your subordinates and followers from making public statements that will further polarise the Church and strengthen the arms of the enemies of the church.

“If I offend you or you offend me, instead of talking to media, let us talk to each other within the house of God.”

A nightmarish scene played out in far away South Africa a couple of weeks ago when, on September 5, 2014, a jet owned by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), was caught at Lanseria, South Africa stashed with $9.3 million undeclared cash and invoices from two companies, Tier One and the ESD International Group Ltd (ESD) of Cyprus, for armaments and a helicopter. This questionable misadventure promptly got the official endorsement of the government of President Goodluck Jonathan which announced that the money was purportedly meant for the purchase of arms for the Nigerian forces through the black market!

This incident, and the government's sordid claim, marked the latest stage of the nation's crisis of disrespect of rule of law and cover-ups that have heightened Nigeria's poor reputation beyond its borders. How can the government possibly justify its claim that it was procuring and intending to pour about $9.3 million worth of unmarked weapons and military equipment into a very volatile, unstable and crisis-ridden zone of the country where Boko Haram had confiscated military equipment and used them to kill our soldiers and civilians? And how does the government justify that it hired a private jet belonging to the CAN president or his company, to procure equipment to combat a group they say is an Islamic sect bent on islamising Nigeria?


 Since the tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor's influence and sordid privileges have soared- they were even together on a pilgrimage last year- but no one really expect that the pact of association will extend to glaring act of disrespect for rule of law. Some may consider this not to be a big issue, however it is.

The Nigerian government said it had made available to the South African government indisputable documentary proof that the intended purpose for the stashed cash was legitimate. But information from South Africa seem to contract Nigeria's claims. In fact, the erudite Guardian newspaper columnist Sonala Olumhense succinctly pointed this out in his piece "Cash For Arms, And Other Tales", that "Anyone looking for further proof those documents were manufactured should consider that, according to the National Prosecuting Authority, “The agreement between Tier One and ESD was concluded only on September 8, three days after the money was seized at Lanseria.”


 The import of this information is that those documents must have been rigged out of a printer on board the luxury jet because Tier One is unknown to South Africa’s National Conventional Arms Control Committee and was not authorized to enter into any agreements regarding the sale and/or rental of the kinds of equipment Nigeria claimed to seek. The South African authorities, who may have placed the arms-buyers from Nigeria in separate rooms and grilled them individually, also stated that “their explanations were flawed and riddled with discrepancies" One of those discrepancies and queries has to be this: Why would Nigeria have been seeking to buy from Tier One in South Africa, which was going to buy from ESD in Cyprus; doesn’t Oritsejafor’s jet fly to Cyprus?

To call the incident shocking and a national embarrassment will therefore be an understatement, but that the President's spin doctors immediately sprung into action to verbally launder it is indeed scandalous. Perhaps it will take the full weight of our judicial system to demand that the Nigerian Government uphold the rule of law, along with the general outrage of ordinary Nigerians to goad the National Assembly into reluctantly accepting their responsibilities to put Nigerian interest ahead of narrow and shortsighted partisan politics.


It is time once and for all that our federal politicians take full responsibility for a wholly unacceptable pattern of disrespecting the rule of law, myriad of sleazes and cover ups. If they do not hold an honest and open inquiry on this incident, their silence will reaffirm to the world that we condone this scandal and would irreparably harm the reputation (whatever is left of it) of this potentially great country. Our government simply can not continue to make critical decisions that affect us all with stakes that are too high for us and our future generations to bear.

As numerous media reports have noted, could the flagrant contravention of the South African law and other laws governing the movement of cash and the purchase of arms and ammunition prove that the intended transaction was illegal and is possibly intended to smuggle arms to Nigeria to continue to equip terrorists in the North, pirates and militants in the Niger Delta and other forms of insurgence in Nigeria? After all, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor sits on the board of the company, Eagle Air Nigeria, that leased his luxury jet that discreetly flew into Lanseria, a private airport north of Johannesburg.


That a decision was made by the Federal Government to procure arms through the black market on a jet owned by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor may be shocking, what is indeed worse is the strong message that the Federal Government is sending out that the works, utterances and actions of the CAN president, however incriminating, enjoy the express endorsement and political cover of the presidency, even as the CAN headquarters evolves into a more diffused arena for religious intolerance.

When the founding fathers of CAN met on August 27, 1976 at the Catholic secretariat, Lagos to create the organisation, they envisioned an organisation that would represent a platform for all Christians to promote cooperation among Christians, interfaith harmony and safeguard the welfare of all Nigerians. However on the impetus of a single man, the lofty ideals of the founding leaders have mutated into a mandate to pursue selfish interests, spread fear and engage in wall-to-wall hate mongering, particularly those spread through the use of modern multimedia.

And no one seems to be doing a better job for the CAN than the fire-brand and CAN's poster boy Pastor Bosun Emmanuel, who, in his latest 1-hr long schizophrenic and brain numbing ranting before a packed Redeemed Christian Church of God audience during the period of the last National Conference, spewed out factual confusion mixed with spiritual shortsightedness- all to the admiration and applause of his hapless audience. Inept and ignorant, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel (he claims he had returned from Germany in 2006 where he served the Redeemed Christian Church of God as the National Co-ordinator, to "serve the information needs of the church" because "the church in Nigeria lacks information" set off in his hate speech by first quoting the Wikipedia on a fictitious "Abuja Declaration 1989" drawn up by the Islam in Africa Organisation (IAO) to islamise Nigeria. While Pastor Bosun Emmanuel goes around the country spouting the hate-filled propaganda, his foot-soldiers have proliferated the internet with the hate speech.


A quick check on WIkipedia will reveal that this fictitious declaration was a regurgitated lie from an online anti-islam propaganda archive, and had been deleted by Wikipedia as a junk material. The editing history on WIkipedia of the primary source of Pastor Emmanuel shows that the referenced page, before it was binned by Wikipedia was put up at the time of his talk. The obvious question to ask is this: could this have been a coincidence, or neatly arranged to lend some credence to his brainwashing sessions?

But the pastor's ranting went beyond the sport of usual Muslim-bashing. He directly accused His Eminence Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar IV, the Sultan of Sokoto and spiritual leader of the Nigerian Muslims of actively championing anti Christian agenda on behalf of the Muslim community. Yet in contrast to the CAN president, the Sultan is a highly respected voice not only for tolerance, respect and justice for all Nigerians, but for peace and reconciliation between Nigerian Muslims and Christians specifically. The Sultan's record and public esteem attest to the fallacy and alarmist suggestions of Pastor Bosun Emmanuel claims. More egregiously, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel omitted the inconvenient fact that Cardinal Onaiyekan and the Sultan of Sokoto were even considered for the Nobel Peace prize award.

Typically, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel told his audience that he had only come to give them information, and whatever they did with the information was their business. This is exactly how these hybrid Christians and zealots put on the fire and then they leave it to burn.


Of course the "information" he gave the audience included a strong plea, repeated so often in his speech, that the audience vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 because "he is a man ordained by God" for a specific purpose in Nigeria! During the just concluded National Conference this same mercurial personality, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel, a CAN delegate from the South-West representative of CAN, a member of the Religious Committee and Interfaith Committee at the conference, told a gathering made up of some Christian leaders that Boko Haram group was a premeditated plan by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to destabilise the country, with a follow up of Islamisation of Nigeria.

Yet, the OIC is an organisation that has 57 member countries, 56 of which are also member states of the United Nations. The Islamic Development Bank (IDB), an international financial institution founded by the OIC has been contributing to economic development in its member countries, among which are Cameroon, Cote d’ Ivore, Benin, Mozambique, Uganda, to mention a few. All these countries have substantial Christian populations, albeit peace-loving and tolerant Christians. The deliberate misinformation parroted by Pastor Bosun Emmanuel would have been an entertainingly outrageous gaffe if not for its dangerous effects. The insane claim that an organisation like the OIC is using a terrorist group which by all accounts has killed, directly and indirectly, more Muslims, to Islamise Nigeria makes clear that he is a dangerous loose canon and a religious gunslinger in the employment of CAN.

In Nigeria it is not illegal to daydream or to present controversial opinions or materials which are subjectively offensive. However, it is individuals like pastor Bosun Emmanuel that are most dangerous in any society. They act as hate theologians and infuse in people the notion that hating others is necessary for their salvation. No matter how intelligent a person is, everything he knows if from around him. Through propaganda war, it is possible to fashion an organic robot, and an hitherto intelligent person is made to become averse to the mention of certain words and hate others through the fear. Fear of survival can create many things and it is in this business of creating fears, that some make billions.


What the Nigerian law should prohibit are publications and speeches that are hateful and incite to hate. What these mercurial and bizarre personalities are doing through the legitimacy of a body like CAN is marketing their credo of hate to the unsuspecting public and creating fear of a mythical rapacious Islam bent on forcefully bringing everyone into its fold.

In this interview, Australian negotiator, who has been working closely with the leadership of the Boko Haram sect, pleads with the group to seize the window provided by the death of Shekau to end the destructive cycle of insurgency in parts of Nigeria, free captured Chubok girls and return to normal life.

Excerpts:


A senior member of the European Parliament, Franz Obermayr, alleged that the opposition party in Nigeria could be sponsoring Boko Haram by channeling European Parliament financial aid to Boko Haram in the North East of Nigeria. Do you have any such evidence?

I have never heard any political party mentioned by any Boko Haram leader as funding or being associated with Boko Haram.

The Boko Haram commanders have only mentioned individuals like former Governor Sheriff. I heard Sheriff was APC and now PDP but that is irrelevant to me.

I have never mentioned political parties in my discussions with Boko Haram. The names of individual sponsors were given by Boko Haram leaders, not their political party association.

What sort of sponsorship has been mentioned by Boko Haram that they have received?

Former governor Sheriff was specifically mentioned many times. Specifically for example, Sheriff was mentioned as sponsoring trips of the boys to the Lesser Hajj. There, the boys are “reorientated”.
In effect they are recruited to Boko Haram. When they return to Nigeria the recruits are then taken off for further reorientation by which they mean teaching and for training. Some of the training took place in Mali by Tuareg leaders but now more training is conducted locally.

Could mere funding for Lesser Hajj by the assumed sponsors have manifested in the high level of sophistication that the sect has assumed today?

Funds are provided to purchase weapons. This is sometimes transferred through the Central Bank of Nigeria to a person in Cairo who provides the weapons and also provides military uniforms.

At other times vehicles are purchased in Benin for example and driven into Nigeria where they are sold for cash. They do not mind taking a loss on the sale price as by this method they can obtain cash in Nigeria without a direct link to the sponsor.

This person in Cairo, is he an Egyptian? Why are you not able to disclose his identity to the security agents for necessary action?
No, he is Nigerian. He is a Kanuri who has fought with Boko Haram and now associates with a network of jihadists. I have given all his details to the DG-SSS.

What sort of vehicles do they purchase?
VW Golf was mentioned as a favourite. They can sell these very easily in Nigeria. They do keep some to use for suicide bombing. Some time ago they told me one sponsor pledged six Hilux vehicles for the suicide bombers.

You have heard that a “fake” Shekau was killed last week in Kondunga. Do you believe what the military is claiming that the man killed was Shekau or possibly a “fake” Shekau?

I continue to believe that Shekau was killed on or about June 19, 2013 when we were deeply engaged in peace discussions. I have had so many senior commanders tell me that Shekau is dead. It was several weeks after that a Shekau video appeared on YouTube. When I viewed that video with JAS leaders they immediately said, “That boy.

We have used him before.” They were totally dismissive of any claim that Shekau was still alive. They referred to the person in the video as the “fake Shekau”. Some months later one of the senior commanders told me the name of the fake Shekau was Abdul Mutallif. The commander who named him was the one who wrote the script that the fake Shekau reads from in the videos.

But I have heard they have used more than one fake Shekau. In July this year I was told the fake Shekau is Isa Damasaka. Earlier in June they referred to him as Bashir.

Australian ne-gotiator, Stephen Davis yesterday gave some details of how top Nigerians have been channeling huge sums of money to bankroll the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

The influential Nigerians, whose names were however not revealed, were said to have created a strong network which assisted them to wire a large sum of money via the Central Bank of Nigeria to an agent in Egypt. The agent, he said, purchases the arms and military uniforms for the insurgents.



Apart from the Cairo agent buying arms directly for the sect, vehicles and some materials are sometimes moved to Benin Republic where some are sold to raise cash while some are moved to them for their operations in Nigeria.

These details were given by Dr. Stephen Davis in a recent interview, Davis said: “Funds are provided to purchase weapons. This is sometimes transferred through the Central Bank of Nigeria to a person in Cairo who provides the weapons and also provides military uniforms.

“At other times vehicles are purchased in Benin for example and driven into Nigeria where they are sold for cash. They do not mind taking a loss on the sale price as by this method they can obtain cash in Nigeria without a direct link to the sponsor,” the negotiator explained.

Asked to explain whether the Egyptian Boko Haram agent is a foreigner or a Nigerian, Davis said he is a Nigerian of Kanuri extraction with strong connections with Boko Haram and a network of jihadists.

The Australian pointed out that the man in question was not strange to the Nigerian security agencies as his details were already with the Director of State Security Service.

Davis also revealed that the sect’s favourite brand of vehicles is the Volkswagen Golf, which were easily sold off in Nigeria and others used for suicide missions in Nigeria.

The Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria has said the Federal Government is not doing enough to contain the activities of the extremist Boko Haram sect in the North East zone.
The bishops therefore challenged the administration to step up its strategies in the region to safeguard the lives of the people.
In a communiqué issued after its meeting on Thursday in Warri, Delta State, the Conference lamented the increasing carnage in the region and urged the government to act decisively.
The document, sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday, was signed by its President, Ignatius Kaigama, and Secretary, William Avenya.
The Conference said the situation in the North-East region was creating a heightened sense of unrest and siege for the country.
“As Nigeria bleeds and burns, we Bishops are really alarmed at the scale of human, material destruction, and the disruption of village and community life with increased levels of hatred and potentials for more conflicts in the nation,” the group said.
“While Muslims are sometimes targets of these destructive attacks, Christians, churches and non-Muslims in general are the principal targets for extermination, expropriation and expulsion by the Boko Haram insurgents, the perpetrators of all these destructions.
“We believe that we still have governments at federal and state levels whose primary duty it is to preserve and protect the life of every Nigerian irrespective of tribe, religion, social class or tradition. Our government must do more than it is currently doing to safeguard our lives and defend our nation.
“It must do more than it is currently doing to fight off and disarm these actual destroyers of Nigerians and Nigeria. It must do more than it is currently doing to prevent segments of our nation from drifting into anarchy and mutual self-destruction and bring criminals to justice.”
The Conference urged Nigerians to be alert to the grave danger facing “all of us and our nation from within and without.”
It noted that the issue was not about who becomes president or governor or senator after the 2015 general elections.
“The issue is about the life and security of every one of us who loves his or her life and really cares about our living together in peace as noble Nigerians,” it said.
It added, “We urge therefore that we all support and encourage every positive effort by the current government to protect every Nigerian and defend the integrity and unity of Nigeria. Let us equally take lawful measures locally to prevent the destruction of fellow Nigerians and to ward off Nigeria’s destroyers.

The son of Nigeria’s first Republic Prime Minister, Dr. Abdul-Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, has said he will contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Tafawa-Balewa condemned plot by the national leadership of the party to demoralize other presidential aspirants by adopting President Goodluck Jonathan as the sole presidential candidate of the party.


He was responding to the adoption of Jonathan by the party’s National Executive Committee at its meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

With the adoption, the party said it expected all members of the party including those nursing presidential ambition to drop it and queue behind the President.

But Tafawa-Balewa said he would not be intimidated with such decision.

He said in a statement on Sunday that such endorsement was undemocratic.

He said, “I’m not intimidated by the decision of the PDP governors and the party to support the second term aspiration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“What type of democracy do we have? Is the PDP a communist party? Where is the place of internal democracy?”

He said the greater majority of Nigerians had been yearning for a leadership capable of fulfilling their high expectations and aspirations.

“What Nigerians need and where they want the country to be in future are paramount issues. We need to put our ideas before the people and allow them to decide,” he added.

Nigerian troops might have scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North East on September. During a desperate attempt to capture Konduga in their delusion to eventually marching on and capturing Maiduguri, the man who had been mimicking Late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos might have been finally killed.

According to senior military and intelligence sources, "it is getting more certain that the terrorists' commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014."

The Federal Government is said to be charging N200,000 to train school teachers on the Ebola Virus Disease.

The government has also postponed a workshop on EVD earlier designed to train teachers of Federal Government-owned secondary schools before the September 22, 2014 schools resumption date.

Investigations by our correspondent revealed that the director in charge of Basic and Secondary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, was said to have instructed all principals of secondary schools to send N200,000 to the Federal Government’s Ebola Response Team as charges for the training of two teachers from each of the schools.

The dates for the training on Ebola is between September 18 and September 20, 2014, two days to the Federal Government’s approved school resumption date of September 22, 2014, and the venues are the Federal Government College, Benin for schools in the South and the Federal Government College, Minna for schools in the North.

Apart from the training fee of N200,000, the schools were also expected to provide two hand-held thermometers, two protective kits, two medical reflective jackets, two facemasks and kits, one drum of wall liquid soap/soap solution dispenser, 10 litres of izal, and 10 litres of Dettol. Other items expected to be provided by the principals of the unity schools include 10 litres of methylated spirit, 10 litres of hands sanitisers, a drum of bleach solution and 300 packs of disposable hand gloves.

The principals were directed to liaise with the various states Ministries of Health to ensure the purchase of the listed items considered vital to the reopening of the schools in view of the spreading fear over the EVD.

However, there are fears that the principals might not be able to provide the N200,000 training fee demanded by the Federal Ministry of Education as some of them claimed they had not got budgetary releases since July, 2014.

lSouth African police are investigating two Nigerians and an Israeli citizen who tried to bring $9.3m in cash into the country illegally, a spokesman said on Monday.

There were suspicions that the money could be meant for arms. The Nigerians, coming from Abuja, were not identified, according to a report by Reuters.



The plane, a Bombardier Challenger 600, had a Nigerian flight crew on board. It was piloted by Captain Tunde Ojongbede, according to City Press.

Adrian Lackay, spokesperson for the SA Revenue Service, confirmed that customs officers became suspicious when the passengers’ luggage was unloaded and put through the scanners just after 7pm. The officers then investigated and found three suitcases full of cash.

The passengers apparently told officials they were acting on behalf of the Nigerian intelligence service.

They provided documentation confirming they had come to South Africa to buy weapons. It is not clear whether the Israeli passenger was an intelligence operative or an arms dealer.

The National Conventional Arms Control Committee, which has to approve the import and export of any weapons as well as issue permits for such transactions, was not aware of any applications in this case.

The South African Revenue Service seized the funds at Lanseria airport, northwest of Johannesburg, on Sept. 5, 2014. The funds are being held at the central bank as police investigate, SARS spokeswoman Marika Muller said.

“The passengers’ luggage was searched after Customs officials detected irregularities. The money was detained as it was undisclosed/undeclared and above the prescribed legal limit,” Muller said in a statement

The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, on Monday said the 2014 West African Examination Council results of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls were ready.

The over 200 girls were abducted in April when members of the Boko Haram sect invaded Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State.

Their whereabouts remain unknown more than 150 days after the sad incident.

The students were writing their examinations when the sect members interrupted the exercise.

Shekarau, who appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Education in Abuja, informed the lawmakers that the Ministry of Education was reviewing the results.

He stated that a review was necessary because the examinations became “haphazard” as a result of the abduction.

He was responding to a question by a member of the committee, who sought to know the fate of the girls.

The minister, who assured the committee that the‎ Federal Government had not lost hope in its bid to secure the release of the girls, added that efforts were also being made to improve on girls’ education generally in the North-East zone.

Shekarau added, “By 1pm today (Monday), the President (Goodluck Jonathan) has scheduled a meeting in which I am attending, specifically to address some of the issues of girl education in that troubled zone.

“In fact, this morning, I got a communication from the West African Examinations Council; the result of the Chibok Secondary School is out. We (ministry) have to look at it (result) via-a-viz the security situation and implication before the formal release.

“It is right now in my possession. Because when the abduction took place, some remained, completed their examinations, some were taking examinations and they were abducted.

“So, the result is haphazard. So we are addressing that this afternoon.

“This is just for the information of the Honourable members.

“It is also a matter of great concern to us. I am sure by 1pm, four, five of us will be sitting with Mr. President to address this issue.

The people of Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State have been thrown into mourning following the murder of Mr. Sabinus Odu, an uncle to the state governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

Odu, the Vice-Principal of Community Secondary School, Aluu, was killed earlier in the week by some suspected assassins.

The deceased, whose pastime was hunting, had gone to the bush to check on a trap before he was killed.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, told journalists on Friday that though the government would not want to be presumptuous on the matter, the killing might have been politically motivated.

Semenitari said though the late Odu was not a card-carrying member of any political party, he had sympathy for the state governor.

Pointing out that Odu and Amaechi were from the same grandparents, Semenitari described the deceased as a humble man.

She said, “On Monday, the governor’s uncle came back from school in the evening. He later went to the farm to check his trap. But when they could not see him after several hours, a search party was conducted.

“The search party later saw his motorbike by the side of the bush before his body was later found with several machete cuts.

“The matter was immediately reported to the Elele Police Station. Mr. Sabinus Odu was a humble citizen. He was not a contractor. His only crime is that he is related to the governor.”

She, however, called on the police to ensure that no stone was left unturned in apprehending the suspects.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said the state police command had received a report on the incident.

Mohammad, however, said that investigation had begun on the matter with a view to apprehending those behind it.

Americans rally in NYC for 9/11 truth
On the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, hundreds of Americans rallied near the site of the former Twin Towers demanding the whole truth behind the tragedy.


Washington says the attacks were a series of coordinated strikes in which four passenger airliners were hijacked and rammed into their targets.


However, the official story of the incident continues to be disputed by many scholars and researchers to this date.


Around the corner from the official commemoration ceremony in New York City on Thursday, there was a crowd of several hundred people who called for the whole story, Press TV's Caleb Maupin reports from New York.


“I think it was orchestrated, no doubt. I don’t believe the official story one bit. You know the way the towers fell, how they fell straight down the path of most resistance, free-fall speed,” Joe Spoto, a Marine Corp veteran, told Press TV.


“If you are sending our military to fight for oil or the puppy fields of Afghanistan you know then it’s not good to go,” he added.


Others said corporations representing the US military industrial complex were benefiting from 9/11 and the ensuing wars in the Middle East.


“Major corporations in the arms industry, in the oil industry, the media, the insurance industry, banking industry, have benefited enormously from 9/11,” said Richard Gage, a scholar and member of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth.


“We encourage everybody to look and see who runs those corporations, who runs those industries, what are their ties to government,” Gage continued.


The activist group says evidence regarding the destruction of the World Trade Center towers shows pre-set explosives were used in the demolition of the buildings.


The protesters also demanded the release of 28 pages from the 9/11 Commission Report which still remain classified.


The administration of former president George W. Bush blamed al-Qaeda for the attacks and declared the so-called “war on terrorism.” As part of that strategy, the US attacked Afghanistan and later invaded Iraq.

The National Examinations Council on Wednesday released the June/July 2014 results with remarkable improvement of candidates performance in key subjects.



The candidates recorded 72.58 per cent credit pass in English Language and 69.49 per cent credit pass in Mathematics.

The Registrar and the Chief Executive Officer of the body, Prof. Nwackukwu Okpala, while announcing the results in Minna, noted that the results showed marked improvement on the previous exams conducted between 2012 and 2013.

He pointed out that 989, 622 registered for the examinations, out of whom, 978,886 actually sat for the papers.

An analysis of other core subjects indicated that 783,975 sat for Biology with 531,784 pass at credit level, representing 67.83 per cent; Chemistry had 418,785 candidates with 305,120 pass at credit level, representing 72.86 per cent; 418,440 sat for Physics with 290,310 pass at credit level, representing 69.38 per cent.

Also, 19,067 sat for Further Mathematics while12,827 passed at credit level, representing 67.27 per cent; Agricultural Science had 500,897 candidates with 347,834 pass at credit level, representing 69.44 per cent .

Okpala stated that an analysis of the examination showed that only 0.44 per cent of those who sat for the examination were involved in malpractice.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega on Wednesday explained why the commission has allocated more polling units to the geo-political zones in the North, than those in the South, saying the plan is based on the existing number of registered voters in the country, which he put at 70,383,427. 

Ahead of the 2015 election, the electoral body has proposed to allocate more than 21,000 new polling units to the north, while the south will receive about 8,000.

 The plan is not yet finalized. But the ratio has angered the three geopolitical zones in the south, with some calling for Mr. Jega’s resignation, accusing him of bias. At a press conference Wednesday, Mr. Jega vowed not to resign, and said those asking him to quit lack adequate information on the exercise and are being mischievous. The Commission had last month announced its plan to create additional PUs before the general elections next year to bring the number of units in the country to 150,000 from the original 119,973.

According to the proposal, the three geo-political zones in the North will have about 21, 000, which is 70% of the new units, while the three zones in the south got about 8,000 units. The state-by-state analysis shows that while Lagos will have the highest number of the PUs with 3,159 PUs, while Imo State will have the least with 42. However, fierce criticisms have trailed the exercise with some groups alleging that it was aimed at foisting the dominance of one section of the country over the others for political advantage.

 The South-South Peoples Assembly, SSPA, went a step further by demanding the resignation of the INEC Chairman and should not be allowed to conduct the 2015 general elections. Mr. Jega, an indigene of Kebbi State in the North West zone, said the Commission’s plan is “sincere and well-intentioned,” and not designed to confer any political advantage on any individual, political party or region.

He said though the outcry was understandable, but regrettable given the low level of public trust in governance institutions in Nigeria, the decision of the Commission to re-configure the structure of the PUs and create additional ones was “driven by our collective aspirations as Nigerians to reform and improve upon the electoral process for free, fair, peaceful and credible elections in 2015 and beyond”.


Stating that there was no sectional or parochial agenda in this decision, the INEC chairman stressed that it was aimed at easing the access of voters to the ballot box by decongesting over crowded PUs and dispersing voters as evenly as possible among all the PUs. The “need factor” more than political sentiments, informed the patterns of distribution of the PUs being proposed,” Mr Jega added. “Still, the Commission has not been unmindful of the political nature of the exercise; and that is why it took the decision that (1) no state will lose any PUs from its stock of existing units, no matter the statistical outlook when voter population is exaggerated into units of 500 persons; and (ii) every state will get some additional polling units from 15% of the total being newly created on the basis of ‘equality principle’ regardless of the number of PUs already existing in each state in comparison to the voter population,” he said.


“We have already made the computed figures in this regard public. Contrary to the argument by critics, the Commission is not working on imaginary population sizes based on perceived patterns of migration by potential voters, rather, it is working with the documented register of voters as we have it at the moment.”


 He expressed worry that critics seemed to focus on the allocation of the proposed units and urged them to compare the total allocations state by state. Explaining further the methodology used in arriving at the new arrangement, Mr. Jega said since PUs are created to service registered voters, “the fairest and most logical criterion to use in distributing the 150,000 PUs nationwide is the number of registered voters.” He stressed, “At present the post-AFIS (i.e. after removing duplicate registrants) figure of registered voters is the most appropriate figure of registered voters that is available nationwide, to use; hence the decision to use post-AFIS figures, as the basis for distributing the 150,000 polling units.


 “The simplest way to distribute the 150,000 polling units is to divide the number of registered voters in each state by 500 (maximum of registered per polling unit.) He explained that the present structure of PUs was created in 1996 by the defunct National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, NECOM, which created 120,000 PUs and 8,809 wards (registration areas). According to him, the structure of the polling units had been used for the 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011 general elections and that there had been exponential growth in Nigeria’s populations as well as severe demographic shifts resulting from new settlements in major urban areas since 1996.

Mr. Jega further explained that the rise in population with corresponding increase in the number of eligible voters was clearly manifested during the 2011 fresh voter registration exercise. According to him, in order to ameliorate the challenges of managing polling units with large number of voters, INEC introduced the concept of “Voting Points’ where polling units with large numbers of voters were subdivided into multiple of manageable numbers of about 300, with a maximum of 450 registered voters. “About 150,000 polling units are required to ensure right-sizing of our polling units based on the number of registered voters,” he said. No reversal The INEC chairman said the Commission had no plan to reverse the decision, stressing “We have taken a decision; we have not yet implemented that decision. People, because they don’t have enough information misunderstood it, some perhaps mischievously. But we are hoping that the information we are providing will make people understand.

“I cannot sit down here and tell you whether we will reverse or we will not reverse. What is clear is that many people are taking hard position on the issue when they are ill-informed and they are very passionate and emotive about it.” On how the Commission would manage the creation of polling units in the areas of the country ravaged by insurgency, he said though the development was “unfortunate and regrettable” the situation would soon be addressed and that those displaced would return. Joan Rivers was "utterly irreplaceable", said Prince Charles, not noticing that most of her had been replaced by plastic.

JOAN RIVERS died in an endoscopy clinic
Where she was having her vocal chords examined.

Her voice had been getting raspier and raspier,
And recently she'd berated an interviewer
On leaving LAX, Los Angeles airport,
Who'd had the impudence to solicit her opinion
On the then current massacres in Gaza.

She turned on him angrily screaming
That she had "zero sympathy
For the civilians killed in Gaza"
Because "they had fair warning to get out, and they didn't ...
"So they deserve to die. They were told to get out.
"They didn't get out. You don't get out? you are an idiot.
"Hamas," she continued, "was re-elected
By a lot of stupid people who don't even own a pencil.
"At least the ones that were killed," she added with a savage relish,
"Were the ones with very low I.Q.s."

She then praised World War Two being ended by Hiroshima and Nagasaki
And she continued hoarsely shouting
At the interviewer who'd had the gall to ask her,
In view of her uncritical support for the Israeli State,
What were her feelings about the deaths of 1400 people:
"They started it. We now don't count who's dead.
"You're dead, you deserve to be dead."

In her snarling triumphalism
She was suggesting
That three hundred and seventy three children,
Killed by Israel's 'Protective Edge',
Had brought their own deaths
Upon themselves.
"You're dead, you deserve to be dead."

However karma is also a bitch,
And shortly afterwards Rivers
Would lose her voice
And, worse still, upon her entering the endoscopy clinic
And being given an anaesthetic
She fell into a coma and died.

The friend of Nancy Reagan, the friend of Netanyahu,
And the friend and favoured wedding guest of Prince Charles,
She would dance attendance upon the rich and powerful
And make it clear that she held political opinions
That matched theirs. She'd play court jester
And then growl, "We must bomb the shit out of Iran".

Her friend, the Prince, said that he was 'deeply saddened'
By the comedian's death 
And, keen to identify himself with outpourings of showbiz grief,
He added that, "Joan Rivers was an extraordinary woman
"With an original and indefatigable spirit,
"An unstoppable sense of humour and an enormous zest for life.
"She will be hugely missed and utterly irreplaceable."

In his dull insouciance the hapless Prince
Had overlooked the fact that his heroine,
Fawned upon in Hollywood as the 'Duchess of Dirt',
'Queen Wise-Arse', and the 'Goddess of Snark',
Had advised his future daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton,
'If you ever want to go to Paris, fly, don't take the tunnel.'

But perhaps he hadn't really forgotten it –
Perhaps he'd perversely savoured Rivers' sick reference
To his ex-wife's untimely death…
And nor did Charles seem aware that,
Far from her being "irreplaceable",
Much of Joan Rivers had been replaced by plastic.

Thanks to nearly three hundred operations
She'd become a smooth skinned gargoyle
Coated by a lustrous chemical sheen;
A reflective veneer on her tautened pink skin.

In 2010 she tweeted, "With all the plastic surgery I've had,
I'm worried when I die God won't recognize me."

The historian Alan Hart responded,
"If she was still alive today, I would say to her something like,
'If he does recognize you, perhaps you should worry
About whether he will forgive you for saying
That, because they voted for Hamas,
The Palestinians of the Gaza Strip prison camp
Deserved what they were getting
When Israel was delivering them
More death and destruction."

Others disobligingly wondered whether
Those disposing of her body would cremate her
Or would recycle her plastic corpse.

"I've had so much plastic surgery," she'd declare,
"When I die they will donate my body to Tupperware."
Although sadly, Tupperware might not think it served their brand –
Devoted to keeping food fresh in a hygienic fashion.

Most tragically of all, despite her surgery she was wistfully to confess,
"No man has ever, ever told me I'm beautiful."

Maybe that was because there was an inner ugliness
That couldn't be concealed by cosmetics:
The inner ugliness of a woman who'd often complain
How much she was inconvenienced by children on 'planes
By saying "where is Casey Anthony when you need her?"
Casey Anthony being an infamous mother
Accused of killing her two-year-old daughter
By suffocating her with parcel tape;
Ugliest of all perhaps, Rivers took a hideous pride
In doing anything for money:
"For $500, I'll write for Hitler," she said.

There is now a new face in hell,

The Nigerian Medical Association on Monday faulted the Federal Government’s directive to schools to resume on September 22 as against October 12.


It said through its National Secretary-General, Dr. Olawunmi Alayaki, that all schools ought to remain shut till all those under surveillance for the Ebola Virus Disease in the country had been certified free.

“We are not happy with this decision on the resumption of schools. Schools should be shut till the last suspected case or patient is certified free of the virus,” the NMA said.

Before the association made this known the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, had disclosed that an 18 month-old baby had been quarantined in the state for showing symptoms of the deadly virus.

The NMA suggested that the resumption of schools could be shifted till December or early part of next year because if Ebola should spread to any school, it would “assume another dimension.”

It said, “ We can shift the resumption date till next year or in the next three months if that is the time it will take. Government should have enough time to follow the standard procedure for containing the virus.

“Parents have no reason to be in a hurry because if Ebola should enter any school, it will assume another dimension. Children cannot survive isolation like adults.

“Nigeria is peculiar because of her large population and we should be pragmatic and proactive. It will not augur well for the country if we have another outbreak due to carelessness.”

Also, the Lagos State chapter of NMA said that the Federal Government should have postponed the resumption date till the completion of surveillance and monitoring of contacts in the affected states.

It said through its chairman, Dr. Tope Ojo, that many of the public and private schools in the country lacked basic hygiene and sanitary facilities that could help prevent the spread of the EVD by pupils.

It stated, “It would not have cost the Federal Government anything to have waited till those under surveillance have completed the 21 days in all the states where they are being monitored.

“The government knows that it takes a longer time for children to get used to the idea of hygiene and sanitation. They are even more vulnerable because they would play with each other whether they are sick or not.

“How many children know that they should use hand sanitisers or avoid contact with anybody that has fever?

“Waiting till October when at least the situations in Rivers and Lagos states would have been conclusively managed is another safety measure the government should have taken . These kids are not studying to get a degree, so we are sure it would not have affected schools’ curricula.”

Also the immediate president of the NMA, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, expressed concern about the September 22 resumption date, wondered about the safety parameters government used in fixing the date.

Enabulele said that the grouse of many parents with the resumption date stemmed from the fact that they were not convinced that schools had met the safety standards for the prevention of Ebola.

He added that if the government was bent on schools adhering to the date, it should begin now to check the sanitary facilities put in place by their proprietors to ensure the safety of pupils.

Enabulele said, “We must know the parameters that the Federal Government used to arrive at the resumption date in the first place. Has the Federal Government carried out a safety assessment in registered schools in the country? There should be a checklist and only those who meet it should be certified fit to reopen.

“The minimum standard is that all schools should have a dispensary, a sick bay where sick children, especially those with fever, are properly managed and tested.”

Saying that he knew that such facilities were not available in many schools, he asked: So, why the rush for their resumption?”

Also, a consultant paediatrician with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi- Araba, Prof. Edamisan Temiye, called on the three tiers of government to ensure that schools had access to water on their premises.

The former Lagos NMA chairman, also warned parents not to force sick children to go to school as this could expose them to infections.

Temiye said, “Governments must ensure that clean water flows on schools’ premises so that children can wash their hands regularly. Water is important for sanitation and it is the duty of government to ensure that citizens have access to it.

“Also, parents should take sick children to hospital. Don’t give them drugs and force them to go to school. Ebola can only be caught from a sick person. School authorities should watch out for and isolate sick children from others.

“Again school owners should give hand sanitisers to their pupils before allowing them into their premises. They should also have thermal thermometers to check the temperatures of their pupils before allowing them into their school premises.”

The Minister of Health had before the doctors spoke with one of our correspondents in Lagos, said that there was nothing to fear over the directive to schools to resume on September 22.

Chukwu, who gave an update of EVD in Nigeria, said, “We have contained the situation. Ebola is no longer in the streets anywhere in Nigeria.

“We are working with the Federal Ministry of Education and we made it clear that in institutions having students returning from outside Nigeria, they should let us know.

“We will work with them and we have questionnaires which we are already using on airlines and ships coming into Nigeria as well as other means of transport. They will fill questionnaires. We will ask questions and conduct tests to see that they don’t have fever.”

The minister also revealed that a fiancé of one of Patrick Sawyer’s contacts who was confirmed positive for EVD had since recovered.

He added, “So far, all the cases that have been confirmed in Nigeria are traceable to the index case (Sawyer). As of this (Monday) morning, the total number of confirmed cases of EVD in Nigeria is 19. Fifteen were in Lagos and four in Port Harcourt.

“The 19th case is the fiancé of one of the primary contacts of Mr. Sawyer who died of the disease. The test results were equivocal but further tests established the disease. He had only mild symptoms and he has since recovered from the illness. He was quarantined but because of the equivocal test result he was not placed on active treatment.

“The total number of deaths from EVD in Nigeria stands at seven . Five of them died in Lagos, one in a private hospital, the index case, and the other four in the isolation ward in Lagos State.

“Two of the seven died in Port Harcourt, the medical doctor who died in a private hospital and the contact, a patient in the hospital at the time the doctor was also on admission, who died in the isolation ward in Rivers State.”

According to him, the total number of patients who have been successfully managed and discharged stands at nine.

He added that the latest was the sister (Chinyere) of the late Port Harcourt doctor who was discharged from the isolation ward in Rivers State on Sunday.

“It should be noted that the nine patients successfully managed and discharged are among the total number of 11 survivors of EVD in Nigeria. At the moment, only one person, the wife of the late Port Harcourt doctor, is on treatment at the isolation ward in Lagos.

“She no longer has any symptoms and is undergoing a series of tests preparatory to her discharge from the isolation ward this week.

“Regarding contacts currently under surveillance, Lagos has 27 contacts surveillance as of now. A total of 339 contacts who were previously on surveillance have been discharged having completed the 21 days of observation. Port Harcourt has 477 contacts under surveillance. It is a mixed group consisting of tertiary and quaternary contacts of Sawyer. Five contacts have already been discharged from surveillance in Port Harcourt having completed the 21 days of observation.”

In Port Harcourt, the Health commissioner, Parker, also confirmed that Chinyere had been discharged. But as journalists expressed joy over Chinyere’s recovery, he announced that an 18 month-old baby, who showed symptoms of Ebola had been quarantined for observation.

The commissioner however did not provide further information as he returned to Chinyere’s recovery and discharge.

“I am cheerful today because we have successfully treated an Ebola patient. She (Chinyere) has been effectively treated, cleared and discharged from our isolation treatment centre. She deserves to be celebrated as a success story,” he said.

Parker, who explained that the state government had reached about 479 contacts, said, “I can assure you that the disease has been covered. People should not cause panic. The number of deaths from Ebola is lower than deaths from road accidents.”
